We serve a great God and He has called us to excellence as we seek to provide education with a Christian purpose.

LETTER FROM THE DEAN At the McGraw School of Business we define purpose as playing our part in God’s transformative power in the lives of students. From the business faculty, to our community leaders, University alumni and partners, we share a common vision of business students becoming young professionals influencing the Church, their community and the business world around them with excellence, love, kindness, and ultimately with the cause of Christ in mind. The business faculty and I are proud to report excellent progress for this academic year as measured by professional certifications, student engagement, professional intercollegiate competitions, and collegiate rankings. Our program helps to guide students to pursue their God-gifted Careers while helping them to find the specific Concentration which distinguishes them from their peers. At McGraw School of Business we actively Connect students with professionals through membership involvement with professional organizations. We also encourage students to pursue the professional Certification relevant in their area of study, and to then demonstrate their knowledge through Competing intercollegiately against schools nationwide. Then finally, through our Career Management program we require an internship of our students, all with the purpose of building a student’s resume for success and to hear the Calling of God on their lives.

The common goal of the McGraw School of Business faculty and the Weber Leadership Center is to strive to provide a valuable educational experience for each student interested in going beyond the class-room experience. One of the key, distinctive characteristics of the Olivet business program is the emphasis on leadership and the pursuit of professional standards and certifications.

Program Excellence ONU Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) The FBLA-PBL state and national conferences were both virtual due to COVID-19 concerns. Our students did not let the obstacles deter them from representing ONU with excellence. After earning 12 state titles in April, nine ONU-PBL students qualified for nationals: Ethan Barszcz, Lance Baumgartner, Brennan Carter, Morgan Dasch, Grace Klein, Patrick Lee, Olivia Leid, Ellie Murphy, and Susan Shin. In addition, senior Ellie Murphy was re-elected IL State President and sophomore Susan Shin was elected IL State Vice-President. “I am extremely proud of how our students competed and represented Olivet.” says Prof. Brad Thomas, “As their faculty advisor, I can simply say that they excel. It was a team effort and these young people supported each other during a tough year.” Approximately 1000 students competed at the PBL National Experience in June. Our team placed 5th in the nation in the highly competitive Parliamentary Procedure event. ONU “Parli Pro” team members: Ethan Barszcz, Lance Baumgartner, Brennan Carter, Morgan Dasch, and Ellie Murphy. Ellie Murphy took home another national title with a 1st place finish in the Justice Administration event. Furthermore, Ellie was elected as National President of PBL and leads this organization of nearly 10,000 members.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

ELLIE MURPHEY During my time at Olivet, the McGraw School of Business has played a significant role in my professional and personal development. As a freshman, I felt welcomed. I dove into starting a chapter of Phi Beta Lambda within the first two weeks of school. As I worked with faculty and students to launch our PBL chapter, I learned quickly how to strategize and market an organization. Prof. Brad Thomas became the faculty sponsor of PBL and under his leadership our chapter has tripled its membership. Through the Fall Leadership Workshop, State Leadership Conference, and National Leadership Conference, our members have been able to hone their professional skills, while making meaningful connections across the country. The experiences offered by the McGraw School of Business allow students to discover their gifts and vocational callings. The community I have found within the ONU chapter of PBL is one that will extend far beyond these four years on campus.

Under the recommendation of Dr. Paul Koch, I took a step of faith during the Fall 2018 and attended the American Studies Program in Washington, D.C. During this program, I had the opportunity to intern on Capitol Hill while taking classes pertaining to faith, justice, and philosophy. The remote learning experience truly changed the trajectory of my life. I found immense joy and fulfillment working alongside many who were different than me to achieve a common goal: justice. This experience brought me back to D.C. in summer 2019, once again working on Capitol Hill. At the time, I had no idea that these internships and experiences would be preparing me for an internship with NASA headquarters. As I began my first day with NASA this summer (virtually, of course) I was overcome with awe and gratitude for the experiences afforded to me by the McGraw School of Business. For each professor that poured into me, and every peer that encouraged me to keep going, I say thank you. 9

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

NICK STOEWSAND International business. Compare it to other areas of study and there’s a good amount of ambiguity with it. Accounting majors become accountants; engineering majors become engineers, finance majors become financiers or financial planners. But an international business major? I become… an international businessman? Well, yes. As a graduate of Olivet’s international business program, I had the incredibly unique and awesome experience of studying abroad in San José, Costa Rica during the fall 2017 semester. It was a 16-week program designed to push me, challenge me, and lead me to passions I didn’t even know I had. The program consisted of about 20 students. We lived with host families, immersing ourselves in the culture 100% from day one. We explored the harsh realities that Central Americans live with daily, and were encouraged to think of ways we could help, both while we were there and upon returning home.

10

My time in Costa Rica caused me to be conscious of which organizations and businesses we associated with and supported in the States, and what impact that was having on the Costa Rican economy. The study abroad experience was my springboard into my first job and career in international business. I currently work as a business advising volunteer with the Peace Corps in Costa Rica. I can not imagine applying for, let alone being accepted to, a position like the one I am in without having lived in Costa Rica, developing my language skills and acquiring comfortability with the culture. Without my amazing professors, this opportunity would have not happened for me. I’m eternally grateful for the McGraw School of Business and am so excited to see where this foundation takes me.

Program Excellence ONU Enactus Olivet’s Enactus team was a semi-finalist in this year’s U.S. National Competition. Olivet was among the top 8 teams in the nation out of almost 400 teams. Olivet’s Enactus team is a representation of all the Watch the 12-minute award-winning students in the McGraw presentation on Olivet’s YouTube channel. School of Business. They are devoted to taking entrepreneurial action for others and creating a better world. The Enactus chapter is the largest club on Olivet’s campus, reflecting the strength of degree programs offered by McGraw School of Business. The emphasis on education, practical experience, and service is a winning combination for providing an “Education with a Christian Purpose.”

there and lends a listening ear to all my stories and struggles. She pushed me to go beyond my comfort zone and has been a significant impact on my life. Also, Prof. Brad Thomas, Dr. Lynda Allen, Dr. Glen Rewerts, and other faculty have helped in the decisions I made.

Another thing I am passionate about is ministry. Through this career path, I would love to have an impact on the lives of others. My faith has played a significant role in my education experience. It has become my core, foundation, and identity. It enables me to walk difficult paths and teaches me to be a good steward in everything I do.

Along with all of these, my friends have always welcomed me and have been there for me in times of difficulties. I also have had the privilege of being a part of various clubs, namely MuKappa International Club, Enactus, Marketing, and the Asian Student Christian Association. All these have been very formative to my educational and spiritual formation. I want to express my gratitude to the McGraw School of Business for giving me a holistic educational experience.

Many people have impacted my life over the past four years. My supervisor, Jasmine, has always been

Program Excellence ADventure Roadtrips ADventure Road Trips provide students with a significant way to interact with the industry. Marketing students have the opportunity to travel to Chicago, the third-largest city in the United States, and visit some of the best companies and agencies in the world. Our field trip attendees get to tour the offices, discuss roles with working professionals, and ask questions that will further their understanding of advertising and marketing. Assistant professor Chris Perez stated, “You can’t teach a love for marketing in the classroom. However, our rising leaders catch excitement about working in the industry through experiences that give them the chance to connect and talk to industry professionals in a relaxed setting.” In the fall 2019 semester, a group of students had the opportunity to attend the American Advertising Federation’s Hall of Achievement awards ceremony. They were able to meet and be inspired by AAF Hall of Achievement inductees as they shared their experiences working as young marketing professionals. These marketers represented works from brands such as Procter & Gamble, Apple, Facebook, Allstate, Ford, and Twitter. Marketing major Peyton Thibault, who attended the event, remarked, “It was truly an honor to attend the Advertising Hall of Achievement. It was incredibly inspiring to hear from so many advertising influencers.” Early in the spring 2020 semester, another group of students traveled to Energy BBDO and the Vienna Beef Headquarters. There they were able to meet with both the senior vice president of marketing and eCommerce and the graphic designer and marketing coordinator for Vienna Beef. Drake Silver described his experience on the trip. “Visiting Energy BBDO was a unique career-building experience that allowed me to see how it feels to work in a corporate marketing agency.”
