A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dear friend of Olney Theatre Center, It must be summer at Olney – juleps on the porch, picnics on the lawn, and a classic thriller on stage! What better way to celebrate our 75th anniversary than with a 75-year old Victorian pot-boiler, directed by the theater’s longest-running showman, Associate Artistic Director Jack Going. Angel Street (which you might know better by its movie title, Gaslight) is, by Jack’s accounting, his 48th production at the helm here. From his first, The Mousetrap in 1973, to popular hits like Noises Off (1987) and Over the Tavern (2012), Jack has seen and done it all here at our theater. And he’s about to do it again with a cast of Olney veterans: longtime actor (and Board Member!) Alan Wade as Sergeant Rough, the sublime Julie-Ann Elliott (Hedda Gabler) giving Ingrid Bergman a run for her money, and the inimitable Jeffries Thaiss as the secretive Mr. Manningham. I never look forward before looking back, and that’s why this production is so felicitous a time for us to announce our 76th season, which is all about CHOICE. I want you to make Your Olney as special as possible. For Jack Going fans we’ve got a fantastic Olney Classic series – the astonishing musical Cabaret, August Wilson’s Pulitzerwinning The Piano Lesson, and Clifford Odets’ 1935 classic Awake and Sing! We’ve designed a series for those who want to be on the edge of contemporary theater, too… and of course, for the families nearby, it’s the Olney Family series. I’m sure you’ll agree that there’s something for everyone. I know there’s something for Kathie Quinn, our Show Sponsor for Angel Street: she’s already thinking about what shows to sponsor next year! I’m so glad you’re with us for Angel Street and look forward to hearing what you think at Jason@olneytheatre.org. Better yet, visit www.olneytheatre.org and leave a Patron Review. If you saw our last play, The Submission, you’ll see that we’ve got dozens of patrons eager to share their thoughts. Why don’t you join them?
All best and onward!

DRAMATURGICAL NOTES Playwright Patrick Hamilton believed our most dangerous enemies were always in the room with us and Angel Street, originally titled Gas Light (1938), is a testament to that theory. Strange events plague the lady of the house in this psychodrama as objects disappear and reappear, and the gaslights flicker ominously in the drawing room. Is Bella Manningham losing her mind or is she being driven to doubt her sanity by a manipulative husband? Inspector Rough, who claims to be a Scotland Yard detective, purports the latter. What secrets is this stranger hiding? Arriving at the Manningham household with outlandish theories about murder and stolen jewels, Rough presents a convincing case to Bella Manningham—one that redeems her sanity and incriminates her husband. But is Rough an honest detective? If Bella is in fact losing her mind, how can she accurately gauge his true intentions? Hamilton’s play begs the question, if you can’t trust yourself, how can you trust anyone else? The personality and ideals of the Victorian era—particularly the practices of female suppression and gender stereotyping—frame the atmosphere of Angel Street, which was written after World War I, when psychoanalysis had graduated from theory to dogma. Like no other period preceding it, the Victorian era was dominated by the belief that an individual’s sex and sexuality form the most basic core of his or her identity, potentiality, social standing, and freedom. It is a curious irony that today we commonly portray Victorian sexual mores as puritan, moralistic, and highly repressive when, like never before, sexuality became a focus of public and private attention. The concept of “separate spheres,” or the division of society into a private, domestic, female sphere and an active, public, male one, became the foundation on which the Victorian bourgeoisie constructed its family and sexuality. As guardians of the home and family, women were considered more emotional, dependent, and gentle by nature, which supposedly made them more susceptible to illness. With so little agency, depression and anxiety ran high among Victorian housewives. Thus, many women found themselves wrongly diagnosed insane, or “hysterical.” In fact, in the world of the play, Bella Manningham’s own mother is said to have died insane. If that is true, Bella could be just another hysterical Victorian housewife, doomed to follow her mother down the same path. In such a setting, a husband could easily prove his wife belongs in a sanitarium. Angel Street harkens back to an earlier age of domestic-thrillers, but rather than lend itself to melodrama, Hamilton’s play delves into the human mind, provoking real questions about the line between sanity and madness. Ultimately, it is up for you to decide how strictly that line should be drawn. – Meghan Twible, Education Fellow

CREATIVE STAFF Amy Marshall (Managing Director) joined Olney Theatre Center in October of 2007. Ms. Marshall graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marquette University in 1991 and joined the staff of the Florentine Opera that same year. During her seven years as Production Director at the Florentine, she maintained a balanced production budget every year. In the summer of 2000, she accepted a position with the Milwaukee Ballet. Her enthusiasm for the art form led to her eventual promotion to Executive Director. Under Ms. Marshall’s leadership, the Milwaukee Ballet achieved a balanced budget for the four years she served as Executive Director. That trend has continued as she has lead Olney Theatre Center to a balanced budget for the past three years. In addition, due in large part to Ms. Marshall’s leadership, The Gazette for Politics and Business recognized Olney Theatre Center as one of the top 53 businesses in the state of Maryland in 2011 and 2012.

Together we can help more people become cancer survivors. Joel Brown (on the right), husband and father of three, was treated for stage four throat cancer at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center. He praised the quality and nature of our continuum of care—from diagnosis to radiation and infusion treatment. He’s pictured with Luther Ampey III, MD, Radiation Oncologist and Medical Director, Helen P. Denit Center for Radiation Therapy.
Chances are, cancer’s devastating effects have touched your life in one way or another. We created the Capital Campaign for Oncology at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center to make cancer treatment as accessible, convenient and innovative as possible. Our goal is to bring advanced medical technology, new services and expanded programs to patients, families and our community. Visit MedStarMontgomery.org/SupportOncology or call 301-774-8777 to donate.
