Make Mornings Less Hectic.. Many families find the rush is on to make it to school and work on time each morning. Feeling rushed in the morning is a recipe for added stress. Rushing through things is a poor way to begin a day, and those feelings of uneasiness can put a damper on the rest of the day. Making mornings less hectic involves a few different strategies that parents and kids can easily incorporate into their daily routines. • Wake up slightly earlier, even if itʟs just 15 to 20 minutes. A few extra minutes each morning can make you feel more relaxed and make for a smooth start. • Get some work done the night before. Prepare lunches, lay your clothes, gas up the car, etc. • Ease back into a routine, begin going to bed earlier and start waking up earlier. • Prep backpacks in the evening, sign paperwork, check assignments, etc. • Opt for school lunch a few times, give yourself a day off from lunch detail. • Have quick breakfast foods available. • Carpool whenever possible. Mornings can be tricky when family members are getting ready for school and work at the same time. By practicing a few daily rituals, itʟs possible to curb the rush and start the day happier and more relaxed.

Recognizing Cyberbullying ... Before social media became so prevalent, instances of bullying were somewhat easy to recognize. However, with a good majority of children now engaged in social media, bullying may not be so readily apparent. According to statistics from the i-SAFE foundation, more than half of adolescents and teens have been bullied online, and about the same number have engaged in cyberbullying. More than 80 percent of teens use a mobile phone regularly, making it a common medium for repeated cyberbullying. Cyberbullying takes place through electronic technology and differs from traditional forms of bullying. Cyberbullying can occur via text messaging, blogging, updates to social media sites and/or phone conversations. Those who engage in cyberbullying can create aliases and accounts under false names, allowing them to engage in bullying behavior. As a result, tracking down bullies can be challenging. There are some things that parents and children can do to help put a stop to such unfortunate instances. * Hold back on purchasing a smartphone or choose one with very limited features. * Adolescents and teens should feel comfortable talking with their parents without the fear of reprimand. Otherwise, they may hide instances of cyberbullying. * Teens should be made aware that cyberbullying is a very real occurrence and is not just other kids "having fun" or "joking." * Parents can monitor and limit their children's personal accounts and computer usage. * When online, children should be advised not to share personal information. Keep passwords secret and to never give out pertinent personal information. * Teens who have been bullied can keep evidence of the bullying and may benefit from talking with a counselor. Cyberbullying is a growing concern for educators and parents and has far-reaching implications.

Back To School

Students are periodically tested to gauge their progress on a variety of subjects. Although testing can be an effective way to determine a student's understanding of a given subject, not every student performs well on tests. Test-taking comes easily for some but not so for others. Nerves or trouble concentrating can foil the best students. However, there are ways for students to improve their test-taking skills. Prior to a test, make sure you eat and get enough rest. While it may be tempting to pull an "all-nighter," you will not perform well on the test if you are tired from having studied all night. Review the material and put the main ideas or formulas onto a sheet that can be quickly reviewed. Review it many times and then put it away. Have a good meal, relax and try to get at least eight hours of sleep. On the day of the test, wake up and arrive on time or even a few minutes early for your class. Make sure you have the supplies needed for the test. This may include pens or pencils, a calculator, a textbook if you are allowed. Have a watch available so that you can pace yourself during the test. Avoid using a mobile phone during the test, as the teacher may misinterpret that as cheating. Try to remain positive through the test. If you feel yourself getting nervous, take a few deep breaths and regroup. * Do the easiest problems first. If you do not know a question, skip it and move on. There may be clues later on in the test that help you go back and answer skipped questions. * Always read the entire question. Skimming could find you missing important instructions. * Look for words that may help you determine the answer, such as "all,""never" or "none." They may present clues to the answer. * If there is time, go back and look over the test. Make sure all questions have been answered and check for any careless mistakes. Preparing well for a test, remaining calm and checking over your work can help students who struggle with test-taking do their best.
