A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dear Friend of Olney Theatre Center, I’m just back from a trip to London where I caught the National Theatre’s production of Othello, set in the midst of a contemporary Middle Eastern war, and a beautifully-rendered Renaissance era Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Old Globe, sitting in the stalls eating peanuts and throwing shells at Bottom and his friends. Other recent Shakespeare productions I remember include a wild-west Taming of the Shrew, a Tempest overflowing with waterborne gymnastics, and our own slapstick-and-vaudeville Comedy of Errors, courtesy of National Players. What’s funny is that I remember the productions of these plays, but not the words. I’m no Shakespeare purist, trust me: I’ve worked on many a classic play that set the action in a time and space completely divorced from the text, and I loved them. (Who can forget Michael Kahn’s marvelous Love’s Labour’s Lost set on an ashram in the 70s?) But after seeing the BEDLAM Saint Joan and Hamlet, I’m rethinking my position. Bedlam is a fantastic, youthful, and seriously smart company dedicated to making the words of the greatest plays in the western canon leap off the page, across the stage, and into your hearts and minds. There is no set, the actors hardly wear costumes, and the music – when there is any – is played by a hand-held tape recorder. Oh, and did I mention they only use four actors to play all the roles? This is theater at its most elemental. No tricks, no gimmicks, no setting in a distant place, at a different time: just a gathering space for the audience, four wonderfully skilled actors, and the words. And what glorious words they are! Joan’s speech in the interrogation scene in Saint Joan will burn into your core; the monologues in Hamlet will sound new and unfamiliar because they’ve been divorced from all the trappings of contemporary Shakespeare production. If the play’s the thing – and surely it is – that’s what you’re going to see and hear at this performance. ABOUT BEDLAM BEDLAM is a company committed to the immediacy of the relationship between the actor and the audience. With large ideas and modest budgets, we create theatre in a flexible, raw space and are interested in new writing, contemporary reappraisals of the classics and small-scale musical theatre. The theatre we make always includes the audience. Storytelling is paramount to us. We believe that innovative use of space can collapse aesthetic distance and bring the audience into direct contact with the dangers and delicacies of life––inciting laughter and chaos, exciting thinking and recreating the thrill of lived experience. JOAN THE ORIGINAL AND THE PRESUMTUOUS (FROM SHAW’S PREFACE TO SAINT JOAN) Joan of Arc, a village girl from the Vosges, was born about 1412; burnt for heresy, witchcraft, and sorcery in 1431; rehabilitated after a fashion in 1456; designated Venerable in1904; declared Blessed in 1908; and finally canonized in 1920. She is the most notable Warrior Saint in the Christian calendar, and the queerest fish among the eccentric worthies of the Middle Ages. Though a professed and most pious Catholic, and the projector of a Crusade against the Hussites, she was in fact one of the first Protestant martyrs. She was also one of the first apostles of Nationalism, and the first French practitioner of Napoleonic realism in warfare as distinguished from the sporting ransom-gambling chivalry of her time. She was the pioneer of rational dressing for women, and, like Queen Christina of Sweden two centuries later, to say nothing of Catalina de Erauso and innumerable obscure heroines who have disguised themselves as men to serve as soldiers and sailors, she refused to accept the specific woman’s lot, and dressed and fought and lived as men did. As she contrived to assert herself in all these ways with such force that she was famous throughout western Europe before she was out of her teens (indeed she never got out of them), it is hardly surprising that she was judicially burnt, ostensibly for a number of capital crimes which we no longer punish as such, but essentially for what we call unwomanly and insufferable presumption. At eighteen Joan’s pretensions were beyond those of the proudest Pope or the haughtiest emperor. She claimed to be the ambassador and plenipotentiary of God, and to be, in effect, a member of the Church Triumphant whilst still in the flesh on earth. She patronized her own king, and summoned the English king to repentance and obedience to her commands. She lectured, talked down, and overruled statesmen and prelates. She pooh-poohed the plans of generals, leading their troops to victory on plans of her own. She had an unbounded and quite unconcealed contempt for official opinion, judgment, and authority, and for War Office tactics and strategy. Had she been a sage and monarch in whom the most venerable hierarchy and the most illustrious dynasty converged, her pretensions and proceedings would have been as trying to the official mind as the pretensions of Caesar were to Cassius. As her actual condition was pure upstart, there were only two opinions about her. One was that she was miraculous: the other that she was unbearable.

DRAMATURGICAL NOTES How do artists create a world that exists only in words? How do we bring those words to life in a way that invites audiences into the world, asking them to listen and look afresh? Bedlam offers a beautifully simple answer to these questions: tell the story. Like a tight jazz combo that crafts its music through masterful improvisations built off a basic theme, Bedlam’s four-person company have taken Shaw’s and Shakespeare’s plays and utilized a jazz-like rehearsal process to shape the physical life of these productions. In jazz no single musician can determine the flow of the performance—it emerges out of the musical conversation, a give-and-take as performers propose new ideas, respond to other’s ideas, and elaborate or modify those ideas as the performance moves forward. For this unique two-play, four-actor rep, Eric Tucker and his company started with the words themselves. In rehearsal, they played around with how to bring those words to life, and performance they invite their audiences to join them each night into the distinct worlds they created. Bedlam has found a refreshingly organic way to reach the (sometimes devastating, always empowering) humanity of these classic dramatic works. Keeping the text intact, Ted, Andrus, Tom, and Eric juggle and sometimes share multiple characters. Their seamless transitions between roles challenge audience members to be active participants of their theatrical experience. And active participation is what Bedlam is all about. With traditional pomp, historic clothing, and the theatrical baggage of centuries of performances all stripped away, Bedlam empowers audiences to encounter these great plays as if for the first time. 301.924.3400

WHO’S WHO George Bernard Shaw (Playwright: Saint Joan) was born in Dublin, the son of a civil servant. His education was irregular, due to his dislike of any organized training. After working in an estate agent’s office for a while he moved to London as a young man (1876), where he established himself as a leading music and theatre critic in the eighties and nineties and became a prominent member of the Fabian Society, for which he composed many pamphlets. He began his literary career as a novelist; as a fervent advocate of the new theatre of Ibsen (The Quintessence of Ibsenism, 1891) he decided to write plays in order to illustrate his criticism of the English stage. His earliest dramas were called appropriately Plays Pleasant and Unpleasant (1898). Among these, Widower’s Houses and Mrs. Warren’s Profession savagely attack social hypocrisy, while in plays such as Arms and the Man and The Man of Destiny the criticism is less fierce. Shaw’s radical rationalism, his utter disregard of conventions, his keen dialectic interest and verbal wit often turn the stage into a forum of ideas, and nowhere more openly than in the famous discourses on the Life Force, “Don Juan in Hell”, the third act of the dramatization of woman’s love chase of man, Man and Superman (1903). In the plays of his later period discussion sometimes drowns the drama, in Back to Methuselah (1921), although in the same period he worked on his masterpiece Saint Joan (1923), in which he rewrites the well-known story of the French maiden and extends it from the Middle Ages to the present. Other important plays by Shaw are Caesar and Cleopatra (1901), a historical play filled with allusions to modern times, and Androcles and the Lion (1912), in which he exercised a kind of retrospective history and from modern movements drew deductions for the Christian era. In Major Barbara (1905), one of Shaw’s most successful “discussion” plays, the audience’s attention is held by the power of the witty argumentation that man can achieve aesthetic salvation only through political activity, not as an individual. The Doctor’s Dilemma (1906), facetiously classified as a tragedy by Shaw, is really a comedy the humor of which is directed at the medical profession. Candida (1898), with social attitudes toward sex relations as objects of his satire, and Pygmalion (1912), a witty study of phonetics as well as a clever treatment of middle-class morality and class distinction, proved some of Shaw’s greatest successes on the stage. It is a combination of the dramatic, the comic, and the social corrective that gives Shaw’s comedies their special flavor. Shaw’s complete works appeared in thirty-six volumes between 1930 and 1950, the year of his death. 301.924.3400
William Shakespeare (Playwright: Hamlet) Despite being history’s most produced and studied English playwright, little is known of William Shakespeare’s life. One of six siblings, Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon on or about April 23, 1564. He married Anne Hathaway in 1582 and had three children. For the seven years after, Shakespeare fell off all record. Eventually, he arose in London and joined The Lord Chamberlain’s Men acting troupe. In 1603, when the troupe came into King James’ favor, they officially became The King’s Men.
Shakespeare’s professional days are a mixture of fact and legend. In 1601, he and his business partners purchased property on the south bank of London’s Thames River, where they established the Globe Theatre. There, the acting company performed many of Shakespeare’s 37 plays. Famed for using the iambic pentameter writing style, Shakespeare’s works are deep in metaphor, illusion, and character; sometimes taking precedence over plot. A diverse playwright, he began his career writing historical plays, bawdy comedies, and the occasional tragedy. Later in life, his plays became more structurally complex, featuring his iconic Hamlet and Macbeth and the curious tragicomedies Cymbeline and The Tempest.
William Shakespeare died on or about April 23rd, 1616, and is interred at a chapel in Stratford-upon-Avon. A century after his death, questions began to arise; his birthdate, deathdate, and even the spelling of his name are in question. No definitive portrait exists of the man, and no government record lists his theatric profession. Many scholars have questioned the ability of a minimally educated man to create such challenging writing. Some theorists have long held that “Shakespeare” was a nom de plume for another playwright, nobleman, or even collection of writers. However, the vast majority of scholars believe that unofficial documentation provides proof of Shakespeare’s existence and prolific abilities. Regardless, Shakespeare’s plays have been translated to 118 languages and are now in constant production around the world. Elisabeth A. Trampas Thompson (Fight Coordinator) A professional stuntman and stunt coordinator, he has appeared in over 80 films including all four Pirates of the Caribbean films, National Treasure, Prince of Persia, and most recently Darren Aronofsky’s Noah and Winter’s Tale directed by Akiva Goldsman. He is currently coordinating fights for Tina Packer’s Women of Will, now running Off-Broadway. Jason Loewith (Artistic Director) won Lucille Lortel, Outer Critics Circle, and Jeff Awards for Best New Musical for Adding Machine: A Musical, which he co-wrote with composer Joshua Schmidt (off-Broadway, 2008). His latest musical is Big Nate: The Musical, which premiered in May at Adventure Theatre. Recent regional work as a director includes the world premiere of Broke (Alliance Theatre, Atlanta), Time Stands Still (Everyman, Baltimore), Crime and Punishment and Working It Out (CENTERSTAGE, Baltimore), Adding Machine: A Musical (Studio Theatre, DC), and a dozen plays for Chicago’s Next Theatre Company, where he served as artistic director from 2002-08. Those credits include the Chicago area premieres of Dying City, Defiance, The Long Christmas Ride Home, and Fabulation. He conceived and directed the world premiere of The American Dream Songbook, wrote and directed the world premiere of War With the Newts, and produced Chicago premieres by Caryl Churchill, Suzan-Lori Parks, Carson Kreitzer, Sam Shepard, Dael Orlandersmith, and many more. He is a threetime grantee from the NEA for Artistic Excellence, a recipient of support from the Rockefeller MAP Fund and MacArthur’s International Connections Fund, and a TCG New Generations Future Leaders grant. Mr. Loewith joined us as Artistic Director after serving four years as Executive Director of the National New Play Network.

Marc Hurst (Lighting Designer) is excited to be designing his first show at Olney Theatre Center. Marc received his BA in Theater from SUNY Geneseo and is a few thesis pages away from earning his MFA in Lighting Design from the University of South Carolina. For the last few years, he has worked at The Lost Colony working with designers Paul Gallo and William Ivey Long. Other design work includes working with Al Crawford at Arc3 Design in New York acting as an associate designer. Some of his favorite projects include Language of Angels at USC, Assassins with Trustus Theatre, and The Ailey at the Apollo Gala with Arc3 Design. Upcoming projects include Don Quixote with the Columbia Classical Ballet.

Amy Marshall (Managing Director) joined Olney Theatre Center in October of 2007. Ms. Marshall graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marquette University in 1991 and joined the staff of the Florentine Opera that same year. During her seven years as Production Director at the Florentine, she maintained a balanced production budget every year. In the summer of 2000, she accepted a position with the Milwaukee Ballet. Her enthusiasm for the art form led to her eventual promotion to Executive Director. Under Ms. Marshall’s leadership, the Milwaukee Ballet achieved a balanced budget for the four years she served as Executive Director. That trend has continued as she has lead Olney Theatre Center to a balanced budget for the past three years. In addition, due in large part to Ms. Marshall’s leadership, The Gazette for Politics and Business recognized Olney Theatre Center as one of the top 53 businesses in the state of Maryland in 2011 and 2012.
