PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Friends, Since its adoption in 2012, the Olivet College community has been working diligently to make its Charting the Course to 2020 and Beyond strategic plan a reality, and the 2014-15 year hit several key waypoints on our course to success. The college experienced, yet again, another strong fiscal year. A challenging economic environment, declining numbers of college-age students across the country and particularly here in the Midwest, and continued lagging public funding for higher education have all created a highly competitive and challenging environment for colleges and universities. Despite these challenges, Olivet College continues to do well at managing its fiscal affairs, balancing budgets and investing in it strategic priorities. Continuously demonstrating sound fiscal management, building endowment and making ongoing capital investments are the keys to building the strong and thriving Olivet College of tomorrow. While a fiscally sound and strong organization are essential, we must also ensure that quality learning and development of students is at the forefront. This report highlights three key aspects of this effort. The faculty have looked earnestly at the learning expectations and outcomes of our academic programs and are making improvements necessary to ensure that high quality learning is occurring. While relationships remain at the center of the Olivet College academic environment, we’re also ensuring that learning is technologically infused and facilitated – that our students have the tools and skills to successfully leverage technology to facilitate effective learning and communication. Finally, we’re also working to develop strong, responsible leaders within our campus community – leaders who will be the difference makers in our communities of the future; our Student Government Association is a prime example of Olivet College’s strong and emerging leaders. I hope you enjoy reading about their efforts and accomplishments. Finally, let me offer a hearty “thank you” to the many individuals and organizations who have helped to make this all possible. Your support of education, programs and projects is making a real difference in the lives of students and in the future of this great college. With Best Regards and Gratitude,
Steven M. Corey, Ph.D. President

THESE RESOURCES DIRECTLY IMPACT ALL FACETS OF CAMPUS, INCLUDING ACADEMICS, ATHLETICS AND STUDENT LIFE: $750,000 – Dole Hall Welcome Center The Dole Hall Welcome Center serves as the college’s front door, welcoming all student prospects, alumni and friends to campus with newly renovated meeting rooms, offices and restrooms. The second phase of Welcome Center renovations was completed in December 2015. $600,000 – Pyne Pavilion Significantly improving the game day experience for Comet football, lacrosse and track and field fans, the brand new Pyne Pavilion includes a team store, concessions and president’s game-day suite. $600,000 – Gruen Engagement Center The one-time home of beloved chemistry professor Fred Gruen, Ph.D., will soon serve as a place where today’s students and faculty can collaborate in a social setting, while also serving as lodging and hospitality space for visitors such as professors-in-residence, campus speakers and special guests. $550,000 – Roznowski Learning Commons at Burrage Library Opened at the beginning of the fall 2015 semester, the state-of-the-art Roznowski Learning Commons merges the social and academic interests of students into a contemporary space that includes presentation, research and learning technologies. $300,000 – New Student Housing Planning and Design Olivet College currently has capacity for 657 residential students. As the college continues toward its enrollment goal of 1,800 students, it must plan for and design new housing that meets the needs of future student populations. Gillette Student Village Phase II, and up to an additional four new residence halls are included in this scope.
2014 / 2015
$250,000 – Academic Faculty Grant Program In order to enhance the teaching and learning experience at Olivet College while also providing a significant positive impact on students, President Corey and Maria Davis, Ph.D., provost and dean, solicited strategic investment grant proposals from faculty. All or a portion of this gift will be used to fund these proposals. $185,000 – Football Locker Room Renovations Enhancements were made to the football locker room facilities to support a larger, more competitive program. $150,000 – Instrumental Music Program Great bands are led by exceptional conductors. Jeremy Duby, director of bands, is a case in point. A portion of Director Duby’s salary, along with new music scholarships and other program enhancements, were supported through this donation and will contribute to enhancing the instrumental music program at Olivet College. $150,000 – New Student and Collegiate Center Design Considered the keystone project of the college’s comprehensive campaign, the Student and Collegiate Center will serve as a hub for all things “student life,” including an enhanced late-night dining experience, gaming and casual seating areas, a banquet-style event space, WOCR, The Echo, a spirit shop and the Office of Student Life. In addition, the new design will seamlessly connect this new facility to the Upton Recreation Center. Remaining Resources In addition to the initiatives outlined above and the kickoff of Responsible Learners – Responsible Leaders: Olivet College 2020 and Beyond, the college raised the resources needed to acquire property adjacent to campus and launch a number of new athletic teams.

Hannah Scott’s eyes light up a bit when she talks about the parts of Olivet College’s history that most interest her. As a writing intern in the Olivet College Archives, she has the privilege of digging through, cataloging and reporting on some of the college’s oldest and most precious photographs, publications and files. “From a writing perspective,” she says, “I’ve come across some beautiful speeches and opeds – moments that have literally made me stop what I’m doing and transcribe it all because I get so excited about it.” Hannah graduated in December 2015 as an already-published writer. Her long-form article, “The Search for Olivet College’s first African-American and Female Graduates,” was featured in the Historical Society of Michigan (HSM) Chronicle during the summer, and she has already been asked by the society to take on additional freelance projects. “Six months ago, I would have said that I want to work in a communications office, either in the private sector or for the state,” she said. “But as a result of the archival work and having my article come out, I would say I want to work anywhere that involves a lot of writing and editing. I just want to be writing no matter what I do.” To read all of Hannah’s story, visit www.olivetcollege.edu.

OLIVET COLLEGE MISSION The mission of Olivet College is to make available to a diverse campus community, an education which will enrich lives intellectually, morally and spiritually. Having gained these qualities through the educational experiences at Olivet, our hope is that our graduates will embody the divine art and science of doing good to others as stated by the founding fathers of Olivet College in 1844.

2014 / 2015
Olivet College is dedicated today, as it was in 1844, to the principle that the future of humanity rests in the hands, hearts, and minds of those who will accept responsibility for themselves and others in an increasingly diverse society. This principle of individual and social responsibility is realized in the context of a distinctive liberal arts experience which nurtures in our students the emergence and development of skills, perspectives, and ethics necessary to better themselves and society. We seek to involve our students in an active academic community which cherishes diversity of thought and expression. In so doing, we will help our students discover ways they can most effectively contribute to the common good.
PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT
WHAT’S TO COME
Dear Friends, Olivet College is a place where ideas come to life in the minds of young adults – ideas that aid their understanding of the responsibility they have to themselves and the broader society.
I personally thank everyone who has made a gift to help us educate our
students and launch them into a world that needs them more today than ever. Your gifts have helped achieve many goals during the past year and your support in the current year will help us achieve the following goals:
“People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it. And what you do simply proves what you believe.” Simon Sinek
• Designing the expansion for the Cutler Event Center
• Finalizing the renovation plans for Mott Academic Center and Upton Conservatory of Music
• The completion of the Dole Hall Welcome Center
• Launching the Faculty Grant Initiative Program
• Renovation of all of the residence hall bathrooms
• Ground breaking for the Gruen Engagement Center
• Building the New Kappa Sigma Alpha House
• Starting new and growing current athletic programs, including men’s bowling, and men’s and women’s track

THE WELL CONNECTED STUDENT
HOW DOES A COLLEGE STUDENT RATE THE IMPORTANCE OF TECHNOLOGY? Right there with breathing, eating and sleeping.
With mobile devices becoming less of
a luxury and more of an extension of the self, access to unlimited wireless and digital capabilities is more crucial than ever.
Olivet College is preparing students for a
rapidly changing, technologically-enabled global economy and society by first addressing the need to provide access to technology everywhere on campus, at all times.
In 2014-15, Information Technology
Services (ITS) worked tirelessly to advance resources and support for Olivet College students, faculty and staff. Wireless users can now immediately connect to a seamless, highspeed network extending to every residence hall, computer lab, faculty office and classroom without interruption. So when a high school student wants to Instagram his first visit to Olivet College, or a Gamma Iota Sigma member wants to Tweet about meeting a leading insurance executive in seminar, he or she can do so with ease.
In addition to a ubiquitous wireless network,
students now have access to state-of-the-art resources, such as large digital screens and conferencing capabilities in the Roznowski Learning Commons, that allow small study groups to collaborate effortlessly. ITS is also now permanently housed in the learning commons,
“I really like the large digital screens and conference rooms available in the Roznowski Learning Commons,” said freshman Zoe Feighner (center). “As a student it’s important to have access to these resources, because in the real work environment, they will be necessary for meetings and presentations. I also like the commons’ close proximity to ITS, because if you have a tech problem, they are right there to help you.”
providing students a convenient location for tech support when needed.

FROM GOOD TO GREAT: THE MAKING OF AN ALL-AMERICAN
What makes a good student-athlete great? For Ryan
Armstrong ’15, President’s Leadership Institute Fellow and former defensive lineman for the Comet football program, it was the personal attention from faculty and coaches that helped him reach the next level.
Armstrong wasn’t the biggest football player. He wasn’t
the smartest student. Just ask him yourself – he’d tell you the same thing. But what made him different from other players – from other students – was his desire to get better in every facet of life.
Through painful 6 a.m. workouts to challenging criminal
justice classes, Armstrong became a student-athlete who embodied an entire school’s ideals. He took responsibility for his own learning and personal development, no matter how difficult it would be. Through hard work, and careful guidance from his professors and coaches, he became the best.
“It wasn’t easy for Ryan,” said Warren Maloney, defensive
coordinator for the Comets. “But he stuck it out, worked hard and good things happened for him. He bought in, not just on the field, but in the classroom. He became a better student and athlete. That is why he had such a standout season during his senior year. ”
During the 2014-15 season, Armstrong compiled 61
tackles and 10 sacks in 10 games for the Comets. For his efforts, he was named to the 2014 American Football Coaches Association Division III All-America Team. He is the first player in school history to earn this honor. Armstrong was also selected as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s Defensive Player of the Year, and to the D3football.com AllAmerica third team and All-North Region first team.
