What happens when we

believe in better pediatric care

At Children’s Physicians, we enhance the wonder of childhood by delivering a special kind of care. The kind that soothes worries and restores a smile. That makes you feel like your pediatrician is part of your family. And that provides extended hours, same-day sick visits and online scheduling that makes checkups a breeze. When we choose to believe, kids get the care they need. Parents get the compassion they deserve. And we get the privilege of helping every child grow into their healthiest, happiest self. In exploring the pages of this 2024 edition of Family Guide, it’s evident that Nebraska provides a myriad of opportunities for its residents. Families are fortunate to access top-notch educational possibilities and extracurricular activities that enhance the experiences of every child, no matter where their strengths and interests lie. Omaha Performing Arts’ Hip Hop Lab program is designed to educate, elevate, and amplify the 50-year legacy surrounding the essence of hip hop. This program doesn’t just scratch the surface—it fosters an understanding of culture in an immersive learning environment fully equipped for Omaha’s youth to explore dance, fashion, history, and art through the universal language of music. Millard West High School’s Tvisha Agarwal brings amazing tech skills to the table—it’s no wonder she was named the AIM Institute’s Tech Student of the Year in 2023. With her six advanced placement classes, impressive coding and tech accomplishments, and experience with teaching code to students in both Omaha and India, Agarwal is an outstanding name in our education system. Millard Public Schools’ Fox family brings a new meaning to “it takes a village.” The blended family of 11 children ranging in age from 3 to 26 have shared countless celebrations and navigated numerous obstacles, but they emphasize that quitting isn’t in their DNA. Despite their “stormy seasons,” the Foxes make one thing clear: raising their family in Omaha never gets boring. Omaha South High School’s Tyler Gruttemeyer is a vocal and music teacher with a passion for our local choral community—an ideal trait to have while leading South High’s show choir, The Ambassadors. With a drive to help his students succeed, he makes an effort to always shine the spotlight on their diversity and talents. Keep an eye out for The Ambassadors’ next show choir season led by Mr. Gruttemeyer; this year’s theme is a celebration of Latin culture. Finally, be sure to delve into our special summer camp listings to plan ahead for the season. Whatever captivates your child’s interest—be it sports, art, theater, writing, crafts, camping, or beyond—there’s a program or camp designed to ignite their passion. This edition of Family Guide truly underscores the abundant opportunities available to the families and students in our community. I hope you find pleasure in exploring the endless possibilities showcased within these pages. natalie @omahapublications.com

Tyler Gruttemeyer Cultivates Musical Excellence at South High

yler Gruttemeyer is one of two choir directors at Omaha South High School. Ask him what his official title at the school is, and he might shrug in response. “I actually don’t know what my legitimate title is. I think it’s ‘vocal and musical teacher,’ but sometimes it’s listed as ‘choral director,’” he said. “It depends on what circles you’re running in. I teach The Ambassadors show choir; I teach a voice class and direct the chamber choir program.” After a pause and a laugh, he added, “I do something else, but I can’t remember what it is.” That “something else” might be running the concert or freshman choir or teaching at the middle school once or twice a week. It might be helping his students prepare for college vocal auditions or auditions for community productions. It might also mean consulting with El Museo Latino to learn more about Día de los Muertos for The Ambassadors’ show celebrating the holiday. Whatever that “something else” is, helping students thrive is at the center of it. Gruttemeyer likely doesn’t realize the profound impact he has on South High students, fellow staff members, or the community, because he just sees it all as fun. “When kids are awesome and you get to enjoy what you do, it doesn’t feel like work,” he said. When a choir director puts their heart and soul into their students, it doesn’t go unnoticed. “Tyler knows his students and the South community and provides them an amazing experience,” Westside High School choral director Doran Johnson said. “He teaches kids to sing and dance, but he also teaches them how to be good humans. He brings a tremendous amount of energy and positivity to the entire show choir community.” “Mr. Gruttemeyer truly cares for his students deeply and provides them with learning opportunities and memories that will help shape them for a lifetime,” Brian Johnson, Papillion La Vista South High School co-director of choral activities, added. “He

has been integral in the continued success of the choir and show choir programs, always leading with the students’ best interest at the forefront of his teaching.” A Millard West High School alum, Gruttemeyer attended the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in music education before earning a master’s degree in educational psychology with an emphasis in teaching applications from the University of Northern Colorado. Prior to accepting a teaching role at Omaha South two years ago, he taught general music and choir in Grand Island to middle schoolers. He enjoyed being part of the Grand Island community, but when the opportunity to interview at Omaha South—the high school from which his father graduated—presented itself, he jumped at the chance. “As much as I liked Grand Island, I wanted to come back,” he shared, adding that his family still lives in the Omaha area. “I kind of knew South was the place for me when, in my interview, our assistant principal pulled out the 1969 yearbook and showed me a picture of my dad,” he shared. “South has always felt like home.” Gruttemeyer looks forward to the 2024 show choir season with great anticipation. This year’s theme is a celebration of Latin culture. “We wanted to do something to show off our community,” he said. “[We] get a ton of support from our community and from the parents and at the district level too. I love our choral community in Omaha and Nebraska—you don’t see some of the rivalries that you might see in other states.” In his unwavering dedication to his craft no matter the circumstances, Gruttemeyer often imparts one particular message to his students: “We’re not perfect, but we’re perfect as we are.” For more information about Tyler Gruttemeyer’s choir programs, visit ops.org/south.

achel and Brent Fox both look younger than their ages. Consequently, when they’re out with their 3-and 6-yearolds, they sometimes find themselves on the receiving end of encouraging comments or even unsolicited parenting advice. The older moms and dads they encounter believe they’re offering a young couple experiential wisdom, the Foxes explained. They find the comments sweet, but amusing. “It’s harmless,” Rachel said. “They mean well… but they don’t know our lives.” What they don’t know is that Brent and Rachel should probably be the ones giving the parenting advice. Not only do they have a blended family of 11 children ranging in ages from 3 to 26, but they now also have two grandchildren. The cohort living at home has shifted as the children become adults. Currently, twins Christopher and Christian, 26, are both in the U.S. Air Force, with Christian stationed overseas and Christopher stateside. Cheyanne, 23, is married with two young children and living in Nebraska. Cameron, 21, is a U.S. Marine stationed on the East Coast. Israel, 20, lives in the area and works with adults

more than one child’s academic struggles. They’ve enjoyed much laughter and good-natured roasting, being adopted by a sweet stray dog who proved to be a kennel Houdini, introducing a new puppy and several cats to the household, and sharing stories of the adventures of Bruno, the tortoise. Brent characterizes the family in one word: Resiliency. If the family had a motto, it would be “Never give up,” Rachel added. “Our family has gone through so many different challenges and we have overcome a lot of different things, a lot of stormy seasons. We never allow those challenges to define us,” she explained. “We don’t quit. That’s not in our DNA as a family.” “I do know that they keep God first,” said Dr. Sheena Reynolds, CEO of Remedy Road LLC, who met Rachel through work in 2017. “[Rachel and Brent] have good communication, and they see eye-to-eye. They have the same goals in parenting and their relationship…they’re able to talk about anything and everything, and if they disagree, they work things out. They love working with others and giving back to the community.”

with developmental disabilities. Eighteen-year-old Isaac is a recent graduate of Millard North High School who works in construction and is studying cybersecurity. Genesis, 17, is a senior at Millard North High School and works at a part-time retail job. Millard North Middle Schooler Rhema is 12. Ethan, 9, attends Cather Elementary (Millard Public Schools). The youngest are 6-year-old Jayce and 3-year-old Jaxon.

“It really is a mic-drop moment…when people hear that we have 11 children. They’re like, ‘What?!’” Rachel shared. “I think everybody’s immediate response is, ‘Your house must be crazy.’ And they wouldn’t be too off-base. Everybody doesn’t live here, but I think we have every stage on the spectrum: We have adults; we have teenagers; we have the pre-teen and toddler stages—all going through it at one time.”

The couple met through their church in 2012. They each were parents to four children and had three more children together after marrying in 2013.

It’s been wonderful to see everyone bloom in their own way, Rachel added. “But, some of the most beautiful things we describe also present the most challenges,” she said. “They have different personalities. They have different wants, different needs.”

“We established right away that there are no ‘steps,’ there are no ‘halves,’” Rachel noted. “You’re all ‘ours.’” Together, Rachel and Brent have experienced their share of ups and downs. They’ve taught teenagers to drive and ushered young adults into independence and adulthood. They’ve welcomed three babies and mourned a pregnancy loss. They’ve seen career success: Brent as a small-business owner (Fox Flooring) and Rachel as a leadership and development expert whose roles have included consulting, training, coaching, and public speaking; Rachel also launched a nonprofit, You Go Girl Omaha. They’ve celebrated many happy moments and children’s achievements. They’ve also navigated through a child’s life-threatening illness and long recovery, another child’s teenage brush with the law, and

Brent is a self-described “neat freak.” As a single parent to a much smaller group of children, he said his former home was immaculate, or as he puts it, “You would have thought it was one of those models.” That standard was impossible to sustain with a larger family— especially when babies were brought into the mix again, Brent explained—and he adjusted to living in a still-organized, but lessthan-perfect environment. To keep order, the couple has created a fair division of work between them and encouraged the children to be as independent and responsible as possible from an early age. “It might be chaotic to you,” Brent said, “but see, we know how to make this work for us. Some people are not built for this.”

“At first, I had a bulletin board where everybody did their chores on a specific day—that went out the window,” she said. “We [decided] to just live our lives and be the family that we have grown to be; we can’t be ‘Pinterest parents.’ We’re not going to take a picture of every single milestone. We’re going to live our lives and do what works for us.”

“Some of the zingers, or ‘moments,’ are very random. When we say, ‘We should have a camera for that,’ it’s over, it’s long gone,” Rachel said. “‘Reality’ is staged reality. If someone were to make a reality show based off of our family, they would get the authenticity, but it would still be some form of setting up the scenario.”

Life as a big family can certainly be entertaining, and the couple takes it in stride. “Brent and Rachel are down-to-earth people,” Reynolds said, “and they’re funnier than hell.” Many people have suggested over the years that the Foxes could star in their own reality show, Brent added, which the couple finds rather humorous. “I think that’s interesting. I wonder how the camera crews are able to do it, because they have to follow a family around to get a story; I mean, it’s not always exciting,” he said. “You have to plan some of

Although they don’t share it with the public, their life with a big family is never boring, the Foxes said. Plus, it’s rewarding. “They keep us young; they keep us active,” Rachel said. “They keep us honest. Kids are some of the most truth-telling humans, and if you’re not consistent with something, or if you don’t keep a promise, they will let you know. They hold you accountable.” “They challenge you to be better,” Brent added. “We’re also big about how we speak. nvision a classroom where your child doesn’t just study the world around them, but actively engages with it. Textbooks share space with exotic creatures, and the lesson of the day might have fur or feathers. This isn’t your typical high school experience; it’s Zoo Academy, a program inviting juniors and seniors to explore core subjects in one of only two such programs in the U.S.

science, and literature often extend onto zoo grounds. One of Bryan’s most memorable moments was during a veterinary shadowing session when he got hands-on experience with a takin, assisting in hoof trims and routine examinations of the gnu goat. He’s worked extensively with the hoofstock team and, most recently, shadowed at the Grewcock Butterfly and Insect Pavilion.

With the zoo as their classroom, students immerse themselves in a STEM-based curriculum while engaging with professionals through their chosen courses and internships. Led by certified teachers, the program allows students to earn graduation credits while exploring an array of careers, including zoology, veterinary science, horticulture, and more.

“Our community is invested in the students here at the Zoo,” Litz noted. “Students are committed to taking advantage of their opportunities. [Their passion] is what drives this program forward.”

“Zoo Academy strives to provide the best education possible through career exploration, classroom experiences, and authentic research opportunities,” explained Leah Litz, Education Program Manager at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. “The real-world experiences embedded in this program position students for success prior to entering their next step in higher education.”

Bryan has noticed a particular difference from traditional classrooms—a learning environment that ignites enthusiasm across subjects, encouraging eager participation among his classmates. “[There’s] an atmosphere of everybody actually wanting to be here, because everybody had to go through the application and interviews,” Bryan explained. “Everyone here is willing to try their best, and I’m working with others who have similar interests as me.”

Zoo Academy proudly promotes their mission: to provide students with knowledge and career explorations relating to life sciences through authentic STEM experiences. In a partnership with nine school districts in the Omaha metro and Southwest Iowa, the program offers two distinct pathways: Animal Science and Conservation Research. “Through the Animal Science Pathway, students can take courses in zoology, veterinary science, and animal care,” Litz explained. “Through the Conservation Research Pathway, students can take courses focusing on conservation biology, genetics, and land and habitat management.” Students regularly interact with scientists and participate in research endeavors. Partnering colleges and programs provide unique opportunities, including a program where esteemed scientists and STEM leaders foster conversations rarely accessible in standard academic settings. “With the connections I’ve made with people in different professions, I know I can find a volunteer job in places I’ve previously job shadowed in,” noted Bryan,* a graduating senior at Omaha South High School in his second year of Zoo Academy. “You can only get so much from a textbook or video.” Zoo Academy seniors step beyond their classrooms for shadow classes twice a week, working with animal care staff or exploring veterinary clinics in the metro area. Subjects like ecology, behavioral

The academy divides its 120 students into morning and afternoon halfday sessions, ensuring each student stays closely connected with their home high school. “Zoo Academy offers courses in all core subject areas: science, math, language arts, and social studies,” Litz explained. “No matter what courses students take, their learning is directly tied to our zoo community and capitalizes on authentic experiences for all students.” Understanding scientific concepts formed the basis of Bryan’s zoo research curriculum, followed by applying data analysis and statistics (math) and articulating findings in descriptive formats (language arts). In his environmental literature class, he delved into ecology and environmental laws within an English framework. “We want students to know they belong in STEM, and Zoo Academy is just one piece of our education puzzle here at the zoo,” Litz shared. “We’re building a science identity for our students starting in early childhood.” For younger children, Omaha Zoo offers programs like Little Lions Preschool, Zoo Kindergarten in partnership with Bancroft Elementary, and youth volunteer programs to nurture students’ interest in science and prepare them for the academy. *last name omitted at Zoo Academy’s request continued on pg.28 FAMILY GUIDE 2024

Evaluation goes beyond attendance and grades—students often demonstrate their commitment outside the traditional school day by participating in science fairs or securing jobs. Communication involves a parent portal and weekly updates, and parents can also engage in their children’s education during showcases such as Party for the Planet, taking place on April 20 for Earth Day. “[This] experience is really valuable; I know now that veterinary science is definitely something I would consider as a career,” Bryan shared. “Helping animals is something I’d like to do, even if it requires more schooling than other career pathways—I know it will be worth it.”
