AW15 PHOTOGRAPHY SHOOT FOR THE FUTURE
From its earliest beginnings to its digital future, photography is all about the alchemical blend of science and ar t. Everything that contributes to that perfect shot is a blend of luck, skill, craft, and technology. The Cobbler-in-Chief was inspired by how this blend of ar t and technology so closely resembles the way we approach our own craft, developing traditional shoemaking techniques for modern walks of life. Taking inspiration from every aspect of photography, from the skill of developing film, the details of technical equipment to the hectic lifestyle of a busy photographer, we exposed every angle of the photographer’s world, fusing technical fabrics with classic design, for functional, beautiful objects. Colours were inspired by beautiful landscape photography, with a wide spectrum of browns, tans, burgundies and blues, as well as plenty of black for good balance. The AW15 collection of footwear, clothing and accessories takes a photographer’s attitude to this theme, blending it gently into some pieces and going all-out for others, but always remaining cohesive and true to the assignment.

Irving Penn “A good photograph is one that communicates a fact, touches the heart and leaves the viewer a changed person for having seen it.” Film is the connoisseur’s preferred method of photography. The process by which photos are developed has hardly changed since the bir th of photography itself in the mid-19th Century, and is heavily rooted in that mysterious blend of ar t and science. This purist approach is perfectly reflected in the crasftmen-led way in which we create shoes in our Italian factory, with the entire collection taking inspiration from vintage photography, techniques, film, and the cameras themselves.

Irving Penn “A camera is part Stradivarius, part scalpel.” Three really is the magic number for Compass this season: combining John Thomas Smith’s 1797 ‘Rule of thirds’ theory of aesthetics and framing of a picture (in shor t: good things come in thirds), with the physical makeup of a camera body, where the larger central body is flanked by top and bottom pieces, often in contrasting materials. At Oliver Sweeney, we’re fuelled by our obsession for contemporary menswear and traditional craftsmanship.
CEO and Cobbler-in-Chief at Oliver Sweeney, Tim Cooper is a third-generation shoemaker who has been in the business for over three decades. Star ting his shoemaking career in a French shoe factory in Alsace in 1982, Cooper has worked in a wide variety of roles within the industry ever since.
Founded in Britain in 1989, we’ve been making shoes great for over 25 years. Taking diverse inspiration from around the world and filtering it through a British lens, we source the highest quality materials to craft shoes, clothing and accessories that reflect our customers’ individuality, flair and success. Our obsession with doing things properly star ts with those very customers. Connoisseurs, captains of industry and self-made men, they have been searching for something different that makes a statement about who they are. Once they discover Oliver Sweeney, they fall in love with the way we do things. They’re obsessed because they know we are too. From great design to great craftsmanship, great product to great customer service, we’re constantly refining our skills and striving for new ways to take the traditional and make it modern. Our factory in the Italian Marche embodies this process: run for generations by a family of shoemakers, our contemporary British designs are handcrafted with a dash of Mediterranean flair, softening the stiff upper lip of traditional manufacturing without compromising on quality.
Today, as Cobbler-in-Chief at Oliver Sweeney, he’s deeply involved in every par t of the running the company, and especially their shoemaking process, from choosing the finest materials to working with the family-run factory in the Italian Marche region. Cooper is determined to cherish and evolve the brand’s successful heritage with every shoe they produce, ensuring that every pair is the embodiment of original, British style.
