Workers install one of three modules that will make up Mid-Valley Hospital’s new permanent MRI department, set to open in November.

Mid Valley’s new magnet Permanent MRI machine first in Okanogan County Mid Valley Hospital’s newest addition this year is their new state-of-the-art MRI wing.

The facility was built totally off-site, delivered on semi-trailers and dropped down on prepared foundations on Sept. 8. The MRI machine, which was delivered on Sept. 19, will be the first of its kind in Okanogan County. The only other in the area is located in Wenatchee.

The new addition sits behind the emergency room wing at the southwest corner of the hospital. The building was made up of three modules, with the one that houses the

The site of the new MRI wing was cleared off in March 2016. At about the same time, construction of the modules was taking place hundreds of miles away from Omak.

The move required extra time, but strings were apparently pulled by contractors as the module showed up on time to only require that the crane be onsite for one day, Administrator Mike Billing said. A $15,000 upgrade was added to put a window on the south end of the building to allow patients to see outside. Studies have shown that it helps all patients, but also helps those with issues of claustrophobia, according to Billing. The modular building will be paid for by Toshiba, which also is supplying the new MRI machine. Mid-Valley will then lease

the facility for 84 months on a rent-to-own type plan, Billing said. “We hope to get 10 years out of it,” Billing said, adding that purchasing the unit is actually cheaper than the lease they were paying on the traveling unit. “Instead of renting the house for 20 years, we’re going to own it,” Radiology manager Chrystal Atwood said. Atwood said the main concern behind the project was the patients. “It’s all about patient comfort and safety,” Atwood said. “”If you’re going to lay there for an hour, I want you comfortable.” But Atwood said that patients who have had an MRI scan before will likely notice a big difference with much less sound, more information for doctor’s reviewing the scans and scan times will likely be quicker. The facility will replace an Alliance Imaging mobile unit that visits the hospital four days a week.

The new machine will be much quieter and will accept larger-bodied people than the old one due to a larger bore size. Licensed MRI technicians, who are hospital employees already working in the traveling MRI unit, will operate the new machinery so patients won’t notice a difference with the staff. Radiologist Dr. Love will be on site and nearly all scans will be reviewed on-site, according to Atwood. The new department will intially be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but could expand to Saturdays with up to 10 hours each day, depending on volume. The hospital looked at several MRI machines before selecting Toshiba to provide the service. One big positive for Toshiba is that they have a service representative based in Wenatchee, Billing said.

2016 Health and Medical Directory — Page 3

After being placed on a reinforced foundation, the facility is nearly complete, only missing touchups and the final piece the MRI equipment. This view of the MRI room shows where the magnet will be placed. When it is installed, workers will remove the roof, lower the device into the room with a crane and then have the room sealed from any leakage, which could throw off good MRI scans.

Orthopedic services still available at MV Medical Clinic expects smooth transition The clinic in south Omak will have one major change in the near future. Mid-Valley Medical Group will no longer use Caribou Trail Orthopedic Services for their orthopedics. Clinic administrator Becky Corson said the switch to inhouse services will take place on November 1, but patients shouldn’t notice any change of service.

What will happen with Caribou Trail, a limitedliability corporation which Hospital was Mid-Valley majority owner, is still not decided, Corson said. “Orthopedic services will be available in the valley,” Corson said. “There will not be a break in services.” Corson said all clinic visits may be moved to the Omak location. They had offered services in Tonasket and Brewster in the past, but patients may be asked to come to the central location.

5 rules to live by this year StatePoint At school, kids are exposed to an influx of germs that can cause a number of preventable sicknesses, including cold and flu. The top germiest school-based culprits include water fountains, plastic reusable cafeteria trays, keyboards, toilets and… students’ hands. To keep your family free from the sniffles all year long, here are five easy-to-follow tips to ensure a healthy, happy and absent-free school year.

1. Teach kids to wash hands the right way.

It seems simple enough, but research shows that only 5 percent of people wash their hands properly. The CDC recommends following five simple steps: wet, lather, scrub (for at least 20 seconds), rinse and dry. Don’t forget backs of hands, between fingers and under the nails. Handwashing is the best defense against germs, but if soap and water aren’t available, hand sanitizer is a good alternative.

2. Sanitize school supplies.

Sanitize school supplies, lunch boxes,

bottoms of backpacks, etc., weekly. These items are exposed to a variety of germs lurking in places like gym lockers, on desks and in bathrooms. Use disinfecting wipes on plastic objects, and throw items like lunch boxes and backpacks in the washing machine. Send kids to school with disposable wipes so they can clean surfaces like desks, cafeteria trays and other surfaces throughout the day.

3. Set a sleep schedule.

A regular bedtime and an alert morning go hand-in-hand. The National Sleep Foundation recommends a calming nighttime routine like reading a book or taking a bath to signal the brain that it’s bedtime, and leave technology like tablets, laptops and cell phones out of the bedroom. If you’re wondering how much sleep your child needs each night, it’s recommended that toddlers receive 11 to 14 hours, preschoolers 10 to 13 hours, school-aged children nine to 11 hours, and teenagers eight to 10 hours.

4. Keep healthy snacks and meals on hand.

A healthy, balanced diet has been proven to keep kids mentally sharp and focused, but

fast-paced schedules during the school year can sometimes result in quick-fix, and often unhealthy, food choices. Keep nutritious grab-and-go snacks like trail mix and fruit at the ready. And don’t skip breakfast. It can mean decreased cognitive performance in areas like alertness, attention, memory and problem solving.

5. Nurse kids back to health.

Germs are lurking everywhere -- school, preschool and daycare, so be prepared if sickness does strike. New e-tools come in handy for unexpected fevers, giving parents peace of mind and children the rest they need to get better. Wearable, Bluetooth temperature monitors, available at some stores, continuously sense, record and transmit body temperature for up to 24hours. It can even send alerts to your smartphone via its free mobile app to notify you immediately if your child’s fever reaches an unsafe level. From hectic schedules to germ-ridden classrooms, the stress and environment of school can take a toll on kids’ health. Keep them healthier with a few simple strategies and you’ll be headed to a perfect attendance record.

Deal with back-to-school germs StatePoint Back-to-school is an exciting time of year for families, but it also means new exposures to germs. From school desks found to have 400 times more bacteria than the average toilet, to personal items like backpacks and cellphones, germs are everywhere. Taking steps to reduce exposure can make for a healthier school year ahead. Remember to wash hands and your items frequently -- did you know that backpacks have 10,000 germs per square inch? Then, use shelf liner in areas of your home where school items are stored for extra protection. Try using shelf liners with antimicrobial protection, which protects the liner from the growth of mold and mildew. Plus, the liners can be tossed in the wash for easy cleaning. Parents can help keep classrooms cleaner by providing teachers with disinfecting wipes and shelf liner to protect desks, drawers and shelves.
