DESIGN BRIEF 

Profound primary in London borough of Newham; Essex Primary looks to develop their standing in society by constructing a building to accommodate local pupils studying needs.

The school was established in late 1970‟s (1977). Majority of students studying at the school, live in the local area. However, they are willing to enrol children from a wider community. After having recent refurbishment within the establishment, the school now intends to extend their status after having earned the space of a local park nearby to the school which is currently unused. Intention are that a Study centre should be constructed in this area to provide accommodation for studying students. Despite the school itself being restricted to children below the age of 12, the Study centre does not have age restriction as the aim is to provide a suitable space to learn out of school hours.

Client: Essex Primary school Specification Task: Currently, the space acquired is in the form of a park, this is ideal for the development of a new upcoming urban facility. The extensive amount of grass land provides suitable platform to build on also, gives a rare opportunity to exploit the advantages provided by nature. The project is to design an urban study centre, reason being; there are a large amount of libraries found across the borough, however the issue with libraries it is very reserved, and strict with its users having to remain quiet and avoid any socialising whilst the facility is being used. The urban study centre which I am planning to design should entice the audience to attend as a group and learn and appreciate each others company whilst the all simultaneously learn and excel in the subject they study. The atmosphere should be relaxed and enjoyable for users to feel they belong there and a place for them to turn too. Purpose: Create a study centre to accommodate students in study, providing suitable space with facilities for students to advance in there studies Location: Grassland (currently known as Plashet park) Client: Essex primary – Client targets audience: Students specifically in primary, secondary or college Contemporary or Modern ? Modern Target Audience: 15-24 Secondary: All ages Location 1: Essex Primary

Distance: 0.7 miles 13 minute walk (average)

Nearby transport access -East Ham station: District line & Hammersmith & City -Buses: 104,474,101,325, 238 There are 209 primary/secondary schools all in a 3 mile radius from the park. Above I have acknowledged the closest 10 which happens to be 1 secondary school and 9 primary. Furthermore there are over 25 further education systems (colleges) within a 8 mile distance Location 2: Plashet park

(Primary Source Study) Hornchurch Library As part of my research I chose to visit, a couple of Libraries as I thought they are similar to study centers functioning with similar purposes. This Library is situated in Horn church, attached to its local fire brigade station. The facility provides space to accommodate approximately 70 people on the ground floor which permits public access and averages just about 1000 users a day according to staff. It offers limited computer access with an approximate 20 computers available. Furthermore the Library offers 16 car parking spaces with 4 cycle posts and Wheelchair and pushchair access. The Second floor which requires authorized access consists of 2 Classrooms (accommodating a class of 30 people maximum) & 1 Meeting Room for hire , which seats on average 15 people. I was able to acknowledge that the library did not provide sufficient seating space, the space for seating was minimal providing about 1520 seats. Most space was utilized with shelves for books, despite this being the= most critical element of the library, I believe it is crucial to provide a more reasonable amount of seating based on the approximate users of the library. If the library averages 70 people (using the complete space) there should be at least 50 seats in my perspective. I found the building was completed with what appears to be units, or individual blocks of buildings, which combines to from the entire Library. To the eye, the building is in now way astounding architectural wise, this does not mean the design of the building is a failure; in my opinion of the building is entirely focused on its function, which is a Library. Despite it being what is perhaps a more modern Library than many, it is not inspiring in terms of design for my own project.

Exploring the space Here I have recorded my visual understanding of the Library, I believe in doing so I was able to gain a better idea in what may work and may not, and this will be beneficial for my design.

The layout of a building is integral, in meeting the needs of the audience and success of the building, I found the arrangement of furniture and paths for users of the facility concerning. Reception should be more easier or more immediately accessible. Secondly the seating arrangements of the facility were also misplaced in my opinion, I believe the seating arrangements should also be more immediately accessible allowing users to sit or wait while seeking assistance or completing other activates.

Primary Visual Inspiration I would like to create a unique design for my project, which is why I have chosen to look at an unusual source for visual inspiration. Through my research of I have discovered; elements in daily life can spur ideas. For example architect Barry Berkus believes in the form of organic architecture, in which ideas are gained from natural elements in everyday life. Therefore I have taken a sandwich as a form of inspiration. A brief analysis of the sandwich shows its triangular shape, and layers. Qualities which could be applied to a building. I have created a simple model using sketch which transitions the visual source into a more structural form of a building. In my perspective I believe the design is too sharp, the scaled height looks suitable to a two story building. Sketching an initial ideal would be better for a visual understanding. Here I have sketched how I think the facility should look, I have taken out most sharp points, as I felt that they were quite obstructive of the interior space. I intend for this facility to be made into a two floor building with secure access to the rooftop, where subtle activity can take place, I am considering to place a garden on the roof consisting of artificial grassland. I have tried to apply a contemporary form, as I would like the space to easily embed itself into it its urban environment. Attracting the youthful students in its society. The height of my building shall be considerably large on both floors, this is to broaden the space which surrounds users, if the height on each floor is short than users may feel supressed and restricted. Large surrounding space will implant freedom into the minds of the users.

Floor plan changes

Model and Ideas for function Along with the images of the physical model, I have designed three elevations which illustrate how I think each floor will fulfil the function(s). The ground floor can be exclusively used for public users, provided with reception area and seating as well as a computing facility. The first floor could be used privately or offer more space for users, who can continue study on the first floor similar to how the Hornchurch library which I looked at earlier, had used the first floor. The second floor obviously will be used as a roof terrace, where users could study or just enjoy an artificial environmental experience.

Developed CAD Model

Following the ideas from my sketches and practical models, I have developed the design which has spurred from experimentation in developing forms of architecture in “day to day objects; this development has come from a sandwich and I feel the outcome is quite strong, it has a contemporary look, as well as this I feel it is a much more pleasing outcome in terms of design in comparison to the Hornchurch Library. The design, would most likely not have been thought of had I not turned my attention to the object (sandwich) for inspiration. I feel that the target audience would respond well to this structure, the idea design, with the combination of black and white colours reflecting a bold and confident look and the calmness of the blue tinted windows.

Artist Research Frank Gehry He is globally recognised for his numerous world renowned tourist attractions. Gehryâ€&#x;s works is often considered as the most important works of contemporary architecture. His most famous work, the Guggenheim Bilbao is a museum of avant-garde, sculptural art in architecture, it was established in 1997, October. The design of the building exemplifies the philosophy of Frank Gehry. It includes his authentic and unique style of curved and irregular shapes, the design is inspired by the shapes and textures of a fish. A series of shapes are interconnected to form this building, the shapes are made of various material such as; orthogonal coated stone and titanium core covered by an organic skin, which makes viewers perceive its fish like texture and understandably the curves enhance this perception. Glass skin is used to connect these volumes giving a transparent connection for viewing. The height of the building has been intentionally minimised to avoid making the museum suppress the rest of the cityâ€&#x;s infrastructure, however to improvise the museum does cover more surface area on the ground providing the space required for the museum. There are two perspectives of this building: when seen from a landscape view it appears to resemble a boat on the other hand if it is seen from above it appears to look like a flower. This is because of the curves which Gehry uses, it can appear to have many perspectives depending on ones viewing.

Drawn analysis

Design inspired by – Frank Gehry This is a model which I created using card a folding techniques inspired by Frank Gehry following a video documenting his methods. I tried to emulate his technique to create a rather sculptural form. In my first attempt I feel the model is has not fulfilled the expectation of the outcome I had in mind. I was being quite spontaneous in my first attempt and did not fully consider the way the space could function. Despite being a visually interesting piece I can not see any to use this space for the needs of my client. I will create a second model and attempt to create an outcome which is more capable of fulfilling my clients needs.

Evaluation: In my own opinion I believe that the design which I have made does not show the level of skill belonging to Gehry (understandably). However after practising this technique I have found that perhaps I have taken the wrong approach in the production of this model focuses on the façade, but has said that this can result in feeling a model is „pretentious‟ and this is the same way I would describe my feelings on this model. I would like to experiment again using these newly found techniques

Second model – Initial idea This is the initial idea of second model, which I look to develop continuing in this current style. I feel this time the design is more fluid and the used of contrasting colours black and white has helped to define the form of the structure.

Second model – Development

Developing the idea

Interior drawing

Exterior drawing

This model, shows an idea of how I would like the design of my building, however I have found a lot of complacency in designing a complete and function able design, because of its complexity. Due to this I had drawn what I visualised of the interior and the exterior. Yet I was still unable to see how to complete the design and therefore I began looking at the floor plans of Frank Gehryâ€&#x;s Buildings.

Upon viewing the model, I was able to realise the complexity of the interior space, I feel that this is to accommodate the function of the building which Gehry has, designed, considering my building, I do not feel that it will need to accommodate as many uses as those seen in the plans above. I would like to use some of the ideas which I have learnt here in my final design, but unfortunately I do not feel I can not progress with these ideas further.

Zaha Hadid, Aquatic Centre (Primary Source Study)

Following my initial experiments, I chose to look at the work of Zaha Hadidâ€&#x;s Aquatic Centre, which I had visited earlier in the year in order to understand how I can enhance my design. I felt that my current ideas did not have the characteristics which I was looking for and thus chose to look at the aquatic centre for inspiration whose work has a similar unique qualities of avant-garde architecture to Frank Gehryâ€&#x;s. The structure consist of irregular curves and complicated Three-Dimensional shapes which is extremely interesting to me as I feel that the outcome is not only a building facility but a form of art. Visiting the site, I found the structure is built adjusted to its location and environment. Show in the image above part of the structure has been made on a hill, this almost fuses the design with the environment making it seem as if it is apart of nature, reflective of its organic form.

The aquatic centre is situated in between the Olympic park and Stratford city, making it a connection from and to either side. On ground height, there is entry to the facility, however this is no to the swimming complex, the ground level is partially completed with seating for spectators and an encircling walking area allowing, passers to view the swimming complex. The translucent glass paved with varying blue allows people on the exterior of the facility to also look in, however this is only from close distance providing privacy for users within. The inspiration of the design is said to be waves, explaining its free flowing volume. The double curvature geometry constitutes a figurative structure, this fits in harmoniously with the nearby water stream.

The design of the aquatic centre, has paid great attention to minor details. In the interior of the facility we can find a series of pods on the ceilings, within this facility, it is used to create a pattern which adds liveliness to the structure, also sticking to the water like theme; it resembles the form of droplets of water. The Aquatic centre has several swimming pools, and the largest which was used for the Olympics, features translucent panels, running across, providing a cinematic view to others in the facility and outside the main pool.

Visual response to Aquatic Centre

Here I have used my primary images of the aquatic centre to create a brief response to the work of Zaha Hadidâ€&#x;s work I have created this as a representation of the initial idea I have, and will go on to create a practical model.

Idea Development Following on from my initial visual response, I used Styrofoam to create a practical model. I had used this material, as I was able to manipulates its form into the woven faรงade which I was looking for. The design features a dome shape at the roof, and this will be a significant design feature, it will allow light illuminate the building and users within as well as providing a pleasant visual quality. The design has for points in four different directions, which appear to be similar to a space craft. The users can access the building through these points allowing an easy access rom different areas of its location.

Design in response to Zaha Hadid’s work On the left is a ArchiCAD floor plan portraying my ideas of how the structure will function and execute its purpose, the structure will be composed of four different areas, one cafeteria, one lecture room, one computer room, and one open area which includes w/c. each four areas should include entrance doors for users from exterior and a further interior door providing access to left and right areas.

1 Model Labelled 1, provides a perspective of how a dining facility can be made out of this space, large amount of spacious seating can be provided when users decide to take a break, this is not an immediate requirement however it will increase the functional ability and attraction to the users.

This is the view I previously spoke of, I would like users to be able to have a display of the sky as well as gaining apart of the atmosphere outdoors.

2 Model labelled 2 below illustrates how the structure can be used, this is one of four areas. This area I believe should act as a lecture room, where large members can participate in group activity or learning. With seating and projector screen, subtle lessons, and educational courses can take place in a casual yet attentive manner.

Sense engagement of building (primary textures)

Considering how the users can engage with the facility I have looked at a possible design for the four points of the building which are the access points, perhaps here there could be an interesting texture to intrigue the user on their way in to the building. Iâ€&#x;ve had to create a look which would appeal to the target audience. I have developed the outer areas of the shape to have inner flakey curves similar to that of a cobra snake. I believe this simple carved outskirt will add to the aesthetics of the building. Referring back to the work of Gehry specifically on the design of the Guggenheim Bilbao I was able to note how the texture of the building was similar to the skin of a fish.

The texture should only have a physical solid feel, not any realistic rubber or slime. The reason I have chosen this bizarre feel is because I would like users to be able to engage with the structure, and this theme which can be related to snakes quite easily, will intensify the atmosphere. I have continuously mentioned atmosphere, as I believe it is a key part in making the design successful, as I understand it will have an influential effect on the users of the facility.

Frank Lloyd Wright Wright was an American architect, interior designer, writer, and educator. He designed over 1,000 structures and successfully completed just over 500. Wright simply intended on designing structures that were harmonious with humanity and harmonious with its environment. He labelled his philosophy as organic architecture. This philosophy is echoed through his Falling-water structure which was established in 1935, this creation was well embraced through how well the design integrates itself within nature. Despite being manufactured when viewing the structure it is almost like it has grown out the earthâ€&#x;s natural soil, rather than being man made. When creating my design I must also think about its surroundings as something's suit certain areas more than others, and if the area and design do not work well together this could make the structure be seen in a negative way. A combination of four materials were used to make the structure; steel, glass, reinforced concrete and sandstone. The choice of reinforced concrete and sandstone allow the structure to embed itself within the rocks without looking intrusive to the landscape. Wright's admiration for Japanese architecture was important in his inspiration for this house, along with most of his work and his philosophy is similar to that of Jaapanese Architecture. The power of the falls is always felt, not visually but through sound, as the breaking water could constantly be heard throughout the entire house, this shows that despite the developments of the structure, it has not harmed the natural qualities of its location. The design is extraordinary for a house and redefines the relationship between man, architecture, and nature.

Falling-water House

Response – Formation of building Following my research of architect Frank Lloyd Right, I had decided to consider the formation of the building and how I could portray his ideas in my own design. I have created this model which is quite simple, and is to show my initial ideas on the formation of a potential design rather than its exterior look. I was particularly pleased wit the movement/positing the different parts to his structure which area all completed to adjust to its environment.

Using small wooden blocks, I have created a layered structure with the layers facing different positions. This could be the figure of the building, and perhaps the styles which I have learnt form Gehrry and Hadid could be implemented on the exterior.

The images above are a model which I developed following my research on Frank Lloyd Wright

Elevation, showing figure

Developing ideas – for figure of bulding After making the model, I chose to re-interpret the model by sketching it in different ways which I visualise the model. This would allow me to visualise different figures for my design.

1

2

The first drawing illustrates an interpretation, drawn from the Initial build up of the wood pieces, the area which is shaded, is the „blockâ€&#x; can be missing, forming a figure which seperates the blocks on the groudnd perhaps. The second and third sketches are both the same, which have been presented in two perspectives, the reason for this is when changed the sketches present very different conceptions. I like the movement of the blocks in this ideas, this movement could be induced into the exterior form perhaps.

3

4

The fourth idea, has an out of place look to it, the dark line is a key part of the figure, this could be a design aesthetic perhaps.

Developed CAD Model Continuing my development of the figure of my design, I have taken one of the previous sketches and created a CAD model. The model illustrates one of the ideas for the figure. After viewing this particular concept, I was not pleased with the idea, and felt that it was not a good choice to create separation in the building, the building should be one united structure as this would effect the atmosphere for the users. I would like the users to be able to socialise and connect within the space and separation between the building would hamper this. This would create similar problems , which I noticed in the Hornchurch Library. The use of translucent material, could feature predominantly on my final design, as I feel this could allow the users to feel closer to the outside environment and is considerate of the philosophy which I learnt from Frank Gehry. Viewing the environment on the outside could have a positive influence on the users in the interior.

Vanke Tripple V Gallery Modern Architecture For the final part of my research, I take a look at the Vanke Tripple V Gallery - shown on the left, with its sharp edges and peculiar shape, exemplifies a unique piece of art in its distinct contemporary form. In my project I have followed the styles of modern architecture and have chosen to look at this example for my final inspiration. The Gallery was designed as a permanent show gallery and tourist information centre for China‟s largest developer Vanke, the dramatic design for the TRIPLE V GALLERY has become an icon along the Dong Jiang Bay coastline. Despite its obvious sculptural qualities, the building evolved quite rationally from a careful analysis of key contextual & programmatic perimeters – resulting in the TRIPLE V GALLERY‟S triangulated floor plan as well as the 3 soaring edges that have come to define its form. I particularly like the sharpness the structure has, as well as the illuminating lights on the edges. The wood textures, materials also apply a great appearance to the structure which contrasts the translucent materials – glazing. In terms of its function, the structure accommodates three different spaces/uses; lounge area, show gallery, information centre. It works quite well providing enough space for users and staff to complete the activities they are required to, with most areas being open plan, ensuring spaces have no barriers or blocks.. The interior design, is consistent from its exterior. An extension of the show gallery, is the lounge area is where discussions are conducted. This space takes advantage of the panoramic views of the coastline and comprises a sculptural bar counter.

•

drawings

Following my research in to the Vanke Triple V Gallery, I created several drawings of the structure in order to gain a better understating of the form, and how it works. I was particularly interested in its sculptural qualities and therefore I have mostly focused on its perspectives and dynamics.

Geometric shapes study – Vanke Triple V Gallery Response

In response to the Vanke Triple V gallery, I have carried out an experiment with card where I have created geometric forms. This was in consideration of the exterior look of my buildings as well as its figure. I particularly like the style of geometric shapes, and used this as a catalyst for these models. Combining different folds and pieces I was able to compose this small models. Analysing the Vanke Triple V Gallery, I was able to understand its sculptural form, which is quite triangular, and pointed outright. The models have similar qualities, but the scale is rather small in comparison, perhaps there should be more space between the constructions of the models, it seems to be quite tight and compact.

Continued experimentation

I have recreated a forms of geometric shapes, this time I have considered how it would feel for the users within. Creating a model, which is less clustered than the ones in the previous experiment, I am now able to see how the users will view the space. The geometric style, could be key in engaging and interacting with the users and I feel that this style is strong enough to be included in my final outcome.

Initial Design Model

This is an outcome I have created following my work on geometric shapes. The design will have the facility spread across three floors, providing a large workspace for students. I have taken the initial design from the sketch, and developed it bearing in mind the geometric theme, this has made me to create three floors consisting of similar lengths/dimensions, which have then been completed with a series of geometric shapes, in the form of triangles. The outcome, in my own perspective looks a renaissance from being a simple pile of Jenga blocks, to a towering and emphatic structure, which presents itself as a structure which will intrigue architecture enthusiast. I am adherent in including translucent material, and I believe it will be valued in this structure increasing a daring, and work stimulating atmosphere.

Experiment with interior look Following the model prior to this, I have created a second model where I look at the interior feel of the design again. The design of the model portrays a very geometric style, with the straws representing the spine of the structure which will hold or connect with similar material to incorporate a structure in which users can be active. I do like this, idea and this second model pushes me to further consider this as part of my final design. I feel that the movement of the structure, creates a better atmosphere and induces sculptural qualities similar to that of Zaha Hadid and Frank Gehry .

This illustration, shows how I would like to use translucent material. A representation of the model prior to this.

Project Analysis – Final Model Ideas During the course of this project I have acquired distinctive information. I have researched the work of several architects and establishments which have given me an understanding of the way architecture is design, and what it takes for architectural designs to be successful. Through this process I have also been able to test my creative and practical skills when it has come to drawing or making. Some task admittedly were harder than the other however I felt, my failures have encouraged me to take advantage of skills which I do possess and it has boosted me to try alternative methods. Using what I have found through my research an development, I would now like to materialise all that I have come to find In this project. Architects Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid have had a greater impact on the design aspects of my final idea, particularly the sculptural qualities, on the other hand Frank Lloyd Wright has inspired me on the figure of my final design. The Vanke Triple V gallery stimulated my final experimentation and study of Geometric shapes which I would like to utilise as the main design feature of my design. My idea of a garden on the rooftop, should be included in the final design, as I think this is elegant touch, the structure will be situated in a park however should it include its own artificial touch, the design can easily embed itself into its environment. Rather than just being an entire element of urban culture, the green space can implement its own move to affiliate with its surrounding space.

With the outcome of the model which I created in the theme of geometric shapes, I felt that the design was very interesting and ambiguous with its dynamic shapes running across the structure, I strongly felt this is something which the users of the facility will enjoy and appreciate.

I would like the facility to have two three floors, with two internal, whilst the third will be in the from of the rooftop garden. I believe building a structure over a number of floors helps preserve the space in the environment, I also like the element of height in structures rather than staying on a ground floor basis

Here I have created elevations, and plan views, of the final design Idea which I have for my final model. I would like to create the model through CAD – Sketch up and will refer to these elevation during the design process

Final Model

Evaluation Considering the purpose of this project „‟Create a study centre to accommodate students in study, providing suitable space with facilities for students to advance in there studies‟‟ I believe I have fulfilled the requirements. The mentality held in this project was to create something, which supressed current establishments in the local area, redefined its use in a modernised presentation. Having acknowledged the number of libraries and similar facilities not yet taking advantage of the capabilities available in the architectural development industry, I believe it was the best choice to take the route to creating modern architecture. The primary target audience being considered as 15-24 years old, were identified to be in a likely mutual situation of having to prepare for exams, unlike libraries where rules are held; demanding silence, this study centre promotes group learning an discussions as I believe it Is easier to learn with people than on you r own. However users will not be forced to study together as there is enough space for individual studies. Referring back to the design, the audience were also considered for this and it was decided that as the age group are used to the urban culture In modern society they would probably prefer an establishment which suits that criteria/category. Reflecting on the design project, I would like to express how much of a challenge I felt this was. In my earlier studies, despite participating in similar courses, I had not yet experienced something as demanding as this, I also felt this was perhaps a small taste of what to expect in the world of design or more specifically Architecture. Nonetheless this was an experience I enjoyed, as I was able to practice new methods and techniques. Furthermore, I was able to research profound architects, and consume intriguing knowledge which had made me change my perception or oblige me to think differently. The making process of the course was most enjoyable, as it became almost became an unusual hobby, having not done practical activates like this before. Nevertheless it has to be said the design process was most difficult. As I had to take several things in consideration, and suit it to the specification. Furthermore, the development of ideas was problematic for me as I must admit, I jump into ideas, and am not able to see how or specifically what I need to change at times in my ideas. Solutions were found when discussing the ideas with peers or tutors, as this gave second opinion and a different perception to my own, also researching and analysing the work of established architects; Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry, Lloyd Wright and their designs helped gain an understanding on what is necessary in creating successful designs in particular the Vanke Triple V gallery was influential to my final outcome. My research in the local library also delivered vital information, giving me a visually detailed preview of what my establishment should consist of and avoid. The final design, has taken a simple shape and formed it into a spontaneous modern form architecture. The design offers immense space, to allow movement and create spacious yet cosy atmosphere. I personally, like the rooftop garden feature as this allows users to take their study outdoors, to an unusual open space height, and this will play the users emotions as people experience different feelings towards heights, this is not a bad thing as sometimes the element of fear , excels us (safety is provided by the permanent barrier. Having taken the opinions of peers an my self I am contented with my design, and believe it has fulfilled requirements and will be successful.
