A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dear friend of Olney Theatre Center, Lacerating wit, hot-button topics, overweening ambition and hyperarticulate characters: sounds like a recipe for one of off-Broadway’s hottest shows last season, and winner of the first Laurents-Hatcher award, The Submission by Jeff Talbott. The Submission, with its daring mix of contemporary themes and provocative subject matter, represents one stream of important programming for Olney Theatre Center: providing our audience with the most adventurous theater being written by a new generation of American playwrights. As the former Executive Director of the National New Play Network, I believe that playwrights are the chroniclers of our time: they view the world in a unique way and engage us in conversation about what they see through their artistry. Our fall play, the World Premiere of Rancho Mirage by Steven Dietz, is the next installment in this stream of programming. If your taste runs more towards the traditional, you’ll be particularly excited by what comes next: Patrick Hamilton’s Victorian-era thriller, Angel Street (which is the basis of the movie Gaslight) and our summer musical – DC’s first major revival in years of one of the most extraordinary musicals in history, A Chorus Line. We at Olney Theatre Center want to make sure everyone in our community has access to the best work, produced at the highest-level, from every corner of the theater world. I’m so glad you’re with us for The Submission and look forward to hearing what you think at Jason@olneytheatre.org. We’re going to start posting patron reviews on our website and I’d love to include your thoughts. All best and onward!

Jason Loewith, Artistic Director

ANGEL STREET (GASLIGHT)

By

PATRICK HAMILTON Directed by

JOHN GOING

T

he Victorian Thriller, first produced on the West End under the title Gaslight and filmed twice, Angel Street focuses on a seemingly normal couple, the Manninghams. Is the handsome Jack Manningham a caring husband – or is he discreetly trying to drive his young wife Bella into insanity under the guise of kindness? It takes an extraordinarily dedicated Scotland Yard detective, the aptly named Inspector Rough, to unravel this delightfully twisted thriller. (Recommended for ages 13 and up.)

This production is made possible in part by contributions from Kathleen Quinn.

FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT One of our jobs in society is to lead with empathy when dealing with each other. In crafting the relationships in the play, I hope the characters fight for as long as humanly possible to understand the other person. Speaking optimistically, I think it’s human nature that, on an individual basis, we tend to consider ourselves good people. And truly good people will, as long as they possibly can, think the best of the other person. The path of least resistance, of course, is to not fight that fight - and we see plenty of examples every day of that fight being lost. Right now it seems that television was invented as a delivery device to display that battle being lost on a minute-by-minute basis. But I believe in that fight. I honestly believe that making the effort to see the best in each other, making the effort to find the best way to articulate our point of view to whomever we are speaking in the kindest, clearest, most thoughtful way possible, is one of the only ways true progress can occur. And to keep the playing field level by also listening in the same way. Conflict breeds conflict. Empathy and clarity can only breed forward motion. It’s the only effective way to use our words to make things better - and better should always be the goal. It’s very Pollyana-ish, no question, and maybe not always possible, but what the heck? Let’s give it a shot. – Jeff Talbott, Playwright, The Submission

DRAMATURGICAL NOTES “Find better words.” This line cuts to the heart of Jeff Talbott’s The Submission, which challenges us to consider the importance of empathy in effective communication. One of the purposes of theatre is to foster understanding, to encourage spectator and actor to practice compassionate communication. As a longtime actor and an emerging playwright, Mr. Talbott has an intimate understanding of the theatre world and he uses it to his advantage in The Submission. Mr. Talbott tells the story of struggling playwright, Danny Larsen, who writes a poignant, honest play about a black family living in the projects. But Danny is a gay, middle-class, white man, who fears the disconnect between writer and subject will overshadow, and ultimately invalidate, his script. So what does he do? He submits the play under an “African-sounding” pen name. When it’s accepted for production at the Humana Festival—an American cornerstone of new works—issues of authenticity and cultural appropriation loom ominously. To avoid them, Danny hires a black actress, Emilie, to be his authorial stand-in. Suffice it to say, the plan doesn’t go well. Tensions mount between Danny and Emilie, who is offended by Danny’s theory that he can empathize with the black community based on his experience as a gay man. As their scheme unfolds, incendiary language and rising resentment build to an inevitable breaking point. Mr. Talbott asks difficult and uncomfortable questions: Is a rich, white male unqualified to write about a poor black female? Does the writer of a novel, film, or play need to be of the same racial, ethnic, or sexual background as his or her characters in order to write about them truthfully? The play provokes debate about unconscious racism and homophobia, and confronts timely issues—the limits of political correctness, the value of competing claims of victimhood, the question of whether bigotry is buried within all of us. At its core, The Submission is about language—the way words can get in the way of communication, and the power words can have, especially when used as weapons. As Danny says, “The world is a place that gets described by the words we create, the ways we put those words together to help ourselves and to, you know, hurt each other. But they are just words.” Rather than sit back, relax, and enjoy the show, this play compels us to lean forward, engage, and start listening to one another. – Meghan Twible, Education Fellow 301.924.3400

Mr. Loewith joins us as Artistic Director after serving four years as Executive Director of the National New Play Network. Amy Marshall (Managing Director) joined Olney Theatre Center in October of 2007. Ms.

Marshall graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marquette University in 1991 and joined the staff of the Florentine Opera that same year. During her seven years as Production Director at the Florentine, she maintained a balanced production budget every year. In the summer of 2000, she accepted a position with the Milwaukee Ballet. Her enthusiasm for the art form led to her eventual promotion to Executive Director. Under Ms. Marshall’s leadership, the Milwaukee Ballet achieved a balanced budget for the four years she served as Executive Director. That trend has continued as she has lead Olney Theatre Center to a balanced budget for the past three years. In addition, due in large part to Ms. Marshall’s leadership, The Gazette for Politics and Business recognized Olney Theatre Center as one of the top 53 businesses in the state of Maryland in 2011 and 2012.
