2013-14 ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Friends,
Oftentimes, colleges are portrayed by their “ivory towers” and “ivy covered walls.” Visitors to campuses are awed by the history and majesty of the architecture and the stately grounds. For sure, Olivet College has its own history and majesty, be it Burrage Library, the beautiful oak groves, one of the historic Greek houses or some other building on campus. But what we recognize most at Olivet College is that these are but tools–important tools for certain–but they’re not really what Olivet College is all about.
Olivet College is ultimately about the community we create when we come together around our common cause. It’s about relationships and a relationship-based educational experience, between students and their peers and students and their faculty mentors. It’s the people of Olivet College, students, faculty, the staff who support them, alumni and friends, who make Olivet College a great place to live and learn. So this annual report attempts to celebrate, first and foremost, the people of Olivet College. You’ll read about some of our students, their faculty, and the staff who are doing exciting things and demonstrating what excellence is at Olivet College. You’ll also read about some of the alumni, friends and donors who, through their support and involvement, have helped to make it all possible. You’ll also see that Olivet College is strong and growing organizationally and financially. This includes increased endowment, multiple years of positive financial performance, growth in total assets and decreases in liabilities. In many ways Olivet College has never been more fiscally strong. In times of economic uncertainty, fierce competition and a rapidly changing global society, Olivet College is positioning itself to be strong, healthy and sustaining for many years to come.
To the many individuals, foundations and corporations who provided their financial support to help us achieve success, I say thank you on behalf of the entire Olivet College community; your support is well placed and is making a real difference. With very best regards,
Steven M. Corey, Ph.D. President

Olivet College introduced the accounting and business analysis in insurance majors during the 2013-14 academic year. With a total of 33 students within their first year, these majors are already contributing to Olivet’s quality academic environment.

“By evaluating existing and introducing new majors annually, we ensure that we continue to offer a meaningful and culturally relevant academic experience to our students,” said Maria Davis, Ph.D., provost and dean of the college. “Of course there is value in enhancing our historically significant majors – like English and music, for example – but new and enhanced majors energize a department.”

Dr. Davis noted that these majors were developed in partnership with industry and alumni representation. “We saw potential for growth in the Business Administration Department,” she added. “So we worked with those closest to the outcomes to ensure the new majors not only meet our academic standards, but the hiring standards of our industry partners, as well.”

Breanna Trudell
With plans to become a certified public accountant, senior Breanna Trudell (left) is majoring in accounting. She completed her first internship last summer with Rehmann, a regional accounting firm based in Saginaw, her hometown. The firm has already invited her back to work for them full time. When sophomore Megan LaForge (right) sat down with Carol Breed, J.D., professor of business and insurance, early in her freshman year, she had no set plans for her future. Together, they determined that the business analysis in insurance major was a good fit for her personal and career goals.

What does it take to earn Olivet College’s prestigious Livingston Professorship?
For John Wilterding, Ph.D., professor of biology and chair of the Natural and Physical Sciences Department, it took…
n n n n
18 years of service to the college more than 550 students advised approximately 234 classes and 4,000 students taught and, most importantly, enthusiasm for teaching
It’s this passion for teaching that earned Wilterding (above right) the professorship, Olivet’s highest teaching honor presented to a full-time, tenured faculty member. He was recognized for his exceptional abilities as an instructor as well as his commitment to the college’s mission. But don’t expect Wilterding to take much credit for the honor. From his perspective, Olivet’s students, faculty and staff have all helped him become a great professor. “I’ve learned how to be a better teacher from them,” he added. Hesitant to explain how he feels about the professorship, the word “humbled” comes to mind.
“In some ways it’s hard to explain… I wouldn’t succeed if it weren’t for all the great people here contributing to my success. It can’t work any other way,” he concluded. “There are many people working very hard here, contributing to the success of our students. I don’t just say that because I should; I say it because it’s true. Success doesn’t happen in isolation. I have a lot to be thankful for, working here, with the Olivet community.”

NEW ACADEMIC PROGRAM RECEIVES NATIONAL ATTENTION So students from Kansas State University, the University of Oregon and Olivet College walk into the New York Stock Exchange… This isn’t the start of a joke, but rather the trip of a lifetime.
Just ask sophomore financial planning major Trent Strang, one of 10 students nationally to receive the 2014 TD Ameritrade NextGen Scholarship. In addition to $5,000, he earned a VIP tour of the New York Stock Exchange trading floor, complete with an opportunity to ring the closing bell.
“Trent put our financial planning program on a national platform,” said Lynda Neff, assistant professor of insurance and risk management. “The other student representatives who received this scholarship all came from institutions significantly larger than Olivet. We are becoming a regional force in the world of financial planning – Trent helped do that for us. I’m proud of students like him and the work we’re doing here.”
“If there’s one professor’s class I didn’t mind rolling out of bed for at 8 a.m., it’s Dr. Wilterding’s,” said Jeff Holm ’14, a doctoral candidate in pharmacy at the University of Michigan. “Through his immense passion and enthusiasm for teaching, Dr. Wilterding finds a way to keep us on our toes and interested in the things he’s lecturing on.” Jeff Holm ’14

STATE-OF-THE-ART CLASSROOM AND LABS Behind (and around) every great faculty member is a quality classroom. Thanks to the generosity of Albert ’80 and Debbie Rosenthaler, (pictured above with Dr. Wilterding) the science labs at Olivet College are some of the best! In addition to renovations in Mott labs 403, 409 and 412, critical equipment was also purchased, including a sterile bacterial hood, low capacity ice machine, incubators, centrifuge, water baths, spectrophotometers and other technical tools and supplies. The result: our graduates are placed in nearly every imaginable professional and graduate school capacity, many prestigiously.

Student Experience OLIVET COLLEGE BANDS HIT A HIGH NOTE Olivet College bands received an exclusive invitation to perform in Paris as part of La Grande Parade de Paris – ChampsÉlysées on New Year’s Day 2016. The group was one of a handful of American ensembles scouted and selected by Youth Music of the World to participate in what will be one of the most exciting holiday parades on the globe.
“This is a prestigious honor for us and a tremendous opportunity for our students,” said Jeremy Duby, director of Jeremy Duby bands (above left). “The experience will be truly remarkable, as this is strictly an invitation-only event and we will be one of few bands from the United States to participate. Our students will not only get the performance opportunity of a lifetime, they’ll get to interact with musicians from all different cultures and backgrounds in one of the greatest cities in the world.”

Steven ’82 and Melinda (Strother) ’82 Roznowski Steven ’82 and Melinda (Strother) ’82 Roznowski committed support to the music program, which allowed the college to hire Jeremy Duby, director of bands. Duby is directly responsible for recruitment initiatives instrumental in rebuilding Olivet College bands to their former glory!
How do you honor the key technical mind behind the 50 million lines of code constituting Microsoft’s flagship product, the Windows operating system? You leave him a legacy, of course. The David Cutler ’65 Endowed Fellowship was established in 2012 by a few of Dave’s closest friends, including: John Balciunas, Bell Family Foundation, Steven and Connie Ballmer, Peter and Leslie Benoit, Steven and Traci Corey, Robert and Emer Dooley, David and Jan Hayhow, Nate Higgins, Gary and Christina Kimura, Cathy and Joseph Linn, Garret Madison, Thomas and Teresa Olson Miller, David and JD Orbits, Lou Perazzoli, David Robinson, Clyde Rodriguez, John and Nancy Rudolf, Matt and Amy Rudolf, Monica and Steve Rudolf Ferris, James and Jessica Rudolph, Mark and Daryl Russinovich, Christian Saether, Dave Thompson and Judy Jesiolowski, and Charles and Nancy Wickham.
ONE OF THE FELLOWS
Created to honor alumnus David Cutler ’65, the Cutler Fellowship provides an annual merit award to students who are preparing to enter their junior or senior year of study at Olivet College. Designated a “Cutler Fellow” in math, science or computer science, fellows demonstrate excellence in academic achievement, high levels of motivation and the potential for making substantial contributions to the advancement of these academic areas at Olivet College. To date, the Cutler Fellowship has been awarded to: Lindsey Winters ’14, and seniors Stephanie Lamb and Megahn Piper.
Lindsey Winters ’14 Dual major in math and computer science. Now employed as an application specialist with New World Systems “I feel very honored and blessed to have gotten this opportunity at Olivet College,” said Winters. “For students who are considering Olivet, I say always put forth your best effort and strive for success. You never know who is watching and what opportunities may come as a result.” Stephanie Lamb, senior Dual major in ecology/organismal biology and environmental science “I have the long-term goal of becoming a wildlife biologist or conservation scientist,” said Lamb. “I want my life’s work to contribute to the conservation of rare habitats and endangered species.” According to Lamb, her time at Olivet College has given her the confidence and knowledge needed to successfully work toward her career goals. “Students can get an education anywhere,” added Lamb. “But the constant personalized support from professors and staff truly sets Olivet apart. I plan to continue making the most of every opportunity, including this one.”
Megahn Piper

Megahn Piper, senior Dual major in chemistry and biology with a pre-medical concentration “If I have learned one thing at Olivet College, it is how important it is to impact others in a positive way,” said Piper. “This fellowship is my big chance as an undergraduate to help give back to this school in a very positive and encouraging way, and to help mold the careers of younger science majors for years to come.” 7
Student Experience OLIVET COLLEGE ART MAJOR GOES GLOBAL From Iceland to England, Greece to India… Olivet College students could be found in all corners of the world this last year. Some travel as part of Olivet’s three-week Intensive Learning Term, while others experience major-specific travel courses. Such was the case for 2014 alumna, Jenna Mayle. Last summer, Mayle advanced her significant artistic abilities in drawing and ceramics during a six-week program with the Studio Arts Centers International in Italy.
“At Olivet College, I learned about famous Italian works of art and architecture,” she said. “While in Italy, I got to see these works in person and draw them while on excursions for class. I refined my figure drawing skills, learned new techniques in ceramics class and experienced living in a foreign culture. My faculty mentors at Olivet were extremely important in connecting me with this opportunity. They helped bring my trip to life, and for that I am truly grateful.” Mayle is the second Olivet College art major to partake in an extended overseas experience. The previous year, Stephanie Craw ’13 traveled to Florence, Italy for an intensive experience with the Florence Academy of Art, where she studied under master painter Daniela Astone.

HOUSING DEMAND As Olivet College initiates discussions about new student housing, it faces an interesting development: where to put student overflow in the meantime? Olivet College’s residential student population increased 20 percent since 2010.

“In essence, we’ve maximized current student housing,” said vice president and dean of student life, Linda Logan, Ph.D. “We are continuously reevaluating our housing structure to optimize available living space. For example, we have designated that all female and male freshmen reside in Dole and Blair Halls respectively. To accommodate our anticipated demand on our housing structure due to an increasing student population, we are discussing Phase II of the Gillette Student Village and researching the potential for alternative housing options. It’s a great problem to have.” In addition to our residence halls, students also live in on-campus Greek housing. Adelphic, Elite and Phi Alpha Pi have all either recently completed or are actively fundraising for their houses. Kappa Sigma Alpha is also in the final stages of raising money to rebuild their house. To date, they are 85 percent of the way to their goal! For more information on financially supporting your Greek society, please contact Marty (Mason) Jennings ’67, director of alumni engagement, at mjennings@olivetcollege.edu.
GAMMA REPEATS INTERNATIONAL TITLE
Gamma Iota Sigma
Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS) is an international fraternity for students pursuing careers in insurance, actuarial science and risk management. Olivet College’s Alpha Alpha chapter just happens to be the best in North America.
“Two years in a row, Olivet College has earned the distinction of top chapter by receiving the Bowers Award,” said junior Eric Dawdy, GIS president-elect. “Out of the 50 active chapters, only Olivet College and Temple, St. Johns and Drake universities qualified to compete. When our name was called, I looked around and saw all our members cheering and jumping to their feet. This is why we won; our members are so committed to the program.” One might believe Dawdy and team won this award because of the program’s 100 percent job placement rate, state-of-the-art curriculum or strong industry support. Which could be true; but they also won it because of their commitment to building members into responsible alumni.
Eric Dawdy
The words knowledge, integrity, fidelity and friendship define Gamma’s mission. Mentoring high schoolers, reading to elementary children, planning an Easter Egg Hunt for local youth, acclimating freshmen into Gamma, cleaning Thornapple River, volunteering at Siren Eaton Shelter and collecting canned goods for the Good Neighbor Food Pantry are just a few ways their mission came to life during the 201314 academic year. “Our mission can be narrowed down to one thing: help our members be successful, however they define success,” said senior Andrew Simms, GIS president. “The most rewarding part of my presidency wasn’t winning this award twice. It was seeing my fellow members’ self-confidence grow from last year to this year. That is what Gamma Iota Sigma is really about.”
Andrew Simms
The Risk Management and Insurance Center at Olivet College, which includes Gamma Iota Sigma, realizes strong corporate and donor support. Accident Fund, Amerisure, Farm Bureau, Frankenmuth Insurance, Hastings Mutual and State Farm are corporations that give annually in support of student achievement in insurance and risk management. 9

In Spring 2014, alumni travelled with students to Iceland during Olivet’s Intensive Learning Term. The trip was such a success that Mike Fales ’75, assistant professor of interdisciplinary studies and religion, will invite alumni to participate on future travel experiences.
