The City Talking

Brief 8

For this brief I had to create some work for the newspaper, The City Talking. I had to produce work that promoted the Leeds Culture Strategy and its bid for the 2023 Europe Culture Capital and also the development of the Southbank including the new high speed railway. This brief was highly conceptual in the first stages so it was very difficult to understand. After reconvening with the other artists working on this brief (TONE and Tom Joy) we understood what the client was after more. This has been a really enjoyable brief. Creating work that actually goes into print and becomes a physical piece of applied illustration always makes me happy.

Despite the initial struggle to interpret the brief, it has largely been easy. I did have a little struggle on getting the colour scheme right. I toyed with many palettes until settling on this one. I ended up settling on this one as I knew that if I used a more dull or dark palette, that when printed the work would just lose itself into the background of the paper. The colours that I used came out well, the dark red that I used came out quite darker in print so i am glad that I settled on this mostly bright palette. Something else that found difficult on this brief was that I knew the City Talking had chosen me on the basis of a piece of work that I did over a year ago and since then my practice has changed a fair amount. I had to make the decision to create work that was in my current way of working rather than what they expected me to produce. I knew that if I created the latter, then if anyone follows me up for more illustrations after seeing my work in the paper, I would be creating more work that just 驶isn't me始. Overall this brief was a fantastic opportunity that came at the right time!
