PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Your Vote Really Does Count! PRESIDENT JOHN ERWIN

This past year has been difficult, to say the least. If you were to ask me a year ago where I thought we would be by the end of summer 2021, I would never have imagined we would still be in the depths of this pandemic. I would have never imagined we would still be in a place of reevaluating, daily, whether it is safe to meet and network in-person. But, as in life, we adjust, we compromise and surrender to the ebb and flow we are faced with. It’s important that we all do our part to keep our community safe and healthy and businesses open. As President of an association like OMB, I feel the pressure of trying to lead the best I possibly can. To navigate and to make decisions on behalf of our members and staff, that will keep us safe, yet still allow us to do what we do best: network, advocate, and to provide affordable housing to our community.

LOOKING AHEAD - meetings & events OCTOBER 4 - 11:00am BIAW Health Trust Information Virtual Zoom Meeting

One constant in our lives, even during a pandemic, is "election season.” The Affordable Housing Council (TAHC), OMB’s political action committee, has been hard at work again this year, interviewing local candidates to understand their stance on "hot" issues and, most importantly, to ensure they are aligned with, and supportive of, OMB’s mission. TAHC focuses on endorsing candidates who understand and value the impact of the home-building industry and small business on our local and state economy. We know how politically involved many of our members are and we hope that you will use this as a guide to research and choose the candidates you plan to vote for. I can't stress enough the need for each and every one of us to VOTE. Locally we have the opportunity to make a huge difference in the future of our industry. Please utilize the Voters Guide provided in this issue on pages 9-11 for the list of candidates endorsed by The Affordable Housing Council.

EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S MESSAGE

time to refocus and finish the year strong. EXECUTIVE OFFICER ANGELA WHITE

It’s that time of year when the morning air Feels crisp, and fall is right around the corner. As much as I love summer, it’s always a great time to refocus and finish the year strong. OMB has been getting back to in person meetings and events. As I have said before, this last year has been a rollercoaster ride for everyone. COVID-19 has affected many industries in ways we couldn’t even imagine, including the building industry. According to the recent NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index, nationwide builder confidence dropped to the lowest reading since July of 2020. This is due to higher construction costs and supply shortages. Building materials have increased by 19.4% in the past 12 months according to the Producer Price Index (PPI). As I am talking with members, I am hearing stories of homes that should be completed, and of septic installs sitting, both due to waiting on products needed for completion or a lack of labor. NAHB’s Chief Economist Robert Dietz has said that at least the production bottleneck should start returning to closer to normal in the next few months which is good news. OMB has continued to educate elected officials on the outcomes from this pandemic. On the good news front the BIG Home & Garden Show was back this year with a new date and location! Or as we called it

the "not-so" BIG Home & Garden Show as we did have less vendors than in past years due to timing and lack of labor to staff booths. The vendors who came were excited and ready to greet the public! David Scalabrini, Regional Event Marketing Manager from Gutter Helmet, said in an email to OMB staff, “Thank you to you and the rest of the team that helped to put on this great event, even with all of the challenges that we all face during this time. We actually came out of the show with the same average of good appointments booked that we would get pre COVID, so all in all it looks to be a good show for us. I have the dates for next year on our event calendar and we look forward to being there.”  This Show is one of the great services that OMB offers the industry as a way to promote business. Thank you to the work of the Home Show Committee led by Chair Greg Amendala of John Erwin Remodeling and Custom Homes and Co-Chair Rusty Ruiz of Hung Right Doors and OMB’s staff. Last but not least, take a look at page 9-11 to read about the candidates who have been endorsed by The Affordable Housing Council. These candidates have been evaluated and deemed housing, development, and business friendly by the Council. If you would like to get involved with TAHC reach, out to Chair Debbi Boyd or myself. Thank you for being a member!

Careers in Construction

October is Careers in Construction Month Recognize contributions made by the professionals working in construction, instill a sense of pride in the industry, increase awareness and foster a positive career image. October is officially “Careers in Construction Month,” and the purpose is to increase public awareness of the opportunities available on construction trade professions. You can choose any month, week or day that works for you. The most important thing is for local and state associations and members to do something each calendar year. Ongoing efforts are important to achieve your goal of increasing the number of professional construction related employees in your area. The goal is to get involved in your community to help increase public awareness of the opportunities available in construction careers, inspire a positive image of all construction trades professions, and instill a sense of pride in the industry. To meet future workforce demands, educators and employers need to reach out to the next generation of construction craft professionals. It is through industry and education partnerships that students get first-hand work experience. Here a few ideas and activities that you could consider to help spread the message of Careers In Construction in your community! 8 • Chalk Line

Activities WALK AND LEARN Coordinate a walk to get children thinking about the built environment. Help students understand how construction affects every aspect of their lives. Explain the various jobs involved in building the things you see on your walk.

HUNT FOR KNOWLEDGE Organize a construction treasure hunt in your neighborhood. Have your students walk a prearranged course around the community and search for answers to questions about the built environment.

OPEN UP YOUR SITE Open your construction site and host a field trip. Arrange for students to tour the site and gather firsthand information on what it takes to have a successful career in construction.

BUILD A RESUME Help students prepare for a career in construction by coordinating a resume building session. Provide interview and resume tips.

VOTERS GUIDE

The Following Candidates have been endorsed by the Affordable Housing Council (TAHC), OMB’s Political Action CommitteE. TAHC focuses on endorsing candidates who understand and value the impact of the home-building industry and small business on our local and state economy.

Robbi Kessler Olympia City Council Position #2 I would like to see a more inclusive city government. We must have objective measurements of progress the public can track. Transparent governance will help with all issues facing the City. I have experience working with governing bodies at multiple levels of government, drafting laws, budgeting, and working with government officials. I am a licensed attorney in the State of Washington with a broad base of legal training and specific professional experience that is relevant to serving on the City Council. Olympia will benefit from having a voice on City Council that is a minority, has a law degree, has legal experience related to governance, and is invested in Olympia. I respectfully request your vote.

Like you, I expect our city council to provide practical and commonsense solutions to our community’s opportunities and problems. But for the last 10 years the city council simply asks residents to sacrifice more and expect less. We need change in 2021. As your next city councilmember, I will listen, collaborate, and work to address our affordable housing crisis; triage those experiencing homelessness and address upstream causes; and revitalize our downtown. I will work hard for a cleaner, safer, more vibrant Olympia. Together we will plan smartly, encourage density, sustain our neighborhoods and small businesses, provide diverse housing options for all needs, and protect our shorelines and green spaces.
