Sustainable Fashion What is Sustainable Fashion? Sustainable Fashion also called an ethical fashion or eco-fashion is an emerging trend that factors in sustainability in the textile industry. It includes clothing and accessories that are manufactured and used in the most environment-friendly manner which takes account of environmental and socio-economic aspects.

form of the Sustainable Fashion Strategy. It essentially highlights the importance of an eco-friendly production process that protects our environment by lessening the negative impacts. According to the shocking revelations from Earth Pledge, a non-profit organization, over twothirds of garment’s carbon footprint occurs after purchase. Timeless Design marimekko Marimekko is a Finnish design house celebrated worldwide for its original prints and colours. Founded in 1951 by a visionary woman Armi Ratia, Marimekko is said to be one of the world’s ďŹ rst real lifestyle brands combining fashion, bags and accessories as well as home decoration into one unique point of view. Over the years, we have remained true to our original mission. Through our timeless, distinctive and functional designs, we want to empower people to be happy as they are and through bold prints and colours. Every Marimekko product has to have that special something - the Marimekko magic that makes people fall in love with the product and take good care of it. Timelessness and functionality are at the core of our design philosophy. We design our products to stand the test of time so that they will bring long-lasting joy when cared for properly.

The choices made in design and product development significantly affect the environmental impacts of a product’s use and life cycle. Therefore a well-designed, timeless, high-quality and functional product is a sustainable choice.

OUR APPROACH TO SUSTAINABILITY Our value “fairness to everyone and everything” crystallises our sustainability thinking. We are not about trendy fashion. We create timeless, sustainable and functional designs that bring long-lasting joy to people’s everyday lives. Each of our designs must have that special Marimekko magic which makes you want to cherish yourself, as well as the product. Bringing joy to someone’s life must not be at the expense of others. We treat all people fairly and require the same of our suppliers and partners. We are inspired by nature and want to keep our muse healthy by treating her with respect. Our goal is to constantly reduce our environmental impacts. We stand by what we consider important and strive to become better every day, one design at a time. We believe in the power of

RESOURCE EFFICIENCY

MATERIAL EFFICIENCY The printing process and manufacture of fabric products almost invariably generate waste material, which we constantly strive to minimise. Cutting waste can be reduced at the design stage by considering the likely use of the product and by positioning the print on the fabric in such a way as to minimise wastage.

ALMOST 100 PER CENT OF WASTE IS REUSED It is our aim that all wastes generated by our fabric printing factory and head office are sorted for recycling. In 2017, 99 (98) per cent of the waste generated was reused in energy production or as recycled material. We constantly explore possibilities to reduce the waste generated by our operations, for example, by rationalizing our operating methods.

WOMEN WITH A PASSION FOR SUSTAINABLE FASHION

05 Looking Good Being Good : the collective responsibility of sustainable fashion

Many online businesses have tried to capitalize on the demand for sustainable fashion by “greenwashing”, or deliberately branding their products as eco-friendly to lure in customers. But for two young businesswomen, it was

For 20-year old Kathleen Gatchalian, a recent graduate of the University of Asia and the Pacific, inspiration came from learning about native woven fabrics and a stint with Gawad Kalinga. In November 2017, she launched her shoe brand, Neotiv, weaving hand-woven indigenous textiles into classic styles.

the desire to genuinely “give back”–and their love of fashion–which inspired and pushed them to set up their own sustainable fashion businesses.

While setting up the business was initially a school requirement, she knew that she wanted a concept thaat would be able to sustain her interest beyond graduation. More importantly, she wanted to build a business that could help and empower different communities.

“When you claim you are a brand that uses these types of fabrics, you at least try to make it a goal to actually connect with the communities that you work with. You don’t just go to a middleman and buy.”

A CHANGE OF LIFESTYLE

While the sustainable fashion movement continues to grow, barriers like price and affinity for trends and Western influences may hinder the majority of Filipinos from shopping sustainably any time soon. But production and consumption of sustainable fashion is a complex, nuanced process rather than a step-by-step procedure. A cotton shirt might be biodegradable, but requires 2,700 liters of clean water to produce.

Sustainable fashion needs to be inculcated as a lifestyle, because it calls for conscious and consistent learning in the way we choose our products. This helps equip us against greenwashing. “Just For 25-year old Anjeline Angeles, a full-time photographer and multimedia artist for DLD Studios, creating these connections plays a vital role in her advocacy of sustainable living and women empowerment. In May 2018, she launched secondhand clothing brand Sustainably Styled PH, which sends part of its profits to Ruhama, a shelter for abused girls.

She also taps models who share in her vision–a marine researcher-cum-diver and a self-love influencer, for example. “My vision was always to build a platform not just for selling clothes but also celebrating women… and also being good to the environment.” While Kathleen and Anjeline have met their fair share of challenges pursuing their respective businesses, the positive feedback from customers help keep their passion for sustainable fashion burning.

do your research and ask the experts.” advised Anjeline. “Don’t believe everything right away.”

“I was getting so many messages. I thought I was just doing something so small but it meant a lot to a lot of people,” Anjeline said. Customers were so enthusiastic about her cause that they began donating boxes of their old clothes by their own volition.

Buying second hand clothes is nothing new, but the sector has been growing considerably thanks to the Internet. The second hand market generated 360 billion US dollars worldwide in 2017, according to fashion resale service Thredup, with online sales of second hand items growing 35 percent against just 8 percent for brick and mortar stores.

WHY EVERY FASHION LOVER NEEDS TO GO THRIFT SHOPPING

VINTAGE CLOTHING AT THE BEST PRICES If you love vintage clothing, you can find trendy, stylish pieces no one else has at thrift stores. And the best part of thrifting for vintage is you’ll pay just a few dollars for an entire outfit. If you’re not into vintage, but love designer and name-brand labels, you’ll still love the thrift store. You can find great looking, expensive labels for a few dollars.

GET CREATIVE WITH A NEW STYLE When you thrift store shop, you can afford to change styles now and then. You can find inexpensive household goods in a style you’ve never tried before. Completely change out the decor in your home with thrift store finds that show your creative side.

2019

GUILT FREE SHOPPING Where can you buy an entirely new outfit, including shoes, for under $20? Only at the thrift store will you find that kind of value. Remember, designer and name-brand labels at truly inexpensive prices mean you can shop to your heart’s content without breaking the bank. However, the best reason to the thrift shop is it’s great for our earth. Thrift stores reuse and recycle clothes and household goods that won’t end up in the landfill. Reduce your carbon footprint and buy recycled clothing from the thrift store.

THRIFTING AS A FUN HOBBY It’s like treasure hunting. Thrifting is about the thrill of the hunt and the joy when you find that one-of-a-kind piece of clothing or antique household item. It’s akin to an archeological dig in that you might find a really old item once used in someone’s home that is now quite valuable. At a thrift store, you need not stick with clothing. You can find vintage small household appliances and even furniture. You may find an old brass candelabra to polish up for the sideboard in your home. Or you may find an old, antique globe with vintage maps of the continents. You don’t know what you’ll find until you’re there.
