SMASH PARK

Picture the year 2018. The Eagles finally won the Super Bowl and Monty and Kerri Lockyear were devising a plan to create something new. Something unique, something active, and above all, something social. After pairing their vision with a variety of activities, it became clear that nothing fit the bill like pickleball. It’s a sport that only takes a few minutes to get

familiar with, promotes an active lifestyle, and one where socializing is encouraged, even if it’s mostly trash talk. Then all their vision needed was outrageous events, extra entertainment, chef-crafted food, and uniquely curated cocktails. So, we added all of those next, and then bam, Smash Park was born. A place where you can create your own experience and get a new adventure every time you visit.

Any military-related tour must begin with Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue. The base is headquarters for the 55th Wing, 95th Wing and U.S. Strategic Command. The facility began as Fort Crook between 1894 and 1896. The fort’s namesake was Maj. Gen. George Crook, a renowned Indian fighter and Civil War hero. In spring 1921, 260 acres was leveled and seeded to create an airfield suitable for frequent takeoffs and landings by heavier-than-air aircraft. In 1992, Offutt became the host for the United States Strategic Command’s headquarters.

A group tour of Offutt requires some paperwork be completed ahead of time so work with the Sarpy County Tourism Team early by calling 1-800-467-2779.

The newest tribute to state’s Vietnam Veterans is located in Papillion. The Nebraska Vietnam Veterans Memorial is dedicated to those who served during that era and a reminder of the sacrifices made. There are 37,000 Vietnam era veterans who live in Nebraska. Several obelisks highlighting significant events of that war and a sculpture with soldiers in a renovated UH-1 Huey helicopter attempting an extraction tell the story of soldiers who fought for America at that time.

Veterans Park

The next military-related stops are in Papillion as well. First, Veterans Park honors the service and sacrifice of our nation’s military veterans, especially those in Sarpy County. The park is an official Gold Star and Blue Star Memorial. Its Honor Walls display the names of Sarpy County veterans of all eras and the sculptures honor service members KIA, MIA and POW.

The Omaha National Cemetery is found on the city’s western edge. The 236-acre cemetery in Sarpy County will serve the burial needs of more than 112,000 veterans in the service area for the next 100 years. The cemetery is the second Department of Veterans Affairs national cemetery in the state beyond the Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.
