Electricity

All of Albania’s electricity is produced by one state-owned electric power company; The Albanian Power Corporation (KESH) (www.kesh.com.al). The distribution division of this company is currently available for privatization. In 2005 the total supply of electric power increased by 5.4 percent compared with 2004. The quantity of supplies attained 6,705 GWh. The domestic electric power production in 2005 was 81.3 percent of the total supply. A new Thermal Power Plant in Vlora is expected to join the current electric power system in 2007. Once it begins operations, total domestic power production will increase by 20%. Investments in hydropower are strongly encouraged in order to increase electric power production 40-50% by 2010.

Water The potable water service is in the process of becoming a responsibility of the local government. The table below shows the price of water and sewerage for private companies in some of Albania’s larger cities. Price of water and sewerage for private entities

Telecommunications Telecommunications in Albania includes fixed and mobile telephone services. The main operator of fixed telephone service is the state owned Albtelecom Sh.A. To date it has installed 305,000 fixed telephone lines, 258,000 of which are functioning (Source: Albtelecom Sh.A, 2006). Albtelecom applies the following tariffs on businesses: Tariff / impulse 1.5 ALL

Mobile telecommunications is used in greater density in Albania than in other countries in the region. The current network is effective and covers most of the country. The major operators of this service are: - Albanian Mobile Communications (AMC) that has 650,000 mobile numbers, covers 87% of the country and can accommodate 92% of the population (www.amc.al). - Vodafone Albania has 550,000 mobile numbers, covers 85% of the country, and can accommodate 90% of the population (www.vodafone.al). Albtelecom plans to invest about 20 million Euros for the creation of a third licensed mobile company “Eagle Mobile�, which will install about 50,000 numbers in its first year and cover about 10% of the market over three consecutive years. Internet Service The estimated number of internet users is 75,000 and this number is continuously increasing. There are currently 26 internet service providers operating in Albania; 11 national companies, 9 regional, and 6 local.
