OLNEY THEATRE CENTE R

2014 FAMILY SERIES

A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dear friend of Olney Theatre Center, A little girl cries out in fear, her screams piercing the wind and storm of a violent hurricane blowing through the Gulf of Mexico. The adults sheltering with her – relatives, friends of her family, and even perfect strangers caught in the tempest – gather around to give her comfort. And how do they comfort her? They begin to dance. And they begin to sing: There is an island where rivers run deep. Where the sea – sparkling in the sun – earns it the name, Jewel of the Antilles … So begins the joyful, life-affirming musical you’re about to see: Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty’s Caribbean masterpiece, Once On This Island. The little girl’s guardian angels, magically transformed into the gods of the island, weave the tale of the beautiful peasant Ti Moune and her love for a grande homme from the other side of the island, Daniel. Like so many great loves, it is a passion broken apart by hurricane-strength forces: in this case, class and race. But like any great story, their tragic love becomes the seed of an incredible hope that brings the island – and us – together. I chose this Tony-nominated musical to launch our new Family Series for a number of reasons. First, I think it’s a superb piece of theater. Second, it’s a musical that audiences of any age – as long as they have an open heart – can enjoy. And third, it gives us at Olney an opportunity to work with some stellar artists: Director Alan Muraoka, Music Director Darius Smith, Choreographer Darren Lee, and some of the area’s most extraordinary performers. But the most important reason I chose Once On This Island ? Because it celebrates how powerful storytelling can heal a community. Of all art forms, I believe theater has the greatest capacity to bring people of differing backgrounds and differing opinions together… and in so doing, remind us of all that binds us together. At a time in American history when politics and other media compete to drive us apart, Once On This Island ennobles all that unites us. The rest of our Family Series (The Tempest and Disney’s The Little Mermaid: coincidentally, also stories of young women caught between land and sea!) shares Once On This Island’s themes of forging community and finding redemption through love. I hope you’ll join us for them, and for the other theatrical adventures in our 76th season. I’m delighted to have met many of you in person and via email, and want to meet more of our amazing audience. Will you drop me a line at Jason@olneytheatre.org and let me know what you think of the show? Onward!

DRAMATURGICAL NOTES For those of us from the East Coast, the enormous damage that nature can wreak on a community needs little introduction. We are all-too-familiar with over-dramatized media coverage, images of storm-ravaged neighborhoods that clog our Facebook feed for days on end – stories that sometimes spur us to donate a few dollars to the Red Cross, but more often than not disappear from our consciousness as soon as we flip off the TV. And then Sandy happened. For many, it was the first time that those images became more than just pictures on a screen. This was a story that transcended geographic, social, and economic boundaries; the same winds that blazed through Jamaica, Cuba, and Haiti toppled buildings and trees along the U.S. coastline, making us all part of one story. The numbers speak for themselves: Sandy caused $65 billion in wreckage; at least 650,000 homes were damaged; and 159 people were killed, hundreds more injured. Out of this destruction, however, came something truly magical: communities flourished. In spite of, or perhaps because of, the immense devastation, neighborhoods, towns, and cities came together for the sake of recovery. Neighbors who had never met created makeshift families in storm shelters, and thousands volunteered their time, money, and homes to help total strangers. Again, the numbers are enough: 507 agencies volunteered to help with recovery; more than 1.6 million meals were distributed; 182,000 survivors received financial aid; and more than 23,000 people found refuge in temporary shelters. This unexpected silver lining is one that researchers have identified time and again. According to Rebecca Solnit, author of the book A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities That Arise in Disaster, these outwardly insurmountable events rarely result chaos, as the media likes to portray. “Most people in disasters, in fact, are altruistic, generous, brave, improvisational, deeply communitarian – and even though it’s terrible, even though there’s been loss of life and everything’s been disrupted, they find a sense of community and purpose and agency … When all the ordinary divides and patterns are shattered, people step up to become their brothers’ keepers.” If any country can understand this paradox, it is Haiti. Once dubbed the Jewel of the Antilles, this tropical backdrop for Once On This Island went from being the most lucrative colony in the world and home of the only successful slave rebellion in history to the poorest country in the western hemisphere. Over the last two centuries, Haiti has been plagued by disaster – political insurrections, hurricanes, and most recently, earthquakes – and yet, somehow, it has managed to retain a remarkably vibrant culture. Storytelling is at the heart of this cultural resilience; despite years of hardship, Haitians continue this narrative ritual, retelling stories of magic and realism, triumph and defeat, life and death. Olney Theatre Center’s production of Once On This Island brings together two seemingly unrelated worlds: a displaced American community, and the ever-struggling island of Haiti. As the characters weave a story out of these two landscapes, they explore a human connectedness that transcends even the most insurmountable of walls. Telling stories cannot rebuild houses or undo the damage caused by gale-force winds; as the narrators in Once On This Island reveal, however, something as simple as a fairy tale can yield incredible power – to remember, entertain, and even heal. To read more of Sonit’s research, and to explore the world of the play more fully, please pick up a context guide in the lobby or visit our dramaturgy blog at http://olneyonceonthisisland.wordpress.com. – Maegan Clearwood, Dramaturg

WHO’S WHO - CREATIVE Punishment, and Working It Out (CENTERSTAGE, Baltimore), Adding Machine: A Musical (Studio Theatre, DC), and a dozen plays for Chicago’s Next Theatre Company, where he served as Artistic Director from 2002-08. Those credits include the Chicago area premieres of Dying City, Defiance, The Long Christmas Ride Home, and Fabulation. He conceived and directed the world premiere of The American Dream Songbook, wrote and directed the world premiere of War With the Newts, and produced Chicago premieres by Caryl Churchill, Suzan-Lori Parks, Carson Kreitzer, Sam Shepard, Dael Orlandersmith, and many more. He is a three-time grantee from the NEA for Artistic Excellence, a recipient of support from the Rockefeller MAP Fund and MacArthur’s International Connections Fund, and a TCG New Generations Future Leaders grant. Jason joined Olney as Artistic Director in 2013 after serving four years as Executive Director of the National New Play Network. Amy Marshall (Managing Director) joined Olney Theatre Center in October of 2007. Ms. Marshall graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marquette University in 1991 and joined the staff of the Florentine Opera that same year. During her seven years as Production Director at the Florentine, she maintained a balanced production budget every year. In the summer of 2000, she accepted a position with the Milwaukee Ballet. Her enthusiasm for the art form led to her eventual promotion to Executive Director. Under Ms. Marshall’s leadership, the Milwaukee Ballet achieved a balanced budget for the four years she served as Executive Director. That trend has continued as she has lead Olney Theatre Center to a balanced budget for the past three years. In addition, due in large part to Ms. Marshall’s leadership, The Gazette for Politics and Business recognized Olney Theatre Center as one of the top 53 businesses in the state of Maryland in 2011 and 2012.
