SARPY COUNTY VISITORS GUIDE
BELLEVUE Haworth Park
t’s easy to feel right at home in Nebraska’s oldest settlement—and Sarpy County’s largest city. Originating as a fur-trading post in 1822, Bellevue earned its name from trappers who admired the city’s “beautiful view” of the wooded bluffs surrounding the majestic Missouri River. While certainly a lot has changed over the years, this remarkable view remains. One prime location is Haworth Park, where recreational trails wind along the riverfront and lead into western Sarpy County and Omaha. Adjacent to Haworth is the American Heroes Park featuring a 9-11 Memorial, the Heroes Plaza, a pond featuring a fountain and fishing pier, and various paths for outdoor enthusiasts. Bellevue is one of the fastest-growing communities in the nation. Home to more than 60,000 residents and the 55th Wing and U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base, the city is bustling with residential and commercial growth, sparking the creation of several new shopping and dining destinations. Stella’s Bar & Grill is a down-to-earth staple in Bellevue, known for hand-pressed burgers served on paper napkins and fresh-cut fries. Since 1936, they have prided themselves on making the best burger you’ll ever eat. So much so, they’ve been named Omaha’s Best Burger seven years in a row. In 2014, they were also named the best burger in the state. The Bellevue culinary scene is thriving with local favorites satisfying every craving whether it be BBQ, Asian, Italian, Mexican, Soul Food or good old American.
“Great little museum packed with historical information and things to see. We loved it and will be back again!”
Not to be forgotten is Bellevue’s commitment to heritage and civic pride. Here, you can see Nebraska’s oldest church, the Old Presbyterian Church, and oldest public commercial building, the Old Fontenelle Bank, both built in 1856. The city also maintains a 1830s log cabin, the Southern Railroad Depot, and the Sarpy County Historical Museum, featuring hundreds of artifacts and dozens of historical displays.

retna is a charming and scenic community, declared home by many people for its proximity to Lincoln, Omaha, and several great attractions in between. The city originally sprang from an old Irish immigrant settlement called Forest City when the Burlington Railroad began laying down tracks in the area. Legend has it that Gretna was named by the railroad for the Gretna Green Community in Scotland.

It features renovated and expanded aquariums featuring Nebraska aquatic habitats, seventeen live animal tanks featuring Nebraska’s reptile and amphibian species, and a bird watching area. A virtual reality mountain biking experience gives visitors an opportunity to “ride” the trails on an actual bike. For a fun family festival, visit Gretna Days on Main Street. Another peaceful, and often moving, retreat is the Holy Family Shrine, situated on 23-acres overlooking I-80 and the Platte Valley. The Holy Family Shrine is glasswalled, with supports holding up its 45-feet-tall roof. A man-made stream bubbles along a path cut near the walkway to the entrance and then in the floor of the nave. The idea for the shrine was hatched in 1993, and a series of miracles led to the acquisition of property and building of the shrine, which opened in 2002. SARPY

“Clean park, well maintained fields, excellent playground that is closed in for the kids.” The city’s name, Spanish for “The View,” came about in the early 1960s because the first homes were built overlooking the floodplain of the Big Papillion Creek. That area is now the La Vista Sports Complex. One of the premier facilities in the Omaha area, it hosts the national Triple Crown SlumpBuster Baseball Tournament each year, welcoming thousands of people to La Vista and Sarpy County. This beautiful city-owned sports complex is home to four softball fields, a baseball field, 12 soccer fields, two football fields, and concession stands.

The new Central Park is an exciting piece of this new 84th Street Corridor and officially opened to the public in September of 2019. With the beautiful fountain as the centerpiece and the array of activities planned for the site, this public space will become an iconic park for all of the community. Bellevue: Where the good life keeps getting better It’s easy to feel right at home in Nebraska’s oldest settlement—and Sarpy County’s largest city. Originating as a fur-trading post in 1822, Bellevue earned its name from trappers who admired the city’s “beautiful view” of the wooded bluffs surrounding the majestic Missouri River.

Gretna: Where the welcome mat is always set out The city originally sprang from an old Irish immigrant settlement called Forest City when the Burlington Railroad began laying down tracks in the area. Legend has it that Gretna was named by the railroad for the Gretna Green Community in Scotland. But no one knows for sure.

Papillion / La Vista: Where progress is inevitable . . . and beautiful According to legend, fur trappers who came upon the area stumbled upon thousands of butterflies flying in the sunlight, causing one member of the exploring party to exclaim “Papillon!”—the French word for butterfly. La Vista is Nebraska’s youngest and fastest-growing city. La Vista also happens to be the second city in Sarpy County to be named for its setting, adopting the Spanish translation for “the view.”
