A uniquely New Zealand design collaborative inspired by the rituals and experience of eating by the sea
Welcome to SeaT!
With the initiative of David Trubridge this unique project is a collaboration of New Zealand designers all working toward a common ideal: celebrating the importance of food, the bringing together of people, of sharing stories and enriching experiences with food on the table.
Each piece in the collection has been designed and made in New Zealand, and produced from sustainable high quality material, with permanence and timelessness in mind.
SeaT. A unique idea, made available to the world through sensitive and considerate commercialisation.
Initiated by David Trubridge. Delivered to the world by essenze.
With all Kiwis enjoying an open and easy embrace of the seashore, this is a place that unifies and unites us, levels us and strips us. On the seashore, the beach, we are enriched - holidaying, exercising and eating there. In this relaxed setting, eating regains its place as the central ritual binding friends and family. One of the greatest aspects of SeaT has been the collaboration – and we are planning a series of future collaborations with New Zealand designers based on activities. Eat as in SeaT – will be followed by themes such as play, sleep, and ... hopefully many more, so please watch this space for your share of New Zealand. SeaT - Defining our place beside the sea
New Zealand, Aotearoa, the land of the Long White Cloud. A country rich in natural wonders and beauty. Where majestic mountains tower over the lush forests of hidden valleys. Endless rolling hills ripple with golden grass. Deep rainforest echoes with birdsong. And all of these are embraced and captured within a land of apparently endless coastline. The sea, evocative companion to all New Zealanders, has been the inspiration behind SeaT. A force that has driven a diverse group of New Zealand designers to work collaboratively on a project focused on capturing the shapes, textures, emotions and sensations of the seaside.
The initiative of David Trubridge, drawing on his expertise and working with other designers, utilising glass, ceramic, wood, metal or textile, the brief was to recreate the experience and ritual of sharing food by the sea.
While the collection embraces and illustrates the theme of eating by the sea, it is a transferable concept that can be applied in modern everyday settings the world over. SeaT.
With a defined process, an adherence to the common aim and the choice of materials that reflect the compelling idea, the inspiration and the ideal from the New Zealand daily life, is now being shared with the world through the SeaT collection. Designed with sensitivity to the importance of the food occasion, the SeaT range is about bringing people together to share food, stories and experiences, to learn and to play, and most importantly to enjoy life.

Simon James
David together with his wife and their two sons arrived in New Zealand on their sailing boat from the UK, 20 years ago. Originally trained in naval architecture, David is New Zealand’s pre-eminent lighting and furniture designer with an extensive international fan community. David is a visionary with strong focus on sustainability and an outstanding talent to translate his visions into functional and beautiful objects.
Matthew works in bronze, cast iron and silver, specialising in custom projects for commercial and residential environments. Originally trained as a jeweller, Matthew produces a line of contemporary jewellery, as well as distinct indoor and outdoor furniture. Matthew is constantly inspired by New Zealand’s diverse Pacific coastline, where he spends as much time as possible riding waves and catching fish.
Ed first came to New Zealand in 1996 to design the interior of a super yacht. Trained in the UK in industrial design and traditional cabinet-making, Ed’s furniture is designed to last for generations. Ed’s design approach is to distil a concept down to its simplest form, whilst retaining visual interest through detail and subtle classical character through well-balanced proportions.
Jo studied art, film and design, establishing Phoenix Ceramics in 1996 where she is the lead designer, but also in charge of tea, coffee and sales. Jo works in a variety of media including photography, textiles, print and ceramics. In her spare time Jo likes to make documentary films, paint, renovate a rundown “bungalow” and make the world a better place for the children.
Simon is a well established New Zealand designer. He produces his own furniture locally and exports. Some of Simon’s pieces are manufactured under license by leading design company Idee in Japan. His minimalist approach is immediately obvious in all of his work, which ranges from designing furniture and objects through to interiors and exteriors for both commercial and residential environments.

Fletcher Vaughan
Clare Mora
Peter’s rich knowledge of glaze and firing techniques merge to create a bounty of forms and finishes that inspire respect, and beg to be touched. Some pieces are almost frightening with their intense colours and seemingly fragile edges. Other pieces are models of simplicity and elegance. Peter’s work is collected all over the world and gifted to high profile New Zealand visitors - amongst them Nelson Mandela.
Susannah utilises ceramics, concrete, structural steel, copper and fabrics, to create her range of furniture, lighting, and large-scale sculpture. The work features a unique mix of hard, strong and soft, delicate lightfilled objects. With the diversity of work and her unparalleled exploration, Susannah is rated a leading contemporary ceramic artist in New Zealand.
Julie masters a range of media from metal to fabric through to jewellery and ceramics. A constant theme that runs through all of her work is an interest in the methods and media of textiles - especially the woven, printed and carved patterns of the Pacific region. Julie’s recent work continues this theme, with the use of screen-printing on glass or ceramic surfaces in bold contemporary colours.
Fletcher is an Auckland based furniture, product and interior designer who has garnered respect from clients and the New Zealand design industry alike for his craftsmanship and originality. Fletcher is confident working on commercial work as well as residential, and has an extensive portfolio, ranging from furniture and product to interior design and public art.
essenze is the strategic business partner of choice for New Zealand’s best designers, and is responsible for the international commercialisation, marketing, distribution and sales of their work. One of the best things about SeaT has been the fun at meetings, interacting and collaborating with such an interesting and talented group. We have both learnt so much more about the design process, and other disciplines. We always find it so rewarding to work with people of such wide experience from the fresh young bloods with all their up-to-date technology to the more mature designers with their wealth of knowledge. We always leave the meetings full of inspiration and enthusiasm. Julie and Peter Collis, Designers
