Gleeful

Supports the arts. Some dorky high school kid will thank you.

When I tell straight women that I write for OMG! Magazine, I always get a positive response. Something along the lines of, “Aw, I love gay boys! They’re so cute.” Or, “Will you find me a gay best friend? I need help shopping.” When I tell other formerhigh-school-geek women that I write for OMG! Magazine, they already have gay best friends. Why? Because like me, those women spent most of high school hiding backstage during high school musicals. High school art, theater, band and chorus clubs give losers and outcasts a safe haven. Forget the library. The green room is where it’s at. Just look at the Burger King Kid’s Club level of diversity on the popular new series Glee. It seems like a cliché, but those of us who were outsiders in high school simply nod along with every heartbreak and laugh.

OMG!

To be honest, I wasn’t too sure about Glee when I watched the first episode, but it’s slowly grown on me. The friendship between the girls in the glee club and the club’s “token” gay boy ring particularly true. In high school, I befriended the only two gay boys at school, spending hours backstage singing songs from Rent and Les Miserables. Yeah, we were huge dorks. I love that the arts — music, fashion and theater — bring like-minded individuals together regardless of upbringing, creed or sexuality. Have you ever watched Project Runway? The mishmash of contestants share a common love for fashion (and drama). Beyond that, they come from all walks of life. It’s like a crew of fashion-pirates led by an austere, wise captain (have I mentioned my crush on Tim Gunn? And does that make Heidi Klum the bad guy? I hope so).

Whether you’re involved in the arts or not, make a point of supporting the local arts community. Attend a gallery opening. Take in an opera. Hit an avant-garde fashion show. Buy tickets to a museum event. Support arts programs and camps for kids who need a safe refuge. Kids need healthy forms of expression and creativity. Kids need to laugh and sing and paint and dance so they can grow up to be strange, somewhat confident adults — like us. Plus, think about how terrible reality shows will be in 20 years if we don’t support the arts for kids right now.

Book Fair Stuck in the Past Anyone remember the Scholastic Book Fair that would come to the elementary schools? It's quite a useful way to get kids interested in reading. Unless it's about things that are gay. Then the kids can read "Little Women" or something. Scholastic has banned the book "Luv Ya Bunches" by Lauren Myracle from the nationwide Book Fair lineup. The book is about four girls who form a bond despite not having anything in common. So what's so shocking about this book? Among other things, one of the girls has gay parents. And Scholastic is NOT having that. Myracle was asked to "clean up" the book, removing mild profanity such as "that sucks" as well as the gay parents. She agreed to clean up the language but won't remove the gay parents. "A child having same-sex parents is not offensive, in my mind, and shouldn’t be ‘cleaned up.’ … I find that appalling," Myracle said. I don't know about you, but I'm sure not loving Scholastic bunches.

the state, which is expressly BANNED! I just have to chuckle. When will the people realize that gays just want to get married and eventually divorced like everyone else?

Gays in the Military Mafia Don't say you like the cannoli, capiche?

Don’t Mess With Texas Everything's bigger in Texas. Even the gay divorces. Wait, what? Yes, Texas, a state that specifically forbids gay marriage, will be allowing their first gay divorce. Dallas County Judge Tena Callahan ruled in a statement this month that she "has jurisdiction to hear a suit for divorce filed by persons legally married in another jurisdiction and who meet the residency and other prerequisites required to file for divorce in Dallas County, Texas." Predictably, the state attorney general is all over the case and wants it thrown out of court, citing that acknowledging gay divorce will open a loophole that may recognize gay marriage in

There's an unwritten rule in the Mafia, and it basically consists of "don't be gay." If you are and you let it be known, don't be surprised if you're the next one getting the hit. Robert Mormando, convicted of killing a bagel storeowner six years ago, is now afraid this will happen to him. Because not only did he admit in court that he was an informant, but he doubly risked his life being involved with the Mob and being gay. The court system tried their hardest to give Mormando privacy, not listing his name on the docket or in their computer database, but those pesky squealers at The New York Times found out and published the story. You'd think even the Mob would get with the times now; as long as "business is good," who cares what you do?
