he Face of Omaha is rapidly changing.

Our city has evolved from a small riverside town to the great and growing city we are today. Our ability to affect change, embrace it, and improve it, is remarkable. We are a city of the future.

Omaha is recognized as a business-friendly community, as a nationally-renowned medical care, education and research center, and a destination for conventions, events and getaways. We are proud of our growing reputation as the Silicon Prairie, and the host city for major sports events; the College World Series; the Olympic Swim Trials; and the Creighton Bluejays, the 2020 Big East basketball champions. The face of Omaha is diverse. We value opportunities created in an inclusive community. We are a city of great promise, with a strong and vibrant future. CITY OF OMAHA 1819 FARNAM ST. Who are the FACES of Omaha?

F

aces of Omaha is an annual sponsored publication that we created in 2016 to introduce the “faces” of local industry leaders and experts. These profiles span across the community—from movie theater owners to marketing mavens. What makes Faces of Omaha (now in its fifth edition) so exclusive is that only one person and company per business category is allowed to participate. In the publishing industry, this sort of publication is known as “native advertising.” Native advertising is a unique form of sponsored content produced by editorial staff in conjunction with advertisers. The end result is this enjoyable and readable book that highlights Omaha’s legitimate business leaders. Everyone featured in the book is truly the “face” of their field. Our sales team spent considerable time cultivating this list to ensure that we showcase only the best. These are the faces of people who have made Omaha the thriving metropolis that it is today. In 2019, Omaha was voted No. 1 in “Best Metro Areas for Millennials” by RealtyHop and No. 2 in “Top 10 Best Small Cities” by Resonance. The following 88 pages introduce people and companies that are the best in the area for their respective areas of expertise. These people stand ready to serve their community.

N

o doubt about it, Omaha does not coast.

Case in point: Coming together when the most pervasive pandemic in a century gripped the globe. Thanks to a can-do spirit, and a commitment to collaboration, this region is emerging stronger than ever before.

Fueled by grit and ingenuity, Greater Omaha is also powered by a reputation as a renaissance region, with a historically resilient business community. Together, we’ve weathered many storms unscathed. The strength of our regional economy—prior to the recent global situation—meant a strong foundation for growth, even in crisis. At the heart of that foundation lies the formula for our ongoing success: You. And the commitment you confirm every day to your employees, customers, and suppliers. While we still have work to do to make this a place where everyone can climb the economic ladder and reach prosperity, your commitment ensures progress towards that goal every day. Thank you for joining us as we champion a thriving business community and a prosperous region.” We don’t coast. We climb. We ascend. We soar. We are Omaha. ddy’s is Omaha’s premier sports bar, and the atmosphere and menu of each location is carefully considered with that in mind. No detail is too small—from the position of a television screen to a comfortable chair cushion to the ambient noise level, all elements are chosen with the goal of making every visit great.

Owner Tim Addison leads his staff in the pursuit of excellence. “It’s a team effort,” he said. “I depend on my staff to deliver the exceptional experience that makes us special.” Addy’s also gives back to the community by supporting countless nonprofit fundraisers and by sponsoring local schools, athletic teams, and community organizations, including boys and girls youth organizations. “We love being a part of the neighborhood; we are in this business because we love seeing our neighbors every day,” Addison said. A new downtown location— with the same focus on details, quality and community that Addy’s patrons love—is expected to open later this year at 10th and Dodge streets, joining the existing locations at 144th and Q streets, 144th and West Maple Road, and 204th and Pacific Streets. e started this small family business over 30 years ago when we borrowed $1,000 on three different credit cards to raise a down payment for our first theater, and we have never stopped trying to create the perfect movie-going experience,” Aksarben Cinema owner Bill Barstow said. “We want to simply bring the best we have to every community we operate in.”

The family’s newest theatre opens in the summer. ACX CINEMA 12+ at 204th and Q streets will feature the largest commercial screen in the metro area (70 feet wide and almost five stories high) plus Dolby Atmos sound, laser projection, heated reclining seats, in-theater dining options, and an outdoor auditorium. The cinema complex’s Backlot Kitchen & Pizza restaurant will offer a full menu that includes Detroit-style pizza. “This is a true family-ownedand-operated company, and our family extends far beyond just us; it includes every one of our dedicated employees who help us create our special brand of the big-screen moviegoing experience,” Barstow said. “We love Omaha, and we will see you at the movies!” AKSARBEN CINEMA 2110 S. 67TH ST. ALLERGY & ASTHMA Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Associates, P.C.

A

s an increasing number of Americans realize they are suffering chronic ailments, many are turning to restrictive diets, hoping to curb inflammation. The guesswork can lead to frustration, difficulty in reaching an accurate diagnosis, and a stressful game of diet trial-and-error trying to figure it out.

Allergens, air quality, and genetics all play a role in immune responses. When something isn’t right, guessing isn’t enough. The expert physicians and PAs at Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Associates help patients identify the cause of immune response. The internet offers advice on immune and allergy issues, but lacks the necessary personal component to make an individual health assessment. || 8 ||

long with typical menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and mood swings, a variety of symptoms may signal hormone deficiencies. “Many of our hormone patients come in with low energy, brain fog, headaches and poor sleep,” said Hilary Muhle. “If you’re not feeling 100%, it can affect your function at work and at home.”

Allure Health & Med Spa has been voted First Place for Female Hormone Replacement in Best of Omaha three years in a row. They administer bioidentical hormones to help women feel their best. “Bioidentical hormones are plant-based, making them safer and often more effective at controlling symptoms and even preventing disease over time,” Muhle explained. Tiny pellets that are customized using lab tests and symptoms are placed beneath the skin and gradually absorbed by the body. “When we help someone feel better and they see the long-term improvement in their quality of life, it’s absolutely rewarding,” Muhle commented, “Clients will often cry in their initial consultation because they think they’ve exhausted every option available to them, and at their follow-up they’ll cry again because they didn’t realize how much better they could feel.” ALLURE HEALTH & MED SPA 13939 GOLD CIRCLE, SUITE 100 OMAHA, NE 68144 402.881.3638 ALLUREHEALTHMED.COM

ntil about four years ago, my practice was evenly divided between representing employers and representing workers,” Will Andres recalled. “Today my focus is on representing workers, but having that background has given me a better understanding of the whole process so I can make sure my clients receive the benefits they’re entitled to.” Most of the injured workers who come to Andres Law Offices are employed in fields that involve physical labor, such as trucking and construction. “Our contingency fee policy means you owe no attorney fee unless we obtain benefits for you,” Andres noted. “Lots of people try to deal with this on their own, but that just doesn’t work. You need an attorney in your corner when you’re dealing with something as complicated as workers’ compensation laws.” “If we’re not getting anywhere with your insurance company or the laws are not being applied properly, we are fully prepared to go to trial,” Andres added. “While litigation is sometimes needed, if I can get involved with a client’s case at the early stages, I can help make sure any speed bumps are minimized from day one. As the 15-year-old company has branched out, its employees have all become certified arborists, a reflection of the team’s dedication to providing the best possible care to the trees that enhance the community’s urban landscapes. “That says a lot for the kind of talent we attract and that our people take their work seriously,” Amy said. The team’s expertise is rooted in outstanding customer service and respect for each other, founder Jeff Grewe said. “We’ve redefined our mission and vision statements and core values,” Jeff said. “In doing so, we’ve created a cohesive and harmonious culture where our employees take ownership and are encouraged to grow personally and professionally. There are a lot of choices in our industry, but at the end of the day, people want to feel good about who they interacted with. It comes down to friendly, certified, professional arborists. oday’s security systems aren’t merely about guarding a residential or business property against unwanted intrusion, said Don McGuire, a system design consultant for Atronic Alarms.

“Your solution should cover the property for fire, carbon monoxide, and water damage,” he said. “It should also incorporate video, controlled access, and more.” Atronic Alarms not only provides comprehensive services to protect each customer’s property around the clock, the team also prides itself on staying on the leading edge of security technology.

“We strive to provide solutions that are customized and economical while being backed by quality installation and service,” McGuire said. “Recently we’ve done a lot of conversions from bathtub to shower,” Brandon remarked. “We can also help you get ready for your golden years by installing a shower that’s wheelchair-accessible or has a low threshold so it’s easier to step into.” All Bath Fitter products are sold and installed by factory-trained Bath Fitter employees, not subcontractors. The work can often be finished in as little as one day, and each Bath Fitter installation comes with a warranty that lasts as long as a homeowner retains their house. The process begins with a free in-home consultation. “We’re a very low-pressure company,” Brandon says. “We’ll design a solution that fits your space, but if you’re not comfortable with the solution or you’re not ready to move forward yet, we’ll talk when you are ready.” BATH FITTER 8905 F ST. ompanies rent semitrailers from Batten Trailer Leasing to transport everything from steel beams to elephants.

“We provide service to a variety of industries,” says President/Owner Blaine Batten. “We work with the construction industry and special events, such as the College World Series and the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting. We have a convenient rental period from one day to one year.” Blaine started Batten Trailer Leasing in the early 1970s after two decades in the trucking industry as a

salesman for Werner Enterprises and Mack Trucks. In the early 1990s, he moved the business to its current location and added a three-bay maintenance shop. Batten Trailer Leasing rents flatbed, lowboy, stepdeck, and storage trailers. There is an advantage to using trailers from Batten Trailer Leasing, as customers can move the trailers from one area of their parking lots

to another. No special equipment is needed, as compared to using pods or containers. “I have very much enjoyed helping my customers over the years and certainly appreciate their patronage,” Batten says. BATTEN TRAILER LEASING 4511 S. 67TH ST. 402.339.1429 BATTENTRAILERLEASING.COM

attoos and piercings are expressions of creativity, and Big Brain owner Joseph “Smitty” Smith is proud of the artistic abilities of the tattoo artists and piercers who’ve helped him establish and grow Big Brain Productions over 20 years. “We’ve always focused so much on talent in this business, which is essential, and we’ve built our reputation on that,” Smith said. But, he added, successfully managing 200 piercing services a day takes a special kind of “business mind” he’s been lucky to find in head piercer/ shop manager Dave Brown. “He’s expanded the business exponentially,” Smith said, explaining that Brown has improved inventory management to keep a greater volume of jewelry in stock. Special orders are easier, clients have a better selection of jewelry—especially gold and gemstone pieces—and the increased demand for piercing services is met with effective staffing and shorter wait times. “It’s well-run, organized, and efficient,” Smith said. “It’s not the sexiest part of the business, but it’s a practical one. And it separates us from our competition.” BIG BRAIN DOWNTOWN 1123 JACKSON ST. | OMAHA, NE 68102 402.342.2885 BIG BRAIN WEST 16920 WRIGHT PLAZA, SUITE 162 OMAHA, NE 68130 402.905.4175 BIGBRAINOMAHA.COM

ermatologists see the skin as the window to the body, said Dr. Mary Finnegan of Braddock Finnegan Dermatology. “There are over 3,000 diagnoses in dermatology and I believe we are well-prepared to treat anything.”

Dermatology is a high-demand specialty in this community, but the team still makes a point to get to know each patient personally, said Dr. Blake Helget, because stress and other factors can affect a patient’s skin. Upon joining the growing practice last summer, Helget became the newest member of the team founded by Dr. Suzanne Braddock (now retired) and led by Dr. Mary Finnegan. The practice sees patients of all ages.

hen new clients call for service for their plumbing, heating and cooling, electrical, drainage, or other systems, it’s usually an emergency. But Burton A/C, Heating, Plumbing & More President Mark Evans said they make sure clients understand their choices and feel good about the outcome, whether it’s repair, upgrade, or replacement and whether they’ve chosen good, better, or the best components available.

“We try to turn bad days into good days,” Evans said. “We get people back in their homes and give them options for what needs to be done and pricing up front so they can make an educated decision and get their life back on track.”

|| 18 ||

Faces of Omaha 2020

People tend to forget about their home systems when they’re functioning correctly, Evans said. “But the older it gets, the more likely it is to have a breakdown,” he said.

One advantage of being a Burton customer is that the company will advise when it’s time for maintenance and replacement. This strategy avoids inconvenience, plus the investment in equipment can pay off in energy costs. “The equipment keeps getting more and more efficient, so we’re able to offer even more energy savings when we do those replacements,” Evans said.

Evans said he’s especially proud of the customer service training the company provides to its employees. “It really comes down to our people… people grow the business,” he said. “We make sure our people really understand the business and that it’s not their house, it’s not their money, it’s not their choice. Their job is to give the client choices and a lot of time the client doesn’t know what those are; all they really know is it needs to be fixed.”

Respecting the client and serving them with integrity are key, Evans said. It’s no wonder Burton has grown steadily over three decades and been voted Best of Omaha 15 years in a row.

mahans might know Clete Blakeman for being a competitive athlete on the football field, a fair and balanced ref on the sidelines, or equal parts of each in a courtroom. He may have become a hometown hero during his time as a Nebraska Cornhusker, but in his 29 years as a personal injury lawyer he has become a personal hero to each client he has represented.

As a partner at the firm of Carlson and Burnett, Blakeman sets himself apart by remaining the point-man on each case. In each phone call and meeting, a client is not talking with an assistant, but to Clete himself. When working with those who are seeking to right a wrong, Blakeman understands the delicacy and urgency of each case. He understands because he is working directly with families and individuals to get a clear understanding of what they have been through and what it will take to get their lives back on track. Blakeman’s personal injury clients are after something much harder to come by than compensation, they’re looking for understanding and compassion. FAMILY DINING

TONY VERNON Catfish Lake

T

he interior is a little more cozy and the views are different, but the familyfriendly atmosphere and excellent food at Catfish Lake’s new location will make past patrons feel right at home and new patrons feel welcome, owner Tony Vernon said. The locally owned business, which opened in 1986, moved to La Platte last year after being displaced by flooding. The restaurant is now located on the south side of Bellevue near the intersection of Highways 75 and 34.

The menu includes an assortment of beef, chicken, pork, and seafood dishes along with a full selection of appetizers, salads and sides and a nice choice of desserts. The house-cut steaks are aged to perfection and char-broiled to order, and the pork tenderloin sandwich was named one of the best available locally by an Omaha World-Herald food critic. Prices are modest, too.

A

s this local dental practice expanded to multiple locations and the need for a unifying brand emerged, numerous clever options were considered— but The Dentists ultimately landed on an unpretentious moniker.

“We kept it simple,” says Jennifer Abshier, the practice administrator. “People can remember us.” The practice’s core values are distilled down to the fundamentals as well: respect, humility, consistency, compassion, selfawareness, and joy. The four dentists and all the employees—from the person greeting the patient to the person coordinating the next appointment—follow these values in everything they do.

“People want to be treated with kindness,” Abshier says. When the patient is in the dental chair they are treated with an individualized plan that starts with taking time to listen to the patient to ascertain their needs and priorities, followed by a thorough exam and educating them on their options. The Dentists offer the latest options, like 3-D imaging and sedation

e’s supported the healthy smiles of thousands of patients over many years, but “I am still as passionate about it today as I was when I first started,” Dr. Kort Igel said. He’s always been willing to look beyond the standard of care. Airway orthodontics, which focuses on addressing breathing concerns in orthodontic care, has been a positive evolution in the field in recent years. But it’s something Igel has been doing for decades.

“We’ve been an airway-centered practice for 25 years,” he said. “We individualize everyone’s treatment plan with the airway in mind as priority one. ven after more than 20 years of providing managed IT services and VOIP phone systems to local companies, InfiNet Solutions is highly responsive to the changing marketplace. This can mean anything from providing clients personalized training for new software and technology to protecting them from hackers and ransomware with an enhanced focus on cybersecurity.

“It really comes down to the relationships we work hard to cultivate with our clients,” said founder Steve Johnson. “Just being a help desk or talking on phone doesn’t do that. We do in person strategy meetings and onsite visits and other things our competitors aren’t doing.

InfiNet Solutions has grown its client base primarily through personal referrals and recommendations cultivated by those positive relationships, Johnson said. And with a team of around 20, InfiNet Solutions is larger than most IT support companies but smaller

than the nationwide larger firms and locally owned. This creates alignment and a special awareness of clients’ needs concerns and goals. As a comprehensive IT resource, the InfiNet team ensures that every company they serve is provided customized services backed by training, monitoring and other ongoing support. The dish is then combined with tomato, cucumber, and cilantro and served cold with tostadas. Sushi is another popular choice. “We have people from different countries working with us, so we offer

Ralph Marasco practiced these words that he preached in his business and in his life. That is why Ralph was the top individual real estate agent in Omaha for two decades.

Ralph started working in real estate with B.J. Brown & Associates in 1985. According to son Nico, Ralph’s favorite part of selling real estate was helping people find a home where they would create memories. This meant always picking up the phone and making sure clients were taken care of. Ralph’s father, a car salesman, worked 90 hours a week, and Ralph followed suit. Nico said he would not let clients make a mistake. He was the voice of reason during this emotional purchase. He wasn’t there for the quick sale—he was there to build a relationship. “His business was personal to him,” Nico said. The business is also personal to Nico, who lost his father to coronavirus in late March 2020. “I’ve been working with my dad since I graduated college,” said Nico. “In his honor I’m going to rename the company Ralph Marasco Real Estate Group.” Nothing, however, will change the Marascos’ philosophy of being fair and honest. arco often hears from clients that they are concerned about getting hacked, not confident that they are secure and find it difficult to mitigate risk to their organization. As a leading business technology provider, Marco helps organizations identify risks, protect their environment, detect and respond to suspicious activity, and help them recover if needed.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology, a government institution that provides standards, guidelines, and best practices, has identified five key areas of security that every business should address. “Most technology providers only focus on two areas,” said Dustin Bonn, IT sales manager for Marco. “Our IT services address all five.” “Our approach gives business owners a more predictable model for combating threats, and it relieves IT folks of complex and ever-changing issues that tie up so much of their time,” Bonn said. The doctors who formed the company three years ago (from a merger of GIKK Ortho Specialists and Midwest Neurosurgery & Spine Specialists) chose the “ONE” in their name to stand for Ortho Neuro Excellence. But “ONE” also suggests a union, and earlier this spring, the physicians of Methodist Physicians Clinic Orthopedics joined MD West ONE to provide the most advanced, efficient and cost-effective orthopedic, neurosurgery and spine care to greater Omaha.

The expanded MD West ONE practice is composed of nine neurosurgery and spine specialists and 23 orthopedic specialists, one of the largest teams in the region. The expansion has created a center of excellence, with the combined expertise and resources of its specialists available to patients at eight locations and 12 outreach clinics.

MD West ONE’s surgeons specialize in surgical and non-surgical treatment of conditions and injuries affecting the entire musculoskeletal and nervous systems. No matter what the injury or illness, MD West ONE patients can expect efficient access to high-quality, cost-effective care.

When faced with a sudden bone, joint, or muscle injury, people can skip the wait time and cost of the ER and visit the newly opened Ortho & Spine Urgent Care at MD West ONE, located off 156th & Dodge streets. n this part of the country, concrete moves around constantly,” noted Bob Mixan, owner of Mixan Mudjacking. “In dry years the soil shrinks because there’s not enough moisture, and in wet years it swells because there’s too much moisture. You also have movement from cycles of freezing and thawing.”

As a result of all this activity, concrete slabs often become uneven. How can you fix the problem without tearing out the concrete and starting over? The answer is mudjacking—raising a concrete slab by drilling 1-inch holes and injecting a mixture of Portland and limestone. Mudjacking is much

wenty-six percent of our staff have been here 10 years or longer,” said Veronica Sapp, director of business development at RTG Medical. “From our recruiting team and account managers to company leaders, over time, our people have proven their commitment and dedication to serving our traveling healthcare professionals.”

Since 2001, RTG Medical has been matching traveling medical professionals (“travelers”) with medical facilities in all 50 states. Travelers fall into two main age groups: recent graduates in their mid20s, and empty nesters over age 50.

Travelers sign up for 13-week assignments, and RTG’s recruiters help them settle into their new community as they begin each new assignment. “At the end of the day, what matters is the relationship that they have with their recruiter,” Sapp said. “At RTG, they know their recruiter has their best interests in mind.”

This spring, RTG is scheduled to break ground on a new three-story building that is projected to open in 2021. rother-and-sister co-owners Jeannie and Joe Pittack have been at the helm of Ted & Wally’s since 2000. Over 20 years, they’ve maintained the fundamentals of amazing East Coast-style ice cream, including using dairy with a high butterfat content and a traditional churning process with century-old freezers using rock salt and ice.

But they’ve still managed to make a great product even better. “We’ve bumped it up to ultra-premium, 20% butterfat, the highest in the nation. We make it from scratch and use real ingredients like sugar and egg yolks—not pre-mix, not corn syrup, not modified vegetable oils and gums as emulsifiers,” Jeannie Pittack said.

Ted & Wally’s strives to use locally sourced ingredients, Pittack added, and the team has accumulated more than 3,000 recipes; it was quite a process to transfer the paper recipe library to an electronic database, the one exception to the company philosophy that things are better the old-fashioned way.

Pittack is proud to say that no one else in the Midwest can make these same claims. “It makes us unique.” TED & WALLY’S OLD MARKET: 1120 JACKSON ST. OMAHA, NE 68102 | 402.341.5827 BENSON: 6023 MAPLE ST. OMAHA, NE 68104 | 402.551.4420 TEDANDWALLYS.COM

t take a strong person to resist the infectiously positive atmosphere at Todd Smith Fitness. By making it a habit to show up, people find themselves growing stronger, yet less resistant, by the day.

The driving force behind the atmosphere in the facility is the energy Todd Smith has put into creating something that goes beyond physical strength. “I think that most people who get into the wellness industry are business people who happened to settle on fitness as their business,” Smith said. “For me, owning a gym means you have to be an entrepreneur, a leader, and an artist. It is absolutely an art to deliver an experience that people love. Everyone who walks into my doors should feel the joy, excitement, and gratitude that built this business.” Smith credits his lack of sales quotas, higherthan-average wages, and the genuine love his team holds for their clientele for the success of his business. Rocha and her husband moved to Omaha in 2006, and over the following 9 years her passion for empowering women led her to opening Truly U in 2018, Omaha’s first and only custom bra boutique. In addition to being the store’s owner, Rocha is one of four certified fitters at Truly U. Each fitter has undergone months of training and traveled to New York City to complete a course in bra fitting. “We want to be known for the education and quality products that we provide,” Rocha said. e’ve had had tremendous growth over the last year,” The Volleyball Academy’s founder Deb Grafentin said. And her team is poised for more growth. The versatile 50,000-square-foot facility boasts eight wood-surface courts that accommodate an impressive schedule of lessons, training programs, and camps, along with youth and adult leagues, competitions and tournaments at all levels from recreational to highly competitive. More boys are participating in the sport, Grafentin said. She’s putting together a new spring league starting in May for high-school boys and is working with local schools to recruit teams of six or more who will get professional instruction from her staff before their scrimmages.

“It’s a very powerful, athletic, dynamic sport,” she said. “Once they get playing they realize how challenging it is and how fun it is.” Corporations are also discovering the camaraderie and team building of recreational outings at The Volleyball Academy that can be customized to include not just volleyball but food and entertainment, Grafentin added. “The whole culture of our facility and our business is community, family, and fun,” she said.
