Switch your bank account

Simply switch your current account to a First Direct 1st Account and they’ll give you £100! It’s a great account with outstanding customer service - Jasmine banks with them for this reason. Do note, though, that you have to have at least £1,000 per month coming into the account to get it for free so it’s not right for everybody. If you don’t like the account after you’ve tried it, First Direct will give you £100 and help you get set up with another account elsewhere! They are that confident that you will stay with them. If the First Direct option doesn’t appeal, you can also make up to 3% cashback on your household bills when you switch your current account to Santander. Use their simple online switcher service to move to their 123 Current Account, and you can begin to rack up your cashback. Their account pays up to 3% interest on balances from £1,000 and offers a free arranged overdraft for four months. Make the switch here. Money made: £100. Time taken: 10 minutes to fill in the form for switching. While you’re at it, why not take control of the rest of your finances? Here’s what to do:

Sort out your savings If you’ve got money in the bank, check you’re earning the most interest possible on it. There are new deals coming on the market all the time. Always keep vigilant and make sure you get the best deal. For lots more information and ideas, see our full article on the best savings accounts.

Deal with your debt Could you switch to cheaper and better credit cards and loans? Do you remember to check your credit record before going for really cheap loans or 0% credit card deals? If your record isn’t great then you are likely to be turned down by the better deals which could, in turn, make it harder for you to get other loans (lenders get nervous when other companies turn you down). Make money from online surveys

Online surveys are a great way to make quick cash while you’re in front of the computer. If you have some free time in your lunch break or a spare half an hour in the evenings, why not fill in a few online surveys and make quick money? It’s simple, effective and you could win cash prizes every now and then. You could make around £6 an hour doing online surveys, and you may be asked to take part in focus groups which pay as much as £80 an hour. On top of that you sometimes get the chance to do product testing (where you’ll often get to keep the product) and earn extra cash by referring your friends! Money made: £6-80. Time taken: One hour.

Super survey sites These survey sites won’t make you £80 in an hour, but we love them at Moneymagpie as they’re quick, easy and fun to complete. Toluna Sign up to Toluana and get an additional 500 points for recommending a friend (as long as they complete their sign-up). You can earn between 1,000 and 50,000 points per survey depending on length, and they are sent directly to you. The great thing about Toluna is that you have other opportunities to collect points by doing smaller polls or giving an 80-word opinion about something – perfect if you’ve got a spare 15 minutes on your lunch break. You need 80,000 points to convert into the lowest £15 voucher which you can spend in a variety of places like Amazon or M&S. It’s reasonable to assume that this would take two or three months to reach, depending on the survey screenings and how active you are on the website. Another great feature of Toluna is you can sign up to become a tester which means you’ll get free goodies to try out each week. In the past these things have included hair gel, lip gloss and pots of caviar…seriously!

Warning! Beware! There are a lot of sharks in the business and you have to be careful what you sign up for. Some even have the cheek to try to get you to pay to join – ignore these companies. As a rule of thumb, the more lucrative or tempting it sounds, the more likely it is to be a waste of time. You certainly shouldn’t have to pay to join. If you don’t fancy receiving these we recommend that you set up a separate email account just for your online surveys. This way your personal account will be left alone, and all your survey-related emails will be kept in one place. For more information read our full guide to online surveys.

Exchange your trash for cash

We chuck so much stuff away each year that could be making us money - big money... more than £80 an hour in some cases. Have you got an old mobile phone kicking about? It could net you anything from a few pounds to £200 or more. See what yours is worth using our mobile phone recycling tool. As well as cash, you can also choose to exchange it for vouchers for great stores like Debenhams, Argos or M&S. It’s probably the easiest money you’ll ever make. While you’re at it, why not get paid for your old printer cartridges? Cash For Cartridges pay up to £4.50 for your empty ink cartridges. You’ll get paid more for ‘virgin’ cartridges (those that haven’t been refilled) than ‘non-virgin’ cartridges (those that have been refilled). Ink cartridges take over 1,000 years to decompose, so recycling them is the environmentally friendly thing to do. Why not let people know that you’re keen on recycling them and get your friends, family and colleagues to pass on their old cartridges to you? That way they won’t end up in landfill, and going through Cash For Cartridges will net you a tidy sum of money to boot! Why not sell some of your old books online at Green Metropolis for £3 a pop? It’s so easy to do: just log on, enter the book’s ISBN number (check the back of the book) and describe its condition. Then there’s eBay, of course, which allows you to sell almost anything. Some people have a really good business selling things on eBay - sometimes they’re buying items elsewhere (maybe collectibles they’re knowledgeable about or vintage clothes) and selling them for a profit on the site. Although you pay a small fee to list and sell your goods, you know that because of the site’s popularity (eBay UK has over 14 million active users) you’re advertising to a huge audience. Before eBay came along, a car boot sale was the best place to sell your second-hand wares. Car boot sales are not only a fun day out, they’re a great way to make money from all your unwanted items, and you can pretty much sell anything you like! It’s the perfect opportunity to get rid of everything you no longer use and turn it into cash. With decent sales patter and reasonably-priced items (car booters only want bargains, of course!), you can realistically expect to earn £80 an hour at a busy car boot sale. To find your nearest care boot sale, CarBootJunction should be your first port of call. Then read our guide to having a successful car boot sale. Money made: £4-200 for your phone, £4.50 for each cartridge, £3 for each book. Time taken: Five minutes for phone, 20 minutes for cartridges (allowing for packing time), 10 minutes for books. 8

Reclaim your lost money

There’s over £15 billion lying unclaimed in Britain’s banks and building societies – that’s an average of £312 for every adult in the UK! You’d be surprised how many of us have savings accounts, insurance policies, shares or pension schemes that we’ve lost track of or forgotten about. Luckily, you can track down your past accounts for free with Mylostaccount to see if you have any lying dormant. Another great facility is the Unclaimed Assets Register, run by credit agency Experian. There you can look for financial assets you might have lost – or didn’t even know about (if you were left them by a relative). These could include life policies, pensions, investments, accounts and savings. Of course, there’s no guarantee you’ll have any lost accounts or assets, but it’s well worth taking a few minutes of your time to check – the average Mylostaccount claim is £90. While you’re at it, why not grab hold of some other bits of cash lying about in investments, pensions and just plain coins? Here are some ideas: •

Get on your hands and knees. Trawl through the nooks and crannies of your home and you might find you’re in the 88% of people who reckon they’ve got at least a tenner in small change lying around in jars, tins and down the back of the sofa.

Sieve for savings. Look through your boxes of papers to see if you’ve got old building society and bank pass books. If you find them, cash the money in.

Get your bank involved. Most banks will search for details of any accounts you might have with them if you pop into a branch and fill out a special form.

Reclaim money from your telecoms provider According to Ofcom, you could be missing out on free money from your last telecoms provider. In fact, Ofcom has gathered data suggesting that over two years there was around 2 million consumers who have left their communications provider, without claiming at least £10 million owed to them. The money owed could be for having paid for line rental in advance or for promotional credits that you may have been given during your contract. People often don’t know that they are owed money by their landline, mobile, broadband or pay TV provider. Of course, the different companies have various ways of giving you the money back (if you ask them). Therefore, Ofcom has published a really

Take up dog walking

Did you know that dog walking can make you serious money? Some people even quit their day jobs to start dog-walking businesses, with today’s typical going rate being £10-15 per dog, per hour. That means you could make £60 in an hour if you walked four at once! Some owners have been quoted £25 an hour! Then you can make extra cash dog-sitting, if you’re around during the day. Really, if you like dogs you can make good money right now. In London you can see people walking up to ten dogs at a time. That’s potentially £150 an hour! However, many boroughs won’t allow walkers to take more than four dogs at a time so check with your local council to see what you can do in your area. There’s nothing to stop you scouting out work yourself but you may find it easier to secure dog-walking jobs (at least to begin with) by signing up with a specialist agency such as Animal Aunts. This is a good way to get started, though most agencies will take a cut of your earnings. Having a good reputation is key to getting regular work. You could consider registering with a national association or organisation for dog walkers. For example, NarpsUK offers members a profile on their website, and clients can write reviews and give feedback about your work. However, to join costs £120, then you have to pay for a years full membership which is £69.99 – so this is only really necessary for those wanting to set up a full-time dog-walking business. Don’t forget to make sure you have adequate insurance in place. You need to ensure the pet is covered (in case it’s injured in your care) and have public liability cover (in case it should bite someone or run out into the road and cause a car accident, for example). Have a look at Pet Business Insurance, as they offer a policy that covers both the pet and public liability insurance in one package. You can find out a lot more about how to be a dog walker - and a dog minder - with our article on making money walking dogs. Money made: £10-60. Time taken: One hour.

Rent out things you don’t use

If you’re working and have a busy family life but need some extra cash, it can be hard to think of ways to make money. Something that many people don’t consider is renting out their possessions. Everything you own is worth something, even the clutter in your garden shed or the garden shed itself can be a money-making asset.

Rent your car This is perhaps not advisable if your car is your pride and joy, and your own family members get shouted at if they dare to wear shoes or breathe on the windows when you give them a lift. If you’re a little more laid back, and have times when your car is just sat in the garage, why not make money from it? There are sites that allow you to register your car for someone to hire, or sign up to rent available cars in your area. Have a look at our article on renting out your car to pay for it for more information on how a car can be a money-making purchase.

Rent your clothes If you’re looking to rent clothes, have a look at Girl Meets Dress, a website featuring designer dresses and accessories for all occasions, saving you an expensive trip to the shops and ensuring you never have to be seen in the same outfit twice.

Rent anything! Websites like RentNotBuy let you rent out pretty much anything you can think of – video cameras, baby accessories, gardening equipment, you name it – to people who pay you for the privilege, before returning the rented object back to you (you can arrange a deposit in case any damage occurs to your belongings). This can be a nice little money-spinner; instead of selling those old garden tools or the TV you never use, you can rent them out again and again. Some examples of what you could make taken from RentNotBuy are below: •

Pushchair and baby bed = £17 weekly revenue

Xbox games console = £25 weekly revenue

Trampoline = £50 weekly revenue

Triathlon bicycle = £60 weekly revenue

Rent out your spare space

You can rent out your unused space (such as your cellar, attic, garden or any disused land) for free on Spareground. Depending on the type and location of the space, this can make you a tidy sum. If you live in an area where parking is at a premium and you have a driveway or garage available where someone can park then you’re sitting on a goldmine. For example, if you live close to a train station, your parking space will be especially attractive to commuters. List your space on Parklet or Parkatmyhouse and you could earn up to £500 a month. Why not make money from your garden by hiring it out as allotments? If you have a big garden and no time (or interest) to keep it going, make some extra cash by renting it out to one of the many people who want an allotment and can’t get one. Mark off one or more areas of your garden – ensuring that there are access points for potential users – then advertise plots for free on Gumtree. You could easily earn yourself £80 per year with a few plots for less than an hour’s work. You can find out how to do this (including how to set up a contract with the people renting from you) in our allotment article. And if you have a spare room, you can really rake in some extra cash by renting it out. You can earn up to £4,250 a year (tax free!) under the Government’s rent-a-room scheme. A good place to start if you’re looking to let is Easyroommate – it’s free to post an ad. If you don’t want a lodger in your house the whole week, have a look at MondaytoFriday. It only features people – typically commuting professionals – who want to rent during the working week, returning to their home for the weekends. Also, you could let a room out to foreign students who are over here to learn the language. That’s quite a good option because they tend not to stay for longer than six weeks at a time so if you hate them, you can tell yourself you won’t have to put up with them for long! Get in touch with your local language schools and get yourself put on their list of accommodation suppliers. In some parts of the country such as coastal towns and London, there’s a shortage of people offering accommodation so you could find it easy to let a room. Find out more in our article here.

Letting a room – pros and cons Pros •

Most obviously, this is an easy way of making money without actually doing any work. The cash you earn can ultimately help towards mortgage costs or any other outgoings.

If you screen potential lodgers properly, you’re likely to end up with someone who will fit into your lifestyle and who you will get along with easily.

If you live on your own, a lodger may be excellent company and open up a whole new social life and circle of friends.

It’s much easier to remove unsuitable lodgers from your property than it is to remove full tenants, as they do not have the security of tenure. Therefore, should it not work out, and you have outlined details in the contract, it is easy to get them to leave.

Cons •

If you like your privacy and can’t bear the idea of sharing your bathroom and kitchen with a stranger, this is probably not for you.

If you have young children and don’t like the idea of having a stranger in the house, then hold out until a distant relative or friend of a friend needs a room.

Lodgers do have a right to occupy the other rooms in the house and also to invite guests over, so if you’re not a people person this might be difficult.

Money made: Anything from a one-off payment of £40-50 to £4,000+ a year. Time taken: 10 minutes to create a listing online.

Be a tutor

You can make at least £80 an hour if you can tutor in A level, or higher, standard in maths, economics, business or some languages, particularly if you’re working in London or the Home Counties. With other subjects, at other levels, you’re more likely to get £15-40 an hour. However, if you’re very good at a subject, and particularly if you’re a graduate in it, tutoring can be an excellent way of making money without too much effort. You can even tutor online now so you don’t have to leave your home to do it. Obviously you need to have some knowledge to get work as a tutor but you don’t necessarily have to be a qualified teacher. If you have a degree then your skills in that subject will still be sought after. University students who are still studying for their degree can make themselves some well-needed cash this way too. One way to get work is to advertise on the internet. Sites like Schoolstrader are a great option. Schoolstrader covers 30,000 independent primary and secondary schools across the UK and Ireland. Placing an ad here is completely free and it’ll stay up on the site for three months. Alternatively, you could work for an agency – where you’re likely to earn more, but they often have strict requirements about your educational background. They’re unlikely to employ those without teaching qualifications or a first-class degree. Over the past three years Bright Young Things, a tutoring business based in London, has been recruiting high-flying students. They said that some of their Manchester graduates were earning over £100 for four hours teaching through their online one-on-one service. A chemistry graduate tutor, who did not want to be named, said “Last year I earned enough money to spend throughout my last summer before I got a proper job. It even allowed me to afford to get unpaid work experience at a newspaper. I could not recommend it more.” You can also work as an online tutor. Tutors can speak to children remotely using a Skype headset and work using a virtual whiteboard. You will

earn less this way, but of course you don’t have to consider travel costs or materials. Find out more about how to be a tutor and make serious money. Money made: £80 an hour for maths, business, economics and languages. Time taken: An hour for the lesson plus travel.
