15/16 PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT

1

Dear Friends, I’m pleased to provide you with this top-level summary of key highlights from the 2015-16 year. As you’ll see on the pages which follow, Olivet College continues to manage its resources well; plan and invest for its future; grow, develop and strengthen its programs; and make a difference in the lives of our students, employees, alumni and friends. The college’s strategic plan, Charting the Course to 2020 and Beyond, has guided much of this work since its adoption in 2012. This past year, we evaluated our plan and found that, with a few small adjustments, it continues to resonate with our mission and guides us toward the strong and vibrant college Olivet must become in the years and decades ahead. Throughout this report, you’ll read of some of our recent successes and see glimpses of our work ahead. The 2015-16 academic year hit a benchmark for student enrollment, exceeding the previous on-campus residential capacity. We met this demand through the acquisition of the Oak Hill apartment complex, providing an additional 70 beds to our inventory. The college also invested $2 million in renovation of the three primary housing facilities, Blair, Dole and Shipherd halls, bringing them into the modern era. With capacity expected to be exceeded again in another year or so, plans for a new housing facility are already underway. In this report, you’ll also see that the college continues to manage its finances effectively, even with an unprecedented competitive enrollment and economic marketplace and the heavy demands and expectations to

invest more in advancing the quality of learning and development of our students. Specifically, the college has been able to build its assets from $38.4 million in 2010 to a high of $56.2 million in 2016. Endowment has risen to $14.8 million in 2016, almost double the $7.4 million in 2010. The college has operated “in the black” each year with annual change in net assets (revenues in excess of expenses) of $4.6 million in 2016. At the same time, the college has been able to help its students afford an Olivet College education with total student grant aid in 2016 of $13.8 million, $10.6 million of which came from resources of the college and its donors. Finally, this report is also about saying, “thank you.” Thank you to our alumni and friends who gave of their own resources to help us fulfill the vitally important mission of Olivet College. We simply cannot do this on tuition revenues alone. We’re working hard to ensure that Olivet College is managed responsibly, strategically led, provides a high quality and transformative learning and development experience for students, and is worthy of your philanthropic investment. I’m pleased that so many have decided to join us in this venture and are grateful for your support. You are making a real difference in the lives of students and in the future of this great college.

With best regards and gratitude,

Steven M. Corey, Ph.D. President

Campus Project Updates

YOUR SUPPORT AT WORK During the past academic year support from our alumni and friends helped us to enhance academic programs and support faculty, and most importantly, it impacted the lives of students, both current and future, of Olivet College. Your generous donations resulted in academic facility enhancements for each and every program on campus, the improvement of team travel to allow our student-athletes to comfortably study on their way to and from games, and student housing improvements that help create a home away from home. Your support has enriched the student experience through the following improvements to Olivet College’s campus and programs:

Roznowski Learning Commons Dedication

ROZNOWSKI LEARNING COMMONS – $715,000 PROJECT The beginning of the last school year saw the opening of a new space on campus for students, the Roznowski Learning Commons, thanks in large part to its lead donors Steve ’82 and Melinda ’82 Roznowski. Located on the lower level of Burrage Library, the Commons is a modern, technology filled space designed to allow students to study quietly, meet and work with a team on a class project, or meet with a faculty member to discuss current events over a hot cup of coffee. The Commons has quickly become a popular and busy space supporting social learning styles of today’s students. In addition to the renovated public space, the college’s Information Technology department moved into the adjacent office space to allow for easier student interaction and technology support.

TEACHING AND LEARNING GRANT PROGRAM – $250,000 PROJECT Proposals for projects for improving the learning experience of students were solicited from the faculty in 2015. Eight proposals totaling $250,000 were funded as part of the Teaching and Learning Grant Program, supported by generous donations to the Leadership Fund of the Comprehensive Campaign. To date, completed projects include renovations to the band and choir rooms, the completion of a first-ever exercise science teaching laboratory for use by students in health and human performance classes, new equipment for use by students in the journalism and mass communication program, and start-up funds for the Hiram Archer Society- a peer mentoring and student success group for black students. Projects still underway are a new psychology observation laboratory, a mini-grant program to support independent research projects by students in the natural and physical sciences, and ongoing student success programming hosted by the Speare and Gruen Student Success Center. These opportunities have impacted both faculty and students by creating opportunities to learn beyond the walls of a classroom.

MOTT ACADEMIC CENTER – $2,100,000 PROJECT AND UPTON CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC – $600,000 PROJECT Mott Academic Center serves as the learning hub for students at Olivet. The goal during this past year was to complete the planning and design work for renovations that will enhance and modernize the entire facility. This work was essential to allow the college to begin seeking additional funding so these renovations are possible in the near future: fully renovated classrooms with updated furniture, technology, and heating and cooling; laboratories; faculty and study engagement areas; common areas; bathrooms; lighting; faculty offices; and entrances to the facility including improved handicap accessibility.

Renovation plans for the Upton Conservatory of Music, home to a growing performing arts program, as well as a core of the humanities program, were also completed during the past year. Conservatory updates will be similar to those in Mott, with a focus on enhancing the physical spaces and technology used by students in every classroom. These renovation plans ready the college to move forward in its effort to ensure the college will continue to serve and meet students’ academic needs for decades to come.

CUTLER EVENT CENTER AND COLLEGE ATHLETIC FIELDS – $6,500,000 PROJECT With the number of student-athletes at Olivet College nearly doubling over the past decade, expansion to the Cutler Event Center is necessary to ensure the facility effectively supports the needs of student-athletes today and into the future. The comprehensive design process completed during the past year included coaches, alumni, players and trainers to guarantee every aspect was accounted for. The design and development process has prepared a plan that includes building a new weight and fitness facility, significantly

Continued from page 7 expanded athletic training facilities, additional offices for coaches and administration along with added conference space, extension of the gym to allow a second full competition court, doubling the space for wrestling and competitive cheer, development of a baseball press box facility that will contain restrooms and concessions, and significant enhancements to the joint soccer and lacrosse facility.

A COMFORTABLE SPACE TO LIVE, STUDY, MAKE FRIENDS AND CREATE MEMORIES

A future is now planned with access to state-of-the art fitness and practice facilities for student-athletes, space for coaches to plan and prepare for games, and adequate space for prospective students to feel comfortable when visiting campus to ensure that all Comet athletes have the tools to succeed on the field and off.

DOLE HALL WELCOME CENTER – $900,000 PROJECT Olivet College welcomed the second largest incoming freshman class in school history for the fall 2016 semester. The completion of the Dole Hall Welcome Center aided the college in achieving this mark. This project has given the college a front door through which the admissions staff welcomes our prospective students and their families. We all understand the power of a first impression and the new conference spaces, restrooms and comfortable waiting areas help our visitors establish a positive perception of the college, worthy of the topnotch academic and caring environment we all cherish.

RESIDENCE HALL RENOVATIONS – $2,500,000 PROJECT A comfortable space to live, study, make friends and create memories is a necessity to give Olivet students the best possible experience as a Comet. Their residence hall is their “home away from home.” As a significant amount of each student’s experience comes from their daily environment, the college invested in renovations for all of the residence hall bathrooms over the summer of 2015. To finalize the updates to the residence halls, the college will be updating all of the common and entertainment spaces during the 2016-17 academic year.

GREEK HOUSE UPDATES – COMBINED $1,500,000 PROJECT The Kappa Sigma Alpha fraternity celebrated a major milestone with the completion of their new house. After a number of years in the making, students were able to move into the house for the fall 2016 semester. The Phi Alpha Pi fraternity has similarly undertaken a fundraising initiative, and their early success has allowed them to complete renovations to the first floor and exterior of their house. The Elite fraternity has also worked with their alumni to raise funds to assist with the renovations for their new house on campus. After a number of years without a house, these young men were able to move into their home at the beginning of the current school year.

Student Experience

GIVING IS CONTAGIOUS

“Mr. Cutler has been so incredibly successful... but he still remains loyal to where he came from and is so generous! Ever since I met him, I knew those were two traits that I also aspire to have when I finish pharmacy school.”

MEGAHN (PIPER) LAMMERS ’15 IS INSPIRED BY HER DAVID CUTLER (’65) FELLOWSHIP EXPERIENCE

Just as a scientific discovery can have applications far greater than initially imagined, the impact of a gift to Olivet College can go beyond just the original recipient. The generosity of one particular Olivet College alumnus is proving to have a ripple effect, making a difference not just on the student-scholar, but on her peers. And on Olivet students of the future.

- MEGAHN (PIPER) LAMMERS ’15 Megahn (Piper) Lammers ’15

Nearing the end of her junior year at Olivet, Megahn (Piper) Lammers ‘15 knew that graduate school was right around the corner as the next step in her educational journey. A double major in chemistry and biology with a pre-medical concentration, she was one of the first students to be awarded the David Cutler Fellowship. Created to honor alumnus David Cutler ’65, the fellowship is an annual merit award given to a student entering his or her junior or senior year of study in math, science or computer science. The award was presented to Megahn with the expectation that she make a substantial contribution to the advancement of mathematics, science or computer science during her year as a Cutler Fellow. With her sights set on a PharmD, Megahn began examining graduate programs and preparing for entry exams. Realizing that many of her classmates were embarking on the same journey, Megahn decided that she would use her Cutler Fellowship to begin the Grad School Prep Group. Seniors from science majors were invited to meet every Wednesday throughout the academic year to share the research they had conducted on graduate programs, prepare questions they may encounter on entry exams, support one another in times of rejection letters, and celebrate together when acceptance letters arrived. “The prep group had an amazing impact on both myself and on my peers,” Megahn said. “It allowed us to be held accountable, have a support group full of people who knew exactly the way we were feeling about the future and the challenges we were facing in the present, and also allowed us to have a resource of information to prepare us for the next step.”

Megahn and her husband, Nick Lammers, celebrate her transition from preclinical studies to clinical pharmaceutical studies at her White Coat Ceremony, a symbolic right of passage for students in the health sciences.

Megahn was ultimately accepted into the PharmD program at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy where she is now midway through her second year of a four-year program. She said she is humbled to have been able to play a role in helping others achieve the same goal. After meeting David Cutler himself, Megahn said the fellowship really came full circle. For her, it was more than just the opportunity while she was attending Olivet College. It also launched her to become a successful alumna, and she can’t wait to begin giving back to Olivet herself. “Mr. Cutler has been so incredibly successful but hasn’t let that get to him at all. He still remains loyal to where he came from and is so generous! Ever since I met him, I knew those were two traits that I also aspire to have when I finish pharmacy school,” said Megahn.

Donor-Sponsored Opportunities

TO LIVE AND TO LEARN: SHAKESPEARE AND CLOSE READING Kirk Hendershott-Kraetzer, Ph.D.

Gifts to Olivet College come in many varieties, from all types of people and all gifts make a vital impact on the way students live, study and grow at Olivet. And sometimes, the combination of gifts allow for special outcomes. This is just such an occasion. During the past year, the annual gifts of many people in support of our academic programs allowed a special faculty member a unique opportunity to develop new methods to help his students learn more from their reading and study of literature.

During his 29 years of teaching experience, Kirk Hendershott-Kraetzer, Ph.D., has deployed many new teaching practices. Over the past few years he began to notice a trend that would cause him to develop a new one of his own. Hendershott-Kraetzer noticed an increasing number of his English and writing students were struggling with the ability to understand and decode complex sentence structures and ambiguous language. He theorized that this was due to lack of close reading, which is exactly what it sounds like: the critical, thoughtful analysis of a text. He believed the lack of close reading was a

result of the students’ hectic schedules, overload of commitments, growing reliance on 140 characters to communicate and general mindset of simply get things done as quickly as possible. To find a solution, Hendershott-Kraetzer traveled to the 2016 annual meeting of the Shakespeare Association of America in New Orleans. While there, he presented his research on the theory and methodology of close reading and was able to exchange practices with other professionals and professors from across the world, ultimately leading

to his development of a plan to aid his students upon his return. The trip also indirectly supported four additional projects Hendershott-Kraetzer was researching and allowed him to prepare for an Intensive Learning Term travel course to New Orleans focusing on the U.S. history of Civil Rights and slavery that he cotaught in the spring of 2016. Henderhott-Kraetzer’s action plan created a system for his students that ensured they would not overlook close reading. In each class, he covered exactly what close reading was, how to do it, and the results that should come of it alongside loads of practice. Although they struggled, by the end of the semester, his students demonstrated that they had developed strong close reading skills in their work in the classroom, on exams and papers, a major accomplishment in only one semester. The enlightenment and remarkable outcomes from Hendershott-Kraetzer’s professional development experience were made possible by generous donations by many who care about the academic quality at Olivet College. Their gifts, and yours, provide numerous opportunities for student and faculty experiences to help them all reach beyond the work they are focused on today to ensure Olivet students continue to benefit from an exceptional academic program.

“Because of alumni and friends who give back to the college, so many opportunities are available to faculty and students, and I was grateful to be able to take advantage of a number of those opportunities during the past school year. Thank you for the generous support!” - KIRK HENDERSHOTT-KRAETZER

OLIVET COLLEGE MISSION The mission of Olivet College is to make available to a diverse campus community, an education which will enrich lives intellectually, morally and spiritually. Having gained these qualities through the educational experiences at Olivet, our hope is that our graduates will embody the divine art and science of doing good to others as stated by the founding fathers of Olivet College in 1844.

OLIVET COLLEGE VISION Olivet College is dedicated today, as it was in 1844, to the principle that the future of humanity rests in the hands, hearts and minds of those who will accept responsibility for themselves and others in an increasingly diverse society. This principle of individual and social responsibility is realized in the context of a distinctive liberal arts experience which nurtures in our students the emergence and development of skills, perspectives and ethics necessary to better themselves and society. We seek to involve our students in an active academic community which cherishes diversity of thought and expression. In so doing, we will help our students discover ways they can most effectively contribute to the common good.

What’s to Come?

Dear Friends, I personally thank everyone who has made a gift during the past fiscal year to help us prepare our students to enter a world that needs the responsible leadership they learn at Olivet College more than ever.

Here is a list of projects we will be undertaking during the current fiscal year to continue the growth and evolution of Olivet College: » Projected Ground Breaking for the Gruen Engagement Center

Olivet College is a place where ideas come to life in the minds of young adults – ideas that expand each students’ understanding of the responsibility bestowed upon them to “Be More and Do Good” for themselves, their families, their companies and their communities.

» Finalization of the Hosford House and Lawrence Archive Center

A favorite speaker of mine, Simon Sinek, has a quote that I continue to believe wonderfully represents the mystique and allure of Olivet College for so many. “People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it. And what you do simply proves what you believe.” There are many institutions of higher learning that do a wonderful job of educating students, but I have always believed higher education is about more than just an education, it is the time when young adults discover the type of people they want to be and then take their first steps in becoming them. At Olivet College, we don’t simply teach our students the what of life, instead through responsibility, we also teach them the why.

» Launch of a competitive dance program

Your gifts have helped us share the why throughout the past year and with your continued support we will continue to improve the programs, environment and facilities that make this possible this year and for years to come.

» Final approval of a new student apartment style housing project » Beginning renovations of the Sigma Beta Sorority House » Finalizing renovations of the Phi Alpha Pi Fraternity House » Completion of common space renovations for the three traditional student dorms

The continued success of Olivet College is directly attributed to your willingness to support our important mission. With pride, we thank and recognize every individual and organization that supports our vision for a more responsible future.

Best regards,

B.J. Hull Vice President for Advancement

Olivet College is the great institution it is today due in large part to the loyalty of its alumni, friends, parents, students, employees and supporting organizations. An investment in Olivet College is an investment in the lives of thousands of bright and talented students who seek the opportunity to make a difference in our world. On the following pages, we recognize donors to Olivet College for both their lifetime long commitment to the college and also their support from July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016. Thank you for sharing in our efforts to build a more responsible future for everyone.
