LifeLine updates ambulance service New vehicles, equipment being added to fleet The Chronicle OMAK – LifeLine Ambulance is adding new equipment and

working to replace their fleet of emergency vehicles to better serve patients. Recently, LifeLine replaced cardiac monitors in all of their ambulances to a 12-lead EKG model, which works much like the systems in place at local hospitals, according to general

manager Wayne Walker. “So we can take a look at your heart with 12 different leads,” Walker said. The machines provide real time CPR feedback and can alert paramedics when the chest compressions are done if they are giving the best compressions

possible. Walker is hopeful the company is able to work with all area hospitals in the next 6-12 months to be able to transmit data from the monitors from field to hospital. The technology is available, LifeLine just needs

Family Health expands, adding staff Three physicians, two dentists added to staff roster The Chronicle OMAK — Family Health Centers is expanding and with help from federal grants, serving those underserved in the area. Family Health Center named Heather Findlay interim CEO in July. She started at Family Health Center in 1999 as a patient account supervisor. She worked as the chief operations officer since 2004. Two new dentists and three physicians have been added, but the company is still actively recruiting for medical professionals. The group operates 10 medical and dental sites in Omak, Okanogan, Tonasket, Brewster, Bridgeport, Oroville and Twisp. “Last year we provided care to over 14,000 patients, or over one third of the people in Okanogan County,” Findlay said. With last year’s opening of their flagship clinic in Omak, Family Health Center is mostly adding medical staff, according to Findlay. “That’s our state of the art place. We’ve mainly just added staff,” Findlay said. Findlay said the most recent change was the addition of a medical/dental clinic in Twisp. The group recently received an additional $280,000 in federal grants. They receive about $4 million per year in federal grants, according to Interim CEO Heather

Family Health Center’s state-of-the-art medical facility in north Omak. Findlay. “Grants make up about 23% of our total budget,” Findlay said. “These funds allow us to provide a low cost, sliding fee program based on income and family size for those who are uninsured or underinsured.” As a result, Findlay says that they are required to comply with strict federal regulations. “Family Health Centers collaborates closely with all three hospitals in Okanogan County,” Findlay said. “We all work together to ensure that we have a strong healthcare network providing care to everyone in Okanogan County.”

hospital, such as Wenatchee. The company also added powerlift stretchers in all ambulances. The battery and hydraulic systems raise and lower the stretcher without effort on part of the paramedics. “Our crews no longer have to manually lift our stretchers. That has made it much safer for our crews as well as for the patient,” Walker said.

Three Rivers adds Coast to Coast Hoping for levy passages to make improvements to emergency room

“ We’re working on establishing a core group of physicians. Terri Orford

The Chronicle BREWSTER — In an effort to better serve its patients with qualified professionals, Three Rivers Hospital has partnered with Coast to Coast to provide ER doctors. Established in 2005, Coast to Coast Healthcare Services, based in Ohio, provides provides staffing to underserved rural hospitals. “They are used to seeing a much higher number of patients,” Three Rivers Hospital spokesperson Terri Orford said. “This is sort of a vacation for them. They don’t have to see the number of patients.”

” The company claims that their doctors enjoy the rural setting as it gives them a break from the nonstop work in a large urban setting and the chance to see new places. “Overall we can offer great value for Hospitals while improving quality of life for our doctors,” the company website reads. “ The real winners in this equation are patients who receive consistently high quality care from excellent providers.” Coast to Coast providers are

board certified in Emergency Medicine and most have worked at larger hospitals, according to Orford. “We’re working on establishing a core group of physicians,” Orford said. Doctors fly in for between 24 hours and a week and provide staff to fill in coverage gaps. “The staff has really embraced Coast to Coast,” Orford said. “I think that they have already benefited from the expertise of

the doctors.” On-site physicians hold them accountable with chart reviews to ensure quality care for patients, according to Orford. Along with the staffing change, the hospital has upgraded to a new 32-slice CT scanner. Orford said the district is hoping to make more improvements if two levies on the ballot for this fall are approved by voters. “The facility is aging and we have quite a few needs,” Orford said. Updates would include relocating the emergency room to the current site of family care, which used to be the intensive care unit. “Patient exam rooms are spread out and are small. They could potentially pose patient care safety issues,” Orford said. “Very little would have to be done to bring it up to code. We are hoping the voters can support that.”

Omak Clinic focused on team plan Patients can expect shorter wait times to be seen by medical team, physicians The Chronicle OMAK - Confluence Health has added two new doctors and a physician’s assistant to the staff of the Omak Clinic. The staffing change plays into the clinic’s new approach to try and treat patients more quickly and cut down on wait times, according to spokesperson Kimberly Freel. “It might have taken a couple of months before they could get an appointment with their provider,” Freel said, concerning wait times in the past. “We want the good percentage to be seen within 72 hours.” While that may not mean patients will see their primary doctor, they will see a member of the team that is directly connected with their provider. The approach cuts wait time and provides better service, according to Freel. “It’s a team based approach,” Freel said. Dr. Sara Norris, MD, Dr. Kimberley Kleckner, MD, and Ross Brown, PA-S, have

Hsieh, the facility’s new general surgeon, finished his residency at the University of Texas. Hsieh, who joined the staff in August, received his medical degree from Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland. Schmidt, who will focus on complete family medicine, was born in Ohio. She graduated from Northern Arizona University with a premed degree. in the process of converting to a new medical check-in/records system that will make the process easier and more secure. “The system we are in now is really antiquated,” hospital spokesperson Sommer Hicks said. “It’s going to make it easier for us to get the information. Moving to the next program will just make it easier for our providers.”

Coulee Medical Center has begun offering a new program “Wellness Right to Your Door.” Staff work on going to select patient’s homes to avoid the readmission process from happening. So far the program is limited to obstetrics, but the hospital expects the program to branch out, according to Hicks. Nurses provide well baby visits, help with breast feeding and other things recent mom’s might need addressed. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Coulee Medical Center is offering discounted labs in May and October. “It’s really about preventative care and we are keeping our community as healthy as possible,” Hicks said.

Retail stores, media (are) normalizing marijuana. Andi Ervin

The Chronicle REPUBLIC – After a survey showed Ferry County youth were at an increased risk for prescription drug abuse, the Republic Reducing Drug and Alcohol use coalition stepped up to the plate to help prevent and educate the community. “Ferry County’s kind of a unique county in the state,” coalition coordinator Janine Koffel said. “The average age is 47 and older. That’s part of the reason why we think prescription drug abuse” is a big concern. For the past year the group

” has been in the community educating on the concern, along with purchasing a drop box at the city police station where residents can safely dispose of expired or unwanted drugs. “Grandchildren, teens, young adult helpers have access to those medication and may sometimes take them and misuse them for themselves,” she said. “We also provide free home medicine lockboxes.” Similarly, the Okanogan

Community Coalition is working to promote the danger of drug abuse in central Okanogan County. “In 2012, 90 percent of Omak High School tenthgraders thought they would not get caught by police if they drink alcohol in the community,” spokeswoman Andi Ervin said. “We’ve worked with law enforcement really closely,” she said. “What we’ve found is

enforcement was happening, but the students didn’t think it was happening.” Ervin said two years later, the survey showed that number dropped to 60 percent. But while those number are encouraging, Irvin said she’s optimistic about the long-term conception of youth and marijuana. “Retail stores, media (are) normalizing marijuana,” she said “We don’t want to see that number increase.” The coalition consists of more than 30 community members and meets at noon on the second Thursday each month at Omak City Hall, 2 N. Ash St. The Republic Reducing Alcohol and Drug use group meets at 11 a.m. the first Tuesday of each month at the Republic First Presbyterian Church, 605 S. Keller St.
