Project Narrative The JK’s house is a contemporary Baltimore townhouse, nested in the rejuvenated Calvert Street, Baltimore, Maryland. Located several blocks from Baltimore Penn/ Amtrak station, and in close proximity to downtown, JK House patio is envisaged to be both a respite and refuge for the owners and visitors in the urban environment. The owner wanted a patio/outdoor landscaping that is inviting, eye pleasing, and a serene extension of their interior living.
Master plan
The design builds on the assets found on the site and adjacent properties— concrete and timber fence, confine and tight backyard, and native plants. From onset, a decision was made to replicate the timber fence on the left side to cover the concrete fence on the right. To link the interior space with the exterior patio, a new entry door with glass transom above replaced the existing panel door to light up the interior living space. Two steps wrapped with stone pedestals for potter plants gradually introduce visitors to the patio. The resulting patio is rectilinear in shape, sandwiched between two sets of curvilinear shaped evergreen shrubs and flowering perennials, and unified by carefully selected materials, finishes, colors, planting scales, and details. Birch trees and trellis provide both screening/ privacy and shade afternoon sun along the left side. And two banks of evergreen shrubs and perennials work together to visually filter the urban context and reinforce a sense of enclosure. The surrounding context is pulled in to the patio with paving stones interspersed with grass to create a rhythmic repetitive pattern and direct traffic to the narrow enclosure leading to the HVAC outdoor unit.

Project Description Before, the existing backyard (top middle picture) was colorless, boring, featureless, and uninviting. The client wanted to create an outdoor environment to welcome and entertain friends and family. The initial brief for the patio was a gathering space for 30+ people, outdoor builtin grill, water fountain, trellis, and privacy from neighbors. Cost was a dominant factor as well. To accommodate all the client’s needs, the concept was to have two dominant large cubes or squares separated by 2-3 steps at 45 degrees to create triangular planting pockets. And two water features were placed at the intersection of the squares. The planting selection was on the bases of color, texture, architectural form, local nursery, and low maintenance. During construction and at client’s request, the two water features were eliminated and replaced with a large rectangular planting bed. Also, the deck, outdoor built-in grill, and landscape lighting were suspended and moved into the second phase of the project to accommodate cost.
