f.2018_Andrew Madl landscape architecture studio in collaboration with Cullen Sayegh [ STRATA ] investigates and critiques the infrastructures in place to collect, store and distribute water in Central Florida. Due to rising sea levels, Pine castle bombing range and its peripheral site must prepare for massive influx of people from low-lying coastal regions across the state.
As sea levels continue to rise, the aquifers become thinner and endanger the water moving through them - becoming susceptible to contamination and collision. In this proposal, a constellation pattern of desalination pods will engage with the landscape in a choreographic system of extraction and distribution.

PHASES of OPERATIONS Pine castle Bombing Range, one of the last military training bases to practice live bombing, will be the first territory of focus to implement and maintain the desalination pods. Using controlled burning, the areas of intervention will be cleared for the pod volumes. Live bombing will secure the location of the pods and unearth the top surface of the Floridian aquifer. The pod structure will activate the exposed perimeter. Once these pools begin to fill, the desalination pods will separate the aquifer’s water from its contaminants. This network of pods will grow as the water resources become increasingly scarce and unsafe in the overwhelmed climate-refuge cities of central Florida.

SYNTHETIC IMPRINTS This series of landscape manipulations and footprints are concentrated in the Ocala region of Central Florida, the peripheral territory of study. The location of the desalination pods are determined by cross examining the highest elevation points, ideal soil porosity, proximity to water bodies, and low tree coverage. These fabrications are constructed to study the overlapping boundaries from the territories, man-made intrusions, and the consequences of rerouting water arteries.

TERRITORY This proposal focuses on the temporal qualities of the quarry - acknowledging that social borders, political boundaries, and environmental conditions will shift and adjust over time. The strategies of mapping identify the overlapping networks and infrastructures that occupy the territory of the Urban Wilderness. Each piece of intervention touches the earth lightly, applying pressure to the existing zones of disengaged or disoriented program. As the natural and social boundaries begin to shift, the tectonic interventions will adjust in correspondence.

remain embedded in the rubbles, informing the program, inhabitation, and fiction of the ruins.
ECONOMY of RUBBLE The first phase enables the preservationist mindset. The values of protecting space, memory and program is dependent on the individual territory. To preserve an architecture is to translate it’s essence - a visual transference. As the site, imprinted by memory, falls into decay, the rubbles are removed and replaced by screens and smoke. The second phase salvages the rubbles fallen from each site. The individual satellite will have a unique fingerprint of tactile and sub-natural qualities.

ANTICIPATION of WEATHERING To better understand the relationship between actor and surface, a selection of vernacular materials were chosen from the Appalachian city. The physical vulnerabilities of each material, induced through age and weathering, are mapped in constructs of suspended terrains. The volumetric formations of these vulnerabilities develop a world of hyper objects that anticipate

and animate the city of ruin.
OWNERSHIP Once the exchange of rubbles begins, the riddle of ownership resurfaces. The introduction of a tactile palimpsest to this Appalachian city redirects spatial ownership away from humans and proprietors. Instead, the exchange will be authored by assembled materials and residual memories. Unfortunately, this intervention will not entirely protect the authenticity of the ruins. We know better. We anticipate that this network, too, will fall into decay one day. As the seasons continue, the palimpsest grows stronger.
