Welcome to today’s performance of The 39 Steps!
From a book to the big screen to Broadway, this piece has proven itself as a work that will not be confined to one medium nor the constraints of typical storytelling. When The 39 Steps first opened in New York, many people (including the actors) thought the show wouldn’t last but a few weeks. It didn’t feature the massive sets, large production numbers or headline stars that have become the draw of current Broadway shows. This show deviated from the large scale gloss and glamour of the “new” Broadway and capitalized on the simpler magic of the old Vaudeville shows - theatre that survives on greasepaint and hammy actors. To the surprise and delight of everyone involved, it was a hit! After the success of last year’s Farragut North, Associate Artistic Director Clay Hopper takes you on a non-stop thrill ride as the four actors create more than 150 characters with expert precision in the course of one evening — a Hitchcockian feat for the modern stage! Just as this story has seen great transformation and success, Olney Theatre Center welcomes you to join us on our journey as we prepare for our 75th Anniversary Season. “The veneer of civilization is very thin, easily exposing the horrors beneath and…evil comes in very attractive forms, making it all the harder to resist.” -Deborah Buchan, granddaughter of John Buchan, author In the stage adaptation of The 39 Steps, we see this selfsame world as in the original “thriller” novel: a man on the run from wrongful accusations of murder, charming spies lurking in the Scottish countryside, and suspense around every corner. However, playwright Patrick Barlow executes the world of the “thriller” genre in a completely opposite direction of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 film adaptation. He creates through farce. While doing complete artistic justice to both Buchan’s original work and Hitchcock’s film, Barlow’s farcical take on the material provides us with a true homage to the theater. Not the contemporary theatre of spectacle we see today with massive moving sets and superheroes flying above the audience on wires. He pays tribute to our sentimental vision of the theater by creating so much with so little. Barlow does this by celebrating the artifice of the theatre and theatricality. We suspend our disbelief when watching theater as an audience, but farce takes this experience another step further: it draws our attention to the skillful exploitation of a situation, making the highly improbable completely plausible on the stage. The play itself exists within a very civilized world of proper English mannerisms and cultured charms, the very thin “veneer of civilization” that Deborah Buchan mentions. But instead of revealing the shadowy underworld of pre-war espionage as the book and movie do, the play shows that within the context of the theater, this story is ripe for farce and satire. — Michael R. Latecomers are seated at the discretion of the house manager. Please do not bring food or drink into the theater (bottled water is allowed) and all buildings are smoke-free. The use of recording or photographic equipment during the show is prohibited. Olney Theatre Center is not responsible for any items left on our campus. All children, including babies, require a ticket. We will ask parents to take their children to the lobby if their behavior is disturbing patrons. Please turn off your cell phone in the theaters.
Audio-described performances are offered on the third Wednesday evening during a show’s run, which include pre-show program notes, descriptions of the action, scenery and costumes during pauses in the dialogue. Metropolitan Washington Ear can provide an escort to audio-described performances for patrons who are visually impaired.

Jim Petosa (Artistic Director) has been Artistic Director for Olney Theatre Center since 1994. Since 2002, he has been Director of the School of Theatre at Boston University’s College of Fine Arts. He has also served as a co-artistic director of the Potomac Theatre Project, now PTP/ NYC, since 1987. His Olney Theatre Center directing credits include Opus, Dinner with Friends, Trumpery, The Glass Menagerie, Democracy, Brooklyn Boy, In the Mood, An Enemy of the People, The Elephant Man, The Miracle Worker, Copenhagen, The Laramie Project, Jacques Brel is Alive and Well & Living in Paris [Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Direction], Collected Stories [Helen Hayes Award nomination for Outstanding Direction] and his Look! We Have Come Through! (co-authored with Carole Graham Lehan) [Charles MacArthur Award nomination for Outstanding New Play]. As a guest artist, he has directed at The Kennedy Center, Studio Theatre, Round House Theatre, Washington Jewish Theatre, and Rep Stage. Jim has directed for University of Maryland, College Park; The Catholic University of America; George Washington University; and Middlebury College. Jim is a member of Actors’ Equity Association, and he is a member and has served on the board of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society. Clay Hopper (Associate Artistic Director and Director of The 39 Steps) has been directing for National Players and Summer Shakespeare Festival since 2003. Credits include Two Gentlemen of Verona, Twelfth Night, The Tempest, Othello, The Taming of the Shrew, Much Ado About Nothing, Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet and Amadeus. He also directed Farragut North and Triumph of Love at Olney Theatre Center and Call of the Wild, a musical adaptation of Jack London’s novel by Jon Lipsky, first as a workshop at Boston University, then as a touring production for The National Players on Tour 59, culminating in the World Premier on Olney Theatre Center’s Main Stage in 2009. JJ Kaczynski (Projections Designer) is an actor and graphic artist returning to Olney Theatre Center where he designed the projection plot for Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. His work as a designer has been featured in productions at Round House Theatre, Adventure Theatre, Gala Hispanic Theatre, Happenstance Theatre, Montgomery College, Perseverance Theatre, and OffBroadway at The New York Theatre Workshop.
