President’s Message—Joanne Moul Dear Friends, Thanksgiving, a time to focus on family, friends, blessings and sorrows, is my favorite holiday. What I love best about Thanksgiving is preparing the meal. It is a time to feel the closeness of those who came before me in my family, those who shared the same rituals as I now perform, to prepare the dishes our family has grown to expect and love. As I grate, chop, sauté and bake, my mind is filled with memories of my mom, aunts and grandmother. I picture them in the kitchen, rolling out the dough for the ravioli or preparing the bird for stuffing, and it is as though they are there, right by my side, guiding by hands. Then I think about the family that will eat the food I am preparing. They don’t know what Nana’s dinner tasted
like, in truth, barely remember my mom’s delicious food, but I do. I am the connection between generations. Through me our family traditions are passed on. I will sit at our Thanksgiving table missing those who are no longer with us, as I know now, my parents and grandparents must have done. And, just as they did, I will celebrate the family that is gathered around me at this year’s Thanksgiving table, and give thanks. Being a part of Catala, one feels a similar sense of tradition. We remember the women who began Catala 81 years ago, to care for the students and support the university. While we did not know Father Lyon or Mrs. Sullivan, we still serve as the connection between their vision for Santa Clara, and today’s
students. The many women who have been Catala members throughout the decades have guided us. They have passed on Catala’s traditions. This Thanksgiving, we give thanks for those members who laid the strong foundation for our Catala Club, as well as the women who are maintaining those traditions today. I am grateful for Catala being in my life. It has brought me new friendships and helped me rediscover former ones. Dear friends, I wish you a Thanksgiving filled with warm memories, surrounded by those you love. Warmly,

This can be a cause of sadness but it doesn't have to be. The reality of an afterlife is often stated in the preaching and remarks of Jesus. Following his resurrection, this becomes a promise and a reality for all. These facts are well known to all who believe. So the separation from loved ones is not final
or a tragedy, but rather a step forward, until we are all reunited in the presence of the Lord. He has promised to take us with him that we might all be happily gathered with him for all eternity. William F. Donnelly, S.J. Chaplain

DECEMBER LUNCH SPRING FUNDRAISER
Chaplain’s Message—William F. Donnelly, S.J. Each November the Church calls on us to remember and pray for the dead. All Souls Day is specifically set aside for that purpose. Inevitably that leads us to thinking about all those who have gone before us: the Catala members who passed away this past year, our parents and family members, and all those friends whom we have known over so many years.

Thank you to Kim Crary and Vicki Pope for organizing our “Back to SCU” October luncheon and meeting. We had a spirited group who enthusiastically showed their Bronco Pride by wearing SCU logo wear or red and white. Bucky the Bronco, SCU’s very own mascot, made a guest appearance and enjoyed photo ops with many of our members. Our guest speaker, Athletic and Recreation Director, Dan Coonan, talked about how successful SCU’s athletes are in the classroom and in their competitions. Catala Reading Corner

Thank you to everyone that helped make the 2010 Fashion Plates such a success. If you helped behind the scenes, modeled, chaired a committee or attended the event, you were essential to its success. The "unaudited" profit from this year's Fashion Plates is approximately $16,000. We are thrilled and could not have done it without you. Georgia and Nancy
