A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dear Friend of Olney Theatre Center, Although we began as a summer theater 75 years ago, in the past couple of decades it’s been during the holiday season when Olney Theatre Center really shines. The first production I saw here was the hit 2011 holiday production of The Sound of Music, and I remember the wonderful energy in the lobby: families in a festive mood, gathered together to see a great, timeless story in a Broadway-quality production. It’s in that tradition that I programmed The King and I. Talk about a great, timeless story! Rodgers’ lush and vibrant score, combined with Hammerstein’s masterful adaptation of this arresting and beautiful story turned The King and I into one of our most enduring, best-loved musicals. “Shall We Dance?”, “The Small House of Uncle Thomas” ballet, “The March of the Siamese Children”… these moments are engraved on our collective cultural memory. That’s what makes a holiday offering at Olney Theatre Company special, right? We relive these moments in the company of our friends, or pass these memories down from one generation to the next with our families. In fact, our entire Family Series next year – the Caribbean-infused musical Once On This Island; our outdoor Shakespeare, The Tempest; and Disney’s The Little Mermaid – are magical opportunities to share stories together, passing a love of live theater from one generation to the next. I hope you love The King and I, and that you’re celebrating this classic American musical with those closest to you. What better way to enjoy the holidays? Let me know what you think at Jason@olneytheatre.org, come back with more friends, check out Paul Morella’s magical A Christmas Carol on the other side of our campus, or Olney Ballet Theatre’s The Nutcracker in the Historic… we want Olney Theatre Center to be your home for the holidays.
With great good wishes for a beautiful season,
Jason Loewith, Artistic Director OLNEY THEATRE CENTER

DIRECTOR’S NOTES A little over ten years ago I directed an original musical for Princeton University’s Triangle Club. Not surprisingly, I was impressed with how very smart everyone was. (My gorgeous blonde leading lady was, literally, a rocket scientist.) I was especially struck by the fact that it seemed all the students were learning to speak Chinese. “Aha!” I thought, “If the brilliant movers and shakers who devise this school’s curriculum are making Chinese a requirement, they must know something about the direction that the fortunes of the world will be heading.” Clearly, they did. I was reminded of this when I started work on The King and I. The King’s forward-thinking desire to have his 1862 Siamese court educated in Western ideas and the English language was absolutely analogous to what I had witnessed at Princeton. And I found myself with a newly heightened appreciation for the King’s sophistication and progressiveness. But of course, the King was trying to steer a course between the constant onslaught of change and the traditions he was bound to uphold. It’s a timeless predicament, and a great theme. This is the theme that lyricist and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II placed at the heart of this show. Yes, it required him to take artistic license with historical facts. The final scene is Hammerstein’s invention, a moving dramatization of one era giving way to the next. But it’s Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s version of this story more than any other – including multiple non-musical film versions, Margaret Landon’s book, and even Anna Leonowens’ own account – that has preserved a place for Anna and the King in the public’s affections. It’s a pleasure for me to return to Olney Theatre Center for another holiday show and to collaborate again with choreographer Tara Jeanne Vallee. She has distilled and adapted the iconic original musical staging by Jerome Robbins, adding her own distinctive point of view. As director, I have tried to honor the show’s creators by giving full value to all their story’s humor, emotion, and drama. I hope you enjoy it. – Mark Waldrop, Director

DRAMATURGICAL NOTES Since the 1951 Broadway premiere of The King and I, the story of Anna and the King of Siam has crystalized in the American imagination as a vibrant, enchanting example of East meets West. At the time, it was an innovation not only artistically, but thematically as well. Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II had already changed the shape of American musical theatre, from the largely sentimental and romanticized work of their contemporaries into relevant, intricate narratives. The King and I was a continuation of their previous artistic innovations, but it broke new thematic ground. As some modern critics have noted, the Broadway smash hit is hardly historically accurate, nor is Margaret Landon’s book, Anna and the King of Siam, from which the musical was based. Landon’s bestseller, in turn, was a retelling of Anna Leonowens’ two books, The English Governess at the Siamese Court and Romance of the Harem. These were sprawling, elegant stories of adventure and exoticism; Leonowens fictionalized major portions of these supposedly true accounts, padding her story with danger and intrigue, embellishing the character of King Mongkut and his enclosed palace world. The real teacher and king who inspired so many retellings, however, reveal a complexity and depth that the musical recognizes and illuminates. The “real” Leonowens, the woman who spent five years as a tutor in the Siamese Grand Palace, bears little resemblance to the highbrow gentlewoman critics have interpreted her as. When she and her son disembarked from the Chow Phya in March 1862, Anna was a newcomer to Siam, but she was no stranger to the culture and world of Southeast Asia. In fact, the descendant of an English soldier and his Indian wife, Anna spent her childhood traveling through India, learning a variety of languages and developing a passion for education and reform. As one of the only foreigners to ever set foot inside the Grand Palace, Anna would have been shocked by some Siamese customs and practices – polygamy and slavery, for example, sharply contrasted with her personal values—but on the whole, she had a deep admiration for Eastern religion and culture. King Mongkut was also the product of a unique upbringing; for more than two decades, he lived as a Buddhist monk, traveling his kingdom, studying science and humanities under Western teachers, and witnessing how palace decisions affected people of all walks of life. In his monarchy, he sought to integrate modern reforms into his country without sacrificing the integrity of Siamese culture. He recognized his country’s precarious international situation, as Siam was surrounded by countries that had lost their independence to Western powers, and further imperialism seemed inevitable. King Mongkut’s ability to compromise and work diplomatically with Westerners is still cited as the major reason that Siam remained the only South Asian country to resist European colonization. Mongkut sought a similar open-mindedness in his royal teacher. He hired three missionaries before Anna, all of whom agreed to instruct the King’s children in English while underhandedly trying to impart to them Christianity and Western values. The stipulations of Anna’s employment—“knowledge of English language, science, and literature, and not for conversion to Christianity”—were well within the governess’ personal ideologies, and Anna had no intentions of indoctrinating her pupils with Western values, as some modern critics believe. Mongkut and Leonowens’ relationship was far more complex than adaptations have depicted: Anna was not attempting to convert a tyrant to her European ideologies, nor was their relationship complicated by an undercurrent of romantic desire. Both were dedicated to reform and enlightenment, with different ideas of how to best achieve it. Of the many adaptations of Leonowens’ story, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s is the most sincere. The artistic duo shared a similar worldview to that of Leonowens and King Mongkut—they advocated for respect and understanding, and had not only a tolerance, but an appreciation for diversity. Integrating these massive themes into a popular musical was groundbreaking for its time, and it remains as resonant today as it did half a century ago. The most enduring version of Anna and King Mongkut’s tale may not be historically accurate—but the integrity of the true story still reverberates in The King and I. – Maegan Clearwood, Dramaturg

WHO’S WHO Rodgers & Hammerstein After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902-79) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most consistently fruitful and successful partnership in the American musical theatre. Don’t let a bad fall ruin a wonderful winter. Losing your footing on ice and snow can pose a serious injury threat. Here are some simple tips for staying safe on streets and sidewalks this winter.
Avoid slips and falls: Assume all wet areas are slippery and icy. Don’t walk with your hands in your pockets. Use shoulder straps instead of carrying bags and other items in your hands. Wear footwear that provides traction. Shovel and apply salt to driveways, walkways and sidewalks. If you do feel yourself falling, use your hands to break your fall. If a slip-and-fall injury does occur: • Our dedicated emergency room staff is standing by 24/seven in our newly expanded Emergency Department. • Board-certified pediatricians are available around the clock, offering young patients access to a variety of specialized care throughout the hospital.
