A HEAD FOR BUSINESS A HEART FOR GOD
LETTER FROM THE DEAN
Greetings Friends of the McGraw School of Business,
Excitement resonates through the corridors of the Weber Center, creating a tangible buzz that's impossible to ignore. The dawn of a new era within the School of Business is upon us, and it's poised to be nothing short of transformative. Students, faculty, and cherished friends of Olivet are coming together with a unique and powerful initiative.
This groundbreaking endeavor is none other than the birth of a novel academic pursuit – the inaugural Olivet Entrepreneurship Degree. The grand unveiling will be accompanied by a two-day conference that includes an exhilarating SharkTank Pitch Competition. The energy on campus is soaring as various Olivet departments join forces, while other Christian colleges enthusiastically participate. Projections indicate that over 400 students will grace this momentous occasion.
The genesis of this endeavor can be traced back to a group of visionary alumni engaged in a spirited brainstorming session with President Chenoweth. They were on a quest to propel Olivet to greater heights, despite seemingly insurmountable challenges. Budget constraints loomed large, faculty were already stretched thin, and the prospect of embarking on something entirely new appeared daunting. Many deemed it an impossible feat, yet it was precisely at this juncture that our secret weapon emerged –Faith with the impossible.
In Judges 6:14, we witness the moment when Gideon, faced with the formidable Midianites, saw victory as an impossibility. And he was right
– from a human perspective. However, the instant God called upon Gideon to rise to the challenge, the realm of possibility expanded exponentially. Similarly, when Jesus tasked His disciples with the monumental mission of making disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19), it might have seemed implausible to some. Yet, if Jesus ordained it, it was indeed possible. When He instructed His disciples to love their enemies, it may have appeared unrealistic, but it was achievable because He would work through them to gain reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:19-20).
"God yearns to accomplish the impossible through your life, and all He asks is your obedience."
- Henry Blackaby
We extend a heartfelt invitation to you, inviting you to participate in this action-packed conference, whether as a friend, an observer, or a competitor in the upcoming year (please refer to page X for event highlights). Our aspiration is to transform this into an annual tradition, featuring nationally acclaimed keynote speakers and a thrilling competition that our alumni can eagerly anticipate, much like a second springtime Homecoming.
We eagerly anticipate your presence and look forward to welcoming you.

Program Excellence
In a world filled with complex financial responsibilities, Olivet Nazarene University and the McGraw School of Business have taken a proactive approach to support the members of our community through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. The VITA Program stands as a testament to our commitment to education, community, and service.
Designed with a clear purpose, the VITA Program aims to provide assistance to individuals facing unique challenges in their tax filing process. This includes the elderly, those with disabilities, limited English-speaking taxpayers, and individuals with a yearly income of $54,000 or less. At the heart of this initiative is an IRS-qualified site, hosted by Olivet, that serves as a training ground for students from the McGraw School of Business. These students are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to prepare basic income tax returns using IRS-approved tax filing software.
What sets the VITA Program apart is not just its technical competence but its genuine commitment to helping individuals navigate the intricate landscape of tax filing. The program prides itself on delivering services that are quick, transparent, and professional. Its primary objective is to minimize tax payments while maximizing tax returns for those it serves. Beyond the numbers and forms, VITA harnesses the power of interpersonal contact and communication to guide individuals through the tax return process and ensure that the presentation of forms aligns with individual preferences.
Tricia Mills, an accounting professor at Olivet, aptly describes the profound impact of VITA: "VITA is such a wonderful experience...for both the students who learn so much through 'hands-on' real-life scenarios and for our local community members who are just beaming with gratitude after having their taxes prepared for FREE! So many expressed deep appreciations for our help, and that resonated with our students!"
The VITA Program at Olivet is not just about tax returns; it's about empowering individuals with knowledge, fostering community bonds, and offering a lifeline to those who need it most. It is a testament to the spirit of service that thrives within Olivet's School of Business, where education goes beyond the classroom and touches the lives of those in our community.
Igniting the Entrepreneurial Spirit
The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Entrepreneurship is a program designed for students who want to start their own business, have a big idea or bring innovation and creativity to an existing organization.
The students studying entrepreneurship are equipped to start new ventures and foster their entrepreneurial spirit. At Olivet, entrepreneur majors will work with expert coaches and mentors as they learn to research, plan and pitch their ideas.

CREATEUR CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS
The heart behind organizing this conference was to create a platform for budding entrepreneurs to have:
Olivet Nazarene University's McGraw School of Business hosted its inaugural Createur Conference & Pitch Competition
April 13 to 14, 2023. It was a tremendous success with aprrox. Five hundred of conference attendees throughout the twoday event, including faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members.
Creator. This word was the driving factor to Olivet Nazarene University’s first ever annual Createur Conference. Professor Chris Perez discussed that God gave us imaginations, so we could create. The World began with the Creator. Such a gift, should be fed, watered, and invested in. This conference did just that. Students were given an opportunity to offer their own creative ideas to be critiqued and invested in by professionals. This provided students with real world experience and feedback from individuals who are in the place that the students desire to be in one day.
Walking into the 2023 Createur Conference, you could instantly feel the excitement in the room. From the music to the decorations, to those welcoming students, there was an anticipation for the events to come. Just from overhearing students talking with each other, there was a prior expectancy of gaining incredible knowledge and godly wisdom concerning entrepreneurial passions.
Connections - Build relationships with like-minded, faith-driven peers and professionals. Recognition - Discover how to identify potential new products or services that may lead to promising ventures. Entrepreneurial Alertness - Gain a readiness to act on existing but previously unnoticed business opportunities. Identify ones Calling – To explore how God can use an individual to solve problems and serve people through entrepreneurship.

SPARK SESSIONS
Attendees personalized the event by selecting from over 15 different spark sessions where they heard from proven entrepreneurs and industry leaders exploring the topics that interested them most. Students networked with their peers and business leaders during the evening dinner sessions with keynote speaker, Steve Green, president of Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc.
Each speaker had a specific goal to show how Jesus impacted their journey as a person and as an entrepreneur. There was a clearly Christ-centered approach to this event and that factor greatly increased the effectiveness of the event to the students.
One speaker, Daniel Kwak, is a serial entrepreneur, is also the co-owner of Kwak Brothers Real Estate. His Spark Session included all you
need to know about “How to Scale a Business God’s Way”. Kwak discussed traits that every entrepreneur should display, seven steps of how to scale a business God’s way, and an explanation of “What is God’s Way”.
Kwak was just one of the speakers that had an incredible impact on students during the Createur Conference. Local philanthropist, Warren Ouwenga, encouraged students, “Do not undervalue what you have here at Olivet. This world is starving for what you have.” What an encouragement to the students of Olivet Nazarene University, and truly a reminder that this is a special place and to not take classes, content, professors, and opportunities for granted as students can use what they have
received here to start their entrepreneurial journey and make a difference in the world for Christ Jesus.
When asked the question, “How were you most greatly impacted by the Createur Conference?”, pitch competition participant Tristyn Grube, sophomore at Olivet Nazarene University, answered with,
“I had so many great opportunities and connected with mentors who were able to help me with opportunities in the future! They also gave great advice for being successful in your career and never giving up.”

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: STEVE GREEN
Olivet Nazarene University had the honor of having Steve Green as the guest speaker both in Chapel on Thursday on April 14th and later that night at a special dinner in which he was the main keynote speaker. He spoke on his background and the life of his father, his relationship with God and the journey that brought him to where he is today. Approximately over 100 people attended this session who were keen to grasp everything that was being said.
Steve Green is President of Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., the world's largest privately owned arts and crafts retailer. Founded in 1972 by his father, David, in 300 square feet of retail space, the chain employs over 32,000 people and has grown to more than 750 stores in 47 states. Hobby Lobby sales for 2016 total more than $4.4 billion. He is a major financial supporter of Evangelical organizations in the United States and funded the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C. It holds a lot of major sites and a real-life replica of the Dead Sea scrolls.
One thing that he said that I was sure resonated with everyone was. "Give back to people along the way with time and resources."
His own life and experience watching his father taught him these lessons. His father pushed through the pressures of life and created Hobby Lobby and he later created the museum of the Bible. One of the major trials they pushed through was with Hobby Lobby and abortions which Hobby Lobby ended up pushing through and filing suit versus the law. It was a great example of how an organization can stand up for what they believe in according to God’s word and God will fight for them.
The two-day conference included speakers from several different arenas of business.

BEN HANSEN
In the heart of Kankakee, a remarkable journey of selfdiscovery and entrepreneurship began for Ben Hansen. Guided initially by a passion for sports and basketball, Ben's path took an unexpected turn, ultimately leading him to a newfound purpose during his transformative years at Olivet.
Ben's journey at Olivet commenced with a major in Business Administration, driven by a curiosity for creativity and a diverse range of interests. However, it was his deepening connection with people and his evolving sense of self that prompted him to embark on a double major in Business Administration and Marketing. As time passed, Ben realized that these majors weren't just a choice of study but a reflection of his life experiences and the essence of his identity.
During his senior year, Ben was a multifaceted presence on campus. As a Resident Assistant at Chapman Hall for two years, he provided leadership and encouragement to his peers. Ben also represented Rezlife on the board of Student Development and Advisory, showcasing his commitment to enhancing the student experience. Additionally, he took on a supervisory role at the Rec Center and secured an internship with Sodexo's marketing team. His involvement extended even further as he played a pivotal role in organizing the Creator's Conference, an event that catered to budding entrepreneurs and business enthusiasts.
Throughout his time at Olivet, Ben not only gained academic knowledge but also invaluable life lessons. His first and foremost lesson was "trusting God with everything." Ben's life journey has been filled with unexpected twists, and his unwavering trust in God became the cornerstone of his resilience. He also learned the significance of waiting on God, especially when circumstances appeared to be heading in a different direction. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of hard work, understanding that waiting on God should be complemented by persistent effort to reap the fruits of labor.
Ben's calling in life became clear during his time at Olivet. He realized that his purpose was to "be who God has called him to be." Embracing the uniqueness that defines every individual, Ben understood that his distinct qualities were meant to impact and serve others. With a deep sense of purpose, he dedicated himself to being a vessel for God's work, living his life in alignment with this divine calling.
Though Ben's journey at Olivet has concluded, his path as an entrepreneur and servant of others continues to unfold. His story is a testament to the transformative power of faith, perseverance, and self-discovery, all of which are integral elements of the entrepreneurial spirit thriving within Olivet University.

Global Immersion
The Global Immersion program is a new and exciting opportunity for all students to earn up to 9 college credits while learning leadership strategy and intercultural understanding. This past summer, under the capable guidance of Dr. Rewerts, a group of students embarked on an unforgettable adventure to the captivating land of Greece. A journey that extends beyond the ordinary, this immersive experience also counts towards General Education credits, offering students a multidimensional learning experience like no other. Our students not only had the privilege of witnessing the economic facets of Greece but also traversed through time, exploring its rich historic architecture. Their exploration extended beyond the mere realms of economics; it encompassed a holistic understanding of Greece's growth and success on a global stage.
"The Parthenon built in the 5th century B.C., now serves as one of the largest tourist attractions in Greece. Regardless how many people come to see the Parthenon, it has the best view to the city of Athens. It is breathtaking to view and a sight you’d never forget."
- Lily Bruner
"What was both amazing and sensational at the Theatre of Epidaurus was the echo created from the synchronized clapping in one large circle at the bottom of the Theatre. It made the most unique and riveting noise."

ECONOMICS/FINANCE PROFESSOR
Professor Nielson was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Olivet in 2009 as well as his Masters in 2012 and currently teaches finance at Olivet. Ever since he started working at the school, he has dedicated his life to serving the student, faculty, and the Olivet Community.
He is currently the Investment Club Faculty Sponsor and oversees the Investment Club as a whole. They have currently funded a scholarship that started from 1000 dollars and is now 2000 dollars. The Investment Club has led to a lot of jobs and internships, because of the real-world practical application and the significant financial decisions that students are making. The Investment Club has also grown and diversified over the years. There has been an increase in students from different backgrounds, majors, ethnicities, and cultures.
once they heard about the club and what it had to offer really took initiative and really became a part of the Olivet family.
One Life Lesson that has impacted and resonated with him was “Understand what God wants you to do for your life, and he may not reveal it to you until you’re ready to understand what he wants you to do. Often times you may think God is not telling me what He wants me to do and there is two reasons for that. One is, He’s either telling you are you’re not listening or… you’re ignoring him. So,
don’t be afraid to not know where you want to go and what you’re called to do." ~Professor Nielson.
It reminds us that no matter what we’re thinking God is always present and He cares and He wants us to succeed. We should trust that He will never let us go astray and He has promised in Deuteronomy 31:6 that He would never leave us or forsake us.
“The reason is finance is something that applies to everyone, and I want people to be passionate about it and understand it.”
~ Professor Nielson
With the Impact that Professor Nielson has had at the school and his care for students he has had the honor of having a tree planted in his name. His character and vision ignited a passion and fire and brought out greatness in students like Jacob who

At the McGraw School of Business, we take pride in nurturing the leaders of tomorrow by providing them with opportunities that bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world challenges. A substantial number of our students have had the privilege of interning at prestigious organizations and renowned companies around the world.
