SARPY COUNTY VISITOR'S GUIDE 2019

BELLEVUE Haworth Park

t’s easy to feel right at home in Nebraska’s oldest settlement—and Sarpy County’s largest city. Originating as a fur-trading post in 1822, Bellevue earned its name from trappers who admired the city’s “beautiful view” of the wooded bluffs surrounding the majestic Missouri River. While certainly a lot has changed over the years, this remarkable view remains. One prime location is Haworth Park, where recreational trails wind along the riverfront into western Sarpy County and Omaha. The park is also home to the highly imaginative Lewis and Clark Children’s Interpretive Art Wall, which tells the story of the expedition through the eyes and artwork of children. Bellevue is one of the fastest-growing communities in the nation. Home to more than 60,000 residents and the 55th Wing and U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base, the city is bustling with residential and commercial growth, sparking the creation of several new shopping and dining destinations. Stella’s Bar & Grill is a down-to-earth staple in Bellevue, known for hand-pressed burgers served on paper napkins and fresh-cut fries. Since 1936, they have prided themselves on making the best burger you’ll ever eat. So much so, they’ve been named Omaha’s Best Burger seven years in a row. In 2014, they were also named the best burger in the state. Another family-friendly staple in the Bellevue area is B&B Grill and Arcade, where you can find hot dogs from around the country— like the Seattle Dog, the New Yorkie, or the B&B Chicago Dog, to name a few.

“Great little museum packed with historical information and things to see. We loved it and will be back again!”

Not to be forgotten is Bellevue’s commitment to heritage and civic pride. Here, you can see Nebraska’s oldest church, the Old Presbyterian Church, and oldest public commercial building, the Old Fontenelle Bank, both built in 1856. The city also maintains a 1830s log cabin, the Southern Railroad Depot, and the Sarpy County Historical Museum, featuring hundreds of artifacts and dozens of historical displays.

Locals and visitors alike enjoy visiting the Bellevue Berry Farm for a true country experience, where guests will see a variety of farm antiques, livestock, and crops, as well as unique play areas patterned after what life was like for kids 40 to 100 years ago. SARPY COUNTY VISITOR'S GUIDE 2019

GRETNA

Holy Family Shrine

retna is a charming and scenic community, declared home by many people for its proximity to Lincoln, Omaha, and several great attractions in between. The city originally sprang from an old Irish immigrant settlement called Forest City when the Burlington Railroad began laying down tracks in the area. Legend has it that Gretna was named by the railroad for the Gretna Green Community in Scotland.

Nebraska Crossing Outlets

The community is perhaps best known for the Nebraska Crossing Outlets along Interstate 80 and is the Midwest's No. 1 outlet shopping destination. The area features over 80 new-to-the-market retail brands like Michael Kors, Coach, PUMA, Polo Ralph Lauren, The North Face, kate spade, True Religion Brand Jeans, Vera Bradley, Under Armour, Nike, Brooks Brothers, Cole Haan, Steve Madden, and countless more.

In the fall, thousands of visitors descend upon Vala’s Pumpkin Patch and Apple Orchard, a family-owned-farmturned-mini-amusement-park dedicated to the Halloween holiday. Some attractions include the Lost Pumpkin Mine and Tumbling Rock Cavern, a pumpkin-eating dragon, the Pirate Maze, a train, and hayrack rides.

The park offers tremendous views of the surrounding countryside, wildlife, and seemingly endless horizon. The park also features several miles of hilly trails and limestone paths as well as the Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium and Outdoor Education Center.

For a fun family festival, visit Gretna Days on Main Street. The annual July event includes a car show, hog roast, tractor pull, dance, and parade. The Nebraska Balloon & Wine Festival at Leo Royal Park is a unique celebration. The festival brings together the experience of hot air balloon rides along with the best vineyards from Nebraska, showcasing some of their award-winning wines available to taste alongside delicious food, live entertainment, and a festive atmosphere. Another peaceful, and often moving, retreat is the Holy Family Shrine, situated on 23-acres overlooking I-80 and the Platte Valley. The Holy Family Shrine is glasswalled, with supports holding up its 45-feet-tall roof. A man-made stream bubbles along a path cut near the walkway to the entrance and then in the floor of the nave. The idea for the shrine was hatched in 1993, and a series of miracles led to the acquisition of property and building of the shrine, which opened in 2002. SARPY

“Clean park, well maintained fields, excellent playground that is closed in for the kids.”

La Vista Sports Complex

The first 335 homes built in La Vista in the early 1960s overlooked the floodplain of the Big Papillion Creek. The view from this vantage point is what eventually led to the city’s name, Spanish for “the view.” That area is now the La Vista Sports Complex. One of the premier facilities in the Omaha area, it hosts the national Triple Crown SlumpBuster Baseball Tournament each year, welcoming thousands of people to La Vista and Sarpy County. This beautiful city-owned sports complex is home to four softball fields, a baseball field, 12 soccer fields, two football fields, and concession stands.

While in La Vista, make sure to visit the Nebraska Brewing Company Brewery and Tap Room, an airy alehouse with an industrial feel where they brew their own beer and serve a menu of delicious American grub. You can also check out some of La Vista’s other amazing breweries like Kros Strain Brewing or Lucky Bucket Brewing Company as well as Cut Spike Distillery and Patriarch Distillers.

you might be drawn to the city’s miles of walking trails surrounded by lush landscaping and mature oak and maple trees. Twelve city parks offer prime real estate for picnicking and playing Frisbee. Back in the days before airconditioning, farmhouses would often have a separate building where they would cook meals, preserve gardenfresh produce, and bake goodies. Having a separate building meant the main house wouldn’t heat up while food was being prepared. This building was known as the summer kitchen. Today, we have air-conditioning and modern kitchens with all the conveniences. But, we still need a place to go once in a while where warm smiles, good food, and friendly conversation are guaranteed—we call it the Summer Kitchen Café. It's a family-friendly café where you can enjoy homemade desserts, soups, breakfast, lunch, and coffee. SARPY

ocated at the Cloisters on the Platte, the Stations of the Cross is a walking tour comprised of 14 sculpture stations that represent Christ’s trial through his burial. The Stations of the Cross walk is the same length that Jesus carried the cross from Jerusalem to Golgatha, about 2,500 feet. Each station tells a story about Jesus’ life that concludes with the beginning of Christianity, and includes an audio tour. Chalco Hills Recreation Area

Bellevue: Where the good life keeps getting better It’s easy to feel right at home in Nebraska’s oldest settlement—and Sarpy County’s largest city. Originating as a fur-trading post in 1822, Bellevue earned its name from trappers who admired the city’s “beautiful view” of the wooded bluffs surrounding the majestic Missouri River.

Gretna: Where the welcome mat is always set out The city originally sprang from an old Irish immigrant settlement called Forest City when the Burlington Railroad began laying down tracks in the area. Legend has it that Gretna was named by the railroad for the Gretna Green Community in Scotland. But no one knows for sure.

Papillion / La Vista: Where progress is inevitable . . . and beautiful According to legend, fur trappers who came upon the area stumbled upon thousands of butterflies flying in the sunlight, causing one member of the exploring party to exclaim “Papillon!”—the French word for butterfly. La Vista is Nebraska’s youngest and fastest-growing city. La Vista also happens to be the second city in Sarpy County to be named for its setting, adopting the Spanish translation for “the view.”
