TREND REPORT 2021

FORCAST 2021 IN COLOUR This years colour of the year, inspired by the likes of Dulux and Pantone, solidifies the feeling that there is more to colour than just the paint of your walls. Colours tell a story and this year follows a theme of strength and serenity, with natural earth tones taking the spotlight. Expect to see pops of pastels to complement the neutrals, as well as experimental green tones and rich inky blues. We sat down with the wonderful Emma Brindley, Head of Product and Design at Olivia’s, to discuss all things colour for 2021, and here are the colours we know will be everywhere in interior design for 2021.
‘DULUX’ COLOUR OF THE YEAR ‘BRAVE GROUND’ SETS THE TONE FOR THIS YEARS BIG COLOUR TREND Brave Ground is a rich colour that tells a story, it symbolises strength and triumph in the face of adversity. For 2021, warm, earthy, neutral shades will be the core foundation colours seen throughout most trends. We see a great connection to nature and a need to bring the outside in which, drives this defining colour trend.

GET BOLD WITH COLOUR Although a shade of grey was selected by Pantone as one of the two colours of the year, it won’t be taking central stage in 2021. Along with rich neutrals and creamy basics, a key trend for 2021 is a beautiful dark, navy blue. You may see grey tones on the high street, but to get that high-end superior look, opt for sultry blue tones. This year we are seeing more experimental designs, using different shades of greens, from velvety forest dark greens to light and uplifting olives and sage tones. Even with the warm neutrals being the leading palette, making your space more joyful and exciting to look at seems to be the way forward.

INTRODUCING BOLDER COLOURS
PRETTY IN PINK We are so happy to see dusky pinks on the scene this year, not necessarily as a primary palette but to compliment the earthy toned walls and furniture. We love the shade of dusky pink for injecting some warmth into the home. This playful tone works well with rose gold and brass furniture to increase the texture in the design.

HINTS OF YELLOW With one half of Pantone’s colour of the year being a fresh ‘illuminating’ yellow, we will expect to see this bright choice integrated into interiors and design this year. We will also see hues of pastel yellow as well as classic mustards. While not being a foundation colour, this trend will focus more on adding subtle pops of yellow paired with other shades, such as splashes of yellow in a print or yellow accessories. We love to see brighter colours coming through this year, creating light and excitement in the home.

HINTS OF YELLOW The final colour trend we are seeing are hints of yellow coming through, from “Pantone. But what I’m seeing is more of a mixture of bright yellows and mustards, maybe like a pop of colour on a cushion or a feature armchair. You don’t have to be afraid of colour, introduce it quietly into the home and you will become addicted to the happiness it creates! – Emma Brindley

TRENDS
This years design trends centre around feeling comfortable in our homes and making functional spaces. With a chaotic year behind us, the focus is to create enjoyment with cosy fabrics and nature inspired textures. With some of last years trends staying put, there is a good mix of familiarity and new beginnings. We are excited to see this years trends unfold with new inspiration to look forward to.
A GENTLE NOD TO TIMES GONE BY A trend on the horizon is one that uses a mixture of old traditional styles in the home with various fabrics to give a cosy, country like setting. This rustic trend warms to the idea of being surrounded by things we love, having a feeling of sentimentality in the home. Ditsy, gingham materials with weathered wood furniture and the smell of bread cooking in the air, this trend is set to be a staple aesthetic for 2021.

RUSTIC RECYCLED MATERIALS A focus trend for 2021 includes rustic recycled materials such as weathered woods. Create this style by repurposing old furniture and using recycled materials. In 2020 we saw lots of similar projects, while people spend their time indoors creating purposeful projects to improve their home. CANE AND RATTAN FURNITURE Rattan furniture was very popular last spring /summer and is staying relevant this year too, it complements the theme of natural, earthy tones and materials. Rattan is mostly seen on furniture like chairs, wardrobes and sideboards, giving a French country house feel. It is a simply elegant material that has a special feel to it, with a close connection to nature. As a big part of the design forecast for 2021, expect to see it on smaller items like light fittings and table décor.

CREATING ROOMS OUTSIDE
GOOD QUALITY HOME WORKING We know all too well how working from home can be a challenge, not everyone has a space to dedicate as just an office so we have to make do with little corners around the house. Some people opt for the kitchen table, or maybe an arm of the sofa this can become inconvenient over time but there are ways to make a space your own.

Good quality home working is now essential, so we are seeing the great “transformations of the smallest of spaces, in order to work from home. You may
not have room for a study, so we are seeing lots of mini conversions from part of the kitchen to a dining room office area. This years trend is making it more of a functional long term space, adding feature chairs, plants, accessories and rugs to decorate. – Emma Brindley
