COMPETITION (NSAC) 11th in the nation out of 103 universities

INSIDE THIS EDITION

Dear Friends of the McGraw School of Business,

As we navigate the currents of life, the timeless wisdom of being prepared echoes through our endeavors. Today, I urge not just our students and alumni but the entire Olivet community to embrace this ethos: “Be Prepared.”

“And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut.” – Matthew 25:10

In this passage, we encounter a moving parable shared by Jesus, emphasizing the virtue of readiness. Ten virgins awaited the bridegroom’s arrival to join the celebration. Half, wise in their preparation, carried ample oil for their lamps, while the others, ill-prepared, rushed to procure more. When the moment arrived, those who had

readied themselves entered the festivities, but the unprepared were left outside, their opportunity missed.

This parable resonates beyond its biblical context, illustrating the broader truth that readiness, whether spiritual or practical, fortifies us for life’s unexpected turns. Spiritual preparation, especially, equips us for crises and opportunities alike. Just as a well-tended lamp sustains light through the night, nurturing our relationship with the divine ensures we shine brightly even in the darkest hours.

Consider the innumerable scenarios where readiness proves invaluable: confronting crises, sharing faith, communing with God, comforting the sorrowful, resisting temptation. Each demands a reservoir of spiritual strength cultivated through daily prayer, study, and reflection.

Therefore, I extend an invitation to embark or recommit to this journey of spiritual readiness. Discipleship transcends mere academic pursuit; it’s a daily choice, a lifestyle anchored in preparedness. Let us not defer this imperative but embrace it now, laying the foundation for resilience and grace in all our endeavors.

Together, let’s heed the call to readiness.

His journey, spanning over three decades, is marked by a steadfast dedication to his students, a commitment to innovation, and a profound understanding of the broader implications of economics.

Dr. Koch’s passion for economics was ignited by a transformative undergraduate professor and further fueled by a pivotal experience in Washington DC. These formative moments laid the foundation for his illustrious career, which saw him devote 32 consecutive years to teaching economics at Olivet.

Throughout his tenure, Dr. Koch emphasized the relevance of economics beyond finance, championing its role in decision-making and stewardship. He navigated through the complexities of the 2008 financial crisis, guiding students through real-world economic challenges and imparting invaluable lessons in resilience and adaptability.

As the educational landscape evolved, Dr. Koch remained at the forefront of innovation, leveraging technology to enhance teaching

methods while never losing sight of the importance of subject matter engagement. His teaching philosophy, inspired by Parker Palmer’s “The Courage to Teach,” fostered a collaborative endeavor between teachers and students, centered on a shared exploration of the subject matter.

Looking ahead to retirement, Dr. Koch intends to stay connected to economics through scholarly discussions and ongoing learning. JACK BOVA

Hailing from Hudson, Ohio, Jack’s story is one of resilience, ambition, and unwavering faith.

Jack’s path was paved with the dream of entering the construction industry, a realm where his passion could flourish. With this goal in mind, he pursued a major in Business Administration with a focus on Operations Management, complemented by a minor in Finance. He believed this combination would equip him with the versatile skills necessary to thrive in various roles within the construction field.

His time at Olivet has been nothing short of transformative. Amidst the academic curriculum, Jack found solace and camaraderie among friends who became like family. Late-night conversations, shared laughter, and the bonds forged in those moments made Olivet feel like home.

Beyond the classroom, Jack immersed himself in campus life, leaving an indelible mark through his involvements. He served as the tight ends coach for the football team, embodying leadership on and off the field. Additionally, he held the positions of president of the Discipleship Bible Study and internship coordinator for the School of Business, demonstrating his commitment to both spiritual growth and professional development.

Jack’s tenure at Olivet was not without challenges. A promising football career was cut short by

injuries during his freshman year. However, rather than succumbing to adversity, Jack chose resilience. He transitioned from player to coach, turning setbacks into opportunities for growth and learning invaluable lessons that transcended the confines of the classroom.

His journey is punctuated by notable achievements, including graduating in three years and securing a job as a project manager at Forest City Erectors—a testament to his dedication and hard work. Jack’s contributions to the Olivet community were recognized with the prestigious Barnabas Award for the School of Business, affirming his impact and leadership.

Through it all, Jack’s faith remained steadfast, guiding his decisions and shaping his experiences. His mentor, Dr. Rewerts, played a pivotal role in nurturing his spiritual growth, instilling values of integrity and service that have become the cornerstone of Jack’s character.

As he embarks on the next chapter of his life, Jack remains steadfast in his long-term goals—to excel in the construction industry and eventually own a livestock farm to provide for his family. His journey serves as a testament to the power of perseverance, the importance of community, and the profound impact of faith in guiding one’s path. In the annals of Olivet University’s School of Business, Jack Bova’s story will stand as a testament to the transformative power of resilience, determination, and unwavering faith.

JENNA MERRILL

A native of Bloomington-Normal, Illinois, has distinguished herself at Olivet Nazarene University through her unwavering commitment to faith, scholarly distinction, and involvement in the community.

After embarking on a dual-major program in Intercultural Studies and Business Administration, Jenna’s trajectory underwent a significant transformation when she identified her ardor for accounting during her sophomore year. With the encouragement of her professors and a passion for mathematics, she changed her major to Accounting while continuing her Intercultural Studies.

Jenna’s time at ONU has been transformative. The university’s nurturing environment, coupled with the strong bonds she formed with friends and mentors, made it feel like a second home. Jenna’s growth over the past four years is a testament to the supportive community and the enriching experiences she encountered.

Active involvement on campus has been a significant part of Jenna’s college life. She participated in the Preaching and Music Ambassador Program, traveling and preaching at various churches. As President of the Accounting Club and a leader in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, Jenna demonstrated exceptional leadership and a commitment to service. Under her guidance, the VITA program helped file over 600 tax returns, providing valuable hands-on experience for students and essential services to the community.

Her achievements at ONU are numerous and commendable. Jenna is particularly proud of her contributions to the Accounting Club, which facilitated connections between students and industry professionals. Completing 150 credits to meet CPA requirements and gaining practical experience through a tax internship in Downtown Chicago are milestones that highlight her dedication and hard work. Jenna’s outstanding contributions and character were recognized with the prestigious Lydia Award, honoring her as a female student who embodies the Character of Christ.

Faith has been a guiding principle for Jenna throughout her college journey. She believes that true success lies in following God’s calling, a belief that has profoundly influenced her decisions and experiences. Jenna’s mentors, especially Professors Mills and Horton, played crucial roles in her academic and spiritual development, fostering values of integrity, service, and critical thinking. As she prepares to graduate, Jenna looks forward to beginning her career as a staff tax accountant in Chicago and studying for the CPA exams. Her long-term goals include becoming a certified CPA and eventually opening her own local coffee shop. Personally, she aspires to travel and explore the beauty of the world.

Jenna Merrill’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, the importance of community, and the profound impact of faith. Her journey at Olivet Nazarene University’s School of Business reflects her dedication, growth, and unwavering commitment to her goals and values.

Accounting at Olivet

In recent years, Olivet Nazarene University has witnessed a remarkable surge in the popularity of its accounting program, under the guidance of Professors Dave Horton and Tricia Mills.

With a three-year growth rate of 295%, the number of accounting majors has skyrocketed from 37 to 109. This phenomenal expansion can be attributed to strategic changes implemented within the curriculum and a growing recognition of the importance of accounting skills in various industries.

A key catalyst for this surge has been the transition to a fully digital platform for assignments, coupled with the introduction of Financial and Managerial Accounting courses for all first-year business students. This proactive approach has enabled students to discover their aptitude and interest in accounting earlier in their academic journey, prompting a surge in interest in the program.

Rather than displacing existing majors, the accounting program has been seamlessly integrated as an additional option, recognizing accounting as the foundational language of business. Many students opt to pursue double majors in accounting and finance, a combination that not only enhances their understanding of financial principles but also fulfills the 150-hour requirement for CPA licensure in Illinois.

The revised curriculum ensures that upon completion of the accounting degree, students possess the requisite accounting hours and course credits necessary to pursue CPA licensure. This strategic alignment with licensure requirements enhances the marketability of Olivet’s accounting graduates in a landscape characterized by a high demand for skilled professionals.

The burgeoning demand for accounting talent is evidenced by the robust internship opportunities available to Olivet students. Accounting firms and businesses actively seek out Olivet graduates for internships and job placements, reflecting the high regard for their character and work ethic. From internships at prestigious accounting firms to coveted positions at top-tier national firms, Olivet students are inundated with opportunities.

Witnessing the growth and success of accounting students, observing their confidence blossom, and supporting them on their professional journey is immensely gratifying for faculty members. Playing a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of accounting professionals is both a privilege and a blessing for Professors Horton and Mills.

As Olivet’s accounting program continues to flourish, its commitment to excellence, innovation, and student success remains unwavering. Through dedicated faculty mentorship, practical curriculum enhancements, and robust industry partnerships, Olivet continues to produce accounting graduates poised for success in today’s dynamic business landscape.

Olivet Nazarene University’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

(VITA) program has once again concluded a remarkable year, leaving a significant impact on both campus and community members.

With over 630 federal and state income tax returns prepared, student volunteers demonstrated their commitment and expertise, ensuring a seamless process for all participants. The reach of VITA extended far beyond the university grounds, offering invaluable assistance to individuals in neighboring communities. By providing their services free of charge, VITA volunteers exemplified the university’s dedication to community engagement and service.

By offering quick, transparent, and professional services, VITA minimizes tax payments and maximizes returns. The program emphasizes interpersonal communication, ensuring that attendees receive personalized assistance and gain valuable insights into the tax-filing process. In an era of online tax filing, VITA fills the gap for those who lack the resources or expertise to navigate the process independently.

As accounting professor Tricia Mills attests, “VITA is such a wonderful experience for both the students who learn so much through hands-on, real-life scenarios and for our local community members who express deep gratitude for our free assistance.”

Microsoft Office Specialist National Championship

The Microsoft Office Specialist National Championship, presented by Certiport and sponsored by Microsoft, is a prestigious competition showcasing the technical skills of students across the nation. At Olivet’s School of Business, the qualifying certification exam for Microsoft Excel is embedded in the BSNS 171 Computer Applications and Communication course, which also covers Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Students who excel in this course have the opportunity to compete in the national competition.

This year, over 217,000 students aged 13 to 22 from across the United States participated in one of six competition tracks by passing certification exams in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The top three students from each state advanced to the national finals, with the winners moving on to the World Championship in Orlando, Florida. At the national competition, finalists were tasked with precisely recreating documents, spreadsheets, or presentations. The first-place winners received a $3,000 cash prize, second place $2,000, and third place $1,000. These winners will compete in the World Championship against finalists from around the globe.

Olivet’s McGraw School of Business is proud to announce the remarkable achievements of its students and faculty in the 2023 Microsoft Office Specialist US National Championship:

Marketing at Olivet

National Student Advertisment Competition (NSAC)

In a historic achievement, students from Olivet Nazarene University’s McGraw School of Business secured first place in the National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) at the D6 Regional competition held in Mishawaka, Indiana, on April 22.

This remarkable victory marks the first time Olivet has placed at NSAC, highlighting the dedication and talent of the participating students.

The NSAC is a highly prestigious competition, engaging over 100 colleges and universities nationwide, where students develop strategic advertising campaigns for real-world clients. Olivet’s team’s stellar performance in this competition underscores the caliber of the university’s academic and practical training.

“Over the years, a core group of student leaders emerged,” said School of Business professor, Chris Perez. “Lindsey Shouse and Morgan Schaafsma exemplified not only talent but also grit from their freshman year onwards. Year after year, they persevered in the competition, consistently raising the bar, and laying the groundwork for building a championship-winning team.” The presentation

team also included Tristyn Grube and Grace Trumbull, with project support from Rebecca Barak.

Olivet’s team has now qualified to compete at the national level, where they will showcase their innovative campaign strategies against the top teams from across the country. Finishing 11th in the nation among 103 competing universities and colleges, ONU’s accomplishment is a testament to the exceptional skills and dedication of its students.

This victory reflects the rigorous education and training provided by the McGraw School of Business, setting a high standard for future participants and establishing Olivet Nazarene University as a formidable contender in the realm of national advertising competitions.

ECONOMICS / FINANCE

Dan Ferris

In the ever-evolving landscape of finance, guidance from seasoned professionals can illuminate pathways to success for budding students. Recently, the Finance class at Olivet had the privilege of hosting Dan Ferris, CFP, a distinguished expert in estate planning, giving, and advanced financial strategies.

Dan’s journey is a testament to the diverse paths one can take within the financial realm. Armed with a degree in Mathematics from Olivet, he spent years shaping young minds as a high school math teacher before finding his calling in the financial sector. Now, as a member of the Foundation at Olivet, Dan specializes in estate planning and advanced giving techniques such as trusts and endowments.

During his session with the Finance class, Dan captivated nine out of twelve students with his wealth of knowledge and engaging presentation style. One of the key takeaways from his talk was the reassurance that it’s okay not to have all the answers immediately after graduation. He emphasized the importance of a solid understanding of statistics and its application in financial planning—a crucial insight for aspiring finance professionals.

What truly resonated with the students was Dan’s candor and practical advice. They appreciated his openness about his own career journey and found inspiration in his willingness to embrace change and follow the prompting of the Holy Spirit. As students delved into discussions with Dan, probing into his life and background, they gained valuable insights into the dynamic nature of careers in finance.

Prof. Doug Nielsen mentioned that Dan’s presentation served as a reinforcement of key concepts taught in the class. His insights provided real-world context and reinforced the importance of adaptability and spiritual discernment in navigating the complexities of the financial world.

The session in the classroom offered students a glimpse into the evolution of a successful finance career. His guidance underscored the transformative power of experience, mentorship, and faith in shaping the trajectory of one’s professional journey.

Jonah’s emphasis on going above and beyond to stand out resonated deeply with students, instilling a sense of purpose and determination in their academic and professional pursuits.

Jonah’s engaging presentation style and relatable delivery captivated students, addressing their concerns about workload and the stress of busy seasons. His willingness to engage one-on-one with students, offering resume advice and career insights, further demonstrated his commitment to their success.

Professor Tricia Mills mentioned, “I am immensely impressed by Jonah’s dedication to giving back to Olivet. His investment in our students not only enriches their educational experience but also fosters strong connections between our university and the professional world. It’s a testament to the symbiotic relationship between alumni and alma mater, where success begets success, creating a Win-Win scenario for all involved.”

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Anne Beiler

The McGraw School of Business at Olivet Nazarene University was honored to host Anne Beiler, the renowned founder of Auntie Anne’s HandRolled Soft Pretzels, as the keynote speaker for the second annual Createur Conference & Pitch Competition on April 15-16, 2024. With an attendance of nearly 700 high school and college students, faculty, alumni, and invested community members, the event was a remarkable success under the guidance of conference coordinator Karli Byrd.

Anne Beiler’s journey to success is nothing short of extraordinary. While she is best known for the success of Auntie Anne’s, her path was shaped by profound personal tragedy and resilience. The death of her 19-month-old daughter marked the beginning of a dark period in Anne’s life, leading to the near-collapse of everything she held dear. However, from this profound pain emerged a purpose-driven mission and an unwavering determination to succeed both personally and professionally.

Today, Anne is dedicated to teaching women how to overcome their pain and live out their purpose, turning adversity into a powerful catalyst for change. Her message at the

Createur Conference was a poignant blend of personal anecdotes and actionable insights, resonating deeply with attendees.

One student attendee reflected on Anne’s session, saying, “Her story was incredibly inspiring. Anne taught us not to give up on life, no matter how difficult it gets, and showed us how we can make a real difference. Her journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and purpose.”

Anne Beiler’s keynote address was not only a highlight of the conference but also a transformative experience for many. Her story of turning pain into purpose and her success in the business world provided invaluable lessons for all who attended. The McGraw School of Business is proud to have featured such a distinguished and impactful speaker, leaving a lasting impression on the future entrepreneurs and leaders in our community.
