THANKS ANNUAL REPORT
2016
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Looking back. Looking ahead. Perhaps, like me, you take these natural actions when the calendar turns. The 2016 Annual Report assists you in both regarding your partnership with Olivet Nazarene University. We thank God and extend our sincere gratitude to you for the blessing of our look at 2016! A nourishing spiritual environment, rigorous academic programs and vibrant community life paint the picture of a transformational experience for students. And, together, we move forward in faith! While Olivet has more than 110 years of history, we cannot — must not — rest comfortably. The future world-changers we are privileged to serve deserve cuttingedge vision to equip them.
2
Our commitment expressed in the 1915 Olivet Nazarene University catalog remains intact: “We seek the strongest scholarship and the deepest piety, knowing that they are thoroughly compatible; and a Christian environment where not only knowledge but character is sought.” Rest assured that all of us — administration, faculty, staff and board members — cherish and protect your stewardship. Thank you! For the students,
John C. Bowling University President

IMPACT OFYOUR GIFT: ONE STUDENT’S STORY In college, it’s hard to grow in your beliefs and grow into yourself if you’re not working on your spiritual self as well as your intellectual self. Because of your assistance, my peers and I can expand our knowledge without sacrificing our beliefs. We wouldn’t have that opportunity without your gifts. 6
Olivet freshman Ashley O’Connell appreciates opportunity more than most 19-year-olds. Before she reached her teens, she survived cancer and a parent’s death. Today, she’s grateful to be healthy and attending a university that fosters the spiritual and intellectual growth that’s so important to her. “For a while, I was really confused and didn’t know what I wanted for my future,” Ashley recalls. “In 2006, when I was nine, my dad died in a motorcycle accident. Three years later, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a cancer that attacks the lymphatic system.” “I had surgery to remove a lymph node, then I had chemotherapy,” Ashley explains in a simplified summary of her harrowing journey. She now considers those eight months of

chemotherapy a blessing. “Even if it wasn’t what I wanted, I learned a lot from it. You come to recognize faces after so long. You get to learn about the people next to you – the other patients. It was a special experience.” So special that Ashley came to Olivet to begin studying medicine, aiming to learn how to help others with serious health challenges. “I thought I wanted to major in business, mostly because my mom was hoping I would,” Ashley says. “But I had no career aspirations in business, and I really felt led into nursing. One reason I wanted to be at Olivet was because the nursing program is so prestigious. I just feel that’s where I need to be.” On campus, Ashley lives on Parrott 2, among a number of nursing majors who inspire her. She now has this vision for her future:
“After I graduate, I’m hoping to work as a nurse for a while, find a specialty I enjoy and then go farther in that field — maybe oncology, because my experience could help me treat others. Eventually, I want to be a nurse practitioner or a doctor.” Ashley recalls that she didn’t even consider Olivet until she visited campus as a high school senior. She says: “It was like I was meant to be here. It was awesome. What drew me in initially was the beautiful campus. But it was the Christian culture and the community and Olivet’s reputation that really made me want to pursue an education here. “But I definitely would not be able to attend Olivet without the scholarships and needbased grants I receive. In fact, I have relatives who wanted to go to school here, but they couldn’t because it was too expensive. That makes my experience that much more rewarding. It isn’t just for me, it’s an accomplishment for my family, too. “Olivet sets the standard for an environment that fosters education, spirituality and well-being. It’s a place where you work your hardest and you dedicate yourself more. Honestly, it is amazing. I couldn’t ask for a better college experience. “I think all of the students are equally appreciative. Our education is too important to be settling for something less.”

aspirations and, of course, finances influence each prayer and dream. However, your generosity is the common denominator. Your Friends of Olivet Annual Giving participation bridges the tuition gap — the actual cost of Christian higher education and a student’s ability to pay. Thank you for finding your place in a student’s journey!
FAITHFUL FRIENDS SHARE WHY THEY GIVE BACK:
Our love for Olivet was fostered by spiritual “growth, the lifetime friends we made, and godly professors that gave us personal attention. ONU gave us a foundation for building a career and raising our family with a faith grounded in Christian principles.

JOY OF GIVING: ONE DONOR’S STORY My wife and I have had a number of situations in our lives when we depended on the care of nurses. We might not even be alive if it weren’t for nurses. What better remembrance could we create than to support the education and training of people who want to care for others? 12
Virgil Sancken’s faith has played a recurring role in the 89-year story of his life.
He believes that faith means different things at different times. In 1963, Virgil was a 36-year-old married father of two who had just earned his high school diploma via correspondence school, a predecessor to online education. He was job hunting and wrestling with whether to start working on a college degree. His wife, Irma Jean, was a teacher in a rural community in central Illinois. One day, a chance meeting on the way to a job interview led Virgil to Olivet and changed the course of the Sanckens’ future. “It was a cold, snowy day, and I stopped in a café to warm up,” Virgil recalls. “There were just a few customers, and I struck up a conversation with

one of them about what each of us was doing in the area that day. Turns out he was a pastor from Mokena, Illinois. When he heard I was thinking about college, he offered to help me enroll at Olivet, if that’s truly what I wanted to do. His wife had graduated from Olivet.” Virgil enrolled and earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology. Over time, when they could afford it, the Sanckens began making gifts to various charities. When Alma Mater Olivet came calling, faith again took center stage in the Sanckens’ story. “It had to do with hope and planning and goals,” Virgil explains. “In that period in the 1960s, I fulfilled my requirements as a student. But I didn’t realize all of the things that education would bring about. And they’re still
unfolding. The relationship I have with Olivet today sprung up in an unexpected way. It’s really the sum and substance of our dream and purpose.” The Sanckens are building an endowed scholarship for Olivet nursing students. Theirs is a testamentary gift, which will provide the majority of funding upon execution of their wills. Meanwhile, “despise not the day of small things,” says Virgil, quoting William Penn’s paraphrase of scripture. “We do what we feel we can do now.” The couple resides in a senior life community. Irma Jean, 90, lives in the community’s rehabilitation housing. Over their years together — raising a family, committing to education, changing jobs, surviving a serious car accident and other health challenges — the Sanckens drew strength from each other, their faith, and their family, friends and caregivers. “Every day, we see nurses living on the fast track with technology advancements and the need for ongoing training and development,” Virgil says. “If we are able to provide any means to substantially support something, this is where we want it to go. We know the money won’t get lost in a monument or a statue that might get buried in 50 years. Instead, it improves people’s lives.”

“ Higher education should have a higher purpose. It’s a calling we take seriously. These are great days, indeed, but I firmly believe Olivet’s best days are to come.”
