Volume 22, No. 1
In a pilot program, the Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation is partnering with the Omaha Salvation Army to promote water safety. This year the foundation sponsored two Omaha Kroc Center swimming instructors to attend an early childhood swimming class and to become certified in a course that teaches young children, ages 1-3, how to roll on their backs (like an otter!) so they can breathe, float and reach the side of the pool until help arrives. Those precious seconds can save a life! This early childhood training is called “Float4Life”. As stated by Candace Kellogg, Kroc Center Aquatics Coordinator and certified Float4Life instructor, “At the end of the Float4Life training, it was incredible to see toddlers, who didn’t know how to swim, jump into the deep end of the pool, throw their heads back, their tummies up and twist into the life-saving position of being on their back . . . and not be afraid.”
Realtor® Ring Day Disaster Preparedness Kroc Center Healthy Home Project
Additionally, volunteers from the foundation have started a reading program about water safety that they have presented to Salvation Army area Corps. In February 2012, “Josh the Otter” and the volunteers visited the Omaha Kroc Center, North Corps, and the Citadel Corps. “Josh the Otter” and the book, Josh The Baby Otter, were well received by the children and parents in the after-school programs at each corps. During 2012-2013, we will implement the “Float4Life” swimming classes at the Kroc Center. Each session includes 8 lessons, each 15 minutes long. These "mini" lessons maximize the short attention span of toddlers while gradually increasing the child's comfort level in the water. Cost is $35 for Kroc Center members and $45 for non-members.

"Doing the Most Good®" by Working Together
Now is the Time to Learn Lifesaving Skills
This issue of the Salute is focusing on the power of collaboration. I am constantly amazed and thankful for the many friends like you who share with The Salvation Army your time, talent and treasure. Your gifts enable us to better serve the people who turn to The Salvation Army every day requesting help with physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. The Salvation Army is also blessed to have dedicated officers and employees and strong working relationships with other service providers. The difference we make in the lives of people because of this powerful joining of resources is humbling. We know we could never do it alone – nor would we ever want to try. The image of the body St. Paul used in 1 Corinthians 12 applies to our service and to those we serve. We need each other. When one of us hurts, we all hurt. When someone is honored, we all can rejoice!
Summer is a fun-filled season for kids and the time of year they are most likely to enjoy activities in and around the water. Sadly, not everyone has experience in the water, and the momentary temptation can result in a life-threatening situation. Statistics show that nine people drown each day. In ethnically diverse areas like south Omaha, the youth drowning rate is more than double the national average. The best thing to stay safe in and around the water is to learn to swim.
Thank you for what you do to serve your community. Together we are “Doing the Most Good®”. May God bless you richly.
Servpro Drive Helps Keep Local Kids Safe The sunny days of summer are right around the corner and for many that means summer fun in a pool. However, not everyone is able to enjoy this beloved summer pastime because they can't afford the proper attire. Imagine the embarrassment of being turned away from a pool because you are not wearing the appropriate attire, a lined bathing suit. The simple gift of a gently used swimsuit can make a big difference in a child’s life and the confidence they have around water which is why Servpro of Southwest Omaha and Fremont/ Northwest Omaha are conducting a drive to collect swimsuits and towels for less fortunate children and adults so they can swim at The Salvation Army Kroc Center or participate in swim lessons. Throughout the entire month of May, fourteen businesses around Omaha, including both Servpro offices and the Kroc Center, will collect new or “slightly experienced” swimsuits for boys, girls and adults as well as towels.
Donations of swim trunks for males and one-piece suits for for females in all sizes are requested.

Through the Kroc K-Club, corporations or individuals can help fund swim lesson scholarships aimed at saving lives of Omaha’s youth. A donation of $1,000 (1K) would provide scholarship funding for twenty-eight children. For more information on how you can participate in the Kroc K-Club, call The Salvation Army Kroc Center at 402-905-3500.
Kroc Campaign Closes
Major Paul D. Smith Divisional Commander
“Every month we have to turn away dozens of children and adults who come to swim in our Aquatics Center,” Major Todd Thielke, Senior Kroc Center Officer, said, “It is heartbreaking to see the disappointment on their faces, but proper attire is needed to use our recreation pool and lap pool.”
At the Kroc Center, learning and fun go hand in hand. Swim lessons are designed to develop progressive swimming skills with a strong emphasis on safety in a friendly and fun environment. Lori Scott appreciates that. “My grandson has really blossomed under the instruction of the Kroc Center swim instructors. I am extremely pleased and feel that the money spent was well worth it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!”
As we approach the new life of the spring season, I am reminded of the new life that The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center brings to the old commercial stockyards area. After a long winter of working industry comes a fresh new community of recreational play. Thousands of people are discovering new ways to grow with their families and learn new life skills. A neighborhood surrounded by closed walls and fear is now open to grow as a healthy community in a safe and secure place. The greater Metro Omaha community is to be commended for its generous support and willingness to embrace Joan Kroc’s vision. It was with great foresight that the community came together to prepare the soil where the planting of the idea of an Omaha Kroc Center could take root and later bloom. On behalf of thousands of families whose lives have been elevated by the opportunities provided by the state of the art facility and professional staff at the Kroc Center, I want to personally thank the donor community for stepping up and raising the funds to generate the matching grant to win the Kroc Center for Omaha. The leadership of Heritage Services blazed the way and provided inspiration for others to see that a Kroc Center was achievable, and the community joined in, thus making the Kroc Center a reality. The Salvation Army wants to thank Heritage Services for their fundraising and construction management expertise that was used to oversee the Kroc Center initiative. Now the season comes to a conclusion. The final pledges for the community matching grant have been received, and we want to thank all of our many community partners for the successful completion of this campaign! Sincerely His Witness,
Servpro of Southwest Omaha and of Fremont/Northwest Omaha delivered 158 swimsuits and 38 towels to the Kroc Center last year as a result of their 2011 Swimsuit Drive to help families who cannot afford the luxury of such summer necessities.

ARE YOU PREPARED FOR 72 HOURS AFTER A DISASTER? When preparing for possible emergency situations, it is best to think about the basics of survival: fresh water, food, flashlight and extra batteries, first aid kit, clean air (dust masks) and warmth. You should have at least 72 hours worth of these supplies at home, the place you work and at a relative’s home. You never know where you will be when an emergency happens. WATER: one gallon of water per person per day for three days (including water for your pets) FOOD: enough to last three days (nonperishable food, including food for your pets) HAND HELD CAN OPENER: if kit contains canned food RADIO: battery-powered or hand crank, with extra batteries FLASHLIGHT: with extra batteries FIRST AID KIT: including prescription medicine DUST MASK: to filter contaminated air GARBAGE BAGS: for personal sanitation – include moist towelettes BLANKETS/PILLOWS: to keep warm and to shield from falling debris. For additional items to consider adding to your Emergency Supply Kit and more information on being prepared including having a “Family Emergency Plan” go to: www.READY.GOV The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services is often first on the scene and the last to leave.
EMERGENCY DISASTER SERVICES TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
The Western Division Emergency Disaster Services Department is setting up training opportunities throughout the division. Some of these sessions have already been held. These courses will start in the spring at various locations within the division. In cooperation with our neighboring divisions, we will be offering courses conducted by other Divisional and Territorial trainers, which will provide additional training opportunities.
Kids Cruisin’ Kitchen: Meeting the Need for a Healthy Summer This summer, the Omaha Salvation Army will again join forces with Hunger Free Heartland and Food Bank for the Heartland on our shared initiative to combat childhood hunger in the Omaha Metro area. The Kids Cruisin’ Kitchen will begin its second year of service on June 4th, 2012. This unique collaborative project was piloted last summer to address a local issue of underutilization of the National Summer Food Service Program, a federal subsidy that supports the provision of free meals to youth during the critical summer months. In the past, the reach of this program has been limited to sites where schools, churches and community organizations already host summer youth programs. By preparing fresh meals daily at The Salvation Army’s Omaha Citadel Corps and using two Disaster Relief canteens to serve them to youth at safe, appealing locations where children already congregate such as parks and recreational areas, we served an astonishing 8,348 meals in 2011.
Families share a meal together courtesy of the Kids Cruisin’ Kitchen.
Kids Cruisin’ Kitchen builds upon the expertise of The Salvation Army’s highly successful Winter Night Watch program, and included the generous contribution of over 2,000 hours by 100 dedicated volunteers. The pilot program was also funded by a Feeding America ConAgra Foods Hunger Free Summer grant. We are excited to announce that in 2012 the Kids Cruisin’ Kitchen will serve lunch every Monday through Friday through August 3rd (with the exception of July 4th) at four outdoor sites across the greater Omaha Metro area. We will serve approximately 250 hot lunches a day, anticipating the provision of over 10,000 meals by summer’s end.
Filling the summer nutrition gap is a top priority of The Salvation Army and their partner agencies as hunger increases children’s risk for illness and other health problems and is one of the most severe obstacles to the learning process. Kids Cruisin’ Kitchen and other summer meal programs further The Salvation Army’s mission to fill a most basic need for a nutritious meal. For more information on the Summer Food Service Program and nutritional resources for children, go to www.hungerfreeheartland.org.
Volunteer Opportunites Kids Cruisin’ Kitchen - volunteer to serve lunches this summer. Back-to-School Backpack Program - volunteers needed to sort school supplies and fill backpacks in early August. Stepping Stones Day Care and Summer Camps - volunteers needed to assist teachers on field trips during June, July and August. Winter Night Watch Re-Cap The Winter Night Watch Program for 2011-12 exceeded last year by almost 200 meals served. A total of 18,340 meals were served by 261 volunteers putting in 1,573 volunteer hours. Our many drivers and jump seat volunteers drove many shifts, standing in the sometimes very cold and windy weather and did a wonderful service providing the meals and winter gear to so many folks in need. Many friendships were formed. Two canteens were utilized. One served Monday through Friday along Leavenworth Street, and the other canteen served Monday, Wednesday and Friday in south Omaha. The folks receiving the much needed hot meals and winter wear were very grateful for the donated items they received. Even though the weather was not as cold as in past years, the need was still there, and we hope we made their winter a little warmer.
FUNdamentals with the Omaha Storm Chasers The Salvation Army is collaborating with The Omaha Storm Chasers on several fronts. Last year, The Salvation Army hosted a community service night at Werner Stadium which is home to the Triple-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. Last July, The Army was invited back to participate in Christmas in July at Werner Park. Our red kettles and bell ringers met guests at the gates and back to school donations were accepted. When the Storm Chasers won the Pacific Coast League Championship, they donated their cash award to The Salvation Army North Corps Community Center to be used for the new computer lab. Storm Chaser employees even rang bells over the past Christmas season. In 2012, we continue to benefit from our relationship. The Salvation Army community night will be held on May 24th and the Storm Chasers are also continuing to help North Corps children this summer teaching them baseball skills through their FUNdamentals Program. The children will receive tickets to a Storm Chasers game after the sixweek program and celebrate the end of a great summer of baseball!
Western Division Realtors Hold First-Ever ‘Realtor® Ring Day’ Realtors from across The Salvation Army Western Division rang bells at the division’s first-ever “Realtor® Ring Day” event this past December. Nebraska is one of eight new states to join the Realtor® Ring Day movement which debuted in Minnesota and North Dakota last Christmas and helped raise about $200,000. The idea to hold Realtor® Ring Day came from a realtor in Fargo, ND who wanted to give real estate professionals an opportunity to support a cause that is dear to them: housing. Realtors rang at nearly 200 kettle sites in 30 cities across Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota including Boone, Des Moines, Mason City, Sioux City, Ottumwa, Lincoln, Omaha, Alliance, York, Kearney, Columbus, Lexington, Fremont, Grand Island, Hastings, North Platte, Norfolk, Scottsbluff, Beatrice, Aberdeen, Huron, Rapid City, Sioux Falls and Watertown. Donations on December 9th totaled nearly $126,000.00! Omaha Area Board of Realtors® affiliate member Aida Allen said, “We had a blast! My son, Grayson, and I are going to make this an annual event because it was so rewarding for both of us!” “The Salvation Army is a leading housing nonprofit that provides emergency, temporary and permanent shelter to tens of thousands of people across the country,” said Greg Kadrlik, divisional director of volunteers. “We cannot thank the realtors enough for raising money to support our housing programs. Because of their efforts, The Salvation Army can shelter more people in need.”

“I Have My Life Back” The Salvation Army Veterans Administration Per Diem Program began in 2008. This program provides supportive housing for ten homeless veterans who experience behavioral health difficulties. While in the program, participants are provided holistic weekly case management services which address financial, residential, and emotional wellness and stability. The Salvation Army provides a safe environment to assist in the re-integration from the world of military deployment into our community. This is achieved by providing a supportive environment and connecting with support services in the community. A veteran in the program said, “When I began using these services, I couldn’t leave my room. I was so unsure of what to do. I was waiting for something bad to happen. During that time, I was unsure if I was going to make it. After almost two years, I am now able to volunteer five days a week, and soon I will be moving into my own place.” Another veteran said, “After I returned from deployment, I was scared to get in a car or ride a bus. While I was in the program, staff helped me understand that my fears about riding in a car or bus were not rational, and after many short rides in a car with my case manager, I began to feel Program participant, Gene, visits with his Salvation Army caseworker Leah, somewhat comfortable again. Now after a year I am able to ride the bus who provides him with the support he needs to start life anew. without any concern. I am now able to get where I need to go. I have my life back.” While in the program, veterans are provided with support to assist them in developing a new way of life. This is accomplished through individual support as well as through other collaborative community partnerships such as the Veterans Administration, Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Douglas County Assistance and federal assistance such as Social Security.
Gifts of Grain Did you know that you can donate grain to The Salvation Army? It’s true. Farmers and ranchers can significantly lower their tax liability by donating agricultural commodities to The Salvation Army instead of selling first and donating cash later. By transferring legal ownership of a commodity to The Salvation Army before it is sold, the producer avoids the income tax that otherwise would have been due after the sale. Additionally, the producer can deduct the cost of producing the commodity. Besides reducing federal and state income tax, self-employment taxes also may be diminished depending on the producer’s own situation. It is important to remember that written documentation of the title transfer must be provided to The Salvation Army as well as the grain elevator or sale barn. Additionally, The Salvation Army must control and direct the sale of the commodity. As always, donors are strongly encouraged to consult their tax advisors to determine whether a gift of commodities is right for them. For assistance to complete a gift of commodities, please contact our Planned Giving Department at (800) 274-0628 or visit our website at www.SalArmyGiving.org.

Camping Collaborations! There are few programs that have lasting impact on the youth who represent our future leaders than Salvation Army Summer Camp programs. These are great opportunities for collaborations with local businesses, organizations, and associations that make a difference. There are two basic models of summer camp operations: day camp that kids attend during the day and return to their homes at the end of the camp day, and "resident" camps where campers attend for a period of days or weeks. Whether it's a summer day camp or "resident" camp, both present wonderful opportunities for collaborative partnerships. At Omaha North Corps Community Center, part of its day camp has been set aside for a special collaboration with the National Park Service and the University of Nebraska at Omaha. In this “carve out” from normal day camp activities, kids are introduced to their environment in a unique manner that blends an understanding of the history North Corps Youth Program Director, Jim Sells, of their neighborhood, environmental education and a brings new energy and purpose to the Corps' mission. conservation component to give campers the opportunity to gain a sense of cultural and historical place. UNO is working to provide volunteer students from the university to serve as staff members while the National Park Service provides all the professional education and expertise needed to achieve program goals. The North Corps provides the young people! This initiative has already raised the interest in other regions within the National Park Service from as far away as Florida.
Young Volunteers Make Hope Kits Millard Public School’s Bess Aldrich Elementary students wanted to make a difference in the community. Teacher Susan Schall said, “One of our purposes is to help our children inquire, think globally, and take action locally.” After hearing Salvation Army metro area volunteer director Kay Weinstein speak, the Aldrich 5th graders began thinking about some of the many needs in the Omaha community and wanted to help. Students began looking in their own homes for miniature-size toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner along with toothbrushes, washcloths, soap, band-aids, and other items they felt a person could use on a daily basis. Ms. Schall said, “My students were amazed at the number of items they could give which came right from their own homes.” Students began asking aunts, uncles, and grandparents for their extra items as well. As the items came in to the school, students formed assembly lines to distribute the needed items into bags which would be given to people in need. To date, these amazing 5th graders have made over three hundred emergency kits giving hope to those in need.

Bell Ringing Praises Many service extension units in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota were pleasantly surprised by the amount of holiday cheer brought to their communities this past bell ringing season. Contributions were up over 13% in Nebraska, 32% in Iowa and 18.5% in South Dakota. Maybe we can thank the Lord for providing us with warmer temperatures thus allowing our dedicated volunteers to put in more hours ringing the bells. Ultimately, however, we want to thank our donors for their continued support in service extension communities. Ninety percent of all donations received stay in the county where they are raised to provide assistance with rent, utilities, groceries, lodging, medicine, disaster and many other needs. Because of the amazing increase in support, our units will be able to reach out to even more families and individuals in need of a little extra temporary emergency assistance. Thank you for your sincere caring and continuing support!

Dynamic Collaborations College of Saint Mary’s Fast Track to Teaching Master’s Program The Omaha Salvation Army was pleased to welcome skilled tutors as volunteers in the Army’s after-school programs at the Citadel Corps and North Corps. This is an exciting and flexible experience for the graduate students from the College of Saint Mary to exercise their tutoring skills, organize learning opportunities and work one-on-one with the after-school program students. Currently we have six graduate students participating in the after-school programs. Four are assigned to the Citadel, one is at North Corps, and one divides her time between the Citadel and North Corps. Each graduate student conducted an evaluation to determine the learning skill level of each child. An individual tutoring program is designed to help each child with his/her school work. Reading materials are offered to guide the children not only in reading skills but in basic life skills. The College of Saint Mary graduate students have offered creative ideas to enhance the Army’s after-school programs. It is typical to see the tutors fully engaged with the children working on homework, playing basketball, and developing their reading skills.

The tutors report that this volunteer experience is rewarding for them. They are practicing their teaching and child development skills. Most importantly, the children enthusiastically look forward to the tutors who bring their energy, creativity, and love of learning to our Omaha Citadel and North Corps children. Spirit of Nebraska Girl Scouts A Girl Scout/Salvation Army “Fight Hunger Campaign” for the Hastings, Grand Island, Kearney, and North Platte Corps kicked-off on April 21. It was modeled on the Omaha metro-eastern Nebraska “Fight Hunger Campaign” which for the past several years, has successfully helped fill our local Omaha Salvation Army food pantries. Eight hundred and seventy-three Girl Scouts from eastern Nebraska participated in collecting more than 13,000 nonperishable food items during the 2011 fall campaign. The spring campaign continued the success of helping to fill pantry needs. The collaborative efforts between the Spirit of Nebraska Girl Scouts and The Salvation Army are beneficial to the local community, The Salvation Army, and the girls themselves. The pantries are filled and the girls develop leadership skills while helping the Army with its mission of "Doing the Most Good®". Of all the problems our communities face, hunger is one that can be faced head on, and this collaboration is helping to fight it.
“Just Can It!” Student Food Drive Celebrated 9th Anniversary For the ninth year, The Salvation Army partnered with University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) students to raise awareness about homelessness in Omaha. Members of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity participated in the ninth annual “Just Can It!” event that was held April 16 through April 20. The students slept outside in cardboard boxes at the Crossroads Mall to raise awareness about homelessness. UNO students and community partners were encouraged to collect monetary and food donations throughout the week for The Salvation Army’s food pantries. This year, the students' goal was to collect 50,000 cans of food. Event sponsors and collection partners included HyVee (90th & W. Center Rd.), Journal Broadcast Group (Channel 94.1 FM), Mayflower Moving, the Omaha Fire Department, Omaha Mayor’s office, Tenaska Business Park, Smith & Esch Fitness Systems, Crossroads Mall and UNO. UNO Fraternity raises awareness about homelessness.
Spring Cleaning! Say the word “spring” and to many people it is synonymous with deep cleaning and organizing. Sweeping away the dust and grime left from winter is a tradition many of us anticipate. That seasonal urge to purge and polish doesn’t have to end after we put away the mop and pail. Now may be the perfect time to review and “spring clean” your estate plan. Our wills guide is an easy-to-use, fill-in-the-blank booklet that can help you organize all of the information an estate planning attorney will need to create your will or trust plan. Donor Legacy Lives On Through North Platte Corps Emerald and Lillian Dringman, a Christian couple who loved the Lord, also cared deeply about children. Many years ago, Lillian befriended a young girl in her community who greatly benefited from a Salvation Army program in North Platte, NE. Feeling that the girl had become a changed person, Lillian chose to make The Salvation Army one of her preferred charities. That was more than 20 years ago. Even now, long after Lillian’s passing, her spirit of giving still lives on through programs and services being provided today at The Salvation Army’s North Platte Corps. Last fall, The Salvation Army was presented with a $75,000 gift which was the final distribution of Lillian’s trust. Her gift will be used to support programs and services including summer day camp activities, food pantry services, after-school programs and holiday distributions to families of food baskets and toys. Lillian’s initial desire in supporting The Salvation Army was to provide a safe, homelike environment where families could spend time together talking, laughing, and getting to know one another better. It was Lillian’s prayer that her gift would help build strong families. Emerald & Lillian Dringman created a legacy, benefitting many families today and into the future.
“We are so blessed with this gift," said Captain Jason Poff. One of the goals of The Salvation Army is to minister to hurting families. At the Dringman Center for Families, we’re able to provide resources to reach families in one convenient location where services can be accessed so families can mend. With Lillian’s gift, we can continue to help families for many years to come.”

“Party in a Box” A group of 6th graders at St. Pius X/St. Leo School in Omaha wanted to make birthdays special. Students in the group - “Destination Imagination” - decided to create a project that would ensure children whose families were facing financial burdens and other struggles that they would not be forgotten on their birthdays. They presented an advertisement about “Party in a Box” to their 3rd grade partners and to their fellow 6th graders. They were all invited to donate supplies to go in the boxes. Some of the items included: small gifts, food, books, socks, crayons, bracelets and more. These student volunteers then prepared the boxes and brought them to The Salvation Army Citadel Corps. The birthday boxes will be given to Sudanese children in the after-school program.

Healthy Home Project – Helping Families Be Better Together! Today’s families are busier than ever and, more often than not, healthy choices are put on the backburner. Meal time consists of high calorie “on-the-go” meals like pizza and burgers while leisure time is increasingly filled with sedentary behaviors such as TV viewing, video games, and the internet that provide little time for family bonding. The Salvation Army Kroc Center’s Healthy Home Project is designed to help busy families address these important health issues with real-life solutions. This free program, developed by the Kroc Center’s Health & Fitness Manager, Sandy Andersen, is made possible through funding from The General Mills Foundation and by the generous support from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center. Working collectively with these partners, the Kroc Center is able to make a positive impact in the community and inspire healthy lifestyles. Healthy Home participants meet weekly for a mix of family-friendly educational activities, goal setting, and exercise that help them fit quality family time into their routines, and, ultimately, lead to healthier and more active lives. “It was great to learn and do exercises that my family can all do together!” stated one happy participant. Flexibility, strength, endurance and BMI scores are measured at both the beginning and end of the 12-week program. The positive results of the program were evident when the first 10 families to participate showed overall improvements in all of these key health categories. Having begun in the fall of 2011, the Project is on track with its goal of helping up to 60 families in its first year. To date, 10 families have completed the program and 15 more are currently enrolled. Weekly incentives like pedometers, water bottles and gift cards provide an extra dose of motivation for families to reach their goals which are broken down into physical and nutritional achievements. A big thanks goes out to community partners like HyVee and United Healthcare Share Advantage who provide several incentives for the Healthy Home Project. Another successful component of the program is meal planning and nutrition. Families on the go tend to eat on the go. The Kroc Center’s registered dietician (who is also a part of HyVee’s nutrition team) helps families beat the battle of the bulge by focusing on portion control, meal planning and nutrition. During the program, favorite family recipes are revised to improve nutrition without sacrificing taste. “Thank you very much for teaching me how to cook healthier!” said Tammy Mancilla. “My family is going to appreciate it, too. I cannot believe all that I have learned in the past two classes. Now I know how to do it right! I am very grateful to learn the right way to cook while preparing all of our favorite foods.”
