BARCELONA HOTEL Port Olympic Barcelona, Spain Partner: Zaira Pourier

The location of the site is along the Port Olympic of Barcelona. The constructed beach, public spaces, and busy entertaining streets are constantly occupied with both locals and tourist. The studies analyze conditions that are most relevant to the program. Both locals and tourist share similar interest in daily activities. The program rethinks the organization of activities, within the tower taking functions relative within Barcelona. The merging of the sectional sociological ideas allow for the two fig ures to socialize and interact. The diversity in activities attract a large percentage of people.

The horizontal backbone of the tower contains public spaces and social activities which become gathering spaces for both locals and tourist. The structural sys tem which anchors the tower with the site supports a overhead condition for the social spaces that remain on ground level. It serves as a threshold to the beach and the active city of the port Olympic area of Barcelona.

Launch and Pool: The fritted glass serves for filtering of natural light in the space and creates privacy conditions. However the fritted print animates the recreational space. an embedded space truss becomes the structural member for the floating pools, this pushes out to the exterior for a over view to the city of Barcelona

The entry: filters the public in by a ramp that flows through the tower as the primary circulation to the social gathering spaces. a secondary passage to the public plaza can also be accessible.

URBAN PLASTICITY Rome, Italy Parnter: Zaira Pourier

Pushing, pulling, lifting, segmenting, shifting became the molding of the urban "plasticity" project. It is situated in Rome’s rich city of culture and historical context. The context itself is full of pedestrians actively moving through dense streets and public spaces. The project then begins to understand the merging conditions found on the dense streets of Rome, and the piazza del Campidoglio. These two distinct conditions were reinterpreted into a full scale urban project that would merge public and private spaces to create a multi-functional environment that gathers its inhabitants and visitors. To understand the urban fabric of Rome, we had to first understand the urban configurations that make a city. Analytical studies were generated to compare public space, density and waterfront conditions of the urban models. Diagramming pedestrian movement:

At the corner of Via dei Pettinari and Lungotevere dei Vallati, the site is bypassed onto ponte sisto, that navigates you over the Tiber river in Rome. The busy streets that consist of traffic, density and the narrowness of the pedestrian path obscures both visitors and inhabitants. Therefore, the entrance of the intervention becomes a vacuum which pulls the public into the open plaza of social activities. Now the corner is no longer a bypass but becomes a gathering space.

Entrance: The elevated ground condition becomes the area of social activities

The intervention stacks and shifts the public and private spaces to create a harmonious dialogue among buildings. The public insertion grabs onto the buildings making it the main circulation space for visitors and inhabitants. It penetrates and segments Filtering skin and systematic primary system collaborated onto the construct. The public perceives the openness and lightness, in both the interior and the exterior. Allowing the skin to acts as a filter, shading and ventilation system.

Modular Variation: Light+Space The construction of the modular variation project becomes about the concept of making. Taking individual pieces and integrating them in a holistic manner. The construction further investigates the ideas of light, shade, and the use of garden space to attract the presence of the human.

16

The modular variation system further explores the rethinking of a garden pot. It gives the garden pot not only the existence on the ground but explores the idea of an elevated system that becomes a shading system. As the sun penetrates through, it creates filters of light which allow for a different experience from its surrounding. The single members are held up by the structural ribs and rods that act as a primary and secondary system. As the climate changes the member adapts to the conditions, be it rain or sun.

Exhibiting Sarasota: Grounded Lightly sarasota, FL

Given a site along US 41, which was once a gateway to the city of Sarasota, an interpretive center becomes the necessary element for a civic vision. The project investigates the architectural insertion which can becomes a contribution to its urban surroundings. Considering the sites dynamic edges of such as a main street, park and residential living, the housing of the interpretive center and its future buildings become a centralized configuration one that reaches out to the park and US 41, maintaining its distance from private living. Upon arrival, the sites manipulated context guides the visitor through its plaza gradually guiding them towards their destination. The interpretive center’s gestural canopy reaches out to the visitors pulling them into a delicate glass box entry housed under the open canopy. The intention of the canopy not only became a filtering of light but became the jointing element of the programmed spaces below. The circulation through the spaces becomes the main idea for the programmed spaces creating a walking gallery which progressively guides the visitor throughout.

Cultural Thread: Connecting metro + waterfront JARDIM HELENA, Sao PAULO, BRazil

The Hidroanel water ring becomes the beginning analysis for the development of Sao Paulo waterfront. Further understanding of the Hidroanal water ring lead to understanding the emphasize of solid waste collection along the waterway. Solid waste is a major problem because of the numerous informal settlements that have occurred throughout the years. Aside from informal settlements, there is a traffic issue that bring people to a halt. As the hidroanel water ring excels in the distribution method it lacks the cultural potentials of the water edges. Thus the project seeks to densify Jardim Helena by taking existing conditions of live /work and amplifying them. Understanding Sao Paulo in relation to Jardim Helena (Eastern Area)

M 00.04.82: GEOLOGICAL AUDIT Single Occupant Dwelling: Cartographer Partners: Zaira Pourier, Matt Tapeley

Narrative before spectacle. tectonic precedes aesthetic. function mediates form. this single occupant dwelling was approached first and foremost without noise: necessary gesture, form or material that hinders the comprehension of the narrative, the whole and its components. the cartographer scrutinizes the landscape, observing its beauty. Each year he returns, assembling a collection of maps that chart the growth of site 00.04.82, a plot of land set up for ecological preserve and study. a watchtower on site 00.04.82 brought him to new heights, allowing a 360 field of vision to record the landscape. Over a period of time the tower fell into disrepair and eventually decayed, erasing his ability to document. His means to continue map

what began as a mapping exercise, soon became a reason to spend subsequent years returning to site 00.04.82 to document its phenomenological aspects. Upon his return, the cartographer decided to stay and take refuge amongst the artifacts dispersed across the terrain.

interior partitions, distressed and translucent, maintain the passive qualities the floor plan gives to the space. Light permeates a thin filmlike membrane delivering ambient conditions suitable for most low light activities. Daytime activities are supported by the membrane’s ability to open, admitting light in unfiltered quantities. the active membrane transforms routine and occupation to vitality and necessity. the watchtower emerges from behind the membrane, returning relevance to the displaced artifact and validating the verticality of the space. the cartographer awakens in the morning, his bedroom filled with the light of the new day He reaches for a book, he takes a deep breath, and heads for the watchtower. A sketchbook in hand, the climb up the stairs is a short one. Touching pen to paper, he scans the horizon, hopeful that today will bring many new discoveries for site 00.04.82 or as he has come to call it, home

Visual Linkage Sarasota, FL Nathan Benderson Aquatic Nature Center

Due to the development of a Aquatic Nature Center in Sarasota, FL, structures such as the start, aligners, timing and finishing structures proceeded as an investigation of required program and adaptive design, were program mediates each structural form. The need to adapt new program to the structures began with the understanding of the aquatic nature center as a recreational hub, where a diversity of occupants my interact within the center. The understanding that all events of the site pertained to the land and water the necessity to ascend would resonate. It became apparent that the FISA corporation had required programmatic needs in which new program could and would emerge. Visibility became a common needed element, giving the idea of transparent and translucent spaces an echo among all structures. The “visual linkage among the structural towers introduces ascending spaces to make occupants not only appreciate the site on land and water but from above. As these structures become individual components among a family, they all adapt new program to facilitate the overall essence of the area.

BEACH HOUSE SIESTA KEY, FL

Situated along the gulf coast of Mexico, this moderate 2,500 sq ft beach house becomes a speculative design who's purpose is to optimizes regionalist architectural qualities. The requirements were to create a home for a family of four, that would maintain extensive views to the gulf coast. The design responds to the site context and climate conditions along with working with the coastal construction coast line. The response to the site conditions explores the idea of elevated living space where all formal living happens on the main level, while the master and study area occupy the upper level. The house further explores the ideas of conditioned and open spaces placing terrace areas along the ocean side were the family can enjoy the cool ocean breezes.

Structural expansion Furniture design seminar The process of assembling the final chair was as simple as connecting and locking into the joints created. The possibly to product a number of these chair is plausible because the material was used in an efficient manner. While creating the design of the chair the CNC Mill bit size was one constraint I encountered. This constraint lead to establishing a limitation to the size of the striation of the chair. The bit size used was 1/4. Another process prior to stretching the ply wood was the soaking of the back. Without the soaking the striation of the chair will not give enough to make a noticeable impression of stretching. The back become the piece that would bring together the ideas of stressing the limits of the material.
