The Fair Trade certification model is designed and audited to ensure equitable trade practices at every level of the supply chain. Companies must amend its articles of incorporation to adopt B Lab’s commitment to sustainability and treating workers well. THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND
RECLAIM 23
C H I N A
China is a key player in deciding where to source our products from. They are the most well versed country in terms of exporting apparel and have a multitude of factories to choose from for our knitwear pieces. Although we have found factories that have implemented sustainable practices, the country is ranked 109th of 180 countries in the 2016 Environmental index. Their Labor Laws include many rights and precautions we look for when doing business such as the ability for workers to form unions, equal pay, take appropriate leave and many more. Although the Chinese have prioritized improvement in technology related to energy efficiency and clean energy, poor co-ordination and patchy implementation could hinder development in these areas. China has continuously been a world leader in technology and innovations with electronics and machinery being their largest export category. China currently has no free trade agreements with the United States and none are in the works. The TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) is currently in the works but the trade agreement excludes China and will most likely work against them when creating a new trade powerhouse. There is no national minimum wage in China but each province in china delegates there own minimum wage. The lowest minimum wage is 11 yuan = $1.61 per hour. The highest minimum wage is 18.70 yuan = $2.90 per hour. Manufacturing in China cost significantly less due to the high saturation of manufacturers and the huge, highly-skilled labor force.

RECLAIM 24
When researching, Thailand was an obvious souring option based upon the information found. Thailand takes pride in the treatment and appreciation of their workers and the quality of the pieces that are made in the country. Although the exertion of pollutants is much lower than China, sustainability often takes the backseat to economic growth in Thailand. The only plan being implemented is the Enhancement and Conservation of National Environment Quality, which ends this year. The labor laws in Thailand are taken quite seriously and implemented across all industries. From their social security act to the wages and working hour requirements, there is a great deal of crossover between their requirements and our code of conduct. Thailand has actively promoted science and technology to encourage innovation. The National Science and Technology and Innovation Policy and Plan 2012–21 aims to increase R&D investment from the current level to 1% of GDP in 2016 and to 2% of GDP by 2021. However, the country continues to perform poorly in protecting intellectual property rights (IPR). The United States and Thailand launched Free Trade Agreement negotiations in 2004 but suspended them in 2006 following the dissolution of the Thai Parliament and the subsequent military-led coup. Currently Thailand has 14 signed and in effect free trade agreements and 8 agreements in the process . Altogether totaling to 22 free trade agreements. For Thailand, higher manufacturing costs have hindered the nation’s ability to compete with its neighbors on price. The minimum wage in Thailand is 300 Baht (US $9), which is determined by the cost of living in a particular area. Although it is a higher cost of production within this country, the ethics and quality are more in line with what we are looking to achieve.

V I E T N A M
Vietnam is a company that often competes for business in the apparel industry. Unfortunately it has been ranked by the 2016 Environmental Performance Index (EPI), 131 out of 180 countries which is a very low performance ranking. There is a long way to go for Vietnam to move up in the rankings, the need for implementations is high. As of 2015, the new $4.13 million project called Strengthening Capacity and Institutional Reform for Green Growth and Sustainable Development (CIGG) has been launched in Vietnam. In regards to their laws on labor, they have many that we at Reclaim applaud. Important issues such as paid overtime, paid leave, and healthcare are acknowledged. There could be more achievements seen in the apparel sector of technology in Vietnam; The Vietnam Textile & Apparel Association (VITAS) has reported that the rate of locally-made products stands at 55%, due to the weak weaving and dyeing capabilities. It is said that weaving and dyeing projects fail to receive licenses due to their high risk of environmental pollution. A major import partner to the US, the two countries held a multitude of discussions in 2011 under the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement. The TIFA provided a forum to help monitor and implement Vietnam’s WTO commitments, address bilateral trade issues, while also promoting increased trade and investment. The fiber industry has been promoting the competitive advantage of lower input costs, in particular, labor costs and land lease fees in comparison to other countries. The second reason is because of the rapid increasing needs of world market in recent years. Overall we believe that Vietnam is a great alternative country if a backup plan is needed.

OUR GOALS
Dongguan Quality Knitwear The Dongguan Quality Knitwear factory in China was chosen as a potential supplier based on their strict quality and sustainability practices. As a Fair Labor AssociationÂŽ Participating Supplier, they have high standards for social compliance and labor standards. The factory aims to minimize waste and reduce their environmental footprint while creating the highest quality products. One of their largest consumers is Patagonia, who looks to Dongguan Quality Knitwear to produce their reclaimed wool sweaters. Because they produce a very similar product to ours at Reclaim and uphold our environmental standards, we feel as though Dongguan has the potential to be a great fit for producing our sweaters.
Nan Yang Textile Group
Nobland Vietnam Company The Nobland Vietnam Company Factory in Vietnam was specifically researched and picked due to its craft and variety of techniques that they apply to their knitted apparel based on each customer order. With customers such as Everlane and Levi’s who showcase this factories transparency on their website, we at Reclaim were able to understand how this factory is well versed in different styles and specialty knits. As well as having the craft and skill we are looking for, this factory also uses vertical mills and a internal fabric library showing a multitude of developed resources at their fingertips.
RECLAIM 27
At the Nan Yang Textile Group caring for the environment is one of their main management principles. They use environmental friendly measures to ensure that the materials used as well as the entire production processes, pose no threat to the immediate environment or to the nearby communities. Along with adhering to global standards, the Nan Yang Textile Group ensures quality and safety to their people. This emphasis on safety and quality results to excellent product quality and services and higher customer satisfaction. The company also integrated businesses from garment manufacturing to knitting dyeing, and finishing, printing and spinning. The use of Eco friendly yarns and fabrics embraces the trend towards a more sustainable fashion with functions. Some of these fibers include organic cotton, bamboo fiber, recycled polyester, and soybean protein fiber.
STRATEGY PUBLICATION The selection of our three country opinions has overall stemmed from the capable factories that they harbor, as well as their pre-established ranking within the apparel making industry. After analyzing the countries chosen, it was easier to navigate to what our final choice would be by following our own sourcing guidelines. The manufacturing of apparel within these three countries is bountiful, along with this multitude comes

skilled work forces, technologies and knowledge of textiles. These qualities are most important to Reclaim because without this knowledge within countries our product would not be to the best standard. Looking at the top suppliers for our product assortment at Reclaim, we then made a decision to best fit our code of conduct. It was important for our company to choose not only a country that fit our standards but as well as the factory within that country who can abide by our code of conduct while maintaining a realistic and profitable price for our order.
STRATEGY CONCLUSION With our knowledge and research on each option we believe that although Thailand does have some of the higher costing practices, it is for good reason and that being they work in an environment we can stand by and support as well as making truly quality pieces with a multitude of technology and craft. The Nan Yang Textile Group is best suited to create pieces for Reclaim because of a multitude of reasons. They focus on the environment as being top of their priorities as when choosing this group was because their use of a multitude of materials that have functional sustainable fashion in mind, which at Reclaim is key to having a successful product.
