After opening our doors in September 2013 we will have welcomed over 40,000 people to events in our opening season.

Whether it be to see dance, Shakespeare, music gigs or our monthly comedy nights, to take part in workshops, celebrate the jazz scene in the town or enjoy homegrown productions the people of Doncaster and further afield have supported us throughout the opening months and it has been phenomenal. As we move into our second season we’re still very much in celebration mode and look forward to an exciting few months filled with work from leading national and international companies alongside work made in Doncaster.

On these pages are some memories of our journey so far… #aCastOf1000s

Artists and audiences alike fell in love with the place:

Doncaster folk duo Rita Payne – Rhiannon Scutt and Pete Sowerby – composed a new anthem for the opening of Cast.

It ’s Our Time Chorus...

’s make it last, It ’s our time let die is Cast, It ’s our time the make it last, ’s t le e m ti r u o It ’s e die is Cast. th w o n k u yo e m It ’s our ti

And our first production of Richard Cameron’s The Glee Club – about the lives of six Doncaster miners – was a huge success:

‘The Glee Club, The Glee Club! So good I've seen it twice!’ Lorretta Keeton

‘Wonderful! Amazing! We just kept laughing!' DigYorkshire

‘What a fantastic show’ Martin Laycock

‘Altogether awesome’ Douglas Wallace

‘This is a more than good start’ Kevin Berry, The Stage

And it can all be summed up in the words of our Director, Kully Thiarai:

Doncaster matters – the people of this place matter. Cast is a people’s theatre for the twenty-first century and can only succeed if everyone plays their part. Cast is a place you can call home, a cultural living room where you can inspire and be inspired and that celebrates and nurtures the creative ambitions of all those who join us. We are a Cast of thousands.

A Cast Pantomime

Thursday 5 – Tuesday 31 December

Thu 5 Dec Fri 6 Dec

Directed by Kully Thiarai Written by Joel Horwood and Morgan Lloyd Malcolm with additional material from Fine Time Fontayne Design by Ali Allen Musical Direction by Matthew Bugg

Cinderella is stuck at home looking after her horrid step mum Fiendella, and ugly sisters Salmonella and Rubella, whilst they sit around stuffing their faces and making fart jokes. With only the over-enthusiastic but ineffectual Buttons for company, it doesn’t look like she’ll be going to the pick-a-princess-ball any time soon. But after a chance encounter in a forest, and a wave of dust from fairy god mum, Mother Cusworth, things are looking up.

In our first ever pantomime, live music, beautiful costumes, mayhem and song combine to create a Christmas treat with more magic and sparkle than ever before. Tuesday 18 February

Friday 21 February

Flexer & Sandiland

Featuring Live Music from The Demon Barbers

Weightless is the brand new work from Flexer & Sandiland. This twentieth anniversary show carries Flexer’s recognisable stamp of witty text and humour combined with fast-paced, space-hungry movement.

A clash of dance cultures set in an old English pub with live music by BBC Radio 2 award-winning folk powerhouse The Demon Barbers. Sword dances are performed with snooker-cues, pub bouncers dance the Morris and B-boys flirt with clog girls. Meanwhile house band The Demon Barbers takes English Folk music on a new journey through Hip Hop, House, Funk, Ska, Burlesque and Drum and Bass.

An exciting digital element is provided by Nic Sandiland, plus the musical score by composer Dougie Evans and Israeli cellist/singer Karni Postel. As the cast of international performers attempt to ‘get on with the show’, their meaningful glances, mutual teasing and asides to the audience leaves their choreographer desperately trying to keep things under control from the wings. Main Space 7.30pm £14 / £12 concessions *

Fast-paced and innovative, the show brings together some of the UK’s top clog, sword and Morris dancers with their counterparts from the worlds of B-boying, popping and krump. Main Space 7.30pm £16 / £14 concessions / £13 dance groups *

COMEDY PERFORMANCE

Feel About Your Body New Art Club

Wednesday 19 March An uplifting, life-affirming and hilarious spectacle about how we ‘feel’ about our bodies. Of course, the show title has a double meaning – it’s sexy AND intellectual. Expect silliness, see a man talk to his bottom and find out what not to do during a heart attack. Warning: This show has already left some people feeling ‘a little bit dirty’, contains some brief nudity (long enough to see ‘the works’), contains some brief dancing (silly and emotional), contains some puerile songs (there’s a good one about a shed).

By Cat Jones Directed by Esther Richardson

Wednesday 29 January As an insight into the breathtaking talent of the town’s living dramatists we present this fantastic, funny and edgy new play.

Wednesday 5 February The multi-award-winning The Paper Birds present their critically acclaimed show. Based on our nation’s love affair with alcohol, Thirsty weaves together real stories, memories and booze-based confessions, collected from a ‘drunken hotline’. Fusing live music, verbatim text and stunning physical theatre, The Paper Birds explore the stories and repercussions of lost memories and gained traumas, bruised knees, uncontrollable laughter, urine stained beds and sore heads, particularly focusing on the women waving the flag for ‘Booze-Britain’. A dynamic theatrical exploration going beyond statistics, facts and figures Thirsty looks to the faces and the voices of everyone who likes a drink and asks why, as a nation, are we so thirsty? She’s drawn into the world of the amateur girls; the so-called stars of homemade adult films. Wednesday 9 April The Anatomy of Melancholy has been described as ‘the greatest book ever written’. Nearly 400 years old, it is a vast (1500 page) attempt to identify the causes, symptoms and cures for all kinds of melancholy. Written by vicar and librarian Robert Burton it contains all the wisdom of its age – arcane, outlandish and hilarious. Yet, amidst all the wild stories and suppositions, much of its advice remains as urgent and profound now as it did then. The time has come for Stan’s Cafe to bring the world’s most extraordinary self-help manual to the stage. Second Space 7.45pm £12 / £10 concessions *
