peaks and troughs. Leap forward to the first home game of the club’s 20th season on March 15, 2014 and the team is now known as the Vodafone Warriors – and has been since 1999 – the competition is the National Rugby League (NRL) and, for game in Auckland won’t be what is now Mount Smart Stadium but will instead be the country’s biggest stadium Eden Park. How times have changed. In three one-off matches in 2011, 2012 and 2013 the venue has generated the three biggest home crowds in the Vodafone Warriors’ history ranging from 32,000-plus to more than 38,000. Only three weeks ago Eden Park was a sell out for the riveting inaugural NRL Auckland Nines, an event where football met festival to produce a fizzy if not dizzy fiesta which left everyone wanting more. It’s all proof positive that the Vodafone Warriors and rugby league operate on a level unimaginable not too many years ago and now the festival’s set to continue with the Vodafone Warriors kicking off a three-act Season of Eden against St George Illawarra on March 15 (kick-off 5.00pm). “This is a massive season for our club,” said Vodafone Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah.

MANNERING JOINS ELITE LIST
THE 10-SEASON CLUB As the Vodafone Warriors eye the start of their 20th season in existence, they’re also saluting the newest member of their elite 10-season club. Captain Simon Mannering will become the sixth member of the august group. In a year marked by the launch of the Warriors Forever theme, it’s pertinent that he’s the third 10-season member in this year’s squad and the fourth player in as many years to clock up the feat. Mannering (27), who made his debut as an 18-year-old in 2005, also has two other major milestones in sight. He’s set to captain the Vodafone Warriors for the 92nd time in their fourth-round match against Wests Tigers in Wellington — once home to him — taking him past Steve Price’s current record of 91. He is also just 12 games short of becoming only the second player to appear in 200 NRL matches for the Vodafone Warriors.

For two stunning days in February the country’s biggest stadium rocked to the mesmerising beat of what instantly became something of a sporting phenomenon – the NRL Auckland Nines. Eden Park hadn’t seen anything like it before and now it’s all set for more as rugby league in its traditional form returns to the stadium for the Vodafone Warriors’ run of three home games early in the 2014 NRL season. The thousands of fans who packed the place out couldn’t say enough about the Nines nor could folk in cities and small towns up and down the country, across the Tasman and elsewhere around the globe. The tournament was an emphatic success helped no end by the fizz the Vodafone Warriors added through their dazzling run through to the semi-finals. The reception they received just warming up in front of the North Stand was astonishing. Dressed to skill in their electric Canterbury of New Zealand High Voltage kits, the Vodafone Warriors enjoyed a level of support they’ve never experienced before. Playing in front of the biggest NRL crowds seen in New Zealand they thrived in the football-meets-fiesta atmosphere, putting them in great stead for their return to the park for their first home game of the NRL season against St George Illawarra on Saturday, March 15 (5.00pm kick-off). the VODAFONE WARRIORS are both the NRL’s pacesetters and trendsetters on the apparel scene. Of that there is no argument. The club has established itself as the NRL’s dominant merchandise seller over the last few years — and the reasons were again there to be seen as Eden Park lit up for the spectacular NRL Auckland Nines on February 15 and 16. In brilliant summer weather, Eden Park was awash with colour and costumes, much of it in the shape of top-selling Vodafone Warriors jerseys and other apparel. Standing out among the traditional strips were two of the new kids on the block from Canterbury of New Zealand

MAKING A BIG IMPACT
THE NEW SIGNINGS
SAM TOMKINS
SAM TOMKINS made a grand entrance, as he was always going to do. There was never a chance his arrival would be a quiet affair. His pre-Christmas week-long promotional visit to Auckland started with coverage of his early-morning airport appearance — replete in a Vodafone Warriors member’s T-shirt — including a live cross on TV3’s Firstline. It was followed by a major media conference hosted by his new club’s principal sponsor Vodafone, other media commitments, community and promotional appearances, visits to key sponsors and two SkyJump leaps in the space of a few minutes. He was everywhere, which was to be expected of such a high-profile signing and a stellar achiever.
JAYSON BUKUYA
It was a little different for ex-Cronulla pair Jayson Bukuya and Chad Townsend when they joined the Vodafone Warriors (aside from Townsend joining Tomkins for the leap of faith/fear off the Sky Tower). They definitely qualified in the category of under-the-radar newcomers. That changed when the trials programme started. Tomkins was outstanding at the NRL Auckland Nines at Eden Park and so was Bukuya. Townsend wasn’t used in the Nines but all three stamped their class in the Vodafone Warriors’ final NRL trial when they swamped Brisbane 48-4 in Dunedin, underlining the reasons why they were all wanted by the club.

CLUB LEGEND TAKES CHARGE
NEW ERA FOR NYC TEAM As the Vodafone Warriors enter their 20th season in existence, Stacey Jones can reflect in the knowledge he’s been involved in the club’s life span for all but a few seasons. From 1995-2005 he was the face of the club as a player before heading offshore for two seasons with Les Catalans Dragons in the Super League. He returned home in 2008 in a part-time coaching role with the Vodafone Warriors and then had one last playing

season in 2009. The next three seasons were devoted to business interests, his old Point Chevalier Pirates club and working for the Auckland Rugby League before he was back with his beloved Vodafone Warriors for a third stint, first as junior recruitment and pathways coach last year and now taking over the helm coaching the club’s NYC side. It means the 37-year-old has been missing from the scene in an official capacity with the club in only five seasons although he was still involved in rugby league in those years. It was poignant that his first match coaching the Vodafone Junior Warriors should be against his junior club Point Chevalier in a trial on February 9. The club provided a career launching pad when he helped the Pirates emerge from the doldrums by taking them back into the Fox Memorial in the space of just two seasons. His growth continued as Vodafone Warriors’ development coach last year; now he is the critical component in nurturing the club’s potential NRL stars of the future.
