WHAT’S THE STORY? Starting point, briefing and inspiration for Purple South design is a suitcase filled with “Kiwiana” - objects, music and texts unique to New Zealand. The suitcase is sent to some of the finest designers on the planet. All international designers have been invited to visit “Aotearoa”. They came not only to get a feel for the country but also to stage workshops with upcoming designers and students. Werner Aisslinger (Germany) designed the first collection for Purple South in 2002. His interlocking furniture is inspired by the Punakaiki Rocks located at New Zealand’s untamed West Coast and the traditional construction of Maori canoes. David Trubridge (New Zealand) has spent many years sailing the South Pacific Ocean picking up ideas for a series of award winning rocking recliners on his way. His contribution to the Purple South range “Glide” is one of his most acclaimed pieces and featured on the title page of the Eco Design Source Book by Alastair Fuad - Luke published in 2006. Ed Annink (Netherlands) has designed a range of beautiful Tableware that received exceptional feedback from the international media and is sold through the shops of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The latest international cooperation was realised with Paris based designer Matt Sindall (UK) and resulted in Sindall’s quirky side table DOGGY released in November 2006.

STRATA BENCH
purple south
‘STRATA STOOLS & BENCHES’ DETAILS Strata is the family of seats in the collection. The Punakaiki Rocks at New Zealand’s Westcoast showing layer upon layer of water and time sculpted limestone inspired Aisslinger for the characteristic carvings. They break the light beautifully while providing excellent comfort and ventilation. Available Materials: Customwood clear lacquered, natural (see page 4, left) Customwood paint lacquered in a range of colours*, satin finish (see page 4, right) Birch plywood with high density laminate in a variety of colours (see page 5) *( can be painted to customer’s specification)

PS TABLE
purple south
‘PS TABLE’ DETAILS This genius construction results in a stable and great looking table with interesting details. The five interlocking elements take up little space for transport or storage. The smallest version of the PS Table with its unusual dimensions fills a niche for a versatile small table with great depth. Six people can still comfortably meet or dine around the table. It also makes a perfect office table by providing plenty of space for the computer screen and other accessories. The assembly takes only a few minutes and is fun and simple.

SHELF
purple south
‘PS SHELF’ DETAILS Werner Aisslinger’s Shelf offers plenty of space and can bear a lot of weight while appearing light and transparent. This elegant storage solution works just as well at home as in a working environment*. The construction is very stable and designed to look great from all angles so it can be used as room divider as well. Solving the classical design problems of minimizing the material and flat packing the piece for transport, resulted in the refined joints that add beautiful details to this versatile and timeless design.
Available Materials: Birch plywood with high density laminate in a variety of colours. *(The full size shelf stores 125 standard office folders)

PS KING SIZE BED
purple south
‘PS KING SIZE BED’ DETAILS Werner Aisslinger reduces the material to the minimum in this design. Disassembled it is very small and easy to store or transport. It takes only a few minutes of fun assembly to turn it into a generously sized, stable, very unique looking king size bed with slats.
Available Materials: Birch Plywood with high density Formica laminate in a variety of colours*. *( Pictured here is a prototype - please look at the images of the ‘PS Shelf’, ‘Strata’ and ‘PS Table’ to see the Birch Plywood now used for the bed).

TABLEWARE DESIGNED BY ED ANNINK
purple south
TABELWARE DESIGNED BY ED ANNINK 70 CM FRUIT This genius design features four different profiles enabling four different ways of food presentation in an unusual and beautiful way. LONG RUN A great way of serving Sushi, cheeses and the like. The long but narrow dimensions take a lot of food without filling up much space on the table. HIT No matter if you play beach ball with your neighbour or chop garlic, HIT is a hit! The profile is designed to enable the cook to lift the board up with one hand - even if wet - and also gives the illusion of the piece floating slightly above the surface. 70 CM Fruit
