anchester, city of the North, renowned for its culture, music and love of football. Manchester has been a city on the scene
for decades, with The Hacienda nightclub having been the place to be in the late eighties and nighties with performers like the likes of Madonna making appearances. To the two infamous English football stadiums; Old Trafford home of the reds and, now renamed, The Etihad home of the blues, the city in full divide on derby day brings so much life and atmosphere. On one side, you have Deansgate and Spinningfields, the upper-side of Manchester some would say. Home to Flannels designer store, upmarket restaurants

This side of Manchester screams glitz and glamour. With Kings Street just a mere five minute walk from Deansgate, you stumble upon the likes of DKNY, Rio Ferdinand’s restaurant Rosso’s and the infamous Gotham Manchester hotel. On the other side of the city you have The Arndale centre, opposite to Selfridges department store and opposite that Harvey Nichols department store, talk about a city with style. Shopping in Manchester is iconic to the city’s visitors with people coming from outer cities to experience the hundreds of clothing stores and the variety in which Manchester has to offer. A five minute walk and you are at the M.E.N arena, (Manchester Evening News), with concerts and live performances being held weekly it is never a quiet night.

he Northern Quarter
All that and more in just one city, Manchester is home to so many ‘mini cities’, such as the Northern Quarter. It is spoken about as the more hipster part of Manchester, Manchester’s ‘alternative and creative heart’, having hundreds of independent coffee shops, vintage stores and urban bars, it is the talk of the town. It is known that Manchester is the home to two leading universities; The University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan with

the result of the city being infested with students! o, why the Northern Quarter? It is so diverse with residents of Manchester, to students from around the country to tourists from across the
globe, it seems to attract anybody that’s anybody! When questioning people on their favourite spots in Manchester, it is surprising to hear how many do suggest and recommend somewhere in the Northern Quarter because there is something there for everyone. In an article from the New York Times, they experience Manchester in 36 hours (personally not enough time for the amazing city) and the Northern Quarter comes up, three separate locations to be exact!

Talking about three popular places; North Tea Power being the first stop, this is a quiet little independent coffee and brunch shop that is found just around the corner from the next stop which is the infamous Afflecks Palace. Found on the corner of Church Street, this four-story building was founded in 1981 with everything from a barber to a tattoo parlour to the most recent crazed cereal bar ‘Black Milk Cereal’. It is a widely known place from students to older generations, the palace has been a place of free expression for over nearly four decades and is open to everyone and anyone.

he final destination of this trip around the Norther Quarter was Home Sweet Home, a
name in itself and a restaurant not for the faint hearted. Whether it’s one of their signature slices of cake or their loaded nachos, the portions are big but the staff’s welcome is even bigger and better. Having visited this ‘mini city’, from first hand experience it is different to any other place in the city but also any other that I have had the opportunity to visit which makes it that much more inviting!

Q
& A with Eve Shaw
In this exclusive interview we decided to sit down with a nineteen-year-old student from Manchester, choosing a younger generation we thought we would get an idea about what being a student in Manchester is like. Not only this but having lived in Manchester almost her entire life we knew we would get first hand experience about what a typical day in the city of Manchester is really like and where those hidden student hangouts that we have been dying to find really are!
11
Q: “So can you tell our readers your name and what university you’re at?” A: “Ha! I am Eve Shaw and I go to the University of Leeds.” Q: “And how long have you lived in Manchester for?” A: “Are we counting Wilmslow as Manchester?” Q: “Yes we are it is the outskirts.” A: “Ok, well my whole life then, so 19 years.” Q: “So tell me a typical day if you were to go to Manchester, where would you go? What would you do?” A: “If I were going shopping probably the Arnedale and Market street as they are the easiest to go to. I never really go to the Trafford Centre.” Q: “Why no to the Trafford Centre?” A: “it is not very accessible unlike Manchester, it is a train ride away from Wilmslow but the Trafford Centre would be a car journey.” Q: “That is true sometimes a nightmare with traffic, so where else would you visit in Manchester?” A: “Well if I was going out for food or somewhere like that I would probably go somewhere in the Northern Quarter, that’s got a lot of really nice bars and restaurants.” Q: “Ok, that is where I was getting to, you have been and visited the Norther Quarter. So where are the places that you would probably go to?”
12
A: “Ok well Afflecks is really good shopping wise, but bars and things, restaurants like Home Sweet Home are really nice. I can’t remember a few of the names but there is a Mexican in town?” Q: “Las Iguanas, the chain?” A: “yes there is literally loads, Las Iguanas and Turtle Bay is good but then like the little independent ones as well. There is one called Evelyn right opposite Afflecks Palace and so many others I just can’t remember they’re all over the Northern Quarter.” Q: “What about bars? Where is your favourite nightlife spot? A: “Well then you’ve got Twenty Twenty Two’s, a cool ping pong bar, and Mint Lounge and all that to go out to at night.” Q: “So would you say you go to the Northern Quarter often?” A: “Yes.” Q: “Is that your go to if you were going to Manchester?” A: “Yes most likely.” Q: “Why do you choose to go to the Northern Quarter instead of the other places in Manchester like Spinningfields or Deansgate?” A: “Because, being a student, Spinningfields and Deansgate are just so expensive! Well Spinningfields is definitely, and Deansgate is just a bit, a bit too higher class, quite snobby for my liking.” Q: “Yes I get where you are coming from.”
13
A: “Whereas the Northern Quarter is just a lot more down to earth, a bit cool. It’s got a lot more independence, like it does have a few chains but not as many as Spinningfields or Deansgate if you get what I mean.” Q: “Yes so you would say the style and the vibe of the Northern Quarter is a lot more chilled?” A: Yes completely.” Q: “So for people who have not visited Manchester, would you recommend them to visit?” A: “Absolutely.” Q: “Particularly would you recommend the Northern Quarter?” A: “Yes I would definitely, definitely send them to the Northern Quarter! If I were telling somewhere to go, and if I were telling someone to visit Manchester.” Just as we thought, after speaking to Eve it is officially true that the Northern quarter is where it is all happening these days. It has got everything from chain restaurants to the independent and more chilled restaurants that are unique to the Northern Quarter. To Afflecks Palace that has everything from a barber to a tattoo parlour to around twenty individual shops! And don’t even get us started on the nightlife, a ping pong bar? It definitely sounds like Manchester is the place to be and we think with it’s history and culture rolled into an all new experience for the younger generation and the older, who wouldn’t want to visit this incredible city?!

I
t is interesting to hear the different sides of the different generations of Mancunians and those
who have visited the city. Speaking to a 45-year-old woman from Newcastle, who used to hop on the bus every weekend just to visit The Haçienda with her friends in the 1990s, she said she loved visiting the city because, unlike Newcastle, it had so much musical culture which is world renowned. From The Smiths to Oasis to The 1975 the musicians have been pouring out of Manchester for decades, but they aren’t the only artists that this city has produced. In an online article by Confidential they listed the names of the newly recent on the scenes and the ones we need to
