A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dear friend of Olney Theatre Center, The year is 1989, and I’ve landed my first internship: in the General Manager’s office of New York’s Public Theatre! The Public is that legendary off-Broadway theater founded by the irascible Joe Papp… and the theater which produced A Chorus Line in 1975 on Broadway, eventually running for a record-setting 6,137 performances. My job at the Public was to take the subway between Astor Place and Times Square six days a week to pick up company manager reports from backstage at A Chorus Line, and bring them back to Joe Papp. I’ll never forget the day the company manager let me walk out on the stage of the Shubert Theatre, and stand on that famous white line, facing an empty Broadway house. Thousands of actors had stood on that line by then, singing, “God I hope I get it”, pouring their hearts out to have a chance at joining the chorus and becoming “one singular sensation” among the hordes of Broadway gypsies. In the nearly 40 years since A Chorus Line swept the Tonys, we may have forgotten just how revolutionary this musical was. The first major musical created by a group of artists – dancers, even! – rather than a traditional writer/composer team. The first major musical to eschew standard book-and-song format. The first major musical to tackle controversial issues so frankly, and so personally. And the first major musical to celebrate theater and theatermakers. Musicals are American theater’s gift to the world, and A Chorus Line revolutionized the American musical theater. Speaking of revolutions…longtime Olney fans will notice a big change in our format for 2014. Instead of selling you a single eight-play subscription, we’re offering three-play memberships in three “mini-seasons”: the Classic, the Contemporary, and the Family Series. Of course, we’d be delighted if you choose all three! But if you don’t have time for nine plays, or you really know what you want, we’ve got three selections just for you! Check out the info in the program to learn more. I’m so glad you’re with us for A Chorus Line and look forward to hearing what you think at Jason@olneytheatre.org. Better yet, visit www.OlneyTheatre.org and leave a Patron Review. We’ve got dozens of patrons eager to share their thoughts. Why don’t you join them? All best and onward!

DRAMATURGICAL NOTES A Chorus Line is the quintessential backstage musical: 24 dancers whittled down to 17, each vying for a coveted place in a Broadway ensemble. The characters speak directly to the audience, telling us about the thrill of a first dance class, the sting of rejection, and the hardships of surviving from paycheck to paycheck. But their testimonials don’t just give a backstage tour of the professional dance world; they provide poignant glimpses into human nature. The musical’s origins have become Broadway legend. On January 18, 1974, dancers Tony Stevens and Michon Peacock invited 22 fellow performers to a midnight pajama party; at that point, the gathering was simply a response to the depleted job market, possibly the beginnings of a dance company of their own. The conversation may have ended there, had their friend and choreographer Michael Bennett not joined them with his tape recorder: “I really want to talk about us,” he told his peers. “I think we’re all pretty interesting, and that all of you are pretty interesting, and I think that maybe there’s a show in that, somewhere.” The evening inspired a project that would ultimately epitomize the concept of collaborative theatre. The group expanded to include a team of passionate artists—lyricist Edward Kleban, writers James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante, award-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch—each of whom contributed his unique voice to the workshops and finished product. The collaborative process wasn’t perfect; Bennett received much of the fortune and acclaim that some argued belonged to the original storytellers, leading to debates about authenticity and exploitation. Ultimately, however, the process culminated in a theatrical landmark, with a fifteen-year Broadway run, nine Tony Awards, and the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Unlike the fantastical musicals from Broadway’s “Golden Age,” A Chorus Line was an honest reflection of contemporary life. There was no pretense of fantasy or happy endings, no intermission to delineate another time or place, and no curtain. The dancers’ stories were direct accounts of “what it takes” to survive in the theatre world, and underscoring all of their testimonials was a chilling but unavoidable fact: only eight of these talented, deserving performers were going to make the cut. As difficult as this final message was, it addressed a need for authenticity, both in the theatre world and beyond. Honesty was in short supply in the 1970s: the economy was in shambles, the Vietnam War was coming to a rocky close, and the Watergate scandal called into question the people’s trust in their own government. Forty years later, the world is as volatile and competitive as ever, and there remains a need for open conversation. A Chorus Line continues to resonate because it doesn’t glaze over the harsh realities of theatre or real life. It may not have a happily-ever-after, but it does offer something that too rarely appears, either on or off the stage: honesty.

DIRECTOR NOTES “The characters portrayed in A Chorus Line are… based upon the lives and experiences of Broadway dancers. This show is dedicated to anyone who has ever danced in a chorus or marched in step… anywhere.” – Michael Bennett, original director and choreographer, A Chorus Line. January 1974: It seemed that Broadway was dying; work for dancers and Broadway performers was at a historic low point. Two Broadway “gypsies” (chorus dancers, the MVPs of Broadway’s workforce) – Tony Stevens and Michon Peacock decided to start a company where people like them could utilize all the skills that they had and were developing – direction, choreography, writing, design – and create their own work. Tony and Michon asked friends and colleagues to attend a “rap session” about the idea, and invited 31-year old up-and-coming director/choreographer Michael Bennett to join. Bennett had long been interested in creating a piece about dancers, and jumped at the chance. So on January 26, 1974, two dozen gypsies came together at the Niklaus Excersize Studio in downtown Manhattan. They danced, competed and hung out. At midnight, Bennett put them in a circle, and started asking them questions about their origins - both in the world, and in the world of dance and theatre. Hours and hours of tapes came out of that night and other subsequent meetings, revealing hopes, dreams, aspirations, regrets, pain and joy – a look at what it means to grow up, to be bitten by the “performing bug” and the reality of life in the business. During this time, Tony Stevens was asked to assist Bob Fosse on a new musical (Chicago), and Michon Peacock was asked to be in it: who could turn that down? Bennett still sensed the makings of a great work for theater, and didn’t want to let the idea drop. He brought the tapes to Joseph Papp at the New York Shakespeare Festival; after listening for a short while, he was hooked and offered Bennett a workshop. The workshop took off with the addition of bookwriters Nicholas Dante and James Kirkwood, composer Marvin Hamlisch and lyricist Ed Kleban. Bennett’s idea – to tell the stories of the lives of Broadway dancers, using the final audition for a new show as the frame – came together quickly. Together, using the tapes as background material and the workshop dancers to experiment, they created a piece that shows with great honesty, with heartbreak and joy, just what we do for love… and for a living. A group of nameless, faceless artists suddenly got to step forward and speak about themselves. Pre- Oprah, preDonahue, pre-reality TV… this was a revolutionary development both for them and for the world of American Musical Theatre. A Chorus Line opened at the Public Theatre on April 15, 1975, and immediately became the hottest ticket in town. Just over three months later, the show moved to Broadway, winning nine Tony Awards (for, among others, Michael Bennett, Donna McKechnie, Kelly Bishop and Sammy Williams), as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Running an unprecedented 15 years and spawning endless touring companies, a recent Broadway and West End Revival, A Chorus Line lives on. The world and the business have changed since then: a commercial theatre then led by strong artistic producers who could nurture artists like Michael Bennett is now led by production companies and endless lists of investors over the titles of shows in the Playbill. But what has endured is that we still dream, we still yearn to fit in, we still put ourselves on the line daily for what we believe in. I began my journey with A Chorus Line in New York City at age eighteen playing “Mark” in a benefit revival of the show – which featured members of the Broadway, European and Italian casts. I was welcomed into the world of the “gypsy” and began earning my stripes. Twenty years ago, my first associate directing/dance captain job was with the show’s national tour. That tour featured Amy Spanger 301.924.3400

DIRECTOR NOTES (of Broadway’s Chicago and Wedding Singer) as Cassie, and Denis Jones (a soon to be Broadway choreographer with Honeymoon In Vegas) as Mike. Over the next decade, I was asked to stage many productions of the show, as well as tour as “Mike” and “Paul”. My A Chorus Line experiences led me to become a director, and devote my career to writing, directing and developing new works. I dedicate this production to: My A Chorus Line family (including Mitzi Hamilton, Kerry Casserly, Lois Englund and Laurie Gamache, as well as many who are no longer with us), which continues to provide friendship and support. To the work of the late Michael Bennett, which inspired me to always “tell the truth onstage”, and to the memory of Tony Stevens, my friend and mentor. Tony taught and reminded the gypsy community to take care of each other, to live life “full tilt boogie” and to embrace the joy of every moment. I once asked him for advice on how to maintain perspective in this uncertain and unstable profession, and he reminded me with his inspirational humor and perspective “that which does not kill us … makes a really great dinner party story.” I am thrilled to re-explore this show and bring it to the Olney with one of the finest casts of “triple threats” I have worked with in a long time. From the newcomer to the touring dancer to the true blue Broadway actor and gypsy, this cast shares a wealth of experience on the stage and a great love for what they do.
Thank you and enjoy the show. STEPHEN NACHAMIE Director

Amy Marshall (Managing Director) joined Olney Theatre Center in October of 2007.
