DEAR FRIENDS OF OLNEY THEATRE CENTER Dig out that old camping stove, strap on your Wellies, and unroll your sleeping bag: it’s time to take a voyage to Neville’s Island! I’m delighted to welcome you to the second offering of our landmark 75th Anniversary Season. Tim Firth, the British wit who you might know as the screenwriter of Calendar Girls and Kinky Boots, has penned a hilarious (and surprisingly deep) mashup of The Office and Survivor. Four middle-aged middle managers, off on one of those horrible team building exercises white collar folks at big corporations know so well, take a wrong turn on the Derwent River. And instead of ending up at the Pub with their coworkers, they crash their boat on a teeny, deserted, fogbound island. Far better prepared for a sales meeting than a night in the wilderness, our four protagonists struggle mightily, and find themselves in a situation straight out of Lord of the Flies. Your theater is working hard to program plays that appeal to all the audiences in our growing, evermore diverse community. If you’re a fan of new comedies like Neville’s Island, you won’t want to miss the off-Broadway hit The Submission in the spring and our upcoming world premiere of Steven Dietz’s stinging satire Rancho Mirage in the fall. If you’ve always enjoyed bringing your family to Olney, secure your tickets now for our two big musicals on the docket: A Chorus Line in the summer and The King & I during the holidays. And if it’s classics you love, we’ve got Angel Street ready for you in June, followed by an adventurous rep of Hamlet and St. Joan performed by four actors (four actors!) in September. It’s an amazing, diverse season, something for everyone, from the most beloved classics to great new plays by American masters. We can’t do it alone. Neville’s Island wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of our production sponsor Patricia Woodbury, FTI Consulting and all of our donors and patrons for their enthusiastic support. I’m so glad you’re here with us for Neville’s Island, and if you make it off the island, would you let me know what you think at Jason@olneytheatre.org? We’re going to start posting patron reviews on our website, and I’d love to include your review. All best, and onward!

haleeha G’ntamobi’s stirring new play about an alcoholic black mother and her card-sharp son trying to get out of the projects has just been accepted into the nation’s preeminent theater festival. Trouble is, Shaleeha G’ntamobi doesn’t exist, except in the imagination of wannabe white playwright Danny, who created her as a kind of affirmative-action nom-de-plume. DIRECTOR’S NOTES What I love about great comedies, such as Neville’s Island, is that through laughter, our beautifully flawed humanity is revealed. We can all relate to feeling stuck, either in traffic, in a job, or in a relationship. Surely, many of us have co-workers with whom we would never want to spend a weekend. Such is the hilarious plight of these four middle managers that have sprung from the genius mind of Tim Firth. The kind of corporate training event in which these characters find themselves is designed to take them out of their “comfort zone” and force them to work together in a new way. Here’s a quote from one such company’s website: “Teams experience a shift from working as individuals to working as a collective force to achieve a common goal. An excellent way to renew a group’s excitement, commitment and team spirit! Because the location is so different, concentration improves, everyday worries are disposed of more quickly and teamwork and cooperation are quickly developed.” If only the experience we so easy for Angus, Roy, Gordon, and Neville. Teamwork is about collaboration; so is theatre-making. Collaboration is messy, surprising, painful, joyous, tedious, thrilling, and more. Collaboration assumes that the work of the group will always be better that the work of the individual. Collaboration is one of the key reasons why I love this profession and why I am fortunate to be part of this incredible institution. Jason King Jones Director Neville’s Island 301.924.3400

DRAMATURGICAL NOTES The play’s tagline—“A comedy in thick fog”—rings true for more than the literal fog encompassing the island. Four middle-aged, middle-management men start out on what they expect to be a cushy office retreat and end up stranded on a deserted island in the Lake District. Marooned for only one night, these gentlemen get themselves into an impressive amount of trouble. Their attempts at teamwork create one ridiculous situation after another. With each failure, tension builds, patience recedes, and the fog continues to roll in. Tim Firth’s Neville’s Island was first produced by the Stephen Joseph Theatre of North Yorkshire in 1993 and has been in almost continuous production since. The 1994 Nottingham Playhouse production went on to the Apollo Theatre in London’s West End that same year, where it was nominated for an Evening Standard award and four Laurence Olivier awards. It has since been produced regularly in the UK and all over the world; translated into several languages. A major topic of Neville’s Island is the issue of the middle class. The reality of the British class system does not differ so greatly from that of the United States, but class psychology is another matter. For centuries, British society has depended on class identity: the preoccupation with class, the belief in class, and the symbols of class in manners, dress, and language. In this play, as order degrades, the characters’ fixations on social status come to a head. Amid the laughter, Neville’s Island runs high with rumors and prejudices, fears of loneliness, resentment, and conflicting mores. Civilized behavior evaporates and the layers of self-identity unravel in a maelstrom of recrimination and self-analysis. As playwright Tim Firth said in an interview, “This may look like a teambuilding exercise, but it is really survival of the fittest.” Glossary Rampsholme Island: Rampsholme Island is located on Derwentwater, which is one of the principal bodies of water in the Lake District National Park in North West England. Cricket: Cricket was first played in southern England in the 16th century. By the end of the 18th century, it had developed into the national sport of England. It is a bat-and-ball game played on a field between two teams of 11 players. Like baseball, each team takes a turn at bat while the other team fields, attempting to prevent the batting team from scoring runs. Teams may bat once or twice, depending upon the format of the game. Once ten batsmen from the batting side have been dismissed, the team is said to be all out and the two teams change roles. French Cricket: French Cricket is an informal version of Cricket, most often played by children. It only requires one batsman and any number of fielders. Bonfire Night: Otherwise known as Guy Fawkes Day, November 5th commemorates the failed Gunpowder Plot, a conspiracy to blow up the English Parliament and King James I in 1605. The anniversary is named after Guy Fawkes, the most famous of the conspirators. The plot was intended to be the beginning of a great uprising of English Catholics, who were distressed by the increased severity of penal laws against the practice of their religion. While the plot involved a small number of men, it provoked hostility against all English Catholics and led to even more harsh laws against them. Today, the event is accompanied by firework displays, the lighting of bonfires, and the ceremonial effigy-burning of Guy Fawkes. – Meghan Twible, Education Fellow

Scenic Construction for Neville’s Island by Olney Theatre Center in association with Bella Faccia, Paul Falcon - President
Olney Theatre Center for the Arts is a professional theater employing members of Actors’ Equity Association, the union of professional actors and stage managers in the United States. Actors’ Equity Association, founded in 1913, represents more than 45,000 actors and stage managers in the U.S. Equity negotiates wages and working conditions, providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans. Equity seeks to foster the art of live theatre as an essential component of our society.
Olney Theatre Center for the Arts is a member of Theatre Communications Group, the national service organization representing the not-for-profit American theater; the Cultural Alliance of Greater Washington; the League of Washington Theatres; and the Baltimore Theatre Alliance.
Avoid spring breaks —and other injuries.
Spring is the season for many of us to roll off the couch and venture outdoors again. Protect yourself from injury by practicing a few basic safety rules: • Home improvement accidents send countless do-it-yourselfers to emergency rooms. Wear safety glasses, and avoid jewelry while using power tools—and remember that rushing to finish a job can lead to injuries. • We don’t think of baseball or softball as contact sports, yet thousands of players end up in the ER each season. Always wear the proper safety equipment: helmets for hitters and masks with throat guards for catchers. Call 301-774-8881 or visit MedStarMontgomery.org/ER to receive a free hot/cold pack.
