Her Editor’s Letter Bailey Hemphill • Editor
Dear Readers,
I
ntroductions make me nervous. I never know what to say about myself, and I usually end up shaking someone’s hand for a whole minute because I’m not exactly sure when social protocol dictates that I let go. Fortunately, this is a magazine, so I don’t have to shake hands; but I do still have to tell you about myself. I could tell you that my name is Bailey Hemphill, which would keep this introduction short and to the point; or I could tell you about my obsessions with How I Met Your Mother, celebrity gossip, and chihuahuas, which might be a little much. So let’s start with something in between… Hi, I’m Bailey Hemphill, and I’m the new editor of HerLiving. I’ve been working as an assistant editor with Omaha Publications for a little more than a year now, and I actually worked as an editorial intern in the summer of 2010, during which my current boss referred to me as “Number 16” because he couldn’t remember my name. Some of my favorite magazines to read are Women’s Health, People, Vogue, and—of course— Omaha Magazine. I’m really excited to work on HerLiving because I have a lot of great ideas to keep you, the readers, happy, healthy, and loving life in Omaha. On this issue’s cover (pg. 9), we feature Jennifer Windrum, a public relations and social media professional, who used her skills to start a movement for better lung cancer funding after her mom was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. If you’re looking to create change, perhaps Windrum’s story will inspire you to join her “WTF? For Lung Cancer” campaign or start your own social movement. Also featured this issue is more local fashion (pg. 26), but this time we have two twists: the outfits are not only Halloween-themed, but they’re also worn by members of the Omaha Publications staff—including myself! If that’s not a fun (and possibly embarrassing) start to my first issue as editor, then I don’t know what is. And we’ve got a new fitness column (pg. 12) where local trainers and fitness gurus will share their workout of the moment, so that you can stay in shape! Don’t forget to come visit Omaha Magazine and HerLiving’s booth at the Just For Her Holiday Expo 2012 at the CenturyLink Center from Oct. 26-28! The expo will have fantastic shopping, much-needed pampering, and plenty of fun for just $10 at the door. For more information, visit www.justforherexpo.com. With peace, love, and multiple margaritas,

Art Jess Benjamin Story by Pamela S. Thompson • Photos by minorwhitestudios.com
Jess Benjamin
“A

s an artist, I am a problem-solver. I am interested in finding solutions to the problems of the world I live in.” Touring Jess Benjamin’s art studio in historic Benson is like cramming for a science final. Each and every large-scale ceramic piece displayed around the space contains a scientific message concerning our planet’s fragile environment, specifically, earth’s serious global drought. “My research is my art,” Benjamin explains as she walks around the 4,300 square-foot corner studio at 65th Avenue and Maple, once home to an upholstery company. Gone are the sofas, chairs, cushions, and fabric swatches of the former shop then located on the old trolley route. Instead, clay formations of jackstones, jackpots, biofuels, watercolors, and installations dot portions of Benjamin’s impressive, immaculate exhibition studio. “I have discovered many structural similarities between jackstones, water, and ethanol

molecules,” she explains. “By utilizing these objects I am able to search for the interactions among man-made objects, chemistry, economics, cartography, mathematics, and my own imagination.” Various installations enliven the working space, including a neatly stacked pile of handmade, hand-stamped bricks containing the names of alternative energy sources such as corn, wind, switch grass, flax, soy beans, and hydro nuclear; a pack of biofuels that www.OmahaPublications.com
Nebraska’s only licensed STOTT PILATES training center Thank you Omaha for voting us take the form of man’s best friend— a dog; and a collection of oversized jackstones, which are six-pointed steel armatures used to fortify big public land projects—like the Kingsley Dam that once symbolized the strength of Nebraska’s future. “I try to expose the fragile balance between man and nature,” she said. Raised on a farm and ranch near Cozad, Neb., Benjamin knows personally what deva stat ion a drought like the one this summer can do to a farmer’s corn crop and a rancher’s grassland. As the daughter of a corn farmer, she knows agriculture’s unshakable dependency on water. “The future of agriculture will be in how this paradox can be balanced,” she said. “Farmers have always had to change with the conditions. They will learn to grow more crops with less water.” Her topical watercolor series tackles the issue head-on by focusing on the rise and decline of water usage for Lake McConaughy, Lake Mead, and the Missouri River. A 24-foot-long map of the Missouri River from 2008 depicts the water levels using handmade clay rebars. Benjamin uses the rebar as both a symbol of strength and a lesson on the power of water. She mixes her own recipe of clay purchased from Endicott, Neb., and concocts her own color palate. Her intense focus on the effects of the drought across the state is even illustrated in a striking map of the Ogallala Aquifer that graces the cover of a new book, The Ruling Ideas by Creighton University philosopher Amy Wendling. Armed with a bachelor’s degree in studio art from Hastings College, an MFA from Bowling Green State University, and an apprenticeship with noted Omaha artist Jun Kaneko, Benjamin is currently the ceramics instructor at UNO. “Teaching gives me energy,” she explained. “I’m not as angry and grumpy as I used to be. Now, I use brighter colors and think mathematically. I’m a baby stepping my way to changing the world.” That includes making abstract works that connect with a universal audience concerned about climate changes, but don’t place blame. “My new work is like me,” she said. “I’m scientific and organized.”

Familiarize Yourself With Your Vehicle
W
e have all done it. Gotten into a vehicle unfamiliar to us and just taken off. This is easy to do but could cost you down the road. Whether it’s a newly purchased vehicle or a rental, there are a few things to know before hopping on the road. • Headlights: Where are they? Do they turn on automatically? Knowing how to properly use the headlights becomes extremely important as day turns to night. • Windshield wipers/wiper fluid: There might not be a cloud in the sky but that could change at any moment. • Mirrors: Can you see? Adjust all mirrors so that you can use them adequately as you drive. • Hazard lights: This button can elude even the most experienced driver when needed in a crunch; make sure to check out the location of this button in case of emergency. • Seat: Is your seat in the right position? It is difficult to adjust the seat while driving and could be hazardous. Take a few seconds and make sure your seat is well adjusted. • Radio: This one may not be necessary, but it’s nice to start the drive with the radio in tune and at a nice volume. • Climate Control: Set the AC/Heat to the appropriate level, and make sure to know how to adjust it if necessary. As complex as vehicles are today, they can be very different from one another. Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the vehicle you’re driving and start your drive safely.

WHERE’S THE
FUNDING for lung cancer?
A
fter her m o m , Le s li e Le h r m a n , announced that she had Stage IV inoperable, incurable lung cancer in 2005, Jennifer Windrum, 41, saw her mission in life become crystal clear. “We literally have a public health epidemic on our hands and virtually no one cares. I won’t stand for it. None of us can,” she says. Windrum, a former news reporter for KMTV Channel 3, felt compelled to research more about lung cancer upon her mom’s diagnosis—but she quickly learned that the “true” lung cancer story wasn’t being told. “Most people don’t know that anyone can get lung cancer. Lung cancer is not just a smoker’s disease,” Windrum stresses, adding that her mom has never smoked a day in her life. “Eighty percent of new lung cancer cases are diagnosed in people who have never smoked or are former smokers who quit decades ago…yet it remains the least funded of the four major cancers by a long shot.” Windrum says that because the government and a majority of the medical community >> www.ReadOnlineNow.com

Cover Feature Jennifer Windrum << have viewed lung cancer as a selfinflicted disease, lung cancer research has been virtually ignored for decades, leaving the five-year survival rate at only 15 percent. Frustrated, Windrum wanted to expose this information and create a movement of change. After years of public relations with her jobs as a press secretary for former Mayor Hal Daub and creating and managing the PR departments at Ervin and Smith and Swanson Russell, Windrum knew she had the skill to craft a social media campaign that could spread the word about lung cancer funding. “I knew I had to come up with an attention-getting, edgy campaign [name] in order to cut through the clutter,” she says. “A lot of people use digital acronyms—such as LOL, ROFL, etc.—so I wanted to tap into that relevant language in some fashion.” Windrum says she was lying in bed one night when it hit her—she would call her campaign “WTF (Where’s the Funding)? For Lung Cancer.” While the message of her campaign is clean, for people who understand the double entendre of the digital acronym, it packs a punch. Today, Windrum works from home on the WTF? campaign through Facebook, Twitter, and her website (www.wtflungcancer.com), where she shares and documents her mom’s struggles with lung cancer. “The only reason the campaign has been—and continues to be—successful is the WTF? community believing it has a voice and collectively and effectively using it.” Windrum believes that a dedicated community with the combination of social media can cause change anywhere. “Never believe your voice is smaller than anyone else’s.” “WTF-ers” have shown their commitment to Windrum’s mission by engaging in a variety of campaign challenges—photo petitions, calls-to-action resulting from investigative/hard news reporting, sharing personal stories, using and sharing advocacy tools created on Pinterest, and contacting their congressional representatives in support of lung cancer funding. While Windrum’s campaign has been featured in many local and regional news stories, the WTF? campaign has also gotten national media attention. It was featured in The Huffington Post and was also a finalist in the 4th Annual Mashable Awards for “Most Creative Social Media Campaign;” and

Windrum has also been a guest blogger for Livestrong and Stand Up 2 Cancer. “The fact that the campaign was a finalist in the 4th Annual Mashable Awards for ‘Most Creative Social Media Campaign’ is proof that the WTF? message is traveling,” she says. Windrum’s latest project is SMAC! Sock Monkeys Against Cancer. “Cancer can be a very lonely existence. Family and friends can’t always be there, and sometimes a cancer diagnosis can actually distance loved ones from a patient altogether.” Windrum knows this pain personally, as her mom lives more than 1,200 miles away in Phoenix. “I had long wanted to give my mom something special to keep—something filled with support and comfort that she could touch, hold, and feel.” When Windrum’s mom was in a Denver hospital for a week, Windrum gave her two sock monkeys that her and husband Roman’s 9-year-old twin daughters, Hudson and Campbell, had given to her for Mother’s Day. That’s when the idea was born. NoMo and Phoenix are the two sock monkey prototypes. NoMo is the SMAC! monkey, and Phoenix is the WTF? For Lung Cancer monkey. “My mom and I believe everyone impacted by cancer deserves to hold in their hands—or hug snugly in their arms—one of these constant, cuddly companions of the sock monkey kind to help them through their cancer journey,” she says. Windrum says she dreams big when it comes to the potential of the SMAC! project. She’d like to have a custom monkey for each type of cancer, as well as have them given to anyone diagnosed with cancer. Windrum will launch the SMAC! project this fall on the crowd-funding platform, Start Some Good, which connects social entrepreneurs with people and investors who want to help make their campaigns or projects a success. “Once I place my campaign on the platform, the pledging can begin. It will be a 30-day campaign to raise nearly $35,000 to launch the first batch of the SMAC! line, which, so far, includes NoMo and Phoenix.” Implementing the “One SMAC!=Two” business model into the campaign is Windrum’s main priority. In basic terms, when you buy one monkey, one will be given to someone impacted by cancer. Windrum compares it to TOMS Shoes, which follows a similar premise as a for-profit company with a social mission. But it won’t just be all about making sure those impacted by cancer have sock monkeys at their side. Windrum says she also wants to direct steady donations to the National Coalition of Oncology Nurse Navigators—as she believes all cancer patients should have a nurse navigator during cancer treatment—and to charitable program Liz’s Legacy at the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center—where some of the brightest scientists are working to bring results to patients in the treatment center. Windrum believes the only upside to her mom’s lung cancer is that it has strengthened their relationship. “By jointly telling her story, we have bonded in a way I never thought possible,” she says. “I think we finally have that mother/daughter relationship we always wished we had.” Because her mom has fought so long and hard with lung cancer, Windrum sees it as an inspiration to continue fighting for her. “The strength and grace with which my mom has faced lung cancer astonishes me. She is a fighter and wants to leave this world a better place—a changed one—by telling her story so publicly. As difficult as it can be, I feel so blessed to be able to tell her story.” Windrum and her mom made a pact that she would tell the story from beginning to end to change the way people think about lung cancer funding. Windrum says her future goals are to continue working on the SMAC! project and shut down the WTF? campaign. “My hope is that SMAC! starts a growing movement of all age groups that tackles cancer in a different way,” she says. As for shutting down the WTF? campaign, Windrum explains, “I don’t want it to be remotely relevant in five years…I see the campaign continuing to morph in an organic nature—evolving alongside the ever-changing needs that will not only finally make lung cancer a national priority, but keep it that way.”

Drinking on the First Date ...Do or Don’t?
T
he ordering of the first drink is going to set the pace for what could be a lifelong love affair—or a night you surely won’t remember. If you go straight for the tequila shot/beer combo, chances are he’s already forgotten your name and is focused on “your place or mine?” If you go for the classy move and order wine and he orders beer, he could get the wrong impression. The most important thing you can do in this situation is to be yourself. If you’re a beer girl, don’t order wine. He’s going to think you’re stuck up, and chances are you’ll spend the whole date pretending you’re someone you’re not, which is exactly what you’re doing by drinking something you wouldn’t normally drink. Make the best of the situation by letting him order his drink first. If he keeps it sensible, you’re well on your way to date number two. If he orders shooters and asks to do body shots off of you and the waitress at the same time, you’ll have plenty of time to drink it off with the girls after this dategone-bad.

This move is for a muscle we oftentimes neglect: the Transverse Abdominis (TVA). The TVA is sometimes referred to as the body’s “internal weight belt,” because it plays a major role in engaging your core and stabilizing your trunk, which helps to reduce the risk of injury. In addition to safety, another benefit of a strong TVA is appearing more slim and trim. By performing the drawing-in maneuver, or engaging your core, your TVA acts to pull in and tighten your mid-section, much like a corset would. To perform this move, you will need a heavy resistance band. Secure the resistance band to something stable (like a bed post or a door handle) at approximately your waist level.
Setup & Starting Position: 1.
2. 3.
With the resistance band on your left side, take 3 steps to the right away from where the band is secured, holding the band in both hands at your chest. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and toes straight ahead. Engage the core by drawing in and squeezing your glutes.

Her Business Profile Posh Peacock Consignment Gallery
T
he Posh Peacock is an upscale consignment shop that sells gently used furniture and home décor at great prices in a wide variety of styles—from antiques to Mid-Century modern pieces—for every room of the home. The showroom is over 4,000 square feet filled with many high-end brands known for quality and durability. Many of the consignors are downsizing homes, moving to other states, or are just looking to refresh their existing homes and need an outlet to sell their excess furniture. Owner Pauline Uhing has been a professional designer and home stager for over 20 years while working with her husband at his residential construction company. She is also a licensed Realtor, which allows her to work with her clients from many different angles. Years ago, she had a home décor shop in La Vista called The Posh Peacock. “I happened upon a consignment store on vacation, which gave me the idea that The Posh Peacock could be resurrected in a way that would work well with the current economy and put me back in a job that I love,” she says.

Uhing says one of the biggest challenges with the consignment gallery is keeping the store full of merchandise, as they have so much turnover on a weekly basis. “Recently, we’ve seen a big increase in people contacting us about consigning their less-needed items, which has helped tremendously,” says Uhing, who also shops estate sales and other “secret” places where she picks up great oneof-a-kind furniture and accessories that add a lot of pizzazz to the shop. Uhing is glad to have a strong support system in her husband and son, who both help at the shop when repairs are needed or when furniture needs to be moved. At the end of the day, Uhing says it’s nice to go home to her dogs, who help her unwind, or go for a relaxing motorcycle ride with her husband.

Breast Cancer The Genetic Link
BRCA1 Carrier and survivor, Tara Boughn
T
en years ago, Tara Boughn was living in the fast lane. She was 22, a cosmetologist in Omaha, and she was invincible. At the tender age of 17, Boughn began to put her life in full gear: she enrolled in cosmetology school, started working full-time at 19, and moved to Omaha from her hometown of Schuyler, Neb., at 20 to prove to everyone that should could “do it on her own.” “I was living a fast and furious lifestyle,” she says. “I was walking on the flowers instead of smelling them.” But her fast-paced lifestyle came to an abrupt halt in the spring of 2003. Boughn found a suspicious lump in her right breast. Concerned, but not wanting to slow down and take the time to acknowledge it, Boughn ignored it for a month before she finally told her mother. “I thought to myself, ‘I don’t have time for this,’” says Boughn. An ultrasound was followed by a biopsy, which confirmed the word everyone hopes to never hear: cancer. “I was probably in the doctor’s office for an hour,” recalls Boughn. “But after he said ‘cancer,’ I didn’t hear anything else after that. I went home to my parents and cried and told them I’d never www.ReadOnlineNow.com
do anything bad again.” Boughn underwent a lumpectomy and an auxiliary lymph node dissection followed by chemotherapy and radiation. But the missing link was why a 23-year-old would get breast cancer? No one on her mother’s side had had breast cancer, she had never been pregnant, and the cancer was not hormone-related. Stephen Lemon, M.D., her medical oncologist at Nebraska Methodist Hospital, suggested Boughn undergo genetic testing. Testing revealed that Boughn was a carrier of the BRCA1 genetic mutation. “Women with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 genetic mutation are typically thought to have up to an 85 percent risk of developing breast cancer, but mutation carriers of certain ethnic groups may have a lower lifetime risk,” says Hope Chipman, certified genetic counselor at Nebraska Methodist Hospital. These women also have a 60 percent risk of developing a second breast cancer and up to a 40 percent risk of developing ovarian cancer. Boughn invited other members of her family to get tested. Boughn’s mother tested negative for the gene mutation. After additional research, the gene was found to originate from Boughn’s father’s mother.
Although she had not had breast cancer, she tested positive for BRCA1. As a whole, only five to 10 percent of all breast cancer is thought to be hereditary, says Chipman. Healthcare providers look for the following indicators when determining who should be offered genetic testing for breast cancer: women who have a personal history of breast cancer diagnosed under age 50; personal or family history of breast cancer affecting both breasts (bilateral breast cancer) or both breast and ovarian cancers; a personal or family history of ovarian cancer; a male relative with breast cancer; a history of breast or ovarian cancer under age 50 in two or more close relatives, such as your parents, siblings, and children; a relative with a known BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation; or Ashkenazi (Eastern European) Jewish ancestry. Genetic testing results can help you and your doctor choose appropriate screening or surgical options. It can also help family members learn whether they may be at risk to have a mutation and opt to get tested and take preventive actions. “Anyone (man or woman) who carries a genetic mutation has a 50 percent chance of passing it along Her Living • October/November 2012

Genetic counseling prior to the testing is highly recommended, notes Chipman. “Counseling will educate you about the benefits, risks, and limitations associated with genetic testing and help prepare you
for the potential emotional issues and family dynamics that may follow,” says Chipman. A risk analysis prior to genetic testing can also help determine a person’s likelihood of getting cancer based on their family history, she adds. There has been past concern about how the results will impact their health insurance, notes Chipman. In 2008, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) was passed prohibiting health insurers and employers from discrimination based on genetic test results. “An employer cannot fire you and your insurance carrier cannot drop your insurance,” she says. “In fact, we’re finding that most health insurers are covering the cost of testing, which often exceeds $3,000.” Based on Boughn’s tests, doctors determined that she had a 76 percent risk for reoccurrence. The news weighed heavily on Boughn. She went back for follow-up testing every three
months for the first two years and every six months thereafter. “It was always in the back of my mind,” says Boughn. “There was hardly a day that I didn’t think about it.” Then, at one of her OB/GYN visits, her doctor suggested she consider have a bilateral mastectomy with breast reconstruction. A double mastectomy can reduce a woman’s risk of having a second breast cancer by 90 percent, says Margaret Block, M.D., medical oncologist at Nebraska Cancer Specialists who sees patients at two Alegent Health hospitals—Bergan Mercy Medical Center and Lakeside Hospital. Boughn gave it some thought and in 2007, she decided to take the next step. “I was tired of thinking and stressing about it,” she says. By doing the surgery, Boughn’s risk for a reoccurrence dropped from 76 percent to less than 2 percent. “It was the best decision I could have ever made,” she says. “It has taken a large burden off of my shoulders.” Block explains that many women,

rooke Levey, 31, of Creative Hair Design Salon and Spa is this issue’s featured Stylish Stylist. Her selfdescribed style is classic with a trendy flair. This Omaha native specializes in color. “I love playing with color, it’s such a great way to impact your look. I love learning about the chemistry of why things work, concerning the chemicals, products, and tools we use. I tend to be a nerd in knowledge with useless/useful facts in hair and hair color.” Levey’s clientele is diverse. “I have a great group of high school/college aged kids that always keep me on my toes with their fun, funky fashion. People my age who are making their mark in the Omaha business world, and well-established men and women.” Levey prefers to make personal product recommendations, but has a few favorites. “I find everyone has so many special needs to find the perfect product for them, and I enjoy the quest to hunt it down. I enjoy the Kevin Murphy line for people looking for a more natural alternative. Pureology is a great line that sells itself, giving people the results they are looking for. I am recently testing a new line called REF, it has blown me away. REF, is Swedish, consumer friendly, and has been delivering extraordinary results.”

Tips For Black Friday
B W
The Power of Color
e all have a natural reaction to color—a bright sunny day can make us feel optimistic and energized; a bouquet of red roses will leave us with feelings of love and romance. Ninety percent of the information we receive is through our eyes, so it’s no surprise that the colors in your home can have an affect on your mood. Shades of blue and green have been a recent trend in home décor, and it’s no wonder— these colors help calm us and make us feel serene. Try adding these colors to a bedroom or bathroom if you want to feel relaxed and rested. Turquoise is still a popular color, but now shades of indigo are making an immersion in the design market. A bedding set or shower curtain in these colors are simple changes you can make to bring tranquility to these spaces. Bathrooms and powder rooms are a great space to experiment with color. When choosing your new color, consider an environmentally friendly option with low or zero-VOC (Volatile Organic Compound). “As people become more environmentally conscious, the amount of products available will continue to grow,” says Marian Holden, an interior designer at Designer’s Touch in Omaha. Benjamin Moore’s Natura® No-VOC paint is an odorless acrylic paint containing zero VOC; it comes in three finishes and a variety of colors. If you’re looking to bring energy into a room, try incorporating stimulating colors, like red and violet. Adding splashes of these vibrant colors with a rug, vase, or even throw blanket is a great way to incorporate these colors into a room. “A large area rug with bold colors, and possibly a pattern, can immediately liven up a room,” says Jill Pietrocini of Omaha’s Fluff Your Stuff Interior ReDesign. For bold colors, she also recommends Sherwin Williams’ new product, Emerald™, an interior acrylic latex paint; this self-priming product is stain-resistant and has a lifetime warranty. Want to feel more cheerful? Bring in colors of yellow and orange. Use these hues to energize the mind and inspire fun and laughter. Painting the ceiling yellow in a childs playroom will add a pop of color and a sunny feel to the room; or pair yellow and orange with gray accents to bring sophistication to a room. Adding fresh flower in these shades to a kitchen will brighten the room and lift your spirits. Understanding the power of color is important so that you can set the tone in your house. With just a little paint, a few accessories, and the right products, you can feel happier or more inspired when you walk through the front door.

lack friday is the day right after Thanksgiving and is the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Retailers open their doors as early as 4am offering tremendous “door buster” sale prices to crowds of anxious bargain hunters. In order to ensure shopping efficiency, make a list of what you need at which stores, as well as each store’s opening times. Then plan according. Here are some tips to make your Black Friday a little easier: • Use the buddy system. By shopping in groups, you can have people to help wait in line while another goes back for something on their list. Or one of you can run to get refreshments. • Use store maps to plot out which departments you need to hit and how to move between them. • Don’t be distracted by items that will throw off your budget or time constraints. • Remember that you should still be on guard for potential thieves. Be mindful of where you store your finds, and know that people may be watching. Also, never leave your purse or wallet unattended. • Check out sites like blackfriday.com that offer online ads and deals for major stores like Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and Target. • Know your limits; set a realistic budget with a little room for flexibility. If you saved some here, you can spend it there. Black Friday is November 23rd. But don’t forget, there are also plenty of good deals online during Cyber Monday, which begins November 26th.
