A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dear Friend of Olney Theatre Center, I’m very lucky to be an Artistic Director all the time, but there’s nothing more thrilling about my job than producing a brand-new play. Dozens of theatermakers unite behind a playwright to serve as midwives at the birth of a new work of art. Will it flop? Will it become the pivotal work in a playwright’s career? Will it end up affecting millions of people across the country, or across the world? We take the risk because we believe passionately that new plays blaze the trail for all of us – not just theatermakers and theater-lovers, but the country at large. Our greatest playwrights take the temperature of the nation and enter into conversation with it, one community at a time. This mission is urgent now, as the lure of lucrative (and satisfying) writing gigs on television and in film draw away compelling voices, and the partisan voices screaming at us from every side trample nuanced thought beneath them. That’s why you’re here today at the first performances of Rancho Mirage by Steven Dietz. Steven is one of America’s foremost and most-produced playwrights, and one of the most insightful toilers in the field of the American Dream. He is compassionately critical of our failings as a country, but endlessly optimistic about its potential. My first professional gig, back in 1993, was serving as assistant director on one of his early plays, God’s Country, which investigated with theatrical passion and brutal honesty the killing of a Jewish radio celebrity by a neo-Nazi group. So it is beyond meaningful for my Olney Theatre directing debut to be his newest play. Rancho Mirage is Steven writing in a much brighter key, even as minor chords underscore the action. It was also critical to me that my directing debut feature a cast of veteran Olney actors, and the group we’ve assembled, taken together, have performed in dozens of plays on our stages. Six of the DC area’s best known artists – Tonya Beckman, James Konicek, Susan Lynskey, Paul Morella, Tracy Lynn Olivera, and Michael Russotto – are joined by Sydney Lemmon, who just last spring “graduated” from our own educational program, National Players. DRAMATURGICAL NOTES “Do you remember how easy it used to be to make money?” Nick Dahner laments in Steven Deitz’s Rancho Mirage. And less than a decade ago, it was. Before the economic crisis 2007, the American middle class was relatively stable: jobs were in ample supply, salaries were on the rise, and people were buying the homes of their dreams. Then the housing bubble burst, and suddenly, families were forced to contend with foreclosures, lay-offs, salary cuts, and the prospect that the next generation may be in worse economic condition than that of their parents. National foreclosure rates have decreased over the past three years, but for many, the Dahners’ struggles are still prevalent. One in every 598 housing units in Maryland received a foreclosure filing in July of 2013, compared to one in 1,001 nationally—making it the ninth worst state for foreclosures in the country. Nick and Diane are forced to come to terms with a radically different economic reality, in the same way that thousands of Americans have been evicted from their homes and forced to restart their lives. The Dahners’ economic struggles aren’t the only secrets that reveal themselves over the course of their tumultuous evening, but they are an example of how the American Dream is radically changing. For generations, James Truslow Adams’ 1931 definition of the Dream has served as a national mantra: “the dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.” Today, in an economic environment where opportunities are sparse and growth is limited, these ideals are simply no longer possible. But Americans are nothing if not determined. According to a 2011 survey, the majority of the population is confident that their American Dream is achievable—what’s changed is their definition. Homeownership and wealth ranked dead last in terms of defining factors; family came in first. Americans are reshaping their dreams, just as the disillusioned characters are forced to do in Steven Dietz’ play. As wine flows and inhibitions drop, the six friends expose secrets and betrayals that for years have been ignored for the sake of complacency. The insulated world of Rancho Mirage is suddenly bombarded with difficult, painful realities, but at the heart of these struggles is honesty—something the three couples have long avoided. So, although their new American Dream may no longer include expensive cars or colossal homes, it could offer something even more valuable.

WHO’S WHO Steven Dietz (Playwright) Steven Dietz’s thirty-plus plays have been seen at over one hundred regional theatres in the United States, as well as Off-Broadway. Mr. Dietz is a two-time recipient of the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays Award (Fiction, Still Life with Iris), as well as a two-time finalist for the Steinberg New Play Award (Last of the Boys, Becky’s New Car). Other awards include the 2007 Edgar® Award for Best Mystery Play for Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure; the PEN USA West Award in Drama for Lonely Planet; and the 1995 Yomuiri Shimbun Award (the Japanese “Tony”) for his adaptation of Shusaku Endo’s novel Silence. Other widely-produced plays include Yankee Tavern, Shooting Star, Jackie and Me (from Dan Gutman), Inventing van Gogh, God’s Country, Private Eyes, Dracula (from Bram Stoker), and The Nina Variations. Mr. Dietz’s plays have been translated into eight languages. International productions of his work have been seen in England, Japan, Germany, France, Australia, Sweden, Austria, Russia, Slovenia, Luxembourg, Greece, Argentina, Peru, Korea, Singapore, and South Africa. Mr. Dietz and his family divide their time between Seattle and Austin, where he teaches playwriting and directing at the University of Texas. Jason Loewith (Artistic Director and Director of Rancho Mirage) won Lucille Lortel, Outer Critics Circle, and Jeff Awards for Best New Musical for Adding Machine: A Musical, which he co-wrote with composer Joshua Schmidt (off-Broadway, 2008). His latest musical is Big Nate: The Musical, which premiered in May at Adventure Theatre. Recent regional work as a director includes the world premiere of Broke (Alliance Theatre, Atlanta), Time Stands Still (Everyman, Baltimore), Crime and Punishment and Working It Out (CENTERSTAGE, Baltimore), Adding Machine: A Musical (Studio Theatre, DC), and a dozen plays for Chicago’s Next Theatre Company, where he served as artistic director from 2002-08. Those credits include the Chicago area premieres of Dying City, Defiance, The Long Christmas Ride Home, and Fabulation. He conceived and directed the world premiere of The American Dream Songbook, wrote and directed the world premiere of War With the Newts, and produced Chicago premieres by Caryl Churchill, Suzan-Lori Parks, Carson Kreitzer, Sam Shepard, Dael Orlandersmith, and many more. He is a three-time grantee from the NEA for Artistic Excellence, a recipient of support from the Rockefeller MAP Fund and MacArthur’s International Connections Fund, and a TCG New Generations Future Leaders grant. Mr. Loewith joined us as Artistic Director after serving four years as Executive Director of the National New Play Network. Joel Moritz (Lighting Designer) is excited to be back with Olney Theatre Center for his third production. Recent credits include: Scarcity for Rattlestick Playwright’s Theatre, the production and lighting design for the new Blue Man Group show at Universal Studios in Florida, the National Tour for Blue Man Group, and Neville’s Island and Cinderella at Olney. Russell Parkman (Scenic Designer) has been teaching scenic design at Southern Methodist University for the past 12 years. He has also designed scenery and costumes in New York City, LORT regional theaters, and abroad. Most recently his work has been seen internationally at the Teater Ibsen in Norway with the productions A View from the Bridge, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and Molly Sweeney. Russell also designed an original flamenco opera Don Juan Flamenco which premiered in Seville, Spain at the Flamenco Biennale. The original musical Blind Lemon Blues, developed in Dallas, has played in Geneva and Paris. Three Sisters, adapted for the Teatro Popular in Bogata, Colombia, has played at theater festivals in South America. His recent US productions include the premiere of Lee Blessing’s adaptation of Heaven’s My Destination for the Cleveland Playhouse and the premiere of the Storm Large’s rock show Crazy Enough for Portland Center Stage. On Broadway he has worked on The Lion King, City of Angels, High Society, Meet Me In St. Louis among others. Amy Marshall (Managing Director) joined Olney Theatre Center in October of 2007. Ms. Marshall graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marquette University in 1991 and joined the staff of the Florentine Opera that same year. During her seven years as Production Director at the Florentine, she maintained a balanced production budget every year. In the summer of 2000, she accepted a position with the Milwaukee Ballet. Her enthusiasm for the art form led to her eventual promotion to Executive Director. Under Ms. Marshall’s leadership, the Milwaukee Ballet achieved a balanced budget for the four years she served as Executive Director. That trend has continued as she has lead Olney Theatre Center to a balanced budget for the past three years. In addition, due in large part to Ms. Marshall’s leadership, The Gazette for Politics and Business recognized Olney Theatre Center as one of the top 53 businesses in the state of Maryland in 2011 and 2012.
