cannot believe that it has already been a year and I am now sitting here writing my last article for Chalk Line Magazine as the President of OMB. It has been an amazing year of overall achievements and success - from the Mazama Pocket Gopher progress to the growing popularity of our second annual Chefs on Tour and seventeenth annual Tour of Homes. As the building industry continues to soar so does the significance of Olympia Master Builders and its members. Looking ahead, I am beyond excited for the future of OMB, and look forward to the growth in membership and community support coming our way. We have fresh new

I also want to take a minute to reinforce the importance of voting. Election time is upon us and every home builder, remodeler, trade partner ─ and everyone else in our great industry ─ should make sure we are registered and eligible to vote Nov. 8. On pages 10-11 of this issue of Chalk Line, look for the list of candidates endorsed by The Affordable Housing Council. Each candidate was asked questions that help the TAHC members understand their view on the construction industry’s importance to a healthy economy, economic development, taxes, fees and utility rates, and balancing housing needs with the environment. This is one of the many benefits of OMB membership and I ask that you exercise your right to vote, and cast your ballots for the TAHC endorsed candidates, all of which have the local building industry in their best interest. As I bid farewell, I leave you with this: I believe in OMB and the mission of providing affordable housing to all economic segments of society. I believe that the work we do as an organization will benefit this society as a whole. Working together with local elected officials and giving back to the community is the key to OMB’s success.

A Special Shout Out to John Erwin Remodeling and ProBUILD! When John Erwin received the message from OMB that a longtime OMB member was in need of help building an entry ramp, John gladly accepted the job. John then made a few calls himself, and without hesitation, had materials donated by ProBUILD that same day. Within days, a beautiful, new entry ramp was built and ready for use.

This is the final issue of Chalk Line Magazine for 2017, and I think we can all look back on the year with great pride. It has been filled with many successes!

Olympia Master Builders (OMB) is built on the mission of providing affordable housing for all economic segments of society, and it is made up of a diverse group of people who agree that creating a local, state and national climate that business can thrive in is a top priority. Association leadership, from the Board of Directors, to committee chairs and committee members, to OMB staff keep this priority top of mind always, and it shows. The positive visibility of OMB in the community has continued to increase. The government affairs program is thriving and active. OMB is regularly attending local government meetings and provides input that is making a difference. One example of this is the City of Lacey reaching out to OMB to provide input when they were considering raising fees. The government affairs committee hosted Lacey staff for discussion on several occasions, and OMB’s Government Affairs Director, Joel Baxter attended a work session and planning commission meeting. In the end, this work resulted in a fair fee structure.
This is also a great spot to second President, Ron Deering's request to take a look at the list of local candidates endorsed by The Affordable Housing Council (TAHC) on pages 10-11. The members of TAHC are committed to endorsing candidates that believe in OMB’s mission and are committed to developing a thriving local economy. Voting, and spreading the word about candidates, is a great way for you to make a difference in your local business climate. The year has been filled with several successful events and meetings. Both of OMB’s public events, the BIG Home & Garden Show and the Tour of Homes/Chefs on Tour were well attended. These events raise OMB’s visibility in the community, and promote the quality workmanship of the membership. Kudos to John Erwin, 2017 BIG Home & Garden Chair and Karen McClennen, 2017 Tour of Homes Chair for their solid leadership. Looking forward to 2018, I am committed to focus on membership retention and growth, which will continue to increase OMB’s ability to focus on the mission of providing affordable housing for all economic segments of society.
