HOANIB SKELETON COAST

THE CAMP

HOANIB RIVER

M O E W E B AY

Due to open in August 2014, Hoanib Skeleton Coast is still under construction. With only eight rooms, one of which is a family room, this promises to be an exclusive, personal experience. Tents are bedouin style and the entire camp is powered by a solar array.

One of the ephemeral rivers of Namibia, the Hoanib River stretches to the coast at Moewe Bay, through the Hoanib floodplains. Home to desert adapted elephant, giraffe and even lion, should you be lucky! Augur Buzzard are plentiful in the floodplain.

Close to the mouth of the Hoanib River, with a population of 60, Moewe Bay consists of a conservation office, police presence and desalination plant for inhabitants. There is a fascinating informal museum with flotsam from wreck and items of natural history.

THE WRECKS

DUNES

ANIMALS IN CAMP

For those going to the coast, there are several wrecks to visit. Close to Moewe Bay, the wreck of the Suiderkus and as one travels North into the Skeleton Coast National Park, the wreck of the Karimona and the remains of a Ventura bomber. Fabulous for photography

Proceeding up the Hoanib floodplains after landing at Moewe Bay, the surrounding landscape suddeny changes to golden dune fields. After a visit to Oasis spring there are roaring dunes to drive and the most inspiring, stark vistas.

Animals, or rather elephant, visit the camp daily. With a waterhole 100m from the rooms, Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp offers an unique opportunity to view these equally unique animals at your leisure.
