DRIVING CUSTOMER SATISFACTION Mohammad Rahman Brings Global Expertise to ONYX Automotive Story by Tamsen Butler // Photography by Bill Sitzmann

O

NYX Automotive’s MINI & PreOwned Sales Manager Mohammad Rahman had quite the interesting journey around the globe prior to settling down in the heartland. Originally from Bangladesh, he also attended school in Switzerland. From there, he moved a couple more times before finally landing in Omaha.

It was while in school in Switzerland that he met his wife, Jennifer, who hails from Omaha. After Switzerland, he moved to Atlanta to finish his studies, but wound up in Omaha to be with Jennifer. In that sense, it’s safe to say he followed his heart to Omaha—and is now at the heart of pre-owned luxury vehicle sales. He studied hospitality in school, which translates well to his career as someone who enthusiastically serves clients and supports his team. His career in the automotive industry started in 2006. Originally, he joined the industry after a friend suggested he should give it a try; much to Rahman’s delight, he discovered that not only did he enjoy the work—he was also good at it. “What started as a shortterm solution became a long-term solution!” Rahman said with a laugh. He’s happy to work within the luxury vehicle space. He admires BMWs in particular, because BMW is “a unique brand,” he said. “BMWs are one of the best, high-performing vehicles in the world.” He further clarified that he is impressed with German engineering. Rahman truly enjoys the work he does as a sales manager. “I like the challenge of helping people find what they’re looking for,” he said. In his job, he helps the sales team improve, helps with inventory, and assists with getting cars ready for the lot. Manufacturers have very specific guidelines that need to be followed before a used vehicle can be placed for sale on a lot, and it’s Rahman’s job to ensure those guidelines are precisely met. Before working with pre-owned vehicles, he worked with new car sales. He racked up nearly 15 years of experience working with new cars before switching to preowned vehicles. He also manages some of the sales team—a responsibility he relishes. “Managing can be challenging, but I like to take challenges on,” he said. “Everyone on my team tries to exceed their goals month in and month out.” Rahman has a reputation among the team as an honest and friendly professional who is always willing to help.

When he takes time off from work, he enjoys traveling and exploring the world. Switzerland, Australia, and Cancún are his favorite destinations. He said Switzerland is just as beautiful as depicted in the media, “and the people are so nice!” he added. In his spare time, Rahman enjoys cooking, trying different cuisines, and being active outdoors with activities like biking, cricket, and soccer. He can often be found indulging in long drives with his family or shopping. Rahman collects watches and boasts an impressive collection. Rahman’s range of travel experiences have equipped him with an impressive roster of languages. While he is fluent in English, he also grew up speaking Bengali. During his time attending school in Switzerland, he spoke “Hochdeutsch,” or High German, which is a German dialect spoken in Switzerland.

“ONYX IS A GREAT COMPANY; IT’S FAMILY ORIENTED, AND THEY TAKE CARE OF THEIR PEOPLE. WE ALL HELP EACH OTHER OUT AND ONYX APPRECIATES WHAT WE DO ON A DAILY BASIS.” MOHAMMAD RAHMAN Rahman enjoys working at ONYX and feels that the leadership of the company truly values their employees. “ONYX is a great company; it’s family oriented, and they take care of their people. We all help each other out and ONYX appreciates what we do on a daily basis,” he said. Clients can expect to feel at ease when working with Rahman, as his easy communication style and innate sophistication help him excel in his role on the ONYX team. His years of experience and eagerness to help clients shines through in all of his interactions. This well-traveled, multilingual professional is happy to stay on his current career path and is pleased to continue his work with ONYX. “I’m never disappointed to come to work,” he said, echoing a sentiment shared by many of the team members at ONYX. YOUR CAR’S SEASONAL SAVIOR ONYX Express Wash Keeps Your Vehicle Gleaming Story by Natalie Veloso // Photography by Bill Sitzmann

A

s part of the ONYX Automotive family, ONYX Express Wash guarantees that your car will be thoroughly cleaned inside and out with the greatest care. However, upgrading to the unlimited Gloss Club combines this fantastic service with the benefits of a complete monthly membership, all at an unbeatable price. “Our associates and their approach to customer service is set along the ONYX guidelines,” noted Isaac Merkley, ONYX Express Wash Manager. “We believe in taking care of our customers and providing the best in-class service they deserve.” That’s why a Gloss Club membership runs just $25 a month, and a prepaid, one-year membership can now be purchased for $250—with two months for free. A subscription at a competing wash could cost a customer as much as $49.99 a month. These days, it seems that every car wash in town is offering monthly subscriptions for their washes. ONYX Express Wash outshines them all in terms of services included in every wash and the attention to detail given to every part of the experience. “With membership to our ONYX Gloss Club, our members get a fantastic wash in a clean, state-of-the-art facility, and access to our free vacuums,” explained Merkley. Our members can wash as many times as they want, all month long!” As winter weather emerges, the need for regular washes is greater than ever. With this level of service, paying only $10 per wash is already a steal—but for a monthly payment of only $15 more, the Gloss Club combats the unpredictability of the season’s road conditions whenever you need it. Getting the salt and sand off your vehicle as soon as possible helps prevent rust and other damage. As part of your ONYX Gloss Club membership, you’ll have access to jump the line using the Quick Pass Lane, ensuring you’ll be finished with your wash and on your way in the blink of an eye. An attendant will assist you onto the conveyor belt and answer any questions before your car wash experience begins. From there, all you have to do is place your car in neutral and sit back and relax as your wash begins with a grime soak that makes sure even the toughest stains disappear under the Microfiber Wash-N-Clean and highpressure rinse that is to come. Multiple layers of protection will be placed on your vehicle to ensure it’s safe from the worst weather the Midwest has to offer. In addition to a Rainbow Coat Protect Finish paint shield and a Rain-X Glass water repellent, a very thorough

underbody wash is done so that no matter how much mud, snow, gravel, or rock salt your vehicle endures, it will continue running smoothly through the season. Special attention is paid to your bumpers, thanks to the cleaning jets specifically designed for both them and your wheels, which will come out of the wash shining. After every part of your vehicle is clean, a hot wax application provides a final layer of protection before you finish your wash and cruise through a dual heated, 16-turbo dryer. When the exterior of your car has been taken care of, all that’s left to do is make sure the interior receives the same quality treatment. Upon exiting the wash, take a left and park on the north side of the wash to access the complementary vacuums that will ensure not a crumb remains on your floor or seats. “Our ONYX Express Wash is exclusive to ONYX customers and to people who work or live in the Heartwood Preserve area, which is where ONYX is located,” Merkley added. “That means shorter—or often no—lines!”

“That means shorter—or often no—lines!” -Isaac Merkley With the possibility of snow hanging over Omaha for almost half the calendar year, it’s important to keep your vehicle wellmaintained to ensure it survives months of driving over rock salt that can cling to every part of your vehicle. Regularly cruising through ONYX’s Express Wash can help you do that. With an unlimited membership, you never have to worry about how often you have been visiting ONYX’s Express Wash. “Having the membership, rather than coming through for a wash here and there, ultimately saves you money and allows you to wash whenever you need to,” Merkley said. Customers enrolled in the Basic Wash club are eligible to upgrade to a Gloss membership at any time to access these additional benefits. The wash is open to ONYX Automotive clients any time between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For only $25 a month, the Gloss Club at ONYX Express Wash guarantees that your car will be thoroughly cleaned with the greatest care as many times as necessary for you—and your vehicle—during the long Nebraskan winter. NAVIGATING LIFE IN STYLE

The Putjenters’ Adventures With Their Land Rover Defender Story by Kara Schweiss // Photography by Bill Sitzmann

J

eff and Melinda Putjenter are always on the go, both professionally and personally. She’s a district manager for The North Face, the retailer known for its highperformance outdoor clothing, footwear, and equipment. He’s a master tiler and business owner. They both enjoy various activities, from mountain biking and fat-tire biking to golf, so they wanted a vehicle with generous cargo space and practical features for a variety of conditions—but also one with style and maybe even a little pizzazz. “We like to go outside to do a lot of things,” Melinda said. “And I don’t want to look like every Tom, Dick, and Harry.” The couple’s new SUV, a 2023 Land Rover Defender, provides everything they need and is definitely out of the ordinary. “We get compliments on it all the time because we went with the Tasman Blue. One thing I love about that is how Land Rover has a legacy around that color, because it was one of the very first original blues that they had when they first started, and they brought it back,” she said. “This Tasman Blue, it’s a very unique color.” “And with that white leather interior, it pops,” Jeff said. The couple has been a fan of the Land Rover/Range Rover brand for years— they’ve owned models including Velar, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Autobiography in the past—which brought them to ONYX in the first place, and has kept them coming back when it’s time for their next new vehicle. The Putjenters previously considered a Defender a few years ago, Melinda said, but “they didn’t have all the models yet because it was brand new.” They loved the Velar SVAutobiography they ended up purchasing (“an incredible vehicle,” in Jeff’s words) and looked into buying out the lease earlier this year, Jeff said. “But Melinda wanted to get into something that was a little bit higher, a little bit bigger, more room,” he explained. “So, that’s why we went with the Defender, which we are both really happy with.” The vehicle easily accommodates Melinda’s luggage for work travel, and there’s a handy feature that’s proven to be perfect for when Jeff picks her up from the airport, Melinda said. “A luxury feature that was unexpected— that we absolutely love—is that the center

console is a cooler,” she said. Jeff added, “When you’re picking your wife up from a long flight and happen to have a nice, ice-cold beverage for her to open up on the way home, it’s very convenient.” The Defender has proven to be roomy enough for biking gear and outdoor equipment. “Unfortunately, we are in the middle of doing construction in our house, so we haven’t had the opportunity to get both of our golf clubs in the back yet,” Jeff said. “But that is soon to come.” Winter weather is impending, too, and while other Midwesterners may dread getting on the road when the flakes start to fall, the couple said they’re actually looking forward to driving the Defender in the snow. The Defender is also built for rugged terrain—perfect for expected future Colorado trips to visit friends—and the couple said they are looking forward to “playing around” with the different functions of the vehicle’s suspension, which can accommodate conditions like gravel or water. It’s also a good SUV for passengers, Melinda said, with its third row of seats. It even has comfort and convenience features like ample power sources for chargers. The full skylight has also been an unexpected hit with several friends and family members. “It adds a little bit more light into the back,” she said. “I have never sat in the backseat, but a lot of people comment about it when they’re in the back,” Jeff said. “They’re like, ‘Oh, wow! That’s super cool.’” The Putjenters said they’ve appreciated the ONYX team’s assistance in helping them acclimate to their new vehicle, from programming the garage door opener to teaching them about the Defender’s many functions and how to access them. “I drove the car for about two weeks and then made the appointment [where they] came out and showed me all these features,” Melinda said. “Every single person at ONYX…just the attention to detail,” Jeff added. “I love that specialized attention,” Melinda said. “If I have a question or I need something, I have somebody who knows me and can contact me personally.” For more information, visit onyxautomotive.com.

THE MERCATO Where Fine Italian Beef Meets Nebraska’s Plate Story by Natalie Veloso // Photography by Bill Sitzmann

F

ar from the rolling hills of the Piedmont region, a local culinary experience brings a premier taste of Italy to the welcoming folks of Nebraska. Piedmontese beef, renowned for its unparalleled tenderness, dietary benefits, and superior quality, has journeyed to the Cornhusker State and found its home in The Mercato, a Lincolnbased butcher shop and retail store that has now extended its presence to Omaha. As the butcher skillfully cuts into a marbled cut of Piedmontese beef, it’s like a slice of the Piedmont region’s reputation—a land celebrated for its culinary artistry and fine wines—has been transplanted to the Great Plains. This relationship is not only tantalizing but also convenient, offering Nebraskans the opportunity to savor the essence of Italy without the need for a transatlantic trip. It’s a captivating journey from pasture to plate, made all the more personal by the locality and satisfaction of having your beef cut right before your eyes. The Mercato partners with Certified Piedmontese, a Nebraska-based beef company with headquarters in northeast Lincoln. The company takes pride in offering their beef served fresh from the butcher’s case at The Mercato’s three brick-andmortar locations in Lincoln and Omaha. A choice assortment of premium specialty beef can also be packaged and shipped to customers across the nation. With a lineage dating back to the 1600s, the Piedmontese cattle breed from the foothills of the Alps is naturally lean in its genetic composition. An inactive myostatin gene results in increased muscle mass and minimal fat development. Certified Piedmontese affirms that this breed remains exceptionally rare today, constituting less than one percent of the total cattle population in North America. While Piedmontese beef is gaining popularity and making more frequent appearances throughout Nebraska, Certified Piedmontese guarantees responsible cattle raising on its family-owned ranches across the Midwest. Their stringent verification process ensures the cattle are all natural; they are never administered antibiotics, steroids, or hormones, producing fine beef that doesn’t compromise on flavor or tenderness. Piedmontese beef’s nutritional profile speaks for itself. It stands out with fewer calories, less fat, and higher protein per ounce than other breeds, making it an exceptional choice for those seeking lean protein in their diet. A serving of Certified Piedmontese beef contains over 20% fewer calories than salmon, yet offers 10% more protein. This rare Ital-

ian breed is nutritious and full-flavored, safeguarding its traditional heritage despite its international journey. Its leanness and tenderness ensures the highest quality for those with discerning tastes.

“OUR VISION IS TO BE THE TRUSTED SOURCE OF NATURAL, SUSTAINABLE PIEDMONTESE BEEF THAT DELIVERS AUTHENTICITY AND HONESTY IN EVERY INTERACTION, UPHOLDING QUALITY AND INTEGRITY BEYOND THE BEEF INDUSTRY, FROM THE RANCHES AND LAND WE WORK WITH TO HOW WE HELP OUR CUSTOMERS LIVE A HEALTHY LIFE.” CERTIFIED PIEDMONTESE “Our vision is to be the trusted source of natural, sustainable Piedmontese beef that delivers authenticity and honesty in every interaction, upholding quality and integrity beyond the beef industry, from the ranches and land we work with to how we help our customers live a healthy life,” Certified Piedmontese notes on their website. In addition to the Certified Piedmontese beef sold at every Mercato location, an array of sustainable proteins, locally sourced dry ingredients, house-made goods, and more are available for instore purchase, all meeting the same standards as their beef. What sets Certified Piedmontese apart from the vast majority of similar companies nationwide is their commitment to maintaining three dedicated retail shops as integral aspects of their business, directly providing customers with the freshest possible beef products right from the butcher’s counter. In 2020, Certified Piedmontese introduced Casa Bovina, a rustic, Italianinspired steakhouse serving their own renowned high-quality beef, where customers can enjoy an expertly prepared meal by reservation only. The restaurant’s menu evolves with the changing seasons to ensure the best culinary experience year-round. Casa Bovina is conveniently situated on the second floor of The Mercato’s North Lincoln location. At The Mercato’s North and South Lincoln locations, visitors can try more

DRIVING GOOD

ONYX Automotive’s Driving Force for a Better Omaha Story by Lindsey Hinchcliff-Crotty // Images Provided

H

ello! I’d like to welcome you to this new recurring column highlighting our Driving Good initiative. I’m Lindsey Hinchcliff-Crotty, leading the company’s efforts with this exciting new initiative. I’m also the Foundation Director for the H+H Group. I manage our family foundation in collaboration with my dad, Steve Hinchcliff, and brother, Jeff Hinchcliff, owners of ONYX Automotive. I’ve been with the company for nearly 1.5 years and am excited to make a difference in the Omaha community. For 15 years, my career was in ecommerce retail, which included several management positions. My roles spanned positions at Hayneedle.com and Oriental Trading Company, with a focus on site merchandising, digital marketing, and content marketing. As I grew my career, my passion for a positive customer experience and team collaboration evolved. Analyzing a customer’s online shopping behavior is critical to developing a best-in-class shopping experience. It’s like helping a customer as they walk through the doors of a brick-and-mortar store—greeting them with a “Hello, what can I help you find today?” and taking them to the aisle with the products they’re looking for. No one person can develop this top-notch online shopping experience; it takes a team with a whole lot of cross-departmental collaboration to ultimately convert the customer to a sale. While my passion for customer service and team collaboration has remained steadfast, I’ve grown a deeper aspiration for helping people and joining forces across a network of teams. ONYX Automotive is part of a family of brands that has served Omaha for over nine

decades. With such longstanding community roots, we understand the importance of giving back to a community that has supported our business throughout the years. That’s why we’ve embarked on an initiative that’s close to our hearts: Driving Good. Now, as the leader of Driving Good, I’m joining ONYX Automotive’s clients, associates, and the greater Omaha community to make a larger impact on the lives of many. I hope to inspire you to act and “Drive Good” in your community, too. I look forward to sharing exciting highlights of Driving Good and the ways ONYX is making a difference in the Omaha metro. The mission of Driving Good is to be a force for good in the Omaha metro and ultimately drive positive change in our community for generations to come. This mission can’t be done alone. That’s why we are partnering with local nonprofits, our associates, and clients to significantly impact those who need it most. At ONYX, clients are not only purchasing a luxury car, but investing in their community. A percentage of every car sale goes directly to local nonprofits we partner with. Jeff Hinchcliff, President of the H+H Group, shares: “We’ve always been a strong supporter of the Omaha metro community, but now we are elevating our support to create greater awareness while putting a name to it. Driving Good strives to impact our community through the purposeful programs we will launch under this initiative.” One of our most recent Driving Good campaigns was held in October 2023. ONYX hosted a food drive and partnered with NeighborGood Food Pantry in Sarpy County. It’s important to note that

32.5% of the population in Sarpy County has low food access, according to a 2022 Sarpy/Cass Health Department Minority Healthy Study. Melissa Nelson, Executive Director at NeighborGood, shares: “Sarpy County continues to grow in neighborhoods and businesses, yet food insecurity is still faced by many of our neighbors. We’ve continued to see unprecedented demand these past two years, which has led to extremely empty shelves. Community drives, such as the one hosted by ONYX Automotive, will positively impact those who work, live, and shop in Sarpy County.” ONYX raised over 500 pounds of canned food and essential items to support those in need in Sarpy County. It was astonishing to see how ONYX associates and clients came together in only two weeks to make such a positive impact. The food drive also came with a dose of fun for ONYX associates—we challenged them to build a sculpture from all their donations! The team got creative and designed the word “ONYX” made from canned food. In the next edition of ONYX Magazine, I will be sharing more ways ONYX’s Driving Good is partnering with other local nonprofit organizations to continue to foster a strong community. I hope that learning more about Driving Good has given you that warm and fuzzy feeling inside. I know I feel that way when giving back to the Omaha metro community I’ve called home my entire life. Let me challenge you, too—let’s be a force for good in our community, together! For more information, visit onyxautomotive.com/driving-good.

ONYX RAISED OVER 500 POUNDS OF CANNED FOOD AND ESSENTIAL ITEMS TO SUPPORT THOSE IN NEED IN SARPY COUNTY. IT WAS ASTONISHING TO SEE HOW ONYX ASSOCIATES AND CLIENTS CAME TOGETHER IN ONLY TWO WEEKS TO MAKE SUCH A POSITIVE IMPACT.

ROAD TRIP

CITY OF FOUNTAINS Embark on a Kansas City Weekend Getaway this Season Story by Natalie McGovern // Images Provided

B

eyond its renowned barbecue and spirited Chiefs fandom, Kansas City, Missouri, possesses a number of hidden gems waiting to be explored—all at an ideal road trip distance. I ventured down to Kansas City for a weekend getaway at the height of the Chiefs’ football season, traipsing around the unique, historic city full of posh experiences with plenty to see and do. No, you’re not in New York or Chicago, but KC comes pretty close to a bustling metropolis, offering sightseeing, nightlife, and recreation all in one. Only a few hours away, cruising down in style in an ONYX luxury vehicle is the ideal way to make the trip, no matter the season. Known as the “Paris of the Old-World,” the city is brimming with arts, culture, and exceptional barbecue year-round. For art and history lovers alike, be sure to check out the many museums, fountains—over 200 of them!—and iconic landmarks, such as Crown Center and Union Station. Adventure abounds when visiting KC, so prepare to do lots of walking to tour all it has to offer. Here, you can go at your own pace, so I decided to take it slow and enjoy good food and wine while taking in the architecture and sights. The best part? There are several towns within 30 to 40 minutes of KC that you can visit along the way. Arriving at Union Station, you’ll be greeted by the Henry Wollman Bloch Fountain, a landmark fountain with 232 jets of water modeled after the Bellagio in Las Vegas. Usually decked out for the holidays, this historic depot is now the center hub for large city events, Chiefs merch, and a restaurant named Harvey’s with a balcony overlooking the station. From ornate chandeliers to classic Beaux-Arts architecture, Union Station is the hallmark of the city. At Crown Center, enjoy shopping at a number of stores and grab lunch at Fritz’s, the family-friendly diner where food arrives by toy train. This restaurant may be a standard burger joint, but it pays homage to the nostalgia of yesteryear.

Chiefs Nation When it’s game time, the city truly comes alive—no itinerary necessary. Catch a game and get loud with the crowd at the Chiefs’ headquarters, Arrowhead Stadium, for the full NFL game experience. You may catch sightings of your favorites—like Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce—en route, or even catch a glimpse of one famous pop star. Nightlife/Fine Dining One of my good friends resides in KC, so she clued me into some of the best places the locals like to visit. Farina on Baltimore Avenue is the eatery you want to hit up for authentic Italian cuisine. Prepared with care, their dishes are signature, with fresh ingredients like fish and shellfish flown in daily for modern Italian fare. If you’re looking for an upscale, romantic atmosphere, try the franchise McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood & Steaks in its rotunda stained glass dome, etched with the Missouri flag and a rooftop terrace for outdoor seating. It’s a hot spot in the Plaza for a night out. For a special occasion or anniversary dinner, savor one of Kansas City’s best steakhouses, Golden Ox. It’s a fine dining experience you won’t want to miss, and despite many celebrity sightings, this locale holds its own merit. The menu at this chophouse is exquisite, down to its dry-aged Porterhouse and Drover cuts, delectable steak tartare, and my favorite, Oysters Rockefeller. Prices are comparable to 801 Chophouse in Omaha, and the food is simply divine. Wine Tour Of the many wineries in Kansas City, try spending an afternoon lounging at the Amigoni Urban Winery, which offers a list of California dry wines and an assortment of goat and beef cheese and sausage plates from Green Dirt Farm. Other local favorites are Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant at the Plaza and standout cocktails offered at The Campground.

ROAD TRIP Arts & Culture A plethora of Spanish Revival, Neoclassical, Italianate Renaissance, and Art Deco structures scattered throughout the city reflect their European influences. The Mill Creek Fountain, built in 1910 in France and shipped to KC from New York, can be found in the upscale shopping district, Country Club Plaza. The Nelson-Atkins Museum houses an encyclopedic collection of art from around the world. Ranked as one of the 10 Best Architectural Marvels by TIME Magazine, the Bloch Galleries building displays a range of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces. Admission is free. For music aficionados, you’ll find plenty of history in the Jazz District at 18th and Vine. Visit the American Jazz Museum to discover some of the great musical legacies. For a fine arts experience, catch a Pops concert or other regular programming by the Kansas City Symphony. Lodging Of course, no trip is complete without a stay at one of the many beautiful boutique hotels or Airbnbs, such as Hotel Kansas City. The historic Art Deco-inspired hotel was remodeled after a 1920s club. Check out its gorgeous stained glass mural in the Tudor ballroom. Southmoreland, found one block and a half from the Plaza, was built in 1913 and has 12 guest houses you can opt to book your stay. Just for Kicks Don’t forget to stop at Jowler Creek Vineyard & Winery for a wine hayrack ride on your way back home. The vineyard gives off a rustic vibe and offers various smoky oak barrel wines. On the outskirts of Kansas City in Weston, Pirtle is another winery well worth the trip. Be sure to sample their mead or popular blueberry champagne. I popped a bottle on my birthday when I visited a few years back. The perfect road trip lets you try a little bit of everything—and Kansas City awaits with plenty of activities, food, nightlife, museums, music, and more. No matter the time of year or the ever-changing Midwest weather, a weekend KC trip is just the right way to heat up the season. For more information, go to visitkc.com.

FUNNY BONE COMEDY CLUB Laughter Takes Center Stage in Omaha Story by Natalie Veloso // Photography by Bill Sitzmann

A

gentle murmur of conversations and clinks of glasses punctuate the atmosphere of a dimly lit room. A sense of camaraderie falls among the audience, fostered by collective anticipation as a new comedian takes the stage. For the ensuing hour or so, the spotlighted individual becomes the captain of the ship, skillfully navigating the treacherous waters of stand-up comedy. It’s a commitment they bear on their shoulders throughout the night’s comical journey—a commitment to cultivate smiles and robust laughter. The world of comedy, however, is no laughing matter—the path to success is fraught with uncertainty. Nonetheless, Omaha remains a sanctuary for comedy where the laughter never seems to run dry, with much credit to Funny Bone Comedy Club. The beloved establishment stands as a vital pillar of Omaha’s entertainment scene. It’s a place where comedy lovers meet, mingle, and laugh. Budding comedians find their voices, and seasoned humorists keep the city in stitches. This hub of endless laughter is just a fiveminute drive from ONYX Automotive’s West Omaha dealership. The impressive Funny Bone venue can accommodate up to 300 comedy enthusiasts at a time, hosting both local comedians and headlining acts from across the nation throughout the week. Yet, Funny Bone is not your average comedy club—the versatile space has much more to offer. “We host a variety of events outside of regular comedy shows, like fundraisers, holiday parties, corporate outings, and even an occasional wedding reception,” explained Daisy Curtis, Assistant General Manager of Funny Bone. Another feature that has earned the Omaha comedy club its reputation is its restaurant, equipped with a full-service bar and attentive waitstaff. Visitors rave

online about its expansive menu, which offers an array of options you can order from your server before or during the show. From a diverse selection of appetizers and salads, to satisfying sandwiches and delightful desserts, the menu caters to a wide range of tastes, and the bar menu follows suit. When combined with the uproarious performances delivered by some of the finest comedians, the atmosphere nurtures a sense of comfort and community. A night at Funny Bone is ideal for enjoying with family, friends, or as a memorable date night out. A staple in Omaha’s comedy scene, Funny Bone has already established itself as a local household name. Nevertheless, first-timers at the comedy club are greeted with open arms and encouraged to become a part of the growing community.

“New visitors can expect a night of food, drinks, and all the laughs they can handle.” Daisy Curtis “New visitors can expect a night of food, drinks, and all the laughs they can handle,” Curtis enthused. “Everyone has a server that takes care of them throughout the show, while they get to enjoy a nationally touring headliner.” This guest-centric approach crafts a personalized, quality experience. At Funny Bone, patrons are invited to sit back, relax, and savor top-notch entertainment in an atmosphere that exudes warmth and familiarity. The Village Pointe location is just one of numerous venues scattered throughout the nation. Funny Bone is a chain of comedy clubs situated in various cities, each boasting its own rotating roster of

stand-up comedians and performers. The inaugural club, founded in 1982 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was the brainchild of co-founders Mitch Kutash and Gerald Kubach. Funny Bone establishments across the country have hosted comedic superstars since their early careers, such as Dave Chapelle, Ellen Degeneres, Jerry Seinfeld, Tim Allen, and Gabriel Iglesias. Operating in Omaha since 1988, the first Funny Bone was located off of 114th and Dodge until 2004, when the venue relocated to its current address in Village Pointe. The accessibility of the Village Pointe site has played a pivotal role in consistently attracting crowds ever since. The national acclaim enjoyed by Funny Bone is well-earned. The establishment brings a distinctive flavor to Omaha’s comedy scene, prioritizing the quality of its showcased performers and simultaneously offering a platform for lesserknown talents to gain exposure. “We host eight to 10 Clash of the Comics shows each year for local comedians to get a chance to become regular hosts at the club and get feedback about their sets,” Curtis noted. “For the more experienced comedians, we give opportunities to feature whenever possible and even headline!” These components cultivate a unique community built around laughter, cuisine, beverages, and entertainment you won’t find anywhere else. Curtis guarantees an evening filled with enjoyment no matter where your comedic taste lies. “We have a different flavor of comedy each week!” To check out the lineup and buy tickets, visit omaha.funnybone.com.

SURPRISE, SURPRISE BMW X1 DEFIES ALL EXPECTATIONS Story by Dwain Hebda // Photography Courtesy of Onyx Automotive

I

n a world where so many products fall short of the hype, it’s nice to know there are still some pleasant surprises out there. Exhibit A—the BMW X1, which runs contrary to nearly every expectation one can have. Vehicles this small aren’t supposed to pack the power the X1 does, nor are they supposed to offer such a robust suite of onboard electronics and technology. And while no BMW will ever be mistaken for a starter vehicle, the price tag of the X1 will make many people do a double take—in a good way. Dillon Johnson, Sales Manager at ONYX Automotive, said the combination of features, performance, and price have spurred the popularity of the sporty model. “The X1 is going to be our smallest SUV offering. It’s going to be a size down from our midsize SUV, which is our X3,” he said. “Yet, it still gives our customers that nice sporty, sleek design look while still getting a good amount of space for their daily life needs. It’s been a really hot vehicle for us since it came out. The few that we’ve gotten have come and gone almost as fast as we got them. It’s a great all-around vehicle.” The base xDrive28i model boasts a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine generating 241 horsepower, all-wheel drive, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, standard. An optional M Sport package boosts performance and handling via an adaptive suspension system and steering wheelmounted shift paddles. However, upgrade to the M35i, and you get a 312-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, adaptive suspension, and upgraded brakes, harnessing all the brawn BMW engineers are known for in a tidy petite package. “The one thing with BMW is it’s a very driver-focused vehicle,” Johnson said. “That’s really what puts us ahead of everybody else. The X1 is nimble—it’s a lot easier to swallow up the curves; get in and out of parking spaces. They’ve also redone the suspension. It’s a lot smoother. You’re going to have a lot less body roll, but it also makes it a very fun and sporty drive.”

The auto press has raved about the sportiness and feel of the X1, which will appeal to motorists, be they new or familiar with BMW products. The range of color options also speaks to those with an adventurous spirit at any age.

“I think what they’ve done that’s really cool, is they have a design offering where you can get more of a luxury look, while still having sporty lines on the vehicle.” Dillon Johnson “I think what they’ve done that’s really cool, is they have a design offering where you can get more of a luxury look, while still having sporty lines on the vehicle,” Johnson said. “It’s a vehicle that gives you the opportunity to express some personality. You also have the option of an X1 M35i, which is going to be a little bit more souped-up engine, little sportier seats, and a sportier appearance. “It’s different; it’s brand new. BMW is more cutting-edge with their new headlights, tail lights, and interior lights. It’s a great everyday vehicle. It’s comfortable. It can be fun and sporty when you want it to be and it can be tame when you need to use it for your grocery run.” Inside, the driver is surrounded by technology, starting with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch central information display, providing touchcentric control. An available Live Cockpit Professional system delivers a headup display and video augmented reality technology console. In addition, the X1 comes standard with active blind spot detection, lane departure warning, and frontal collision warning with city collision mitigation that activates brake intervention at speeds up to 35 miles per hour. “On the interior, they put in the new iDrive 8 system, which is going to have the nice, curved display that goes almost all the way across that dashboard,” Johnson said. “For the audiophile, you have the Harman Kardon system that’s available in the premium package. They’ve gone so far as adding a semi-active massaging seat.”

FEATURE THE X1 REALLY OPENS THE DOOR FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE LOOKING TO GET INTO BMW, BECAUSE IT’S PRICED TO BE WITHIN AN AFFORDABLE BUDGET. DILLON JOHNSON

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the price— the entry X1 starts below $40,000, Johnson said, while the beefier M35i is about $50,000 before add-ons, which is more than competitive with other brands and provides a ready entry point for newcomers to get into their first BMW. “There’s definitely a market out there for that size of a vehicle. We’ve had two employees pick them up right away, both of them being new to BMW, but who love being around them,” Johnson said. “We’ve had some people that have been new to the brand until they saw that X1 come in. We have had some returning customers, too, that opted to go with the X1, so it’s really been a good spread of customers we’re seeing come into the brand. “There are a lot of people that want to drive the brand but don’t want to pay $120,000 for a 7 series. The X1 really opens the door for people who are looking to get into BMW, because it’s priced to be within an affordable budget. I think they’ve done a really good job of covering the full spectrum of customers.” For more information, visit onyxautomotive.com.

DEFENDER TRAILS

WELCOME TO DEFENDER TRAILS! Story and Photography by Rob Gibson

A

s a customer and brand enthusiast turned ONYX associate, I’m excited to reveal a new staple to our ONYX magazine: Defender Trails. The Land Rover Defender is designed for adventure in all territories. Today, I am introducing myself and building the groundwork for Defender Trails to showcase the unparalleled qualities of this fantastic vehicle. My role at ONYX is in Sales Support, where I lead a few teams to help educate our customers on the brands we provide. I had a very long and rewarding career in the information technology world before joining the team at ONYX. The blending of technology and a passion for our brands was the breeding ground for a perfect role for me. I spend my days solving issues, leading my teams, and helping people. It may be that I have lived in the plains of Nebraska long enough for me to develop a bit of a romance around watching the sun rise over the Rockies. I never paid much attention to this daily ritual when I lived in the canyons of Utah as a child. Short of a few mornings camping, or elk hunting at elevation, I was rarely up to witness the event. Fast forward to the fall of my life, when I found that some celestial events, even the simple ones, mean so much more. For 10 days this past October, I rekindled that romance as I watched the sun rise and set over the states of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. Given what you have read so far, it’s not a coincidence that the genesis for this adventure was the annular eclipse that raced across the western states. My wife Erica and I live an adventurous lifestyle. Much of our lifestyle involves mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, snowshoeing, and using our UTV to see places that most won’t ever see. We are very fortunate to live in a retired YMCA camp with thousands of trees and wildlife around us. We tend to spend a lot of time right outside our back door, filling our lives with many mini adventures. When it comes to taking our journey beyond our backyard, we have what I consider to be the perfect lifestyle vehicle for us: a Land

WHEN IT COMES TO TAKING OUR JOURNEY BEYOND OUR BACKYARD, WE HAVE WHAT I CONSIDER TO BE THE PERFECT LIFESTYLE VEHICLE FOR US: A LAND ROVER DEFENDER. ACTING AS MORE THAN JUST A VEHICLE FOR CONVEYANCE, THE DEFENDER IS AN AMAZING TOOL THAT FUNCTIONS AS AN ENTERTAINER, PACK MULE, AND BASE CAMP. Rob Gibson Rover Defender. Acting as more than just a vehicle for conveyance, the Defender is an amazing tool that functions as an entertainer, pack mule, and base camp. When Erica and I venture off the beaten path, our Defender is called to duty to haul our equipment—we took our mountain bikes on this most recent trip. Riding our bikes in a few of the National Parks, we found that getting on two wheels gives you a much more intimate experience, and I highly recommend that anyone give it a try. You will often see our kayaks loaded on the roof rack as we find local lakes to paddle. For some of our adventures, we take our bikes, kayaks, dogs, and our UTV to the mountains to have fun. Without a doubt, the Defender is the right choice for us. When we embarked on this last adventure, we had a focal point of watching the annular eclipse, seeking the perfect spot for the best possible view. Once we narrowed down the place, we then built 10 days of adventure around the event with stops at seven national parks: Great Sand Dunes, Mesa Verde, North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, and Black Canyon of the

Gunnison. The Defender easily traversed the primitive roads of Great Sand Dunes National Park, which are little more than a path in the sand leading from one stream to the next. At the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, we bounced from boulder to boulder on the Point Sublime trail. The Defender blends utility with luxury amazingly well. It has a high seating position with unobstructed sight lines that allow for confident off-road travels, but it also has the high-class appointments that many buyers look for in a daily driver. With the Defender, offpavement doesn’t have to come at the expense of comfort. The amazing diversity of our trip showcases the versatility of the Defender. We often drove before the sun came up, as well as after sundown. We encountered 100-degree days contrasted by snow in the mountains. The engine pulled strong, regardless of the elevation ranging from 1,100 feet to just shy of 13,000 feet above sea level. Throughout our trip, which spanned 3,065 miles, we developed a greater appreciation for our Defender, even after averaging 300 miles a day of seat time. What started as a trip to watch an annular eclipse became an unforgettable trip of experiencing some of America’s greatest treasures. We witnessed the eclipse, but it was nowhere near as amazing as the places we saw. Our trusted Defender performed its duties with little fuss, no matter what we threw at it. I can’t think of a better vehicle with which to embark on such a trip. I invite you back to read the next issue of our ONYX magazine, where you will find a detailed recap of our next adventure. The Destination Defender weekend festival for Defender owners and enthusiasts will be taking place in south Texas at the Iron Horse Ranch. My wife Erica and I will take the vehicle down to experience how Land Rover North America blends southern hospitality with British formality at this festival celebrating the Defender lifestyle. It should be a smashing good time! For more information, visit onyxautomotive.com.

WITH THE DEFENDER, OFF-PAVEMENT DOESN’T HAVE TO COME AT THE EXPENSE OF COMFORT. Rob Gibson
