Footwear For The Island Lifestyle
Life on The Water’s Edge The connections found among people living at the water’s edge are endless, even when their homes are an ocean apart. Whether it’s the uniquely located Hawaiian Islands in the middle of the Pacific or the misty, forested shores and bays of the Pacific Northwest, people are bonded in so many ways by water and the deep traditions of a lifestyle shaped by their coastlines. At OluKai, we celebrate the active coastal lifestyle, the cultures it perpetuates, and all the relationships — from family to friends — fostered at the water’s edge. Our footwear is crafted to help you connect with others in these spaces, built to explore comfortably, in an array of terrains — and to find a sense of appreciation in doing so. Anywhere Aloha

Why Drop-In Heel?
Men’s Leather Shoes
Our signature Drop-In Heel® came straight from the Islands, a culture where you kick your shoes off at the door, a place where footwear is as easy and breezy as the lifestyle. This design feature, offered on most of our shoes, is a testament to that need for ease and versatility. Our unique collapsible heel allows easy transitions between a shoe and a slide. You can effortlessly slide your foot in and out for relaxed moments or flip up the heel when you mean “business.” It’s a design that also makes it feel like you’ve got two shoes in one, which is a plus during these indoor-outdoor cooler months.

Similar Strokes for Different Folks
by Beau Flemister
From Hawai‘i to the Pacific Northwest, coastal peoples touch (and are touched by) the ocean in profoundly varied yet connected ways. One truly amazing thing about living near the ocean is that we’re often experiencing the natural world with the same sense of awe that so many people before us once did, often, in similar ways, even in places thousands of miles apart. Some of that experience is sensory. Hearing the otherworldly sound of a whale song beneath the surface. Watching the sight of endless ocean stretching toward the horizon. The taste of sea spray flinging from canoe paddles. Some of that experience is deeper, this way of life on the water offering its people more of a spiritual and cultural bond. Whatever that experience might be, the ocean connects us inextricably. This connection, both modern and ancient, can be seen in the lifestyles, cultural practices, and even marine life shared between the Hawaiian Islands and the Pacific Northwest. Both places and their indigenous peoples have a long history of canoe paddling and living off their coastal waters’ fishing supplies. Even their respective relationships with whales have intertwined oral histories, not to mention, annual migratory path connections. The humpback whales breed in Hawai‘i each year — then travel up near the PNW to feed and raise their calves. “There are Indigenous people throughout the Salish Sea who consider Southern Resident orcas their relations in the water,” says Leigh Ann Gilmer, regional
director with the SeaDoc Society on Orcas Island, WA, which works to heal the Salish Sea. “There’s still so much we can learn from them.” Underwater, connections with these fascinating giants can be experienced similary, even off separate coastlines. “The first time I heard whales, what really hit me was the sound,” recalls Alina Abramovich, a Hawai‘i island resident and conservationist for Hawai‘i’s Natural Resources Conservation Services. “It’s hard to describe in words, it’s a lot more of a visceral feeling, but I feel like being around these animals that are so much bigger and so much more ancient than we are is just this really connecting and humbling experience.” Speaking with two Indigenous men who paddle canoe recreationally and for sport, though from very different places, had unsurprisingly similar feelings to articulate… “In our [Native Hawaiian] culture, the canoe is not a boat,” says Josiah Kalima-Padillio, an ocean guide from Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i Island. “It has a spirit of its own, so we treat it as kūpuna or an elder. Whenever the paddle hits the water, it’s you creating that bond and that relationship with the ocean and all your surroundings.” “So, to some, it might just look like we’re out on the water paddling a canoe, but for me, it’s building a relationship with the ocean, respecting my elder, and being in tune with my surroundings.” “For me, paddling canoe is like a calmness or a stress reliever, an outlet,”
describes Joe Rodriguez, a fisheries biologist from Skagit Valley, WA, who paddles traditional war canoes and races outrigger canoes. “When we go on the war canoe, we’re taught that we paddle for the ones who can’t paddle. We pray while we’re on the canoe, and when we paddle, our prayers are probably the strongest that they can be.” “Canoeing was a way of transportation for both Polynesians and Native Americans. We paddled upriver or downriver and even across the bay to go visit our relatives. The same with Polynesians. Sure, as time went on it gradually turned into racing, and Polynesians and Native Americans share that competitive bond. But I think more than a sport, paddling is a way of life. For both our cultures, it’s about having that respect for the water, the spirit of the canoe, and the ones who are paddling it.” In the end, the more connections uncovered on these coastlines and ways of life demonstrated by so many of the first peoples taking part in the waters off their shores, the “water’s edge,” so to speak, eventually blurs. “In Hawai‘i, being a voyaging culture, it was never considered to be isolated off in this little place," says Rebekah Ke‘alohi Wang, a Native Hawaiian from Hawai‘i Island who works for the non-profit, Hui Ho‘oniho. “Rather than an ‘isolation,’ I feel like it was like, no, we’re actually connected through the ocean and through the ways that we move through the ocean. “And that’s something not just people who live in Hawai‘i can experience, but people that live all over the world.” 19
