01 design village “sleeper shell”

This was easily the most challenging project I have ever endured, physically, creatively and emotionally. I’m extremely proud of my group and the design we managed to create and haul. the design itself was inspired by poly’s proximity to the ocean, so the shape itself was based on the protective enclosures of crustaceans. The shape evolved over time to only support a few members of the team, but it ended up a cozy, yet very social, structure.

02 precedence “think tank

designed by philip gumuchdjian for politician david puttnam, this boathouse in the irish countryside is steeped in culture. this project instilled in me the strength of a proper design process. gumuchdjian called upon the colloquial architecture of the surrounding land, but also brought his modern spin with luxurious materiality, creating a strikingly beautiful minimalist household. though there was challenge in trying to capture the beauty of this home with digital media, i feel i have become a better designer, thinker, and architect because of it.

13

context & site

Located in the countryside of Skibbereen, Ireland, the boathouse rests on the banks of the River Ilen. The space is infl uenced by the pastoral beauty of the surrounding farmlands, tidal fl ow of the river and quaint beauty of the bustling town.

analysis

Though on the surface ‘T hink Tank’ appears simple,if even minimalist, the complex layers provide a sense of modern luxury. Predominantly comprised of open, mixeduse space,a majority of the circulation is intended to occur outside of the walls, transcending the indoor-outdoor barrier.

03 motion studio “aggregate

designing a motion studio for a largely conceptual college is difficult, to say the least. the motion of human interaction, and therefore i chose articulation of human speech to guide my design process. on the subject of design process, this is where i most improved and learned with this project. an architect cannot begin designing without information from the site, and the analysis i learned from previous projects allowed me to become a better designer for this one.

located adjacent to the business building and the rotunda, a place where many prominent lecturers come to speak,as well as the beautiful o’neill green, i was inspired by the space to create a social extension of the informative rotunda. My design is a three part space that allows for intimate workshops, lively networking gatherings and areas of respite, all under one roof.

motion study

the true motion of business is negotiation: the art of oratory. to inspire the form of my structure, ianalyzed mri’s of emotional speech and used the caverns of the mouth, as well as movement of the tongue, to inform the shape of my building.

04 refl ection “year one”

this has been the hardest, best, most educational and most fun year of my life. i’ve cried over projects more times than i care to admit, and pulled more all nighters more than i thought any human could and still function. i have learned a lot about myself and the type of people i surround myself with, as well as which types of beauty i am trying to develop into my style. my process of growth will continue for sure, and here is to hoping i can continue my next four years with as much passion and happiness as i maintained in this one.
